“No matter how close we are to another person, few human relationships are as free from strife, disagreement, and frustration as is the relationship you have with a good dog. Few human beings give of themselves to an-other as a dog gives of itself. I also suspect that we cherish dogs because their unblem-ished souls make us wish – consciously and unconsciously – that we were as innocent as they are, and make us yearn for a place where innocence is universal and where the mean-ness, the betrayals, and the cruelties of this world are unknown.” ~ Dean Koontz, A Big Little Life: A Memoir of a Joyful Dog

Lisa Miller claims Shungite water “Is the best water I have ever had. Delicious cold or warm.” Dare you to try it.

I had just finished gorging myself on a de-licious Chinese Buffet and decided to take

a stroll through the mall. I find myself in this trendy ladies’ store. Entering the store, I am greeted by this attractive lady with the most delightful accent. “Come here” she says, “I want to show you something.” She produces a small red spray bottle - there is clear liquid in it and several pieces of some-thing that looks like coal in the bottom. She says, “Here let me spray some of this on your face.” My mind is saying “ummm…not a good idea”, but my mouth is still sporting a smile of sorts. “What’s in it?” I ask, and she says some word I’ve never heard before. Still smiling, I thank her and tell her I’ll pass; when all of a sudden this woman sprays the solution in the air and walks through the mist, letting it fall onto her face. I wait 10, then 15 then 30 seconds – intently watching for blisters to appear on her face, or her skin to change color…45 seconds – still nothing.

Next she turns with a water pitcher with this “coal-like” substance on the bottom and more clear liquid. Then she brings out some paper cups and offers me a drink! Now re-member I just had a huge Chinese buffet and I am so beyond thirsty…my tongue is stick-ing to the roof of my mouth, I’m having a hard time to form words. “Try it” she says. I stand there…logic brain is telling me not to do it, but my mouth is so dry. I ask her if she drinks this on a regular basis and she guaran-tees me she does and with that, tips up her cup and drinks the contents. Again, I wait 10, then 15 then 30 seconds, waiting for her to clutch her throat or fall to the ground, but oh no, she pours herself another glass and drinks that. Okay, I’m in…past the point of no return and I pick up the paper cup and throw it back like a shooter and swallow the liquid in one gulp. “What did I just drink?” And she produces a pamphlet with pictures and write-ups and a website and proceeds to briefly explain about Shungite and shows me

What’s This Shungite?an array of jewelry in a showcase made of this black stone.

Once I’m home I start investigating this mysterious stone. My first stop is the web-site from the pamphlet; http://blueskyherb-als.com.au/shungite_explained. Here I read about this mineral which is only mined in the Lake Onega Area, Karelia in Russia. It is composed of carbon and contains almost every element found on the periodic table. (Remember that from Biology). But what really piqued my interest were the healing properties of this stone.

Shungite is an ecological natural mineral, be-cause of its healing and antibacterial proper-ties, it has been named “The Stone of Life”.

The website goes on to claim; “You just place some Shungite in water and the water will become purified and charged with en-ergy, and is biologically rich.” It also goes on to say; “Skin diseases are treated with Shungite water, the skin is rejuvenated, wrin-kles are smoothed down and skin elasticity is restored. It has regenerative properties,

relieves headaches, backaches, rheumatism, normalizes sleep, stabilizes blood pressure and clears respiratory tracts.”

On www.crystalsrocksandgems.com it states “Shungite is used in some large city reser-voirs to clean up the water”. About Shungite and Healing… “Shungite has been found to aid balancing and healing by absorbing negative energy output. It aids the body in its healing and helps restore emotional bal-ance”. The website also offers following warning. “Do not use Shungite if you suffer from acute cardiovascular diseases, high de-grees of stress, suffer from nervous and psy-chological disorders, acute hypertonia, acute chronic infectious diseases, or if you are in the late stages of pregnancy.”

