Health care was given to 700 paents among which, charity was provided to 290 paents, external therapy to 68 paents and 43 people had astrological readings. Charity amounng to Rs. 17885.43/- was provided to the people during the camp. This outreach program has created awareness on Tibetan medicine & astrology amongst the tourist and people who assembled for the teachings from various countries and different walks of life. MEN-TSEE-KHANG OUTREACH PROGRAM

The outreach program initiated by Men-Tsee-Khang from November, 2012 was to promote

and provide Tibetan traditional system of healing, Sowa Rigpa and astrological service to the community and tourists coming to Dharamsala.

SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TIBETAN

MEDICINE

The Second International Conference on Tibetan Medicine was held from 27-29 October, 2012 at Dharamsala for three days. The conference was organized by Central Council

of Tibetan Medicine (CCTM) in collaboration with Men-Tsee-Khang (TMAI) Dharamsala; Dept. of Sowa Rigpa, Central University of Tibetan Studies (CUTS) Sarnath, Varanasi and Chagpori Tibetan Medical Institute (CTMI) Darjeeling. The first International Conference was held at Samye in the year 728 A.D., during the 37th King of Tibet, Trisong Deutsen.

Around 300 Tibetan medical professionals and health experts representing different medical systems from around the world including India, US, Israel, China, Taiwan, Nepal, Bhutan, Mongolia, Japan, Swiss, Nederland, Russia, Hungary, Spain, Latvia, Austria, Germany, England, Italy and France took part in the

conference.

T w e n t y eight guest speakers from India, Nepal, M o n g o l i a , USA, Israel, Swiss and N e d e r l a n d and 21 paper p r e s e n t e r s were invited during the

conference. Seven doctors as guest speakers and 13 doctors as paper p r e s e n t e r s participated from Men-Tsee-Khang during the

conference.

The speakers spoke on d i f f e r e n t topics ranging from History and basic principles of Sowa Rigpa to management of different

diseases, medicinal herbs and plants, research methodology, pharmacology, comparative study on different subjects, salient features of different medical systems, clinical research, ethics of physician, practical experience on pulse and urine analysis, practical application on various external therapies, research reports and state of Tibetan medicines around the world.

On the last day of the International Conference Men-Tsee-Khang held a press conference regarding the use of Tsothel (purified mercury) in Tibetan medicine which has been used for centuries and the efficacy of this compound is irrevocable.

The key speakers Dr. Sarah Sallon director, The Louis L. Borick

Natural Medicine Research Center Hadassah, Israel and Dr. Thirunarayan, secretary of Centre for Traditional Medicines & Research, Chennai were requested to address on the topic what they have shared in the three days conference.

Dr. Sarah Sallon who has been doing research work since 1994 on the use of detoxified mercury

said “We have done a couple of studies now and I think that from these studies and information we got so far, the people we have looked at have been taking it for years, and have remarkably little absent side effects which is quite in a way unexpected when you think of how much mercury they are taking and how long they have taken it for”. She said that it will be exciting if the research work is published because if it is not published then we will not know it ever happened.

Dr. Thirunarayan on the occasion said that “Traditional medicines should be allowed to continue the mercurial preparation of proper detoxification and is essential for the well being of the human community”.

COMPLETION OF MEDICAL & ASTROLOGY COURSES 2012

The 16th Batch Medical & 8th Batch Astrology students completed their final written and oral examination from 9 October - 1 December, 2012.

The duration of the course is five years plus one year internship in both the streams and the session for the above batches started from March 2008. There were 29 medical and 9 astrology students enrolled in the beginning but only 25 medical and 5 astrology students appeared for the final exams in 2012.

The syllabus for the medical stream is the fundamental text on Tibetan medicine Gyueshi, Buddhist philosophy, grammar, science, practical applications and identifications of herbs and oral recitation. The astrology stream includes astronomy, elemental

astrology, practical astronomy and practical elemental astrology, grammar and Buddhist philosophy.

The College invites resource persons to share knowledge on different alternative healing such as Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy, Siddha, Chinese and Korean system of health care

and allopathic system as well. Workshops and seminars are also organized by the College for the students.

The students have to finish the internship for one year from 2013 and will be graduates in their respective stream after its completion the following year.
