James Howard was named the 10th head coach in Georgetown women’s basketball history in June, 2017. He was promoted after serving as the associate head coach for two seasons.Howard returned to the Hilltop after being an assistant coach for the Blue & Gray during the 1997-98 season.
“I’m excited to introduce James as the new head coach for our women’s basketball program,” Reed said. “He is an excellent coach with many years of experience and a familiarity with our student-athletes. I am confident he will continue to build upon our foundation as we strive to be one of the best teams in the BIG EAST Conference.”
The last two seasons, Howard has helped the Hoyas to a 33-27 record and two-consecutive appearances in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). He coached All-BIG EAST honorees Dorothy Adomako and Dionna White in each of the past two years on the Hilltop.
Howard came to Georgetown from Bethune-Cookman University where he spent four seasons, including three as the associate head coach. The Washington, D.C., native began there as the recruiting coordinator. He helped bring in two-time All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) honoree Kailyn Williams.
Prior to Bethune-Cookman, Howard was the recruiting coordinator and associate head coach at Howard University under former Hoya Niki Reid Geckeler. He went to Howard when Reid Geckeler earned the job in 2008. He remained there for three seasons, moving into the role of associate head
coach during the 2010-11 season. Howard recruited the class that led the way to back-to-back 20-win seasons.
Howard began his coaching career in the men’s game as a student assistant coach at Greensboro College for two seasons (1987-89). He then served as a men’s assistant coach at Wesley College for two years, before switching to the women’s game in 1991.Howard was the head women’s basketball coach at Wesley from 1991-97 where he was 75-69 over six seasons. Following his one-year stint at Georgetown, he served as the director of basketball operations (1998-99) at the University of Maryland before being promoted to assistant coach (1999-2000).
In 2000, he moved on to George Mason University where he was an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator for seven seasons. Howard spent one season (2007-08) at Delaware State before returning to the District to coach at Howard.
Howard is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the Black Coaches Association (BCA). He was chosen by the NBA to do a coaches clinic in Bermuda and founded the first chapter of Future Farmers of America (FFA) in Washington, D.C.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Greensboro College in 1991. Howard has two grown sons, Marco and Michael. He resides in Camp Springs, Md., and is engaged to Donna Harris.

• GU’s WNIT first round game against Delaware pitted the Hoyas against former coach Natasha Adair who is in her first season at Delaware.
• Cynthia Petke was named to the All-Tournament Team at the BIG EAST Tournament for her efforts in GU’s trip to the semifinals. It was the first time in 19 seasons that the Hoyas made it to the semifinals.
• The sidelines will look familiar for a second time this season as former Hoya Monica McNutt took the micro-phone for a pair of games on the BIG EAST Digital Network. McNutt was an All-BIG EAST guard for the Hoyas appearing in two NCAA Tournaments.
• Ebiho T. Ahonkhai (F’97) was inducted into the Georgetown Hall of Fame the weekend of St. John’s and Seton Hall. A two-time team captain and most valuable player, Ahonkhai led the Hoya basketball team in scoring as a junior and received All-BIG EAST recognition in her final two years. She ranks second at Georgetown in career field goal percentage at 50.5 percent, and earned BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors as well as the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Award as a senior before graduating in 1997. Ahonkhai was also a part of the 1993 squad that went to the Sweet 16. The team is being honored on Alumni Day against St. John’s.
• The women’s basketball team participated as GU, in conjunction with the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF), hosted a clinic for young athletes at McDonough Arena. The event featured elite athletes from the WSF as well as many Georgetown student-athletes to celebrate the 32nd Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). The girls varied in age, but all were impacted by the tremendous stories from the athletes. Starting off the program was WSF President and six-time Winter X Games medalist Grete Eliassen who shared her background as a skier and what Title IX has meant to the many athletes before her. It also featured paralympic sprinter and jumper Scout Bassett, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist boxer Claressa Shields and auto Racer Shea Holbrook.
• Prior to leaving for Villanova, the Hoyas attended a pep rally at KIPP Academy in Southeast DC. The team celebrat-ed with the kids and also promoted two upcoming school day games for the Blue & Gray in which KIPP Academy will be in attendance.
• Dionna White was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll following Xavier and Butler. It was the third nod to the weekly honor for White this season and the seventh of her career. In a 2-0 week for the Hoyas, White averaged 16.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals. The junior shot 50 percent from the field in Friday’s 63-52 win at Butler, totaling 19 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists. On Sunday, White managed 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 65-48 victory at Xavier.
• One person on the St. John’s broadcast was very familiar with the Hoya squad. Faith Woodard made her George-town debut in the game at St. John’s as the sideline reporter. Woodard was a key player for the Hoyas for the past four seasons and is now in graduate school at Columbia.
• The Hoyas have been active in the community. The group hosted a Girl Scout Troop helping them earn their Sports-manship Badge. Additionally, the team served meals at Miriam’s Kitchen and also helped load cars at the Salvation Army Angel Tree warehouse.
• Senior center Yazmine Belk hit 100 career blocks with four against Butler. She has been among the league’s block leaders all season.
• White was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, January 1 for her efforts over two games. In a 1-1 opening BIG EAST week for the Hoyas, White averaged 21.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals, including 25 points and eight boards in a 75-43 win at Providence.
