HOLMFIRTH Circuit Bi-Centenary Celebration Service at Holmfirth Civic Hall HOLMFIRTH Performance of The Messiah at the Methodist Church

If you are not a member or don’t attend Trinity church, do you know anyone who is and who would go with you to

church that morning? If not, either come on your own (you’ll be most welcome!), or ring our minister, Rev Charlotte Lorimer on 686826 and we will ‘team’ you with one of our church members.

Back to Church Sunday- Sept 26th

Research shows some 3 million people would respond positively if invited to go to church. Back

to Church Sunday provides such an opportunity.

Its emphasis is on individual Christians extending personal invitations to their contacts. It encourages

Christians to regain confidence in doing something that they know they should.

It is also an opportunity for those who have got

out of the habit of going to church, or for those who have thought it is something they should look into, to find an entry point.

In 2009 Back to Church Sunday mobilised around 4,650 churches in the UK to invite their friends to church. As a result over 80,000 extra people

attended church on Back to Church Sunday, with a long-term result of around 10,000 people added to the church in one day.

Honley Trinity first responded to this worthwhile

initiative in 2009. It was an encouraging start. Honley Trinity’s Back to Church Sunday 2010 will

be on 26 September. The Worship Committee invites your support and participation by prayers and action: It is not too early to start prayerfully identifying who to

invite. Nearer the time, leaflets will be made available for use as your personal invitation to your contacts.

Marina Woodhead, our home-grown preacher, will

lead the service that morning. With the traditional warm welcome of Honley Trinity, and your effort in bringing a friend or friends to church, let us make

our Back to Church Sunday 2010 a memorable one.

Things you didn’t know about prayer- perhaps a poustinia?

Shortened Sermon by Rev Charlotte Lorimer, July 25th People like to have things to help them to pray: Some

have a special mat to sit on; some people put a prayer shawl round their shoulders or over their head, some people need a book with special words in- but what

about a ‘prayer box?’ It’s got a special name. Poustinia. Poustinia is a Russian word which literally means de-sert. It’s a box-like enclosure, a traditional part of the

Russian Orthodox tradition. It was a reminder of the caves in the Judean wilderness where Jesus and others spent time. The main times of year to become a

‘poustinik’ would be Lent and Advent.

The poustinia is described as like going into the desert,

a lonely place, a silent place, where one can lift the two

arms of prayer and penance

to God in atonement and intercession.

To go into the poustinia means to listen to God. It’s a place where anyone — in any walk of life — can go for

24 hours of silence, solitude and prayer. A poustinia box or room generally consists of

a bed, a table and chair, a cross, and a Bible.

The things that we pull around us to help us pray are just that- things that help. We have to sit, and be, in the presence of God. It doesn’t matter where we are, we

know from everything we read in scripture that God is looking at us, and our prayer is us looking on God. Sometimes we use words, other times we just sit…..and wait.

Prayers of a Perfectionist

Lord help me to relax about insignificant details, beginning tomorrow at 7:41am.

God help me to consider people’s feelings, even if most of

them ARE hypersensitive.

God help me to take responsibility for my own actions, even

though they’re usually not my fault.

God, help me to not try to run everything. But, if You need

some help, please feel free to ask me!

Lord, help me to be more laid back, and help me to do things

exactly right.

God help me to take things more seriously, especially laughter, parties, and dancing.

God give me patience, and I mean right now!

God, help me to keep my mind on one th — Look, a bird —

ing at a time.

God help me to do only what I can, and trust you for the rest. Would you mind putting that in writing?

Lord keep me be open to others’ ideas, wrong though they

may be.

Lord, help me not be quite such a perfectionist. Amen.

A Craftaholic’s Prayer

Dear Lord, I’m going to need some notice Before my days are done.

You see, I’m a craftaholic.

A fact not known to some. My craft room, it is bulging

All corners, crannies and nooks There are loads of boxes under the bed,

I hope no one ever looks I tell myself when shopping,

“No more crafty bits today,”

But the craft shops are like magnets Drawing me their way.

I’m totally a t their mercy Just "need" a dozen of each.

Then I hurry home to hide them Before the family starts to preach.

So Lord, I’ll need a little time

To dispose of all this stuff. And Lord, can we just keep all of this,

Between the two of us?

Submitted by Karen Stansfield

A pious picnic prayer. They had made it their custom to invite their pious aunt to go with them on their picnic each year. However, this year they forgot. When the invitation did come- at the last minute- she

said, “It’s too late now. I’ve already prayed for rain.”

