I am absolutely delighted that during October we shall be welcoming Beverley Playle as our new Reader. Bev served as Reader at All Saints’ Marple, in the Diocese of Chester, before she moved to live in Honley. Bev’s license will be transferred to our Diocese on Saturday 12th October and there will be a celebratory communion service at 3.00 pm on that day in Wakefield Cathedral. The day after, on Sunday 13th October, we shall be celebrating Harvest at the morning service both at St Mary’s and at St George’s. Human productivity is a participation in God’s creative love, and that is particularly obvious when we give thanks for the earth’s resources. Harvest thereby becomes not a sentimental denial of the problems which face the earth, but a celebration that God’s love in Jesus Christ transforms the earth. What the occasions have in common is that they are both about receiving the gifts God has given us: to his world in the food we eat and the clothes we wear; and to his Church in the service of the people he has gathered together in our parish. Both Bev’s licensing and our Harvest Festival therefore pose a question to each of us: what particular gift has God given to you to serve his people? For example, it might be that you have a musical gift, or a gift for teaching the Bible to children or young people. It is tempting to decide what we should like God to do among us, and then to search for people who might be able to bring that desire about. But that quickly leads to frustration, and any growth which comes about as a result tends to be short-lived. It is much better to discern what gifts God has given us as the body of Christ in Honley and Brockholes and then to receive those gifts with joy.

Parish Giving Responding to God’s love enabling mission and ministry
It is now eight months since we temporarily closed Parish Giving Corner. The financial challenges for the Parish remain the same, so
here we share with you again the key messages of giving:
The connection between faith and giving - giving is a response to a generous God.
Regular giving enables mission and ministry, both locally and beyond.
Regular giving works best using a planned giving scheme. If you are able always use Gift Aid to maximise your giving.
‘Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not
reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver’ (2 Cor 9:7)

Music and Worship at St Mary’s and St George’s ‘Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.’ (Ephesians 5.19, 20) When people are filled with the Holy Spirit, they instinctively sing. It is a great help to our singing if there are people who can accompany us! In the past, God has given the gift of organ-playing to our congregations, and it might be that you know someone who has that gift and would like to use it to God’s glory in our churches. Alternatively, there might be a different musical gift you or someone you know could offer. Please give thanks for those who make music in our churches, pray for others to join them, and be open to receiving whatever musical gift God gives us. He is a God of surprises, and those surprises are better than anything we could ever imagine.

Report on the DCC Meeting held on 20th August
Sixteen members were present when Liam opened the meeting with a reading and a prayer. Having unanimously accepted the minutes from the previous meeting the DCC was informed that a meeting with a representative of Ecclesiastical Insurance and Kirklees Youth Service to clarify the situation regarding the use of the Parish Room kitchen had been arranged for early September. The “Cantorelli” concert was rearranged for Saturday, October 19th. Clive Green, Treasurer, circulated the General Fund figures up to July 31st and explained a number of points. The new hymn books have cost £2,312.50. Donations and reclaimed gift aid has covered all but £667 of the costs. Liam has agreed to cover this from ministry funds. Organ repairs recently carried out have been covered by a donation of £15,000 and a grant from the Sir John Priestman Trust of £5,000. Thanks were expressed to Pam and Terry Kelly for their initiative in organising the grant from the Trust which provides money specifically for church organ refurbishment. More work is required on the organ and a wide-ranging discussion emphasised the need for the whole question of future work and the situation regarding organists to be considered. In his report Liam spoke of the need for the DCC to facilitate the witness of the church - with children’s work, witness and a ‘culture of invitation’ - inviting people to join us, being high priorities. Transformational Planning Group reports were received from all 5 groups and included the following:

Under Any Other Business the DCC approved the use of church for a concert on Wednesday, December 11th by “Mixed Harmony”. It was agreed that the form requesting inclusion of a relative in the Book of Remembrance be revised together with the list of names for ‘Year’s Mind’. There was a request that the Prayer Corner be moved from the Children’s Corner to the Lady Chapel.

As summer is now drawing to a close and what a summer it has been (no complaints this year) I would like to remind all who kindly fill a shoe box or participate in any other way that this year’s campaign will be soon taking place. I haven’t had any notification yet when the dates are or where the boxes are going this year. But it normally starts at the beginning of November for around three weeks. So start collecting the * usual things, or money donations are acceptable to help with transportation costs. Please remember sweets must be in date up to March 2014. If you want to cover your own shoe box that is okay but we will be bringing covered shoe boxes and leaflets to church at a later date. Any questions, see me, Cynthia Hepper or Margaret Allison. I am very proud of how St Mary’s responds to this appeal, so many thanks in anticipation.

