Jane Portal: Its opening on November the 15th, this
year, and it’s on the first floor, the Asian wing of the
museum, and the Korean gallery was actually estab-
lished 30 years ago in 1982, and that was to celebrate
the 100th anniversary of the diplomatic relations be-
tween the USA and Korea in 1982 because the diplo-
matic relations were set up in 1882, and then in 1982,
we opened the first Korean gallery, but now it’s 2012,
so that’s 30 years since it was opened, so it needs
renovating.
Jane Portal: We’re renovating the room, and we’re
having new display cases, which are Goppion cases
from Italy, which are the same make of cases as in
our new American wing, so they’re very wonderful
cases. I’m very excited about them. And we’re also
having a different group of objects. Some of them
are the same, but we’re augmenting them, we’re add-
ing to them, by putting in paintings and contemporary
ceramics and screens.
Jane Portal: I arrived in September 2008, and I’ve
been here four years, so it’ll be just over four years.
Jane Porta: That’s right, yes. I worked at the British
Museum for 21 years, and I started off in Chinese art,
so I did a degree in Chinese, and I studied Chinese
archeology in Beijing University in 1979, a long, long
time ago, and then, that’s why I was a curator of Chi-
nese art originally, and then I was asked take up Ko-
rean, because we wanted to do a Korean gallery, and
so I learned Korean at the school of Oriental studies
in London, and I went to Korea in 1994 to 1995, and
I was at Yonsei University, 연대한국어학당, for nine
months.
Jane Porta: Yes, I did, so actually the relationship
with The Korean Foundation goes back a long way,
so they, The Korean Foundation, gave the British Mu-
seum money to renovate their gallery in 1992, but it
took a very long time to do it, and we didn’t open it
until 2000. So I have good relations with The Korean
Foundation from that time, so when I moved here, the
MFA has one of the best Korean Collections in the
west. It’s better than the British Museum’s collection.
Jane Porta: Quality of the collection, yes. It has some
wonderful Celadons and porcelains, and it has some
great Buddhist paintings. It has a really interesting
group of Buddhist paintings from the Goryeo and the
Joseon Dynasties, and so it was one of the attractions
of this job for me when I was offered the job as head
of this department. The Korean collection is so good
that it was a great incentive to come here, because, of
Jane Porta: And the Chinese collection. But, actually,
the Korean collection is one of the best in the west.
It’s just that Korean collections are, in general, much
smaller than Japanese and Chinese collections in most
Western museums, and that’s just really a question of
history.
Jane Porta: Well, one of the things we’re going to do
is to include contemporary Korean ceramics, so that’s
going to be quite interesting, because we can show
how some of the contemporary potters are sort of
engaging with their tradition, and we have works by
Inyoung Kim and Sang-Ho Shin and, who else? Jung-
hyung Cho and then we’ve got this new work we just
purchased by Sookyung Yee who makes contempo-
rary ceramic installations out of pieces of pot shards,
celadon pot shots, which she sticks together, so that’s
Jane Porta: Well, when I lived in Korea, I got to know
quite a few of them, and I met them, and I started col-
lecting their works some years ago, so when I moved
here, I already knew quite a few of them, and some of
them actually donated pieces for the new gallery, and
some of them I’ve purchased.
Jane Porta: Well, the leading contemporary ceramic
artists are fairly well-known, so it’s really a matter
of getting to know them and choosing which ones …
I mean, I’ve chosen ceramic artists who make works
which are really somehow engaged with tradition, be-
cause we have traditional Korean ceramics, so I want
to show artists who are carrying on the tradition, but
in a kind of contemporary way, so that’s really how
I chose them. I’ve also been acquiring screens, so
we’ve acquired at least maybe eight or ten screens
since I’ve been here over the last four years, and
were also borrowing for the opening of the gallery.
We’re borrowing a very wonderful bookshelf screen
from a private collector, a local private collector, and
it’s a really beautiful 책걸이 screen, the one where you
see the bookshelves that look like bookshelves.(글쎄
Jane Porta: Well, they quite often go together. The
things that are the most beautiful and elegant tend
also probably to be the most valuable, but in terms
of value or rarity, we have some very interesting and
rare pieces in the collection. We have one piece,
which is a silver gilt ewer and basin, which is ab-
solutely unique. It would be a national treasure if it
was in Korea. It’s Goryeo Dynasty ewer and basin for
wine, and they also have a Lacquered sutra box, which
is, again, one of only a group of only eight that exist
in the whole world, and we have one of them here. So
we have some very rare pieces. We also, of course,
have the Buddhist reliquary, gilt silver Buddhist reli-
quary.
