Dear Friends, Picture the scene, it’s a hot cloudless sky, not a breath of wind on the air. The crowds are gathering round to watch the spectacular event of a tightrope walker about to attempt to cross Niagara Falls. The great tightrope walker appeared pushing a wheel barrow for balance. Some people cheered him on, some begged him to see sense and turn away from his folly. There was one voice in the crowd that was louder than anyone else, shouting, “you can do it, I know you can do it. I have complete faith in you.” There was a silence as the tightrope walker approached the man and said, “You have complete faith in me? Are you absolutely certain?” The man came and stood beside the tightrope walker looked him in the eye and said, “I’m absolutely certain and have no doubt that you can do this thing!” “Alright,” said the Tightrope walker, “hop in to my wheel barrow and I’ll wheel you across!” The man vanished into the crowd as quick as a flash. There seems to be a difference between faith and belief. Faith involves belief, but is more than that. Faith involves putting your money where you mouth is, Faith means both believing and acting on that belief.

Yours in Christ’s service

David

Summer Celebration 8 June You are all familiar with Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child Shoebox appeal and once again this is well under way. If you want to be helping now in the preparations, then please go along to the Crossroads Centre in Meltham on Friday mornings between 9.30 am and 12 midday when the task force meets to prepare fillers, cover boxes, have coffee and a chat.

This year Samaritans’ Purse are asking us to get involved in their ‘Turn on the Tap’ challenge to help provide safe accessible water for some of the poorest and most vulnerable people.

An example is Maria, who has to get up at 2.00 am every day and walk around 13 miles to fetch water. This 11 year old girl has to struggle home with up to 15 litres of polluted water in the sweltering mid-day heat. There’s no time for Maria to go to school. Samaritan’s Purse, through their TURN ON THE TAP campaign are digging wells, repairing boreholes and providing families with simple water filters and by doing so, are making huge differences to lives throughout Africa and Asia. Families can have safe water to drink, communities can improve health and sanitation and children like Maria can go to school. Lives are saved. How can we help? The challenge is for us to pay £2 and walk 4 miles (or as far as you can manage) four miles being the average distance women walk and children have to walk each day to fetch water in many parts of Africa and Asia. This will take place on Sunday 8 June at 4.00 pm, when we will meet in St Mary’s Church for a short service, followed by the Walk and a Barbecue. Please sign up on the list in church for numbers for catering.

Report on the Parish Annual Meeting – April 22nd

36 people attended the Annual Meeting for the Parish. This meeting confirmed the elections made at the Annual Meetings of St Mary’s (SM) and St George’s (SG) Churches respectively with the following results: Churchwardens: John Ambler and Clive Waind (SM)

Margaret Kenworthy and Rosalind Watt (SG) PCC Members: John Dean (SM) (See below)* Sidespersons: Re-elected en bloc + Josephine Swallow (SG) Electoral Roll Officer: Peter Wildman (Parish & SM) Elizabeth Mosley (SG) Independent Examiner: Simpson Wood of Huddersfield. Peter Wildman (Electoral Roll Officer) reported a total of 224 people on the Roll of whom 35 reside outside the parish. The Annual Report (prepared by the Secretary) and the Financial Statement (prepared by the Treasurer and audited by Simpson Wood) were both available. On the positive side, accounts for 2007 showed income of £96,447, costs of £91,347 giving a surplus for the year of £5,100. The Parish Share continues to rise, as do charges for gas and electricity, whilst it is impossible to foresee what repairs etc. may become necessary in 2008. Ian Walter described the financial situation for 2007 as “positive but fragile”. Pauline Adams (SM) and Roger Kenworthy (SG) were thanked for their work as treasurers. Churchwardens’ Reports for both churches had been presented at their Annual Meetings and were accepted with thanks. The Vicar thanked everyone for their support and contributions to church life, stressing that we should have a sense of purpose and mission in taking the church out into our communities with everyone playing a part. The meeting closed with the Grace and was followed by an excellent slide show presented by Margaret and Roger Kenworthy illustrating their visits to New Zealand and their recent visit to Andrew and Debbie Smith.

Cliff Green, PCC Secretary

* Following the meeting Clive Green kindly volunteered to fill a vacancy for St Mary’s on the PCC. There is still one vacancy for 2 years for St Mary’s

Do you have a vocation? Some people think that vocation is just for special peopleO.but God calls us all to live our lives shaped and directed by his call. “Life Calling” explores the meaning of vocation for everyone. “Life Calling”, a five session course on vocation, is taking place on Monday evenings in June in the Diocese, starting on 2 June. Please see notice in St Mary’s church porch for more information and details of how to apply. There is a charge of £15 per person.

