The weekend of July 5th and 6th is something a bit special as

Honley gets ready to welcome the Tour de France. The Honley

Business Association has been working hard with village organi-

sations to make this enjoyable for both visitors and locals alike.

Cricket Club- Lots happening here! Entertainment starts

Friday night and continues Saturday from 10am through to 10pm

with music and dancing outdoors, and also on Sunday after the

race has gone by until 6pm. A packed programme of entertain-

ment organised by the Honley Business Association will show-

case the talents of many local acts, including…….

Honley Players premier presentation-

‘Honley does t’ Tour’ a play written by Meg Plummer (as seen on Look North!) plus

big TV screens to watch all the weekend’s sporting events- in-

cluding of course the progress of Le Tour itself. Small entrance

charge to cover costs.

ket Place car park and Concord Street .Both running throughout

the Tour weekend.

Picking and Petanque Honley Civic Society is organis-

ing a Litter Pick of the village in support of the 60th anniversary

of Keep Britain Tidy. It’s on Saturday 7th June in the morning;

meeting at 9.30am outside the Scout Hut, and volunteers will be

welcomed. The Honley Petanque group will serve refreshments

to the players and the pickers between 11.00am and 12.00am

Work on the land. One good sunny Sunday in April saw

the finish of wall maintenance half way up Magdale

Fields. The wall was cleared of ivy and all the small tree

saplings, which were left in a pile to make a good home

for insects and birds.

The two main fields, Magdale Field and Magdale Croft,

have been ‘drazed’ (a local word for a tractor drawn chain

harrow), that scrats out the old dead grass and leaves so

that the ground doesn’t go sour and new grass can grow

better. This was kindly done for us by a local farmer.

Work on the old lorry chassis that will become the

bridge at the west end of the dam is progressing really

well and it is almost ready for painting- just needs a few

strong people to help on a Sunday morning to turn it over

so the other side can be done.

We’re working with the Piscatorials who fish the dam

to repair a hole in the dam wall. There wasn’t a Dutch

boy around to keep his finger in the hole so we’re getting

some puddle clay to stop it up, and it will mean lowering

the water level while the job is done.

Magdale Banking and Trees. The Trust now has official

T & C Planning Approval from Kirklees, to continue the

clearance work on Magdale Banking (see Kirklees appli-

cation 2014/90902, which includes pictures.)

If you’d like to join us for a bit of exercise on a Sun-

day give the volunteers’ coordinator Neil Littlewood a

tery chapel at 10 am on the 2nd Sunday of the month.

We are sorry to report that the

Wednesday youth group has been disbanded. We are informed this

is because Kirklees is unable to sustain the funding. However they

may be holding activities for youngsters at Jagger Lane recreation

ground during the school summer holidays.

Also regretfully due to a drop in numbers the Zumba class has left

the Village Hall. However numbers have picked up for Northlight

Physio’s Pilates on Wednesday and Chris Liversidge is now holding

two sessions on Wednesday evenings – see below for times.

M Didier Chassot French Petanque champion is again visiting

friends in Honley and will be having a game with the Village Trust

Boules Group on Tuesday evening 10th June at about 5pm. So if

you fancy seeing a master player why not pop down to watch?

Of course the next major event at the Hall is on Saturday 5th July as

part of the Tour de France celebrations – see details on front page.

Yorkshire Traction Honley Band invites you to an entertaining evening of music from the Stage

and Screen on Saturday 21st June, 7.30pm at St Mary's Church.

Honley Ladies Choir- North Light Gallery, Sat 14 June, 7.30 pm

You’ve seen the Oscars on TV but will they stand comparison with HLC’s

own Oscar Evening Event? This, the latest in our very successful series of

themed concerts, is when Hollywood comes to Honley. Dress up to the nines if

you want to, and be entertained by the glamour and sophistication of HLC, our

surprise guest crooner and accompanying three piece band. A sumptuous light

supper is also provided. This is definitely a “book well in advance” event as we

confidently anticipate a sell out concert. Tickets £15.00.

Honley Village Trust has a square metre, one of 72, on the Friend to

Friend giant jersey, to be displayed on the T de F route at Bridge

Mills, Thongsbridge, (opposite the new Lidl’s) and should be visible

from quite a distance, as well as from the TV helicopters. There’ll be an

online web album as well, along with info about all the contributors.

Honley does t’Tour’ – a Yorkshire ‘Extravaganza’ planned

for the Tour de France Weekend.

The Tour de France is coming to the very doorstep of Honley

village, and the Honley community is embracing the idea of

making this an unforgettable weekend for visitors and locals

alike. Great teamwork is in evidence, with the Honley Business

Association joining forces with Honley Cricket Club, St Mary’s

and Trinity churches, the Village Trust and The Foresters Arms

to deliver a most enjoyable weekend ‘Extravaganza’ of family

activities, putting Honley firmly on the map as a great destination

to sample Yorkshire hospitality.