The Coffee Morning raised a wonderful £215.35 towards the Diocesan Anniversary Bookmarks. A sincere thank you to everyone who helped organise and who supported the event. The attendance at the Wave of Prayer Service was disappointing. However, it was held over the lunchtime following the Coffee Morning. Next year we will try to avoid a clash of dates. The Deanery Festival Service on 16th September, led by Rev Liam Beadle, was a delightful occasion and a good attendance from the other Branches produced a very enjoyable evening. Thank you to the choir and Jean Cheeseman for their music. It was my first time organising such an event and I am very grateful for all the help received from members and Liam. We also had the pleasure of enrolling Beverley Playle as our 42nd member of the Branch. The collection of £106.75 will go to MU Worldwide. The Emergency Toiletry Packs are in constant demand for sudden admissions to hospital. This is an on-going project and if you can help sponsor a bag by giving a small donation we welcome your support. To date we have produced 30 packs which have gone to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Our next Meeting is on Wednesday 2nd October at 7.30 pm in Church when we welcome Liam Beadle talking about ...Liam Beadle. Everyone is welcome. During a short visit to this area Beth Ingram, President of Adelaide, Australia will be attending a Coffee Morning on Saturday 12th October from 10.30 – 12.00 noon at All Hallows, Almondbury. Why not call in and find out more about one of our Link Diocese. On October 18th at 7.30 pm at All Hallows, Almondbury our Deanery Leader, Hilary Pollard, will be presenting another stage of ‘The Seeds We Sow’. This concentrates on growing your Branches by inviting anyone you know who may be interested in joining Mothers’ Union.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance
Thank you to all of you who have supported this appeal in recent weeks and months. I am especially grateful that, despite Cynthia Warrington’s death, you are continuing to support the West African ladies in having bras to wear and at the same time, are helping to raise funds to enable the Yorkshire Air Ambulance to continue in its daily life-saving work. It would be wonderful if you could all now try and encourage one or two of your friends either locally, or even further afield, to collect bras through an organisation, church, school, hospital and so on and let me have them (even if you think they are only worthy of the black bin – they are not!). So let’s get collecting another 100 or so before you all start thinking about Christmas. Any problems or queries, do please get in touch with me.

Tuesday October 22nd is the Diocesan Council Meeting at Batley Town Hall from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm. The special guest speaker is from Mary Sumner House talking about Social Policy. Come along as it is open to everyone. At our November Meeting in Church the speakers are Laurence and Elizabeth Jones talking about their time in Mara, Tanzania. A date for the diary - Wednesday 11th December 2013 at 7.15 pm sees a return visit from the very entertaining musical group ‘Mixed Harmony’. Tickets are £5 in advance or £6 on the door which includes refreshments and a Lucky Ticket Number Draw. Proceeds will be split between MU and St Marys. Tickets will be on sale from the 6th October. The search continues for someone willing to take on the duties of Branch Co-ordinator. Please pray that we may find the right person as the future of our Branch is at stake. Finally, please remember in your prayers Suzanne Dufton our Secretary who has been in hospital. She is on the road to recovery and we wish her well.

I just want to say a big thank you for all your thoughts and prayers over the past months. It has been a long, hard, journey but I couldn’t have made it without all of you. To all who have visited, telephoned, shopped, vacuumed, brought Communion, driven me to Church and assisted me in throwing out an accumulation of paperwork that I’d “saved in case I needed it” - you are gems and I’ll never be able to repay the kindness. If I’ve learned anything it’s patience, humility and to ask for help and allow it to be given. Hopping about on one leg for twelve weeks made me realise how hard it is for those who will never be able to put both feet on the ground and yet get on with life. I am improving week by week and the Lord is with me and gives me strength and determination. He also sends all of you - my Church Family - to give me support both physically and spiritually.

