SCENERYCLINICINSTRUCTIONS
WELCOMEThe Woodland Scenics® Scenery Clinic teaches modelers to
color rocks, make trees and add natural looking landscape. Hold a
Clinic with one instructor and up to six modelers or present an
in-store modeling demonstration. The Scenery Clinic step-by-step
instructions walk you through a 6-person Clinic. Each Scenery
Clinic includes enough materials to make six fully landscaped
Scenery Dioramas.
LOOK FOR SalesTip! The SalesTips! are designed to help you sell
Woodland Scenics products with useful and interesting information
about the materials used during the Scenery Clinic. We also feature
other popular, commonly stocked Woodland Scenics products that
could be added to the Scenery Clinic modeling project. If you do
not stock a suggested product, call Woodland Scenics Sales and
Customer Service Department and place an order for delivery to your
store.
DVD BONUS To assist you in hosting your very own Scenery Clinic,
we have included a step-by-step instructional DVD. The DVD walks
you through all aspects of the Scenery Clinic, from introducing the
scenery products, to setting up and leading a Clinic or presenting
a demonstration in your store.
PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS To help you promote your Scenery Clinic,
we have included 2 two-sided posters and 24 handouts. The brightly

START OF SCENERY CLINIC: INTRODUCTION The Scenery Dioramas used
during the Scenery Clinic were created with the Woodland Scenics
Terrain System Shaper Sheet. Shaper Sheet is a unique modelling
material that is strong, pliable and holds its form without
understructure. Shaper Sheet can be shaped and reshaped to create
any level of terrain detail. The white fiber mesh mechanically
bonds with Shaper Sheet Plaster to lock contours in place and
create a durable terrain shell.
To construct the Scenery Diorama (terrain base), we started with
a sheet of Shaper Sheet cut to size. The Shaper Sheet was bent to
form the diorama’s shape then coated with Shaper Sheet Plaster.
Once dry, the Shaper Sheet Plaster locks the shape in place to
create a hard terrain shell. A realistic rock outcropping was
created with Lightweight Hydrocal* and a Rock Mold.*Hydrocal is a
product of US Gypsum
EXPLAIN SCENERY DIORAMA CONSTRUCTION TO MODELERS SHAPER
SHEET
• The soft, white side of the Shaper Sheet is called the “fiber
mesh.” The shiny bottom is called the “shaper foil.” Landscaping
materials will be applied to the fiber mesh.
• Cut the Shaper Sheet to size with scissors. Cut the piece a
little larger than what is expected to be used. Excess can be cut
away after the desired shape is formed.
• Form the terrain contours by scrunching, bending and shaping
the Shaper Sheet as desired.
SHAPER SHEET PLASTER• Mix Shaper Sheet Plaster
with water, following package instructions.
• Mist the fiber mesh side of the Shaper Sheet with water. Then,
pour or brush on an even continuous layer of Shaper Sheet Plaster
onto the wet Shaper Sheet.
• Insert optional Tree Armature base into wet plaster where
desired.

ROCK CASTINGS• Lightweight Hydrocal is ideal for making
rock castings for its short cure time and light cure weight.
Shaper Sheet Plaster can also be used.
• Prepare Lightweight Hydrocal according to package
instructions.
• Slowly pour prepared Lightweight Hydrocal into Rock Mold, and
let set 30-40 minutes.
ATTACH ROCKS TO TERRAIN• Cast rocks can be attached to Shaper