Jane Porta: Well, a lot of the things were collected a
long time ago, so that’s the interesting thing about the
MFA’s collection. It’s a very old collection, and when
it comes to a lot of the Buddhist paintings, many of
those came from Japan, actually. You know the his-
tory of how a lot of Korean Buddhist paintings ended
up in Japan, and they were stored in Buddhist temples
for hundreds of years, and you may know that at the
end of the 19th Century, there were several promi-
nent Bostonians who went to Japan, and they lived
in Japan, and they became Buddhist. There was a

man called Bigelow and Fenollosa, and then there was
Morse, and Bigelow and Fenollosa, they both became
Buddhists. They lived in Japan for many years. They
studied Japanese art. And that’s why we have such a
huge and wonderful Japanese collection, because they
brought it back. But some of the things they brought
back from Japan were actually Korean, so that’s how
we go the Korean Buddhist paintings, and I’m going
to be showing a small exhibition of Korean Buddhist
paintings in the gallery next to the Korean gallery
when the Korean gallery opens, so we’re going to be
able to see some of those.
Jane Porta: Yes, I have seen it and it was in the room
on its own with the spotlight on it.
Jane Porta: We have a very wonderful Buddhist sculp-
ture. It’s not as big or as wonderful as that one, but
it is, actually, a unified 신라medicine Buddha of gilt
bronze, and it came from a private collection of a man
called 오카쿠라, and 오카쿠라was a Japanese man who
was the first curator here of Asian art, and he per-
sonally collected this Buddha, and so it’s a very high
Jane Porta: It’s interesting that I think, probably, when
they came to the MFA in the late 19th Century, some
of them were probably thought to be either Chinese
or Japanese, but gradually, as you know, the study of
Korean art history has developed in the 20th Century
and the 21st Century, so we’ve become more familiar
with Korean Goryeo Buddhist paintings. I suspect you
know that it was only really in the 1980s that people
began to really identify Goryeo Buddhist paintings,
and before that many of them were catalogued as Chi-
nese or Japanese.
Jane Porta: And gradually, as studies of Korean art
history develop, then I’m sure there will be more Ko-
rean works, which will be identified, but the study of
Japanese art and the study of Chinese art are really
further ahead than the study of Korean art. That’s
just what’s happened in the west that people tend to
study Japanese and Chinese art more because they
are bigger collections.(그렇다.
Jane Porta: We have had lots of collaborations with
Korean scholars, actually. There is one painting,
which is of a falcon, which we lent to the Metropolitan
Museum in 2009, to their exhibition called Korean Re-
naissance, and that one was originally catalogued as
Chinese, and then Professor 안희준 came here from
Korea. He’s the leading professor of art history from
Seoul National University, and he came, and he looked
at it, and the seals are … he identified the seals as by
이암, and so he’s a leading Korean painter, and so we
realized that the painting is by 이암and not by a Chi-
nese artist.
Jane Porta: We have many visitors from Korean
scholars, and we welcome visiting scholars from Ko-
rea. Last year, there was a visiting professor at Har-
vard called 조인수, Professor조인수, and he came here
many times to see the collection and helped us iden-
tify various pieces, and we also have a system going
with the Korea Foundation where we have a … they
have a new program called the global internship, and
so we had an intern--a young scholar--from Seoul
National, and she’s doing her Ph.D., and she came for
three months last autumn, and we’ve got another one
coming this autumn for three months.(이렇게 많은 한
Jane Porta: Her major was in painting, and she was
doing studies of our Korean painting collection, and
this autumn, we’ve got somebody is more in conser-
vation, so she’s going to be doing conservation work.(

A Global SportThe New Talk Mode Taekwondo athletes from across the globe gather in Korea for the World Taekwondo Hanmadang 2012, which kicks off just today. This year’s 20th World Taekwon-do Hanmadang Festival, orga-nized by Kukkiwon, takes place under the theme of ”Unifying the World with Taekwondo” from August 28 to 31. Marking its 40th anniversary, Kukkiwon, also known as the World Taekwondo Headquarters, plans to make the festival more open and appealing to the general public and also hopes to reach out to more global audiences. Such firmly determined plans are well-revealed in the festival’s subtitle, “A proposal towards global citi-zens.” Comparing the exhilara-tion and thrill of this year’s fes-tival to receiving a proposal from one’s beloved, Kukkiwon high-lighted the festival’s new attrac-tions, saying that ”rule changes have added to the excitement of the competitions and the splen-did performances will take your breath away.” Except for Breaking, an event attended by experts, a total of 2,867 contestants from 41 nations demonstrate their skills in vari-ous events of poomsae, kyukpa, self-defense techniques, and tae-kwondo aerobics. Among the total of nine events, a contestant is allowed to participate in just one event either individual divi-sion or group competition. Some of the rules have been changed to add new age groups of 40-49, 50-59, and over 60 for individual divisions, and the number of the participants for poomsae has been reduced to three for the group competition. ”The idea of ‘unifying the world with taekwondo’ hopefully be implemented by presenting substantive programs this year,” said Kang Won-sik, the president of Kukkiwon. “The World Tae-kwondo Hanmadang Festival has continued over the past 20 years since opening in 1992 to bring new attention to the martial art, and now taekwondo is getting