Wow! Just wow! I had to go back to the store and have another look and do some in-

her physically demanding job of landscap-ing, Lisa had frequent visits to her Massage Therapist - sometimes weekly – but hasn’t had the need to go since she started using Shungite. She used to suffer from bursitis in her knee, but that has settled down and isn’t painful anymore. “The Shungite water tastes good. It’s the best tasting water I have ever had and it is as good warm as it is cold. I take a water bottle to work with me and

vestigating – this stuff was just too good to be true. Same thing happened – she sprayed the water and walked through the mist, and then offered me a drink. I took a long look at the woman – was this her secret to look-ing amazing? We chatted about Shungite, I looked at some jewelry made with Shungite beads – she was wearing a necklace - and she started showing me testimonials of people who have started wearing Shungite brace-lets or pendants. Pain free, more energy, no more swollen joints, on and on…so many claim feeling better since they started using Shungite.

Lisa Miller is a landscaper during the summer months and teaches figure skating from Sep-tember until May. She firmly believes in the healing power of Shungite. The Gardening Lady claims she has noticed several changes since she purchased Shingite stones. “I have always only slept for 4 to 5 hours a night and that sleep was interrupted but since drink-ing Shungite water I sleep the entire night – a good restful, re-energizing sleep.” With

Fashion: Wear Your Label

Animals are non-judgmental, in a world that is

sometimes quick to judge because of age old stigmas.

Page 11: shopfredericton! November 2014

It’s difficult to admit you have a mental illness. It’s tough stuff to talk about. Wear Your Label, a Fredericton born and based business is utilizing fashion as an avenue to help break the stigma that is associ-ated with mental illness and change the conversation. Their objec-tive is to encourage positive mental health and encourage people to “Wear Their Label” and not be fearful of being judged or rejected because of it. Founder Kaley Reed is changing the conversation with her line of clothing.

When someone speaks the words Mental Illness, it conjures up dif-ferent images to different people. Some will envision Jack Nichol-son in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, others will think of a per-son with Manic Depression or Bipolar Disorder. The truth of the matter is 1 in 5 Canadians will experience a mental health issue in their lifetime. This isn’t to say they will be diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder or Schizophrenia – perhaps they experience Anxiety, or Anorexia, or PTSD, or a Phobia. These too, are all forms of emotional distress.

If you are a person experiencing any of these health issues the world can be a lonely place. You feel you are alone, even when surrounded by loved ones. You feel different, even though you look the same and do the same things. It’s difficult to talk to anyone about how you feel. It’s damn hard to tell your kids you need to leave the park and go home because you are experiencing heart palpitations, have sweaty

palms and feel like you’re going to lose your lunch. It’s hard to tell your new girlfriend you have to take anti-depressant medication so you can get out of bed each morning. It’s scary to call work to tell them you won’t be in again – the third time this week.

The person we are talking about wants “normal” – whatever normal is. They will go to great lengths to hide their distress. She will put on her make-up, fix her hair, and put on a smile. He will still go out with his buddies, watch the game, and show up for work. Can’t let anyone know…why not?

All through history society has placed such a stigma on the topic of emotional illness. Speaking about it places the already vulnerable person in a more vulnerable position. When they most need under-standing and support, and probably a hug, they feel they can’t talk about it. Because, by putting it out there, that vulnerable person feels they risk isolation, ridicule, and rejection. What they really need is to know they are okay. They are accepted. They are loved.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could all be like animals? Our animals feel our moods. They sense our pain…but, they still love us. They don’t care if we are crying all day, they stay by our side. In animals, we find the quiet acceptance we sometimes yearn for from the people in our lives. They don’t judge us…they just love us the way we are.

Sprigs of cedar, chrysanthemums, and birch branches look simple, but elegant in this arrangement.

The time for holiday decorating is just around the corner. We recently caught up with Laurie Cole from New View Designs to get some professional tips for bringing the festive spirit

into every corner of our home. The old sayings “Less is more” and “More isn’t better” is true in this case according to Cole. Take a walk and find some white birch, pine and cedar boughs, dogwood branches; some urns, baskets and ribbon - keep it simple. Simply elegant…we think. DESIGNS BY LAURIE COLE

If your home has an architectural ceiling feature – show it off - draw attention to it by hanging ornaments from ribbons. (Use 3M Contact hooks so you don’t mark your ceiling.)

This is a great Wednesday afternoon craft activity with your kid-dies. Use ribbon that coordinates with your décor colors and make paper chains to sparkle in the windows.