SCENERY STEPS STEP 1 - Paint RocksMODELERS
A painting technique called “leopard spotting” will be used to
paint the rocks. Let the pigments run naturally over the
rocks.NOTE: As the pigments may have separated, stir colors with
the Stir Stick before applying to rock. Wipe the stick between
colors.
• Using the Foam Brush, randomly dab Yellow Ocher over 1/3 of
each rock. Rinse Foam Brush in water and dry.
• Randomly dab Burnt Umber over a different 1/3 of each rock.
Rinse and dry Foam Brush.
• Brush and dab Black over the entire rock. Repeat for second
rock. Black pulls the colors together.
• Rinse and dry Foam Brush.
STEP 3 - Pass around Turfs, Bushes and
Clump-FoliageINSTRUCTOR
NOTE: To avoid product confusion for your Modelers, pass out the
scenery materials in order of use. • Cut open scenery material
bags. • Have Modelers pass around the scenery materials in the
following order and amount:
1st: Green Blend Blended Turf (fill Plastic Cup approx.
1/2”)2nd: Medium Green Bushes (fill Plastic Cup approx. 1/2”)3rd:
Medium Green Course Turf (fill Plastic Cup approx. 3/8”)4th: Medium
Green Clump-Foliage (fill Plastic Cup approx. 3/4 full)5th: Yellow
Grass Fine Turf (barely cover bottom of Cup)
STEP 2 - Paint Scenery DioramaMODELERS
• Using the Foam Brush, paint entire diorama, front and back (do
NOT paint rocks) with Earth Undercoat.
• Make sure to cover all white areas.• Rinse Foam Brush and set
aside. • Empty pigments cups and rinse water in sink
or plastic bucket. • Wipe Cups clean and thoroughly dry with
paper towels. NOTE: Cups will be used for landscaping materials
(Scenery Step 3).
SalesTip! Earth Colors Liquid Pigments are available in a wide
variety of earth tones. As rocks contain particular colors in
different parts of the world, you can experiment with the pigments
to achieve a desired look. Earth Colors Liquid Pigment can be used
to color Tunnel Portals, Retaining Walls and Culverts. The Earth
Color Kit provides 0.676 fl oz of each highly-concentrated Earth
Colors Liquid Pigment (White, Concrete, Stone Gray, Black, Raw
Umber, Burnt Umber and Yellow Ocher).
-
SalesTip! Due to weather conditions, such as cycles of freezing
and thawing or long periods of wind and rain, erosion naturally
occurs, creating rock debris or Talus. Talus can be seen in such
places as the base of mountains and rock cuts. Talus is available
in wide variety of colors and grades to compliment various rock
colorings and types. Apply Scenic Glue where you would like rock
debris, press Talus into glue and spray with Scenic Cement. Then,
sprinkle a very light dusting of Earth Fine Turf over Talus and
spray with Scenic Cement to seal.
SalesTip! To keep your landscape from having a “mowed lawn”
look, Coarse Turfs were designed to give your terrain dimension and
texture. A realistic layout rises and falls with plants of various
sizes and colors.Sprinkle darker colors of Coarse Turf in patches
where plants and weeds would grow, make paths, spread around rocks
and on areas where moisture would settle.Sprinkle lighter colors of
Coarse Turfs to show drier, well-drained areas.
SalesTip! For a deep green landscape, try painting your terrain
base with Green Undercoat. Blended Turfs and Fine Turfs were
formulated to color coordinate with the Undercoat pigments (Earth
Undercoat and Green Undercoat).Undercoat pigments ensure that a
white plaster base does not show through ground cover. Undercoat
pigments were designed to stain the terrain, emphasizing contours
that randomly occur in nature.
STEP 4 - Apply Ground CoverMODELERS
• Shake Spray Bottle with Scenic Cement.• Spray entire front of
diorama (avoiding rock)
with Scenic Cement.• Attach Sifter Lid to Plastic Cup
containing
Green Blend Blended Turf.• Heavily sift Turf over entire
terrain. • Lightly spray with Scenic Cement to seal.
STEP 5 - Apply BushesMODELERS
• Apply Scenic Glue where you would like bushes. Bushes look
natural when placed in groups.
• Press bunches of Medium Green Bushes into glue.
• Save a small amount of Bushes to place around base of Tree
(Scenery Step 11).
Step 6 - Sprinkle Medium Green Coarse TurfMODELERS
• Spray front of diorama (avoiding rock) with Scenic Cement.•
Sprinkle Medium Green Coarse Turf randomly over terrain.

Step 7 - Model Tree ArmatureMODELERS
• Remove temporary base from Tree Armature. • Twist and bend
Tree Armatures into realistic,
three-dimensional tree shape. • Set Armature and base aside.
NOTE: This Armature is for demonstration purposes only. The
Instructor-prepared Armatures will be used to make the tree
(Scenery Step 9).
Step 8 - Pass out prepared Tree ArmaturesINSTRUCTOR
• Pass out one (1) prepared Tree Armature to each modeler.
• Explain to your Modelers that Hob-e-Tac is a contact adhesive,
used to secure Foliage to the Tree Armature.
• It should be liberally brushed on both sides of all branches,
avoiding areas where foliage does not naturally grow.
• As it must dry until clear and tacky, (drying times vary), the
Tree Armatures were prepared before the start of the Clinic.
Step 9 - Make TreeMODELERS
• Dip Tree Armature into Plastic Cup with Clump-Foliage. Crumble
larger clumps into smaller pieces, if necessary.
• Lightly pick off excess Foliage.• Continue until branches are
covered, front
and back.• Lightly pinch clumps of Clump-Foliage onto
branches of Tree Armature.• Gently set Armature aside.
SalesTip! Show the change of season with Fall Mix colors of
Clump-Foliage and Coarse Turf.
-
SalesTip! Field Grass is a great product for modeling tall
grasses, field grass and weeds. It is available in four realistic
colors: Medium Green, Light Green, Harvest Gold and Natural
Straw.Clumps of Harvest Gold Field Grass with a subtle blending of
Light Green are a great way to model seasonal changes on a
layout.Remove a pinch of Field Grass, roll between fingers to
create uneven, natural look. Cut to preferred length, dip cut end
in Scenic Glue and place on layout. Repeat until desired look has
been achieved.
Step 10 – Prepare to Plant TreeINSTRUCTOR
• Have each Modeler use a Foam Nail, hobby knife or toothpick to
clear plaster residue from the hole in the Tree Armature base on
the diorama.
Step 11 - Plant TreeMODELERS
• Place a drop of Scenic Glue over Tree Armature base hole.
• Place Armature base pin (“root”) in hole.
• Press in place, and hold a few seconds until set.
• Using Scenic Glue, glue extra Bushes (or leftover
Clump-Foliage) around base of tree. This will help blend the Tree
into the landscape.
Step 12 - Sprinkle Yellow Grass Fine TurfMODELERS
• Sprinkle a pinch of Yellow Grass Fine Turf as a light dusting
over entire Diorama.
SalesTip! To enhance the look of a drying terrain, try adding
Earth or Burnt Grass Fine Turf.