recognized as where the top-rank-ing experts present their upscale techniques and skills.” Since its inception, Kukkiwon has strived to inform the global audiences of the excellence of taekwondo’s ef-fects on mental training and also provided them a chance to learn about the sport by including a vis-it to Kukkiwon in a tour package.Previously in 2008, the World Taekwondo Hanmadang Festival took place atAnaheim Conven-tion Center in California with an expectation that it hopefully served as an opportunity to intro-duce the sport to the global stage. The Festival Organizing Commit-tee plans to step up their efforts to provide more convenience for the taekwondo contestants by es-tablishing exclusive counters in Incheon International Airport to helping them with the registra-tion process and distribution of ID cards and also providing extra services such as pick-up service from the airport and schedule management. On the other hand, the taekwon-do competition was reviewed as having provided more excit-ing and dynamic scenes with the newly adopted rules, electronic hogu (chest protector) and an in-stant Video Replay system during the London Olympic period. The 2012 London Olympic has earned taekwondo the title of World Sport, as enjoyed by more foreign countries. The nation that earned the largest number of medals was Spain, not Korea, collecting one gold and two silvers. In addition to Gabon in Africa achieving their first Olympic medal in tae-kwondo, English teenager Jade Jones from Wales rose to stardom after she appeared at the taekwon-do competition. The inclusion of taekwondo in the 2016 Brazil Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will be decided at Pro-tocol of Buenos Aires by the 2013 International Olympic Commit-tee.

How long has it been since you actually used the call function on your cell phone? Better yet, did you know that there was a call function? However, this mode of communication has become a dying method as more people think this way. It’s not even that you don’t want to hear your friend’s voice; you just can’t stand to sit and talk on a device. Many people think that having to call someone the phone is almost rude. What do you want me to do? Drop everything and talk to you when my phone rings? It’s not like I wasn’t busy doing something else; like sending a text! As an individual, I continu-ously talk on my cell phone as I think it shows more interest than a series of words on a screen, but as many people cut conversations short – it’s an old method of showing priority over whatever you were doing before. And this all started with our original method of text – the email! What does this method of textual con-versation entail? Well, a conversation goes into the power of your hands. Without misspeaking, ever, you can write – erase – rewrite – backspace a few – add – delete – write – and it goes on. You can look at past things someone said and reference the past; you can stop yourself from saying something you will obviously regret later, even though you may still do this because it seems so easy to press ‘send’ as well. And for others who felt that phone calls are intrusive, you can decide to ignore with less stress on your soul. Instead of actually pressing the end button on your phone, you just forget you ever saw the message. The number of texts in a month from US users went from 14 billion in 2000 to a staggering 188 billion in 2010, from the Pew Institute survey, and the trend just keeps rising. When is enough, enough? With an easier keyboard to type on in the market including different languages and user-friendly in-terfaces such as Swype – a method of typing with
an index finger – the younger generation is being sucked into a non-verbal communication era. Amer-icans aged 18-20 years send an average of 88 text messages per day, with an average of 17 phone calls. As we get older, the average mere communication declines, but daily texting at ages 65 and older is still around 4.7 to 3.8 texts. TIME recently published their mobility poll with 32% of respondents saying they even with their close friends, texting is preferred. However, texting is taking off in the work place as well where co-workers who don’t know each other very well are not burdened to chat with each other, but just text. All of the calling that is not taking place anymore suggests that the younger generation is not talking just as much. Development psychologists have been studying patterns in the younger generation and see-ing that negotiating skills, communicating and pure friendships are have difficulty developing. Most adults had already fixed their personal skills when the cell phone first came out, but the children who got cell phones at the same had not. If children can-not have face-to-face conversations, many psychol-ogists relate thins with not being able to understand themselves in return. Many teens’ thinking and reasoning skills have gone down the drain. The new method of apologiz-ing is “I’m sorry” and pressing send, leaving out punctuation or adding it depending on the person. An “I’m sorry!” seems light-hearted, yet an “I’m sorry.” may seem angry. Because there are these nuances that teens think they know, teens in a true apology with eye-contact and the sorry feeling shown in their eyes are a lost practice. Because texting apologies is ‘less painful’ teens like it, but the pain is all part of the process. Therefore, with this less painful situa-tion, many more people cheat in their relationships and visual cues are no longer possible to assess the situation for their significant other. Many students re now afraid of starting a conversa-tion with anyone, but adults are still fine with start-ing conversations. The only problem is, with time, adults too have become conversation-avoiding. How long has it been since you have texted or mes-saged a friend Happy Birthday? How about actually saying it with emotion? What is the point of that for the birthday boy or girl? How many messages they get tell them? The world has changed, but we’re missing out on the true essence of friendships, rela-tionships and family.

