Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the first reading Joshua gathers the Israelites at Shechem to renew the Covenant. He calls the people to make a deci-sion to serve either the God of their fathers or the local gods, proclaiming, “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” The Israelites, recalling the miracles of the God who led them out of Egypt and into the Promised Land, fer-vently declare that they will serve the Lord. St. Paul reminds the Ephesians of the mutual love and self-giving that hus-bands and wives should have for one another. The two become one in marriage, just as Christ is united to the Church. In the gospel, many of the disciples and followers of Jesus cannot accept his proclamation that he is the living bread from heaven. They say, “this saying is hard, who can accept it?”, and return to their former way of life. But Peter re-sponds, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we conclude Jesus’ Bread of Life discourse from John’s gospel. The scriptures ask us to make a decision about our faith. Whom shall we believe? Whom shall we serve? Our decision is not simply a passing statement of a creed, but a commitment to live our faith. The question of belief is a call to profess a vision of life. The question of whom we shall serve is a call to act on the values we profess.

In the Old Testament we hear Joshua’s call to the people to make the decision of whom they shall serve. Having brought them safely into the land of Canaan and having settled in the land occupied by pagan tribes, Joshua sum-mons them all to a nationwide “Town Hall Meeting”. He asks the people to make the decision to either adopt the ways of the pagans in their midst or to remain faithful to the God of their fathers. Joshua proclaims that he will serve the Lord. The people ratify the Covenant by proclaiming that they, too, will serve the Lord.

Jesus gives his followers the same choice. He has declared that he is the living bread come down from heaven, that his flesh is true food and his blood, true drink that gives eternal life. In today’s gospel we hear that many of the peo-ple are troubled by his words. It is a hard saying; who can accept it? Jesus responds to them quite clearly, “it is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail”. The choice is to follow the ways of God or to seek after the val-ues of the world. Unlike the Israelites in the first reading, many of his disciples cannot accept Jesus’ teaching. They turn away and return to their former way of life.

Jesus then asks the twelve if they, too, wish to leave. Peter makes a confession of faith: “To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” Although full understanding will not dawn on him until after the resurrection, Peter makes the leap of faith, linking the Word of God in the Covenant to the Word of God made flesh in Jesus. Jesus promises to remain with us forever. He is truly present in the body and blood we share (true food for eternal life). He is the Living Word of God. The Eucharist and the Scriptures are the source of our salvation and the Covenant that God has made with his people.

We must each make the decision (every day) whether or not we will trust in the promise of God by turning from the self-serving values of the world and choose to serve the Lord, in self-giving love for others.

Most of our summer construction projects have been completed: the new storm drainage system for the parking lots, the plastering and repainting of the convent chapel and kitchen, the repair of the concrete by the school lunch-room fire exits; as well as our normal summer repairs, painting and cleaning. There have been some delays in get-ting the new lighting panel for the church but it should be delivered and installed next week. We should have the financial details next week.

The parish staff had a staff retreat day this past Monday facilitated by Terry Nelson Johnson. It was a good oppor-tunity to get to know our new staff members, to do some team building and to focus on our goals for the upcoming year. Terry also facilitated a retreat day for the school teachers last Tuesday as they prepare for the new school year.

School begins tomorrow. I want to welcome all our new faculty, students and parents. I celebrated mass with our school faculty and staff this past Tuesday. We also held a reception for new school families to introduce them to us and to welcome them to our parish. The School Board will meet tomorrow (Monday) at 7 p.m. Pre-school begins on Wednesday morning. The School Mass to begin the new year will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 26 at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome. We are beginning an exciting new year with nearly 350 children registered in our school and pre-school programs. Please welcome our new families and be extra careful in the parking lots.

The RCIA Inquiry Nights for those interested in joining the Catholic Church (or exploring the possibility thereof) will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday at 7 p.m. Please call Deacon Bill at the rectory for more information.

The Parish Picnic will be held next Sunday, August 30, beginning with mass at noon in Dunham Park. There will not be a noon mass in the church. Please see page six for more details.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Looking for Leaders to run Children’s Liturgy of the Word

St. Robert’s is planning on starting a Children’s Liturgy of the Word beginning Fall 2015.

At the 10:00 mass, children will be invited to come forward to attend Children’s Liturgy of the Word. This ministry serves children, by proclaiming God’s word on a level that they understand, and by reflecting on its meaning in their lives. It will most likely be held in Kernaghan Hall. We are looking for a few adults to create a team. No formal training is needed but there will be some basic instruction and of course you will need Virtus Training. SRB will be glad to help with those.

For more information, contact Trina Eifert 773-286-6240 or [email protected].

HELLO ST. ROBERT BELLARMINE PARISH! I am MaryEllen Casselman your new Coordinator of Religious Education / Sacrament Preparation for children in the parish. I have been on campus since early July and have met many wonderful people of the parish and staff. Just a bit of information about me, this is my 20th year in religious education! I am a certified catechist and catechetical leader for the Archdiocese of Chicago.

My previous role was at St. Giles Parish in Oak Park, which is also my home parish. I am a wife, mother of three, and care– giver for my elderly mother who lives with us. So like many of you I wear many hats throughout my day.

I have learned over the years that HANDING on the FAITH to our children takes a PARISH! ♦ Parents, who are the first teachers of the faith for their children, need the support, guidance and

encouragement of their parish to be successful at handing on the faith. I experienced this first hand as a parent myself!

♦ In addition children flourish when they have mentors willing to share their own journey and walk with the children as they themselves grow in faith. This too I have seen with my older children.

♦ The parish religious education provide systematic presentations of our Catholic doctrine and Tra-ditions that is age-appropriate.

♦ Most importantly the parish offers everyone the invitation to know Jesus Christ personally through our worship and offering many varied opportunities to put our faith into action through service to/for others.

♦ TOGETHER these three components offer the most effective way to hand on our faith to the next generation of Catholics.

One of the biggest ways you can help is year is to prayerful consider the role of catechist for religious education

We have openings for catechists in grades 4-8 The children of this age want to know Jesus, want to be his friend, want to discover their gifts and

share them with others. Training WILL BE provided and supported throughout the program year

Classes meet twice a month on Saturday mornings 9:30am-12 noon All adult volunteers are required to be compliant with the Protecting Gods’ Children directives. For r more information on how you can PARTNER WITH THE PARENTS to HAND on the

FAITH contact the Religious Ed. office at 773-286-0956 or [email protected]