Does this say “Welcome”? Beautiful, yet simply (and may I say inexpensively) decorated; pine and cedar boughs fill the urns to overflowing, tuck in some white birch and dogwood, add a ribbon and your friends will be calling you Martha. Finish off with big colorful wreath on the door and boughs tied with ribbon hanging from the lights.

Spraying a small birch tree with silver paint and hanging bows and ornaments from it, made this simple decoration the focal point of the foyer.

Page 17: shopfredericton! November 2014

Bringing splashes of red into your kitchen transforms it into wel-coming, traditionally decorated room. Tie bows onto the backs of chairs. Bring out a few red dishes for accents. Fill a small glass container with candy canes. Red and white silk Gerber daisies fill the globe on the island. This room is crisp, clean and has Happy Holidays written all over it!

Try something different for your tree this year. Color coordinate your tree to your room’s color palette. Use feathers for garland rather than traditional garland. Wrap empty boxes for added decorative effect. Use a blanket or quilt for your tree skirt. One word – exquisite!

More simple ideas; use candles – lots of candles. Use colorful glassware to decorate your table. A tray with Christmas balls on an accent table. Decorate light fixtures with beaded garland. Your only limitation is your imagination.

Do you have a little problem, a teeny little problem? Help has arrived – just Ask Mia

Dear Mia,The other day I was waiting in line at the grocery store while a woman dressed in pink polar fleece pants with Smurfs on them was ringing in her order. She had the sweetest little boy – around 2 or 3 years old. I smiled at him and said “Hi! How are you?” He frowned, walked up to me and started hitting my legs, and then he started kicking me! I quietly asked him to stop. He didn’t. I looked at his mother while he continued to pummel my legs and she smiled and said nothing. This not-so-sweet kid continued to beat and thrash on me – laughing away. His mother looked over and said “Jimmy, if you’re good and I’ll let you play with the rat when we get home.” I was beyond words and Jimmy didn’t stop until they were ready to leave. What should I have done?Bruised

Dear Bruised,Oh my! Well, a number of things come to mind…you could have kicked him back. No, no, just joking with you. This is a tough one…perhaps you could have tied his sleeves together and offered him a quarter if he could get them untied – this would have kept him occupied…or told him to go beat up the Smurfs. I doubt speaking to the mother would have helped therefore speaking to the child probably would have had little effect.

As for your bruises, be thankful short season is done!

Love,

Mia

XOXO

While impaired driving continues to be a huge concern and results in accidents and loss of life and property, distracted driving has be-come one of the leading causes of automobile collisions. In June of 2011, the Province of New Brunswick legislated Hand Held Phone Legislation. With this legislation, it became law that you could no longer make or receive phone calls on a hand held device, unless you were calling 911. Texting while in the driver’s seat is never allowed – even while stopped at a red light. You can look at your portable GPS screen, however, you are not allowed to program it or handle it. Getting caught for any of these offenses could result in a fine of $172.50 and losing 3 points from your driver’s license.

Staff Sergeant James Bates, Traffic Services Co-ordinator with RCMP, J Division states “Impaired driving, not wearing seat belts, and speed remain the primary contributors to fatal collisions in NB. Many jurisdictions are claiming that distracted driving is overtaking other factors as the leading cause of fatal collisions.”

CAA statistics show texting while driving increases your chance of crashing at 23% over a non-distracted driver. According to an article in The New Brunswick Beacon, the Fredericton Police gave out over 200 tickets to drivers between October and December of 2013 for using hand held devices.

Don’t think texting is the only distraction for drivers though. Ser-geant Bates further states, “Driving is an important responsibility and requires one’s full attention. Hand-held devices are covered in the law, but other distractions like food/drink, radio, passengers etc. can lead to unnecessary distraction.”

Sean Daly, owner of First Rate Drivers, feels very strongly, about young drivers knowing the laws and the consequences to not follow-ing the laws. The consequences; not only in terms of human injury and loss of life, but also in terms of property damage, loss of points

and insurance premium increases. Those enrolled in the New Driver Program learn about the laws and how they apply to the new driver in your household as they get behind the wheel.
