As you go through the newsletter we hope you are pleased with the new graphic design, digital format, and a number of new articles. Our desire is to deliver to the reader a newsletter that is filled with content that is familiar and pertinent to community life. As I reported to residents at the October 4 th Resident Council meeting, the long awaited permit for the LifeCenter was issued by the City of Santa Barbara Building Department. With the permit in hand, the process of constructing the new two-story building begins in the month of November with the demolition of the Maintenance Garage. Once the three week demolition and removal process is complete, we will gather for a Ground Breaking Ceremony. Details about the ceremony will be conveyed to residents when they become available. So, for all the sidewalk superintendents, let’s get ready to observe the approximately 14 month construction of the new LifeCenter. I look forward to us cutting the ribbon to our new building. SAM NEWSNew Resident: Signy JohnsonBy Margaret MaySigny Johnson is a new resident in Northview-179.   In Norwegian, Signy means “new blessing”. She was the fourth child of her family.

Her brother, Phil Fredrickson, who lives in Eastview, was the oldest. Other siblings live in Monterey and in Michigan. Her parents were both immigrants from Norway and met each other in Detroit. Her dad died when she was two years old which left her mother alone with four children to raise. When Signy was eleven, they moved to Pasadena. As Signy told me, it was the second time her mother had moved to a place she'd never visited or seen.   But she was a brave woman. Signy graduated from high school, attended Pasadena City College and graduated in Psychology from Hayward State. She worked with the Department of Human Resources in the California Employment Development Department helping welfare recipients get ready for jobs. In 1985, she got her Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Counseling from Azusa Pacific and worked with drug addicts and alcoholics in their hopes for recovery.Signy has two children. Her son is studying at Berkeley, working on his PhD in Russian Literature. Her daughter and husband are both missionaries in Bolivia. He teaches theology and she keeps books and cares for their two children, a girl, Sofia, and a boy, Andres. Signy was present for Sofia’s birth in Buenos Aries and went to La Paz for the birth of Andres.Signy first came to The Samarkand with Carol Luce. She visited her brother, Phil, saw how lovely the campus was. She said she “felt God was preparing me for a move”. Soon after that, the owner of her apartment gave her notice that she was to leave and she was ready to move.Signy has many interests and will be a great addition to The Samarkand. She attended the Menlo Park Presbyterian Church where she was a deacon and led Bible study. She loves to read, go to movies, she is already playing bridge and is in a water color class. She has done needlepoint and knitting. She says, “I thank God and Jesus Christ for being the Lord of my life.”  We are so glad you chose to come to The Samarkand, Signy!

New Resident: Hanna ForakerBy Lois Okerstrom

I had first met Hanna “on the road” while coming up from Oak Park as she was walking her beloved wire-haired dachshund dog, “Miss Annie”, now 14 years old. It was then that I knew I was in for an interesting conversation. Hanna and Miss Annie moved to The Samarkand in June of this year, but it was not until early September that she was able to move into her renovated apartment in Southview 4007. She calls her spot there which looks out on a forested area on one side and a small area suitable for gardening on the other side, as “a little bit of heaven.” She says that living at The Samarkand is a privilege and she is very grateful to be here.

It is not surprising that she chose The Samarkand, for she is the third generation in her family to call The Samarkand home. Dr. Harrison Ray Anderson, a cousin of her mother-in-law, who had been

pastor of the largest Presbyterian Church in Chicago, died while living in Brandel Hall in 1979 (1893 - 1979). Elizabeth Anderson Foraker lived here from 1989 - 1992. Hanna was born in Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany a place of great beauty. She moved to San Francisco in 1959. She is self-educated with interests in the arts. Hanna enjoys classical music, particularly chamber and bel canto. She is interested in architecture, interior design, textiles, birding and gardening. Hanna met her husband, William Anderson Foraker, called “Andy,” in 1977 when Andy was in law practice in Chico, California. Andy rejoined Exxon (formerly Humble Oil & Refining) in 1982. Exxon moved the Forakers to Midland, Texas (a city Hanna calls “the capital of tumbleweeds,”) to Oklahoma City, to Denver, and back to Midland until retirement in 1993. They moved to Semiahmoo Resort in Blaine, Washington in 2006. Andy died there on September 8, 2011. They had 32 years of what Hanna calls a “perfect marriage.” Andy had three boys who live in Northern California - Mountain View, Davis and San Francisco. Hanna has a

daughter in Denver and a son in Santa Fe, NM.

