The SEG EMA – Management System is an energy management diagnostic tool

which assists leadership in the evaluation of energy management practices and

aids the leadership team in identifying the critical energy management practices

to improve. The above diagram illustrates the process in a team would

participate. This self assessment allows the team to take a balanced approach

when setting a strategic direction for their energy efficiency program.

The SEGEMA diagnostic tool is composed of three components:

Strategic, Enabling and Functional.

• The Strategic Component evaluates how senior management has positioned the energy

program for success. It prompts senior management to consider a well communicated

plan, establishing well defined performance metrics that translate performance to the

company’s overall business plan and ensures that the program design includes a regular

review and revision process.

• The Enabling Component evaluates the infrastructure in place to allow for managing the

energy conservation initiative strategically and comprehensively. This component

considers the importance of linking the energy team activities to the organizations

current business practices, prompts processes to be put in place which will recognize

success, raises awareness throughout the organization and tracks the cost of energy

team activities as well as the financial benefits.

• The Functional Component evaluates the degree to which energy efficient business

practices have been integrated into standard operating procedures, protocols, and work

instructions. This component also ensures we have established an appropriate baseline

to measure progress and have energy intensity data and reporting mechanisms in place

to better manage an effective program.

Each of the three components in the diagnostic is sub-divided into the

specific elements noted in the above management systems diagram.

Each element has four levels of rigor- Level 0 (Entry Level) through Level

4 (Sustaining Level).

The SEGEMA- Management System assessment is designed to identify the critical steps required to gain balance, increase momentum and contribute

to sustainability. The summary reports provide an excellent view of component balance.

The SEG EMA- Management System diagnostic tool is a critical part of an organizations continuous energy improvement toolbox. This assessment is intended to initiate your program’s review and action plan revision process each year. The results of the assessment allow leadership to quantify how

the organization is transforming into a sustained culture of continuous energy improvement.

In order for a continuous energy improvement process to be sustaining, the program sponsor needs to assess the culture change which is taking

place from an energy management perspective. The SEG EMA assessment tool is an excellent tool in achieving those results.
