1. General Information
1.1 Diamond and CBN
Diamond
Diamond is pure carbon in a cubic matrix. It exceeds other abrasives like AI
2O
3
and SIC by far in hardness and wearresistance. Only at temperatures above700°C diamond turns back to graphitethus loosing its particular features. Dueto chemical af finity graphization alsooccurs when working most steels. Forindustrial purposes synthetic diamondis mostly used nowadays. It is producedby applying high temperatures and highpressures to graphite which turns intodiamond. To hold the diamond particlelonger in resinoid bonds each singlegrain is metal coated. This also resultsin a better heat dissipation during thegrinding process.
Applications: – grinding of hard materials (tungsten
– grinding of wear resistant coatings – grinding of fiber-enforced plastics
CBN
From a hardness point of view CBN isthe hardest material next to diamond.
It consists of bor and nitrogen and ismade in a process similar to diamondsynthesis. It has a higher thermal andchemical stability than diamond. Hence itis possible to work steels above 55 HRC.Due to the wheels‘ low wear it is easierto keep narrow tolerances in comparisonto conventional wheels. The tools groundwith CBN generally have a longer tool lifeas the cool grinding CBN causes hardlyany temperature damages.
Application: – grinding of steels (hot and cold working
steels, die steels, ball bearing steels) – grinding of stellites, nickel-, chrome-
and cobald-based alloys

Spezielle For-men bzw. Abmessungen können nachZeichnungen gefertigt werden. Folgendeallgemeine Hinweise sollten beachtetwerden:
– Schleifscheibendurchmesser:
This catalogue shows an overview ofstandard grinding wheels for a greatvariety of grinding operations. The
wheel shapes correspond with therecommendations of FEPA, the EuropeanFederation of Manufactures of AbrasiveProducts. Additional to the standardprogram we manufacture specialmachine respectively application orientedwheels. Special shapes and dimensionscan be manufactured after technicaldrawings. The following hints shouldgenerally be considered:
– Wheel diameter:
As a general rule the diameter of the
wheel should be chosen as big aspossible. Thereby better thermal andkinematic conditions are achievedwhich result in better economics. Atany case, when selecting the diameterthe recommended speeds have to beconsidered.
– Width of the rim:
The rim should have only the width thatis required by the operation to ensure aneven wear of the wheel. Larger contactareas result in a higher pressure andbigger wear. Only in manual grinding
a larger width has the advantage of abetter guidance during grinding.
– Hole:
The size of the hole is determined by thespindle of the grinding machine and theflange.
– Material of the body:
The choice for the material of the bodydepends on the bond system, the
dissipation of heat, the stability and thedamping behaviour.

Beispiele:
– Hohe Zeitspanvolumina mit hohenRautiefenwerten erzielt man mit denKorngrößen D 252 – D 181 (B 301 –B 252 – B 181).
– Geringe Rautiefenwerte – verbundenmit schwachen Abtragsleistungen – mitden Korngrößen D 46 – D 39 – D 25(B 91 – B 76 – B 64).
The size of the diamond or CBN gritdetermines the stock removal rate of thegrinding wheel and the possible surfacefinish on the work piece.
Examples:
– High stock removal rates with highroughness are achieved with the gritsizes D 252 – D 181 (B 301 – B 252 –B 181).
– Good surfaces finish combined withlow stock removal rates are achie-ved with grit sizes D 46 – D 39 – D 25(B 91 – B 76 – B 64).
In CBN grinding speed and coolant oftenhave a larger impact on the surface finishthan the grit size.

The concentration is the content ofdiamond in the rim. C 100 means4.4 carats (1 carat = 0,2 g) of diamond
per cm3. This is the equivalent of25 vol. % diamond grit in the rim. Usuallyconcentrations from C 50 to C 150 areused. As the density of diamond andCBN differ only little C 100 in a CBNwheel also means a 25 vol. % part ofCBN in the rim.
Concentration is one of the most
important features of a grinding wheel asit influences stock removal rate, surfacefinish, tool life, profile stability and price.
Remark: Sometimes in CBN wheels theconcentration is designated with V240which is about the same as C100.

The diamond and CBN-grit is enbeddedin the bond. Its task is to hold the gritin the wheel as long as it is still cutting.
Hence the bond has to be adjusted tothe blunting of the grit in order to createspace for chippings. With the correctspecification of the wheel (grit size, bond, concentration) the wheel works in a self-sharpening state for a longer period oftime.
Generally four types of bonds can bedistinguished:
– Resin bond (K):These bonds create low grindingforces. This also results in a coolgrinding so that they have a wide areaof application.
– Metal bond (M):These bonds are harder and morewear resistant than resin bonds andtherefore create higher grinding forcesand heat. They are especially suitablefor profile grinding and for the grindingof wear resistant materials.
– Electroplated bond (G):This bond is on a metallic body. Byelectroplating up to half of the grit willbe above the bonding level. Hencethere is a lot of space for chips.Especially for dif ficult profiles and forplastics this type is suitable.
– Vitrified bond:Vitrified bonds can be produced in arange of hardnesses and with different
percentages of pores. They can bedressed easily with both stationaryand rotary dressing tools. VitrifiedCBN wheels are used for internal andexternal grinding, profile grinding orsurface grinding. Due to a low level ofgrinding forces tight tolerances can bekept.