• Senior guard Mikayla Venson eclipsed the 1,000 career point mark in the loss at Creighton. Venson came to the Hilltop with 837 career points at UVA.
• The game against MInnesota was Georgetown’s final nonconference home game of the season. GU finished nonconference home play with a mark of 2-1, and was 5-5 overall in nonleague play.
• The Hoyas played three home games and six road contests in nonconference play including three games in the 2017 Challenge in Music City.
• Junior guard Dionna White was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll the league announced on Monday, De-cember 4. It was the second weekly honor for the Hoyas this season and the fifth of her career. In the Hoyas’ lone game of the week, a 77-56 victory over FIU, White eclipsed the 1,000-career point mark with 24 points, adding a career-high 13 rebounds, four assists and three steals in the victory.
• Mikayla Venson was named to the All-Tournament team at the Challenge in Music City. For the tourna-ment, she managed 41 points averaging 13.7 ppg in the tournament. She was second on the team with seven assists and averaged 2.0 rpg.
• The 55 points in the first half against Howard was the first time the Hoyas have gone over 50 points in a half since a 2013 win at Alaska-Anchorage.
• The Hoyas are wearing SB on their uniforms to honor women’s basketball administrator Sharon Brummell in her fight against breast cancer. She is the Georgetown SWA and has been battling since last season.
• James Howard was named the 10th head coach in Georgetown women’s basketball history in June 2017. He was promoted after serving as the associate head coach for two seasons. Howard returned to the Hilltop after being an assistant coach for the Blue & Gray during the 1997-98 season.• The Hoyas named six captains this season. Seniors Dorothy Adomako, Cynthia Petke, DiDi Burton, Mikayla Venson and junior Dionna White will all lead the squad, which returns four of five starters from a season ago.
• White earned unanimous BIG EAST Conference Preseason honors at the league’s annual women’s basketball media day held at Madison Square Garden in New York City in October. Additionally, the Hoyas were picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll, receiving 43 points. White led the Hoyas in scoring last season with 15.2 ppg as well as a squad-best 46 3-pointer’s. She managed a team-high 97 steals on the defensive end and also pulled down 5.1 rpg. White was second on the team in assists with 92 and posted 16 blocked shots. She was a Second Team All-BIG EAST honoree as a sophomore.
• Georgetown spent Thanksgiving in Nashville at the Challenge in Music City. The Hoyas faced Auburn University (Nov. 24), the The University of Tennessee-Chattanooga (Nov. 25) and Northwestern University (Nov. 26). Auburn Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy was formerly at Georgetown and worked with Assis-tant Coach Niki Reid Geckler on the Hilltop.
• DiDi Burton traveled to New York City to take part in the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) Athlete Leader-ship Connection, held at Morgan Stanley’s Interna-tional Headquarters in New York City in October. This full-day development conference brought together industry leaders, sports experts and champion athletes to address the specific issues that female athletes face while competing in their sport or in the transition from their competitive careers to their next professional opportunity. The day also featured breakout sessions that focused on interview skills and resume building, and attendees were then given the opportunity to interview with companies specifi-cally tailored to their career goals. Tennis great Billie Jean King and highly-decorated U.S. Paralympian Bonnie St. John delivered keynote addresses.

• The Georgetown University women’s basketball team was one of 30 schools selected to be part of the NCAA’s Women’s Basketball Advancement Program. The Hoyas and Marquette were the only two schools in the BIG EAST Conference selected to be a part of the pilot program, which had more than 80 applicants. The Women’s Basketball Advancement Program, a two-year pilot program, is designed to continue to grow women’s basketball through mar-keting and branding efforts. Through the program, Georgetown will benefit from the expertise of several industry leaders in those fields. The program will also seek out the creativity of college basketball market-ers throughout the country.
• The Hoyas have been incredibly active in the com-munity since Howard has taken the helm. The team did work at So Others Might Eat preparing and serv-ing meals in the Georgetown community. Addition-ally, the squad helped pack bags for the I On Hunger Feeding Children Everywhere Foundation, which helped hurricane victims in Puerto Rico, Florida and Texas and have adopted a classroom in Arizona.
• Georgetown added four freshmen to the roster as Breonna Mayfield, Lexi Kimball, Tatiana Thompson and Sari Cureton will make their debut this season. Additionally, Brianna Jones and Anita Kelava have transferred into the program and will have to sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules before being eligible for 2018-19. Jones is from Louisville and Kelava is a transfer from Maine.
• Two Georgetown alums have seen success in the WNBA in the past few seasons. Rebekkah Brunson won her fifth WNBA championship with the Min-nesota Lynx this year. That makes her the only player in league history to have won five championships. Sugar Rodgers was named the WNBA’s Sixth Woman of the Year after an outstanding campaign with the New York Liberty. Both were WNBA All-Stars this past year.
• Mikayla Venson joined the team last season trans-ferring from UVA where she broke Dawn Staley’s freshman 3-point record. After sitting out last season, she is ready to play. Venson understands sitting out after spending a good portion of high school out due to symtoms from a concussion. She was forced to train on her own instead of playing. Moving back to the DC area, she wanted to be closer to home and closer to her brother who she plays for.
• James Howard is back to his roots as a DC native. He grew up in the area and has coached at a number of local institutions. One of them was Howard where he coached under current assistant coach Niki Reid Geckeler.