Although we may be late with our welcome in print, nonetheless we want to say, “A hearty welcome, Hanna! We are very glad you are here and carrying out your family’s tradition.”

We Welcome New Residents

Bob and Anne Weber from Santa Barbara moved into Magnolia East-611 on September 28th. Their phone number is 696-6941 and their campus host is Joan Hotop.

On-Campus Moves We have had several new additions to our roster of residents in Assisted Living recently.   In mid-September, Patricia Clancy moved into Heritage Court 73.   Pat practiced law in Santa Barbara for many years.   Recent on-campus moves to Brandel Hall have been Olivia and Bill Allaway to #2103 and Jack Lindsay to #2205.

SAM NEWSFrom the Health Care Administrator's DeskBy Dwayne Gabrielson Some of you have heard this quote by Helen Keller. You will remember she was blind, and you would think that might limit how she lived her life. This is the quote: “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something; I will not refuse to do something I can do.” We know many of you come and help as part of the Amazing Grays and for that we give thanks every day. I know many of you may have limitations, too, but what more could you do? Do any of you have friends that live in the Smith Health Center? How much do you think they would appreciate your visit? There is nothing more pleasing than to have someone you know come and personally visit with you. There is nothing more rewarding than to give of yourself to others. The scripture says, “No one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive 100 times as much in the present age.” (Mark 10: 29, 30) So how much are you willing to give to make sure our residents get the best visitors in any nursing facility in the City of Santa Barbara? Think about what you can do and we look forward to seeing you at Smith.

Thank YouDear Friends at The Samarkand,Before returning to Florida, we wanted to thank you all, residents and staff, for the warm welcome you have extended to us "sunbirds."  Getting to know The Samarkand community has been an enjoyable experience and we hope to see you all again next year.Sincerely, Barbara and Derek Hanley

Gratitudeby Chaplain Sherry Peterson

As we enter a new season and new newsletter format, I offer a prayer that has been meaningful to me. “The risen, living Christ calls me by my name;Comes to the loneliness within me;Heals that which is wounded in me;Comforts that which grieves in me;Seeks for that which is lost within me;Releases me from that which has dominion over me;Cleanses me of that which does not belong to me;Renews that which feels drained within me;Awakens that which is asleep in me;Names that which is formless within me;Empowers that which is newborn within me;Consecrates and guides that which is strong within me;Restores me to this world which needs me;Reaches out in endless love to others through me.” ~ Flora Slosson Wuellner, from Prayer, Fear, and our Powers,Upper Room Books, 1989. All that I am, all that I shall be, and all that I cannot yet even imagine, I offer to You. Fill me with your goodness and mercy and light, so that wherever I tread, You are seen. In this season of Gratitude and Thanksgiving, meet us along the way. In the name of Jesus,  Amen.

Couldn’t Do Without...

Cathy Moreno By Margaret May Cathy Moreno is a server and shift supervisor in the Oaks Dining Room.   She has been with us for two years, previously having worked at Vista del Monte.  She has received her Servesafe certificate, a study to improve motivation skills, train others and adapt to various learning patterns.  She and Zack are the two lead servers who manage the staff during mealtimes.

Cathy's parents are from Mexico: her father from Guadalajara and mother from Mexico City.  She was born here.  She and her younger brother live with them in Carpinteria.   She is a business and finance major at SBCC and plans to go to UCSB and eventually get a CPA.  She is “good in math and taking a full load of classes.”

Recently there was an emergency in the dining room when a server cut herself on a piece of broken glass.   Cathy was very careful and thorough in filing the necessary reports, taking her to ER for necessary stitches and taking her home.  Both Zack and George Piperis (it was his day off) came to the hospital to support Cathy and the injured girl.

Cathy is very ambitious, likes discussing ideas and opinions and someday would like to get a job “in a tall building in a big city.”

