Tiny fingers and toes. A little yawn. A loud cry. An infant wrapped in swaddling clothes. "What will this child be?" It is a question every parent asks time and time again. As first steps are taken, as personalities emerge, as a child shows interest in reading or drawing or

climbing, the question is on our lips. "What will this child be?" This question is asked as John the Baptist is born. Will he be a priest like his father? Does his strange, unexpected name signal a departure from that inheritance? Could Elizabeth and Zechariah ever have predicted what would be? Under the tutelage of his priestly father, John "became strong in spirit." As an adult, John would retreat into the desert to preach repentance. He would attract a large following and eventually attract the attention of the rulers of the day. He would point out the adulterous ways of King Herod and would find himself in prison. Eventually, he would be beheaded. But today, he is a child, an infant newly born. On this special feast, we're reminded of the great humility required of parents. The character formation, the discipline and encouragement, the violin lessons and soccer practices ? every parental effort is subjected to the decisions of the child them self. Even children on a sure track by high school graduation transform under life's circumstances. Entrusting our children to God can be incredibly intimidating. "What will this child be," especially when that transformation lies outside of my control? John the Baptist's story might not have ended as his parents imagined. But he is celebrated as the greatest of the prophets, as the one who prepared the way for the Messiah. Here is the hope of all Christian parents -- that our children would be raised in such a way that when people meet them, they meet Jesus Christ.

Knights of Columbus in Action—Religious Freedom Week 2018—June 22-June 29

Our first, most cherished liberty, religious freedom is often challenged today at the international, national, state and local levels. In support of the USCCB "Religious Freedom Week" the Knights have organized a "March for

Religious Freedom" on Sunday July 1st at 11:45AM. We will assemble in front of the church and will then march to the Veterans Memorial at the Walworth County building complex. At the conclusion of the march, all are welcome to join us in Saint Anthony's Hall for prayer and fellowship. The Knights will provide beverages and everyone is encouraged to bring a dish to share. Pre-planning a Funeral Mass – For those who may be interested, there are books and forms that can be picked up in the office for those who may like to take care of some details of a funeral Mass so family members won’t be so

overwhelmed and your wishes may be made known. Another topic that often comes up when funeral planning is cremation. Following are some questions and answers that are the teachings/guidelines of the Catholic Church and the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. 1) Can Catholics be cremated? Yes, the bodies of Catholics may be cremated. Cremation is permitted a long as the body is not cremated as a protest against the Christian belief in the resurrection of the dead. Fam-ilies do not need to ask for church permission for a loved one to be cremated. 2) What kind of container is appropriate? Worthy containers, such as the classic funeral urn, are appropriate. Keeping the ashes in pieces of jewelry, in statuary, or other objects are unacceptable practices. 3) Where are the ashes to be placed? The ashes must be placed in a grave or niche in a mausoleum (columbarium) as soon after the funeral Mass as possible. They are never to be kept in the possession of the family or scat-tered, since these practices are not the reverent disposition the Church requires. We have respect for the dead human body, and it should be treated with the same reverence as a whole body in a casket. Human remains should be buried in blessed or consecrated ground. Catholic cemeteries call to mind the resurrection of the dead and the communion of saints. 4) May the ashes be present at the Funeral Mass? It is preferable for the body to be present for the funeral Mass. After the Mass the body may be cremated. If this is not possible, the ashes should absolutely be present at the Funeral Mass. When the ashes are not present, a Memorial Mass would be celebrated. 5) May the ashes be mixed with cremated remains of other individuals, pets, or other objects? No. Because of our belief in the resurrection of the body, these practices are not allowed and have never been acceptable.