Coolant
In nearly all grinding operations with
diamond or CBN wheels coolants have apositive effect on the process. Cooling ingeneral has several functions: reducingthe temperature generated in the grindingprocess and carrying the heat away, removing the chips and cleaning thewheel.
Possible coolants are:
– oil: good lubrication, little cooling effect
– emulsion: depending on thepercentage of oil more lubricatingor cooling effects
Apart from the type of coolant the form ofthe nozzle, the speed of the coolant etc.
also have a great impact on the result ofthe grinding operation.
Other parameters
Apart from the grinding wheel and thecoolant other parameters are importantas well: – fixture – axial and radial run-out – balancing – sharpening
An insuf ficient run-out in either axes canresult in vibrations and chattering markson the workpiece. This can be avoidedby a dressing cycle before the firstgrinding operation. Larger profile wheelsshould be dressed on the flange by us.This guarantees also good quality ofbalancing. These wheels should remainon the flange until the end of tool-life.
7/21/2019 Schleifscheiben Fur Die Mechanische Industrie
Grinding wheels have to be reconditionedbecause of loss of profile or dullness. In contrast to conventional grinding
wheels in diamond and CBN wheelsreconditioning usually takes two steps: After the truing procedure a dressing isnecessary.
Truing:
– Straight diamond and CBN grindingwheels can be trued with SiC wheels. In this operation the SiC wheel eitherhas own drive or it is slowed by acentrifugal brake.
– For straight CBN wheels with eitherresin or vitrified bond multipoint
dressers may be used (stationarydressing tools). Afterwards a dressingprocess is required. Rotary dressersor small cup wheels can be used asan alternative. Vitrified wheels need nodressing afterwards.
– Using a mild steel either as a blockor a roll is an easy form of truing anddressing straight wheels. The grindingforces make dull grit pull out of thebond (truing) whilst the long steel chipsset the bond back (dressing).
– With crushing profiles can be truedinto the grinding wheel. At low relativespeeds a profiled roll of tungstencarbide or HSS-steel is pressed intothe wheel. Usually the speed of thegrinding wheels is around 1 m/s.
7/21/2019 Schleifscheiben Fur Die Mechanische Industrie
Dressing:
The truing process creates an even,
nearly closed surface topography of thewheel. Therefore it is necessary to getroom for the coolant and the chipflow. This is called dressing.
– An Al2O3 stick is moved along the rim. Thus the bond is set back leaving amicrogeometry as desired.
– With jet sharpening abrasive grit(aluminiumoxide or quartz) is shotagainst the surface of the grindingwheel at pressures of approximately100 bar. The bond is worn out leavingthe diamond or CBN grit standing outas cutting edges.
Electrolytic, electrochemical andelectrodischarge methods are beingdiscussed for metal bonded wheels.

Deep feed Grinding
There is no clear-cut demarcationbetween deep feed grinding andreciprocating grinding. Generallyspeaking in reciprocating grinding thematerial is removed in a number ofpasses with high feed rates and lowdepths of cut. In deep feed grinding onthe other hand the depth of cut is highwhilst there are only few passes. As arule of thumb deep feed grinding starts ata minimum feed of ⅓ of the grit size. At deep feed grinding the chips are longand thin. This means that the surfacefinish is better and the wheel wear is
smaller. Due to the fact that the single gritparticle is held in the bond for a longertime the average grit particle is duller. This increases both grinding forces andtemperature so that adequate cooling isa must. At the same time the machinerequirements (stability, guideways withlow friction, rigidity of the spindle) fordeep feed grinding are stronger than inreciprocating grinding.

Man spricht dannvon HEDG-Schleifen (High-Ef ficient-Deep-Grinding).
Scheibenverschleiß wesentlich zuneh-men.
Up grinding and
down grinding
In down grinding wheel rotation and thefeed move into the same direction, whilstin up grinding the movements point inopposite directions. Single point testsindicate that the forces in down grindingare lower. This would mean that theG-ratio should be better in down grinding.
It is also very important that the coolantsupply of the contact zone is better at
down grinding.
High speed grinding
Today, the term high speed grinding isgenerally used for cutting speeds from 80to 250 m/s.
High speed grinding is mainly used forthe following applications:
– OD-grinding of cam-, crank- andtransmissionshafts
– chipbreaking and traverse grinding atfull infeed
High speed grinding brings advantagesespecially in combination with high stockremoval rates. It is than called HEDG-grinding (high ef ficient deep grinding). This process extremely reducesmachining time with no significantincrease of grinding forces or wear. Likeat deep grinding, a high stability of allmachine components and a very good
coolant supply are indispensable.

Maximum Speeds
Due to greater strength of diamond and
CBN wheels in comparison to conven-tional wheels the German GrindingWheel Committee has released a draft inwhich the maximum speeds for grindingwheels without special permission havebeen put down. The following table givesthe maximum speeds for wheels with theexception of cutting-off wheels.
For wheels that work at higher speedsthe German Grinding Wheel Committeereleases a permission after successfultesting.
For special high speed grinding wheelswith metal body and a diameter ofup to 400 mm we have a certificatefor cutting speeds up to 160 m/s. Forapplications with higher cutting speedsplease contact us.