Surprised? The other day I received a surprise telephone call from an old friend. Emails are fine but they are not as good as a letter, a phone call is good but is surpassed by a personal meeting. So often we sit back and say ‘nobody communicates with me’ but should we not sometimes make the first move?

Perhaps the same is true of our prayers. It’s a two way process. We are very good about telling God what’s wrong, and if he did things our way then the world would be a better place. But what if we listen, listen to God. He answers our prayers, sometimes in the way we would expect, but sometimes in totally different ways. Are we prepared to enter into a dialogue with the God of Surprises? Fr Peter Ford,. Las Palmas de GC Spain - (JM)

This month, which may turn out to be an Indian summer, who knows, we have a real treat- a delicious rich coffee ice cream recipe. Transport yourself back to your childhood by serving it in a waffle cone, or scoop it into a sundae dish and serve with fresh fruit or chocolate sauce

Preparation time: 30 minutes plus 6 hours freezing Serves: 4-6 Ingredients: 600 ml full-cream milk 75g Cafédirect Machu Picchu fresh ground coffee 5 egg yolks 125g Fairtrade golden caster sugar 400ml double cream 1-2 tbsp coffee flavoured liqueur (optional) 75g Fairtrade macadamia nuts, chopped and lightly toasted Method: Pour the milk into a pan. Add the Cafédirect Machu Picchu ground coffee and heat gently over a very low heat. Stir well and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat, whisk and cover. Leave to infuse for at least 30 minutes. Strain through a very fine sieve into a bowl. Beat together the egg yolks and sugar until thick and pale yellow, then add the coffee milk. Gently whisk together and pour back into a clean pan. Heat gently, but do not boil, until the mixture thickens slightly. Pour into a bowl and whisk in the cream and coffee flavoured liqueur (if using) and macadamia nuts. Leave to cool completely and remove any surface froth with a spoon. If you have an ice cream maker, churn the mixture until it begins to freeze. Transfer into a freezer-proof container and freeze for 4 hours. If you do not have an ice cream maker, pour the mixture into a freezer proof container, freeze for an hour and then beat gently to break up the ice crystals. Repeat this twice and then leave to freeze for a further 4 hours. Remove from the freezer 20 minutes before serving. (and you can use the left-over egg-whites for a meringue!)

Peek-a-boo. The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. A nun had put a note on the apple tray: "Take only ONE- God is watching." Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had writ-ten a note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples.”

Them Yorksher Gospels

Luke 7 (Good News Bible) In blank verse – Iambic Pentameters

When Jesus finished saying all these things He took the road toward Capernaum.

A Roman colonel lived there with his man A batman who was very dear to him.

The man was ill and very close to death. The colonel heard that Jesus was nearby And sent some Jewish elders seeking help.

They came to Jesus saying, “Please, please come, This soldier loves our people, and, himself,

Erected here for us a synagogue.” So Jesus went towards the colonel ’s house,

The soldier’s friends came to him with these words: “Don’t bother, Sir, I am not worthy that You come to me, not fit to come to you:

Just say the word, my batman will get well. I take my orders from the higher ranks

Authority is mine and under me My soldiers and my slaves take my commands.”

Amazed was Jesus as he heard these words, Christ turned to those behind Him and He said

“Such faith, believe me, I have never seen Not here, nor back in Israel whence we came.” And, back at home they found the batman well.

Kyema Visit June 2010 - The next chapter By Trevor Jones

It does not seem a year since I wrote my first report on

the visit to Kyema. This visit was to have been next year, but with the death of John Bakanoba* in February, I was invited to attend his memorial service

and the installation of the ‘heir’ of the Bagabu clan of The Bunyoro tribe, Uganda.

On my last visit I was invited by John to try and encourage the committee of the Kyema to be more self sufficient and proactive in their support of the orphans. I

was also there as a visitor and to represent John as he was too ill to be with us. This year my role was different; because of the death of John and my

acceptance as a member of the committee in Meltham which meant I had to attend all the meetings and official functions that were deemed necessary for me to

’officiate’ at. I am delighted to tell you that the Project is alive and

well and ready for the next phase of development. They took my words last year to heart and had painted the Community Centre and had accepted a new

constitution that gave them the decisions on how the finance raised in the UK was to be used.

They had also decided to have a remembrance plaque on the front of the hall, and I, along with John’s sister Jessica, was asked to unveil it. The hall was also given

a new title in his memory- BAKANOBA HALL.