Dining Services Updateby Phil Levere, Director of Dining Services

The Dining Services Department extends a warm welcome to our New Executive Chef, Jeff Guettler, who joined us in late August.  Jeff's most recent experience was as Executive Chef of Dining Services at Sacramento State University.  We look forward to Jeff's efforts in making continuous improvement in our dining program across the campus and in helping to plan for the new LifeCenter dining venue.

There is also exciting news in the Healthcare segment of Dining Services.  We have recently upgraded several pieces of equipment, providing the kitchen staff there with a new and reliable stove-top and grill, as well as a state-of-the-art oven.   The majority of the food prepared for residents throughout Brandel Hall, Heritage Court, and the Smith Health Center are now being prepared in the kitchen underneath the Smith Health Center.

Residents can expect to see some new faces in The Oaks Dining Room as the efforts to get our service team back up to its full staffing level is underway.  Hats off to those who have worked many extra shifts, many of them short-handed, during this challenging period of time.

Finally, congratulations go out to Monica Palomo, Zac Gonzalez, and Cathy Moreno for recently receiving their certificate in Food Safety Training.   Each of them passed a comprehensive exam after taking a nationally recognized 8-hour course in Food Safety.  They join many others on the Dining Service team who have also received this training.

The Christmas Fund Drive for EmployeesOn Thursday, November 1st the Christmas Fund Drive will be underway. The Fund Drive gives residents a tangible opportunity to express their appreciation for all that employees do for them. The Drive will culminate with a gala Christmas Open House December 6th when each Samarkand employee will receive a share of the Fund. On November 1st residents will receive a letter with details about the Fund Drive. Watch for it! - The Employee Appreciation Committee

The TRAGER® Approach with Ruth

Alpert

The TRAGER® Approach is a four week enjoyable workshop that teaches innovative relaxing techniques. This self care movement technique is a gentle, effortless way to end stress-related tension and ease aches, pains and stiffness. Appropriate for any body. The following is a quote by its founder, Dr. Milton Trager, "These are mentally directed movements that suggest to the mind feelings of lightness, freedom, openness, and grace resulting in an ageless body!"

Four Mondays: Nov. 5, 12, 19 and 26. 1:30-2:20 p.m. in the MR.

Camerata Pacifica

Camerata Pacifica will be performing a concert in the Mountain Room on Monday, Nov. 5 at 3:00 p.m. You won’t want to miss it!

Featured Artists in the Fireside Room

Two Samarkand residents; Anne Allen, who is showcasing her water color botanical paintings, and Marian Blake’s pencil drawings of young children, will continue be on exhibit through the month November.

Chaplain’s Fall Lecture Series

“What's Not to Like? Devotional Poetry Past and Present” Speaker: Dr. Paul Willis, Santa Barbara Poet Laureate

November 15 & 16, 2012 at 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Mountain Room. "Can Poetry Matter?"  This was the title of a much discussed essay by former National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Dana Gioia, published in the  Atlantic   some

twenty years ago.  One would think that poetry might disappear in our media-soaked age, but it not only persists, it flourishes, finding numerous and ingenious ways to surprise and delight us, even and especially on our journeys of faith. These sessions will be aimed at those for whom poetry might seem distant or intimidating, yet would like to see how poetry can nourish belief.

Operation Christmas Child UpdateBy Bess DeWitt The plan for packing our shoeboxes is now complete!  Paul Peterson has graciously allowed us the use of an empty apartment again this year.  Pam Bigelow has selected unit C-897 that is street level and should be convenient for everyone.  PLEASE COME HELP PACK THE CHRISTMAS BOXES Where:       Unit C-897When: Thursday 11/15         10 – 12 noon                Friday 11/16               10 – 12 noon Did you know?  The concept of Operation Christmas Child began in October of 1990 when a Welsh couple was watching a broadcast about Romanian orphanages. They knew they could not stop the wars, but they could offer something – the gift of love. Together, they filled a convoy of nine trucks with medical supplies, food, clothing and Christmas gifts for children, and headed into Romania, which had recently been devastated by war. This was the beginning of the world’s largest children’s Christmas program. In 1993, Franklin Graham, International President of Samaritan’s Purse, adopted Operation Christmas Child. Please call Bess if you have a question - 898-7972.