LA NATIVIDAD DE SAN JUAN BAUTISTA (24 de Junio 2018)

“Todos se preguntaban lo que el niño llegaría a ser, pues la mano del Señor estaba con Él”. (Lucas 1:57-66.80)

Meditación del Papa Francisco Hoy, 24 de junio, celebramos la solemnidad del Nacimiento de san Juan Bautista. Con excepción de la Virgen María, el Bautista es el único santo del que la liturgia celebra el nacimiento, y lo hace porque está íntimamente vinculado con el misterio de la Encarnación del Hijo de Dios. De hecho, desde el vientre materno Juan es el precursor de Jesús: el ángel anuncia a María su concepción prodigiosa como una señal de que “para Dios nada hay imposible”, seis meses antes del gran prodigio que nos da la salvación, la unión de Dios con el hombre por obra del Espíritu Santo. Los cuatro Evangelios dan gran relieve a la figura de Juan el Bautista, como profeta que concluye el Antiguo Testamento e inaugura el Nuevo, identificando en Jesús de Nazaret al Mesías, al Consagrado del Señor. De hecho, será Jesús mismo quien hablará de Juan con estas palabras: "Este es de quien está escrito: Yo envío a mi mensajero delante de ti, para que prepare tu camino ante ti. En verdad os digo que no ha nacido de mujer uno más grande que Juan el Bautista; aunque el más pequeño en el reino de los cielos es más grande que él. San Juan, el hombre. En la primera lectura se nos dice que Dios lo eligió “desde el vientre de su madre”. Esto no significa que Dios trajo a un hombre a la existencia para darle una misión, sino que, porque necesita un profeta, nació un hombre. El hombre nace para cumplir una misión. Y cumpliendo cada uno con su misión se realiza como persona. Lo importante es poder decir: “Misión cumplida”. Lo que hay que hacer en la vida, a veces, vale más que la vida misma. Normalmente, cuando nos preguntan como a Juan: Tú, ¿quién eres?. Sacamos todos nuestros títulos…soy Doctorado, Licenciado, Obispo, Párroco, Maestro etc. En cambio San Juan dice Yo no soy…El Mesías. No soy profeta…No soy… Soy la voz de otro que es el importante. Ser hombre es saber dar paso a otro que viene detrás de nosotros. San Juan el profeta. A veces entendemos mal eso de profeta. Decimos que es como un adivino que ve el futuro y nos habla de lo que va a pasar. Pero el profeta es el que anuncia y denuncia. Anuncia la Buena Nueva de Dios o de Jesucristo. Da buenas noticias sobre Dios y sobre Jesús. Y denuncia todo lo que está mal. San Juan era muy estimado por el rey Herodes. Éste le escuchaba, le respetaba. Pero un día el rey se cansó de su mujer y se encaprichó por su cuñada. Esto era un escándalo pero la gente, como era el rey, nadie se atrevía a decirle nada. Y llega Juan y le dice: No te es lícito tomar la mujer de tu hermano. Y le costó la cárcel y después la vida. Pero dijo la verdad, Pueden encarcelar al profeta, pero no su palabra. Y cuando lo matan toda su vida se convierte en “palabra” en testimonio… San Juan, el Santo. De San Juan se dice que “nunca abaja el dedo”. No puede porque siempre debe apuntar a Jesucristo, a Dios. Dios es el Absoluto, el único necesario a quien debemos adorar. Yo no soy lo definitivo. Santos que sepan transmitir esa fe. (Se cuenta del niño que va con su padre a visitar una Catedral a medio día y el niño pregunta por esa figura que aparece en una de las vidrieras. Es un santo, le dice el padre. Y cuando la Maestra en la clase de religión pregunta a ver quién sabe qué es un santo, el niño responde: Un hombre que deja pasar la luz. Bonita definición de santo. Así fue San Juan. Un hombre lleno de luz, lleno de Dios y dejaba pasar esa luz a los demás. Necesitamos santos. Hombres y mujeres que señalen con el dedo a Dios y después sepan transmitir esa luz, esa fe, ese amor esa dulzura a los demás. PARA REFLEXIONAR: 1. ¿Qué será este niño?, decía la gente al ver a su padre mudo de estupor. 2- ¿Será un profeta, o será un vidente?