HONLEY NEWS

Youth Project Scoops Prize

Members of The Link Coffee Wagon were delighted to receive the annual Community Award from the Village Trust. The Village Trust have been very supportive of our project and this really is 'the icing on the cake' for us. When the vase has been engraved it will be kept on display on the table at the back of church.

Going Green As part of a green initiative we approached the PCC to request compost bins for our copious volume of plant waste. This was agreed and 3 black bins with top lids have been placed on the border at the side of the church. Two are already quite full but as the material continues to rot down there will be room to add more. The third (larger) bin is almost empty. Please put all soft plant material and vegetable waste (including used tea bags) into the bins, but please no woody material and absolutely no oasis, paper or ribbon from plants and flowers. Grey bins are available close to the parish room door for non compostable and non recyclable waste. When rotted down, the compost will be taken out through the opening at the base of the bins. It will be bagged for anyone who wants it for their garden. The messy pile behind the parish room is now much shrunk, so please don't make it grow again, use the bins instead. Hopefully we can eventually make this vanish altogether. A big thanks to Councillor Terry Lyons and Kirklees Council for their rapid response and provision of 2 free bins. The larger bin was obtained from Shirley Turner's "Church Necessities Fund".

Dear Friends Please accept my heartfelt “Thank You” for all the cards, flowers and plants sent for my recent 80th birthday and above all the Good Wishes which I received with pleasure and gratitude.

Men’s Society Many thanks to Godfrey Blount for his willingness to come and talk to us. Godfrey asked us a very interesting question, “Who do you say I am?” He proceeded to enlighten us about his past and when he became a Christian. More importantly he showed that indeed each one of us, although members of Christ’s body, the Church, do not know one another that well. Many of us did not know about Godfrey’s interests and skills in sports, in his earlier days, because when we meet in Church, we have limited opportunities to get to know one another. On behalf of the Men’s Society, thank you Godfrey for a very interesting and inspiring evening.

John Ambler

Cemetery Clean Up Our sincere thanks to the valiant few who cleared a part of the cemetery on the May Clean Up Day. We would be very grateful for some more helpers with their strimmers next month, Saturday 14 June, 10.00 - 12.00 noon. The area to be covered is a large one and Kevin Littlewood has done and continues to do a great work. If anyone is willing to assist in this or any other way at other times, please contact him at 7 West Avenue.

Henry Stapleton

In the last cemetery clean up we used strimmers and a hover-strimmer to cut part of the grass in between the graves. There were only a few of us and we do need more volunteers to help so we can keep up with the grass growing. It’s hard work but satisfying to see the difference you can make.

Andrea Gosslin gave our talk at the May meeting. She told stories both funny and sad about her work as a nurse in private homes, hospitals and Care Homes and proved that our own members can have very interesting tales to tell. Thank you, Andrea. The Deanery Quiet Evening will take place on June 24th at Newsome Church at 7.30pm. We are grateful to Beth Pearson who arranges the transport for us. Our speaker on June 4th will be the Rev. David Barnes. The subject of his talk is unknown at the time of going to press but everyone is welcome to join us. We are thinking and praying for our members in parts of the world where life is very difficult at this time and we realize how very fortunate we are that we can meet in fellowship so freely.

Choir News Apart from rehearsing for several special services to come later this year, the Choir have been on their travels. On Thursday 8 May some of us joined together with choristers and musicians from Meltham, Almondbury and Kirkheaton to sing at Kirkheaton Parish Church at the Archdeacons Visitation Service (when all Churchwardens are sworn in to office for the coming year). On Monday 12 May all the choir went to a ‘Meet, Eat and Sing’ event at All Saints, Cawthorne, organised by our area of the R.S.C.M. We not only had a splendid supper, we sang under the guidance of Simon Lindley music with a theme “ A Carol is not Just for Christmas”. The wedding season is upon us, so together with holidays to be fitted in we shall be busy.

