Third Sunday of Advent

As the people return from exile, Isaiah says that God has anointed him to bring glad tidings to the poor and announce a year of favor from the Lord. He brings a word of healing to the brokenhearted, liberty to the captives and release to those in prison. St. Paul writes to the Thessalonians that they must rejoice always in God. They are to pray without ceasing and in all circumstances give thanks to God. In the gospel, the religious leaders ask John the Baptist who he is. He tells them he is not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet. As in Mark’s gospel last Sunday, John echoes the proph-et Isaiah saying, “I am the voice of one crying out in the desert. Make straight the way of the Lord.” He proclaims, however, that the Christ is coming, “one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.” It is clear from today’s readings that God is with us and that it is through his actions that his people receive salvation.

The Third Sunday of Advent Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent, also known as Gaudete Sunday, the Latin word for “rejoice.” Re-joicing is the theme of all our readings today, indeed for the entire season of Advent. Today we light the rose colored candle on the Advent wreath as a sign of that rejoicing in the middle of our preparation for the coming of the Lord.

At the time of the reading from the prophet Isaiah, the people have returned to Israel from captivity in Babylon and are beginning to rebuild their community. However, the land is desolate, fields need to be cleared, orchards need to be planted, so it will be several more years before they can expect any prosperity. In addition, the Temple of King Solomon had been destroyed, and they had no place to worship. Since the Temple had taken forty-six years to build, they clearly had a daunting task ahead (in fact it wouldn't be rebuilt for another hundred and fifty years). So, in spite of their joy at their freedom from captivity and living once again in their own homeland, the harsh realities of their return did not give them much cause for joy.

Isaiah brings them good news. He announces “a year of favor from the Lord, a day of vindication by our God.” The compassion of God is the theme of Isaiah’s anointing as the herald of good news. He proclaims that the broken-hearted will be healed, captives will be liberated and the poor will receive glad tidings. Isaiah reminds the Israelites that God brings joy to the soul because it is the Lord himself who will restore the land, bringing them justice and salvation.

This is a good reminder for us. Even amid the economic and political turmoil, war, violence and uncertainty, God will be with us to bring justice and salvation. We can take courage from these promises given to us through the prophet Isaiah, and imitate the Apostle Paul, who tells us to rejoice always, and in all circumstances give thanks.

St. Paul reminds us that the reason for hope and rejoicing is that the one who is coming, our Lord Jesus Christ, will himself accomplish our salvation. This is the good news of the gospel. Today we hear St. John the Evangelist’s ver-sion of last week’s gospel. We hear again John the Baptist’s proclamation that the Messiah is coming. We take com-fort and rejoice that the Lord himself will come among us, fulfilling the prophecy that the time of the Lord’s favor is at hand. It is indeed comforting to know that we do not need to rely on our own power or resources because God himself has promised to deliver us.

Thank you to Kathy Ernst, Trina Eifert and all the volunteers for the wonderful Holiday Christmas Party celebra-tion.. The entertainment, the food, and the company provided a very fun evening. Though not a fundraiser, we did raise $750 for Scholarships for Catechist training programs. Thanks also to the Parents’ Association for hosting the Pancake Breakfast/Visit with Santa last Sunday. It was a real treat for all the kids.

Last Saturday we had a celebration of rejoicing as fifty-five of our children in the School and Religious Education programs received the Sacrament of First Reconciliation. Many of the parents and relatives also took advantage of this opportunity to celebrate this sacrament. Blessings to the teachers and catechists who share our faith with the children.

Our parish Advent Reconciliation Service will be held this Tuesday, December 19 at 7 p.m. All are invited to cele-brate this sacrament of healing in preparation for the birth of our Savior.

The school Christmas Pageant will be held this Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend.

Today we celebrate the Children’s Liturgy of the Word at the 10:00 a.m. mass. There will also be a second collec-tion for our Christmas Flowers at all the masses today. Next Sunday is both the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve. We will have our normal mass schedule for Saturday evening/Sunday morning. Sunday evening we will celebrate our Christmas Eve masses at 4:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. There will not be a 5:30 p.m. mass next Sunday. Please see page four for the full mass schedule.

Have a great week and a Blessed Advent. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