As a result of the Tour de France, Honley Business Associa-

tion has encouraged various organisations in the village to work

together, and the legacy will be stronger links within the commu-

nity and more joint ventures in years to come. Honley Business

Association has received part funding from Kirklees, alongside

sponsorship from local businesses, to ensure these events can

take place and gives thanks to all who have contributed.

Your village needs you! We anticipate a great event over the

Tour de France weekend. We are looking for people who would

Sunday, June 8th - annual Songs of Praise at Barkisland

Parish Church, starts at 6.30 pm.

Tuesday June 10th- A recruitment evening at Honley nurs-

ery and infants’ school where we rehearse every Tuesday at

7.30pm. Come and meet us if you’re interested- we’re quite

a friendly bunch of lads!

Monday June 16th- Huddersfield Town Hall free concert for

senior citizens organised by Huddersfield Lions Club. 7 pm.

Friday June 20th- St Bartholomew’s parish church in

Meltham. A concert in aid of Meltham church clock tower

appeal. Tickets for the concert, aptly named “Sing-a-Ding”

are £6 and can be obtained from Scotty’s Barbers in Market

Place, Meltham, or on the door.

Saturday July 5th- Annual ‘Concert on the Hill’ with Colne

Valley Male Voice Choir and Lindley Band at the Hudders-

field Rugby Union ground, Laund Hill, Salendine Nook.

This year's attractions also include - Woodhead Mountain Rescue

Display Team, an interactive Falconry Display, Spring Agility,

Honley band, Saxophone Choir, vintage tractors and cars and willow

modelling. It all makes for a great day out for the whole family.

Schools Summerfest

This year the three Honley Schools, Infant, Junior and High are

joining together to stage the Honley Schools Summerfest on

Saturday 28th June 2.00- 8.00pm at Honley Junior School .

This promises to be a fun filled day out with live local bands,

school performances, family races, pony rides, Huddersfield

Town penalty shootout, various stalls and refreshments.

Lifeboats During the year the Honley & Brockholes Branch of

the RNLI raised £1585 and £637 on souvenirs.

‘Summer Solstice Stanzas’ Free, with refreshments. A

‘Poetry Readaround’ on Monday 23 June 7.15—9.15pm.

Including a musical interlude from Valley Flutes Sextet,

conducted by Carol Baxter. Valley Flutes, now in its 23rd

year, is a musical ensemble made up entirely of flute players.

They perform at a variety of events throughout the year in-

cluding concerts, charity events- and now Honley Library.

Bring a poem to read or just enjoy listening to others.

Story time for the under 5s- 2.30 pm Friday afternoons in

term time. Stories and craft activity. Come on in!

World Marmalade Festival spreads as far as Honley Noel Dransfield of Croft Drive was awarded a Silver Certificate in this year’s World Marmalade Festival held at Penrith, Cum-bria, in March. Ann Shires and Mary Stapleton, also from Honley, were awarded Bronze certificates. There were over 1700 entries in the ‘home made’ class.

HONLEY IN THE GREAT WAR A new book commemorating Honley

in the First World War will be published

by Honley Civic Society in July. Based

on the research done by Cyril Ford, the

book gives details of every man who is

listed on the village war memorial and

of many others connected with Honley.

In addition, there is a chapter on the

letters of two Honley brothers to their mother in 1916, before

both were killed on the Somme.

A history of the Auxiliary Hospital set up in Moorbottom

Sunday School and extracts from newspapers of the time are in-

cluded among the 40 pages of text and pictures. The book con-

cludes with details of those from Honley who opposed the war.

Priced at £7.50, the A4 size book can be bought from the

usual village outlets in July and at the Craft Market on the week

end of the Tour de France.

Reading visitors Do you know anyone who is unable to read or finds it diffi-

cult due to ill health or disability and who might enjoy being read to? St Mary’s Church has enlisted a number of people who are interested in being the readers and are now able to take refer-rals of people who would enjoy being read to.

The idea is that someone from the church will visit initially and pair the person up with a reader and discuss what reading matter would be preferred and enjoyed.

DRAMA ON THE INTERNET

Two Valleys Radio, based in Honley, has started a

radio drama group. The idea is to perform a play

‘live’ on air every couple of months after rehearsing it

on the preceding Thursday evenings. It is work that is fun and

varied. We are looking for play readers who are dedicated to

attending each Thursday.

The station studio is in the barn at Honley Junior School, and it

broadcasts via the internet website www.twovalleysradio.co.uk

Bev Playle, (see item above) a Reader at St Mary’s church, has been trekking through the Yorkshire Dales endeavouring to finish 100 km in 30 hours in aid of Oxfam.