Dear Ducky, My fiancée continues to ask me to marry him in a very informal way by randomly bringing it up. This for 1) has got me thinking about what I will say when he formally asks me, 2) if he is informally bringing it up because he is not actually seriously thinking about asking and 3) if I actually like this non-classical way of easing into popping the question of marriage. We have been dating for a while, and at this point my friends seem to want me to say yes to his casual questions. Ask Ducky seems to be for younger readers, but I want to see the perspective of many on this odd way of asking me to marry approach. On-One-Knee
Dear On-One-Knee, It really is up to you. The world has been changing into this non-classical feeling to so many important aspects of life. However, I would wait it out, he might want to ease into the topic but still ask you formally! You can voice your opinion about how he is not taking it seriously and you feel like that portrays into your relationship, and he may get the message that you either want him to hurry up and ask the question or he may start worrying. Hopefully it’s the first answer, but talking to him about your worries seems to be the best way to help your situation.Ducky
Dear Ducky, Coming into high school seems like a totally different school environment from middle school. I did not know that drinking was such a problem with my friends. It is not a problem because of their actions or addiction, but the fact that they are drinking at their age! I know there are a ridiculous number of dangers of starting to drink at an early age and that starting to drink at an earlier age raises the possibility of addiction when older. There are so many health issues including liver failure, which sounds bad enough, that should be stopping my friends to refrain from unhealthy amounts of drinking at weekend parties. Saturday Hangover
Dear Saturday Hangover,It’s hard to get anything into teenagers’ heads at this age. Even though you care for your friends, it’s the best that you take care of yourself and maybe bring your concern up once a year. By once a year, I mean not many times because it is very hard to change their perspective on things that are considered so “cool” or “fun” or whatev-er popularity stands on these days. You personally know-ing that it is bad for you should be a good example for your friends as well, and continue to be yourself!Ducky
Dear Ducky,Who sits at your lunch table is a large part of my middle school; however, there are some people who just kind of annoyingly follow you around and sit right next to you at lunch with your group of friends that seek attention by not leaving your side. Being the nice person you are, you allow them to sit next to your friends, but you don’t know how to tell them that everyone feels uncomfortable. What do I do? What do WE do? Lunch Buds
Dear Lunch Buds, It’s so hard, I know! However, give you friend a chance because it is really hard to just stand up and tell them that they are not welcome there, or that your friends are not welcome to others joining their clique. Everyone has something special to give and giving these newcomers a chance to either fit in or leave may be the easiest way for everyone to be happy. Ducky
Dear Ducky, Summer flings seem dangerous as a guy I met at camp have learned. There is so much passion that goes away just as quickly. We met at a summer camp at the beginning of the summer and now we have been texting away and messaging each other. The steam has died down a bit, but I don’t know how to tell him. He also lives close by, so we have been able to hangout, but I want to break it off.
We are not even really dating so I don’t want to ask him to break it off, because I don’t want to hear those words from him. What do I do?Breaking Cracker
Dear Breaking Cracker, Once school starts, many times these summer flings just slowly die down because of the stress that school brings. You can always ask him the question, “what are we?” and say that you think of him as a really good friend. This usually breaks things off and doesn’t stat things ei-ther. It’s a good way to start or end a relationship. Ducky
Dear Ducky, I came to the United States when I was a freshman in high school, but because I went to an international school in Korea, I am fluent in English. In school, some students make fun of me by saying my English is “broken.” It defi-nitely is not, but I have a slight accent because I learned Korean in Korea. They don’t bully me or are racist enough to be in trouble with the school but because I am in high school, they are just “mean girls.” I am a girl as well, so I was thinking that this is just a problem between girls as well. I first thought this because my brother and I are in the same year and everyone seems to love him. The same girls are so nice to him and he seems so popular after the same amount of time in America as me.Twins
Dear Twins, Guys and girls definitely have a different way of becom-ing a part of a new school. Just give it some time, and you will feel much more incorporated in the school’s social classes. You may also want to talk to your brother about this as he will obviously have found some things out about your school. Since you feel that he has gotten used to the school, you may be able to learn more out of him.Ducky