As it was 21 years since the first water project had been started, it seemed a good time to have a new image and a new sign, which has caused a great deal

of interest with many people stopping to have a look ! Visiting many of the children was the highlight of the visit; they are so happy and enthusiastic and want to

thank all their English mums and dads for their continuing support.

Just before I left I was asked to present one of

the orphans with a goat and two chickens to enable them to support

their foster parents. The goat was pregnant, so will give milk and the

chickens will provide eggs. The young lady who received them was

called Sarah, who when asked “if she knew what to do with them” replied

“Yes, of course I do”. I can’t wait to go again in 2011. Trevor Jones **

* John Bakanoba, MBE, came originally from the village

of Kyema, near Masindi, Uganda. He was a member of Meltham Methodist church and one time chairman of Meltham Parish Council. He conceived the first project-

a water supply- on a return visit home in 1988 after Idi Amin had devastated the country. See http://www.melthammustardseed.co.uk /

aid_projects.htm for details. ** Trevor Jones is a local preacher in the Holmfirth

Circuit. His first report from Kyema appeared in our September 2009 issue.

METHODIST CHURCH ADOPTS CARBON REDUCTION POLICY

The Methodist Conference confirmed a pledge to reduce the Church's carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 in line with

government targets after adopting resolutions set out in a carbon reduction report. The Methodist Church in Britain has a carbon footprint of around

120,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum for approximately 8,000 of its buildings. The annual energy bill to the Church and individual ministers is about £19 million a year. Cutting the carbon

footprint has the potential to free up money that can be used for mission.

All local Methodist churches will be asked to sign up to the Hope in God's Future pledge now that Conference has adopted the report.

on the Holmfirth Circuit Leisure Group. Here we are on a sunny day in Ilkley, on the annual August ‘Day Rover’ outing- otherwise known as ‘How far can you get for 50p?’ We took the 1027 train from Hudders field and arrived at

about 1130, ate lunch in Christchurch Methodist’s then had a windy walk up to the Cow and Calf rocks. From there we dropped down to Ben Rhydding to get the train back. Thanks to Edmund and Michael who pioneered the route in

advance to ensure it wouldn’t rain– and it didn’t. The next walk, which will be followed by the usual picnic lunch and afternoon entertainment, is on September 14th and leaves from Wooldale chapel at 11 am. Just in case, take

THE END OF SUMMER

The scent of mown hay on a late summer’s day.

The heavy air heady as wine,

The poppies all blowsy, the bees feeling drowsy,

As on nature’s nectar they

dine.

We feel languid and lazy when mornings are hazy

And the mist slowly melts in the sun,

The gardens have peaked

(and our poor backs have creaked!)

But we’re proud of the work we have done.

Fallen petals and nettles

and weeds on the paths –

All the things we’re too tired to clear,

Soon we’ll feel autumn’s chill and of course then we

will Decide what we’ll tackle

next year! Eileen Hays

Funeral Oration Several children found a dead robin. Feeling that a proper burial should be performed, they found a small

box and some cotton wool wrapping, dug a hole in the back yard, and made ready to dispose of the

deceased. The minister's five year old son was chosen to say the prayer. And so with great dignity, he

intoned, "Glory be to the Father...and unto the Son...and into the hole he goes."

Many Mites make mighty difference A lot of people, believe it or not, have never seen a

Bible and may be uncertain what it is.

The objective of the Gideons, a non-denominational organisation, is to share God’s message of salvation through Jesus Christ by personal witness and through

placing Bibles into people’s hands. The Gideons became established in the British Isles

in 1949. God has since blessed their work. Their work has, in turn,

blessed many people, helping them to seek God and Jesus. Honley Trinity has been supporting the Gideons through prayers and

financial support. Loose change is collected in plastic tubes (called Mite

Phials) provided by the Gideons to cover the cost of providing school testaments and scriptures for people who would otherwise not have the opportunity to read them. Over the years, money collected in Mite

Phials at Honley Trinity Church has been thankfully received by the Gideons.

Over the last few months, £27.60 has been collected in the Mite

Phials and has been sent to Gideons International Huddersfield Branch. Thanks again for your contribution.

Please continue to support this worthwhile cause – Just give

whatever loose change you have – It can be a one pence copper or a two pound coin….

You are also invited to continue to pray for the work of the Gideons in Huddersfield and in other parts of the country and the world.