St George’s Day – Sunday 27th April 2008

The 3rd St George’s Day Celebration to be held in Brockholes looked like being a bit of a washout as the gazebos were being put up about 9.00am. However, at midday a magic switch turned the rain off and with the mild temperature, people were able to enjoy, both inside and out, the various activities on offer. A short act of worship was conducted at 11.00 am with coffee following. Children began arriving for the dragon procession, a real splash of bright green and red colours and just after midday it wound its way down the church drive to meet up with the Honkers Band outside the village hall. From here the procession made its way to the Recreation Ground and completed one circuit. The very wet ground underfoot made once round sufficient. Back up to the church still to the strains of the Band who assembled in the grounds and played a number of well-known tunes for everyone’s entertainment. People made the most of the barbecue, face painting and games (all outside) or enjoyed the windows inside the church, beautifully decorated by village organisations and chatted over a cup of tea. At 1.30 pm there was a really super attendance inside the church to celebrate St George with hymn singing, demonstrations by the children of the Karate Club, Brocks and AD all tied together with words of enthusiasm and praise from Rev. David Barnes. The Organising Committee would like to thank everyone who helped in the development and preparation of the day but mostly to the many people who came along and participated so enthusiastically. The warmth of the village community spirit was very evident and this made the day a great success. Sue Clay is already designing a bigger and better dragon for next year! It was with great pleasure that a cheque for £100 was sent to Marie Curie. We look forward to seeing Dragon (mark 4) and you there in 2009.

Mollicar Woods Sing - Sunday 11th May Getting up at 7.00 am on a beautiful, misty Sunday morning was a bit of an effort after a busy week, but what a wonderful way to start the day! Over forty hardy souls (and a couple of dogs) gathered past Royd House Farm, towards the bottom of Farnley Line, to sing a selection of well known hymns with gusto and walk through the bluebell laden woods. Organised by Almondbury Methodist Church, this traditional ‘Sing’ follows the same paths each time through Mollicar Woods, under the shadow of Castle Hill. First off was Praise ye the Lord! ‘Tis good to raise our hearts and voice sing his praise - to the tune of Almondbury of course! Singers were competently supervised by conductor John Shaw. The walkers congregated under the Great Beech Tree for the second round of singing and then at the top of the field near Farnley Village to complete the selection of 18 hymns. These had included Deep Harmony, O For a Thousand Tongues, All Hail the Power of Jesu’s Name and Love Divine. To finish, a rousing rendition of Thine Be The Glory, with the sun by this time blazing with surprising heat at 9.00 am . Join in next year - it’s a memorable way to celebrate Whitsun!

AD

For the May AD meeting the theme was ‘ the outdoors’ – gardening and games. The evening was perfect so after the usual discussion on a serious topic, this time aspects of friendship, it was out and into clearing the AD flower bed, planting new plants, perfecting the letters AD in pebbles and sowing sunflower seeds to take home in individual pots. Colin Drake came along with some outdoor games equipment and gave the youngsters a short spell of skittles – great fun and rivalry. AD will not be meeting until the autumn due to some school activities falling on the same date in June. We hope everyone has a great summer and look out for notices of the first autumn meeting.

For Mums Everywhere A woman, renewing her driving licence, was asked by the counter clerk to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself. ‘What I mean is’, explained the clerk, ‘Do you have a job or are you just a...?’ ‘Of course I have a job’, snapped the woman. ‘I’m a Mum’. ‘We don’t list ‘Mum’ as an occupation, “Housewife” covers it’, said the clerk. This was forgotten by the woman until some months later, a similar situation arose at another institution. ‘What is your occupation?’ asked another officious clerk. The woman hesitated for only a fraction of a second then said, ‘I’m a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations’. The clerk froze and looked up as though she had misheard and the woman repeated the title slowly, emphasizing the significant words. The clerk then wrote down the description and asked with new interest, ‘Just what do you do in your job?’ The woman heard herself saying, ‘I have a continuing programme of research (what mother doesn’t) in the laboratory and in the field (otherwise indoors and out). I’m working for my Master’s (first the Lord and then the whole family) and already have four credits (all daughters). Of course the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities (any mother would agree) and I often work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run of the mill careers and the rewards are more to do with satisfaction rather than purely monetary. The woman felt she had scored a point against bureaucracy and gone on record as someone more distinguished and indispensible to mankind than ‘just Motherhood’. Does this make grandmothers ‘Senior Research Associates in the field of Child Development and Human Relations’ and great-grandmothers ‘Executive Senior Research Associates? Aunts could also be ‘Associate Research Assistants.

Wedding Season A British girl took her American boyfriend to church one Sunday morning. During the service, the vicar read out the Banns of Marriage, ending with, “This is for the third time of asking,” at which, the perplexed American whispered loudly to his girl, “Say, how many times does a fella have to ask a girl in this country?”

********** The very nervous bridegroom, when asked in the wedding service, “Wilt thou take this woman to be your lawful wedded wife?” replied trembling, “I wilt”.