It always will have. We arrived in Honley as newly-weds, a family of two. Fifty years later we gathered - a family of fifteen. AD There is nothing like starting a new session with a firm, old favourite and so for our opening meeting it was tie-dyeing t-shirts. With our highest ever attendance it was a busy evening and, just to make things a little more demanding, the rain decided to come down in buckets! Never mind, everyone went home with a carefully dyed but somewhat soggy t-shirt, however, hopefully when dry, transformed into a delightful pattern. The October meeting on Thursday 10th October, 6.30 to 8.00 pm will have activities centred round the Harvest theme and children have been asked to bring a tin of something edible to go to the Welcome Centre.

Brockholes Village Litter Pick
Honley Civic Society are organising an Autumn Litter Pick across the Holme Valley. Brockholes Village Trust are taking part and ask volunteers to meet in the Recreation Ground on Saturday 5th October at 9.30 am. Kirklees Council are providing bags, gloves and will collect full bags the following week from a collection point.

Harvest Thanksgiving 2013 The Harvest will be celebrated on Sunday 13th October with a Communion Service at St George’s at 11.00 am and a United Songs of Praise at 3.00 pm at Brockholes Methodist Church. Gifts in kind will be sent to the Welcome Centre who are always short of tinned fish, tinned meat meals, tinned fruit, stock cubes, instant gravy, ‘cuppa’ soup, biscuits, instant noodles, instant mash, jam and sugar. Other dried goods are also welcomed. Cash collections from both Brockholes Churches will be sent to the Epilepsy Association.

News from Brockholes School In 2012-2013 staff, children and parents all worked really hard in order to enable school to achieve the many things that we did which included our Ofsted Inspection in December when we were rated ‘Outstanding’ in all areas and our SIAMS Inspection in June when we were also rated ‘Outstanding’ in all areas (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools). The highlights for me included the Storytelling Week as well as the various educational visits, theme days and residential trips. During last year we raised over £1,000 for charities, which included events which were organised by groups of children and we also raised over £5,000 for extra resources for school. I am sure the new academic year will bring many more achievements that will make us all very proud at Brockholes. As usual I’m aware that many things are already on the agenda for a very busy year. Educational visits to Eden Camp, Bradford Industrial Museum, Bagshaw Museum and Cliffe House have already been planned for this term. Cliffe House (Shepley), Whitby and Robinwood (Todmorden) have been booked for residential visits as well as day visits for all classes to Cliffe House later in the year. All children have come back to school ready for learning about their exciting new topics. Reception has the topic ‘Ourselves’, Years 1 and 2 have the topic ‘Houses and Homes’, Years 3 and 4 have the topic ‘Ancient Egypt’ and Years 5 and 6 have the topic ‘World War II’. We also have an exciting new range of clubs this term, including Video Production and Historical Drama as well as the sporting and musical favourites that children enjoy. This year we have introduced a ‘Year of Sport’ at school. Children will be taking part in many sporting challenges throughout the year and we were delighted to have local sports personalities to launch the year by sharing their own stories about how they have got to where they are today.

Bible Sunday: 27th October Have you heard the amazing story of the Bible in China? How it’s gone from being a banned book to a bestseller? How it’s part of incredible Church growth, where around a million Chinese people come to faith every year? Bible Sunday, organised by Bible Society, is an annual opportunity to celebrate the blessing of owning and reading your own Bible. This year, it’s also a time to join the amazing story in China – by helping provide Bibles to Chinese Christians too poor to afford a copy of the Scriptures themselves. In the last 12 months, a million people have come to faith in China, according to estimates. That’s equivalent to one more person making a commitment to Christ by the time you read this article. These new Christians are mostly from rural areas and they are mostly poor. It means the cost of a Bible is simply out of their reach and it’s created a huge Bible shortage. Nearly half of all Christians in China don’t own a Bible. In some places 10 Christians have to share a single copy of the Bible between them. Earlier this year, the Chinese government gave permission for the printing of 3.5 million Bibles for the churches there. They’ll be printed at Amity Printing Company in Nanjing, which is part-owned by Bible Society. The printing presses are ready to roll with the capacity to print almost 50 Bibles every minute. It’s only the cost of the paper that’s missing (it costs 80p to buy the paper for one Chinese Bible). Through Bible Sunday, you can help raise funds to buy Bibles for Chinese Christians. The Bible Sunday theme this year is ‘the Bible’s message of freedom’ and there are lots of free resources to download including children’s activities, fundraising ideas, an origami dove challenge, and a four-week home group study on spiritual freedom.
