Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today Samuel hears the call of the Lord and responds, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” And the Lord was with him. St. Paul exhorts the Corinthians to shun immorality and sins of the flesh, reminding them that the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. In the gospel, John the Bap st points to Jesus, saying “Behold, the Lamb of God.” Jesus invites the disciples to follow him. Andrew goes to get his brother Peter, saying that they have found the Messiah.

1 Samuel 3:3b-10, 19 1 Corinthians 6:13c-15a, 17-20 John 1:35-42

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. This short period of “Ordinary Time” between the end of the Christmas season and the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday (on February 17th this year) is a me to catch our breath. Having celebrated with great joy all the feasts associated with the Christmas season and the birth of Jesus, we need to take me before we enter the peniten al season of Lent, which prepares us to celebrate his death.

The joy and gra tude we feel calls for a response on our part. Today’s scriptures help us to focus our priori es so that we can make an appropriate response by orien ng ourselves toward God. In the first reading, we hear God’s call to Samuel. He is sleeping quietly in the Temple when he hears a repeated calling of his name. Samuel thinks that it is the prophet Eli calling out for him; he is unaware that it is really the voice of God. Eli, realizing that God has something to say to the young man, tells him to respond, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” In the gospel, Jesus asks the disciples of John the Bap st what they are looking for, and invites them to follow him with the words, “Come, and you will see.” If we truly want to be disciples of Jesus, we must first follow the advice that Eli gave to Samuel. We need to listen a en vely and invite the Lord to speak to us. And then we need to act on the words we hear, obeying Jesus’ invita on to follow him.

This is not as easy as it may sound. In the busy world we live in, we o en do not take the me to listen for the Word of God. Going to mass on Sundays to hear the scriptures and to spend some me in prayer is a good start. The mass is an ac vity that takes us out of our daily rou nes and opens us to the grace of God. But the mass is pri-marily a corporate prayer, in communion with the rest of the assembled faithful. We also need me for quiet per-sonal prayer to hear what God is saying, par cularly to each one of us. God’s instruc on or guidance is usually spe-cific. It could be about a behavior we should change, an amends we need to make to someone. He o en calls us to posi ve ac on, promo ng a par cular goal in our work, parish or society. This could be something small, as in some community service ac vity, or something large, as in working for a social jus ce goal. It could even be more challenging as in a new direc on he wants us to take with our life.

Being alone with God can be scary because he doesn’t give us any “wiggle room”. We need to make a decision to listen or not. But there is no evasion as to what our response is. We know in our heart if we have said yes or if we have said no. And we know that we have to live with the consequences of our response. Because of the danger involved, most people choose not to listen. And, of course, none of us choose to listen all the me. But the goal is to keep trying and hopefully we get be er at it as we grow in our faith. Many good people try to get by simply by avoiding serious harm to others. This is not bad, but it is not our Chris an faith. Mere avoidance of mortal sin is not living the Chris an life.

Chris an faith is a posi ve rela onship with God that brings joy to the believer. It can be difficult but it can also be exhilara ng. The journey of faith is like a roller coaster ride. We won’t reap the benefits if we don’t put our trust in him. God took a great risk in being born in a manger. He invites us to risk our human comforts and security. He invites us to follow him, to come and see. If we take the risk, he will bring us greater peace and joy than we can possibly imagine.

The na on celebrates Mar n Luther King Day on Monday. Let us all pray for an end to racism, discrimina on and violence in our society. Let us also be honest with ourselves, ask how we have been uncharitable toward others due to their race, ethnicity or religion, and how we can change to be the people God has called us to be. Please read my ar cle on page four about the recent Violence at our na on’s Capitol Building.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Violence in our Na on

Violence at the Capitol: Regardless of one’s poli cs or beliefs, the violent a empt to prevent the Congress from following our due process of cer fying the elec on of the new President was totally contrary to Catholic moral principles and the teachings of Christ. We are called to be peacemakers. There is way too much violence in our na on, from the urban violent protests and destruc on this summer, the protests at several state capitals, armed protests at the na on’s Capitol Building, to the gun violence and killings in our neighborhoods. It must end and we must work together to make that happen.

Healing of the Na on: As a people we need to come together to work for the common good. Most people of good will decry the violence, the animosity and the divisiveness that seem to be almost the en rety of our public discourse.

We need the grace of God in our hearts and souls to cleanse us of these evils and repair the damage to our fallen human nature. No ma er how “right” we think our posi on is, when our response is anger, violence or the vilifi-ca on of our brothers and sisters with whom we disagree, we need to look at the sin in our own souls.

We must ac vely confront the evils in ourselves, stand up firmly and respec ully to those who espouse these vio-lent responses, par cularly our family and friends with whom we may have some influence, and hold our elected officials accountable to de-escalate the rhetoric and bring light instead of heat to these situa ons. Compromise is not “copping out” but a coming together with those with whom we disagree to work on solu ons that we all can live with. The common good does not mean that everyone must conform to how we think the world should be. Fr. Neil
