GOODBYE AND THANK YOU

August 2010 was my first time to come to Stellenbosch and the Dwars River Valley. The road meandered down the mountain. Oh my word, I thought as this scenery looked lovely, with lovely weather and fresh air. Little did I know that even the community of this valley was just as good as the scenery that I was witnessing. At first I had mixed feelings as I was told that this is a coloured community and being a black foreigner, made my heart skip of fear. This quickly vanished as I got used the community and realized that I was afraid for no reason. Every person I met was as friendly as the other. I give praise to you all!

I have learned a great deal from this community. People still have love and still keep family values. In some other areas in South Africa you will not approach taxi drivers because they are full of insults. But not in Kylemore and Pniël. The taxi drivers here are very helpful and easy going buddies. May the Almighty keep you safe on the road.

I have also been lucky enough to be employed by the publishers of Riviernuus. I give praise to the Lawrence and Lackay families for bringing up an editor and graphic designer who are making it possible for everyone in the community to know the unknowns of this valley.

I unfortunately have to leave this wonderful valley due to family commitments and as I write this letter, please pray for me to arrive safely in my home country, Zimbabwe.

I will pray to the Almighty that I will still find you as one family should I return one day.

- Mary Muza

Dear editor,

I take this time to thank you for advertising great news and updates in community welfare. You are simply an inspiration. Who would have thought that our valley’s own people will for free deliver such a great newspaper. If I'm bored and don't know what to do, believe me that most of the times I grab an old Riviernuus just to make sure that I didn’t miss out on an article. Because of this great newspaper, I got the chance to improve my career as I’ve been accepted at the ICA for the Chef training and it will certainly help me in future.

Thanks! Local is Lekka!

'n Vriendelike Versoek... ons op

Goue Vroue

WENBRIEF: ‘N GLIMLAG, BAIE HERINNERINGE...

Ja, nêrens in die wye wêreld, was ek al so gelukkig soos in my eie Kylemore nie!!

Mooi bly,

180 JAAR OUD EN NOG PURE GOUD

Getroude paartjie is saam:

ONS MENSEPrestasie

3Riviernuus August 2012

“My niggies het ons kom vertel dat daar baie werk was by Rhodes Fruit Farms (RFF) se fabriek,” sê Ouma Mina.

“Ek het darem seker gemaak my kinders kry ietsie lekker soos viskaaiings, rooi polony of namelekkers.”

Capturing Chad's Moment of Golden GloryWhen Chad Le Clos (left) won a gold medal for South Africa in the 200m Butterfly swimming event at the London Olympics, photographs capturing this unbelievable moment were splashed around the world in newspapers and over the internet.

While this was a remarkable achievement by 20 year old Chad, Riviernuus discovered that the man responsible for some of those amazing photographs hails from Gordon's Bay. He is Roger Sedres (photo right), a professional photographer who is currently in London covering the Olympics. Roger shared his story with us:"Swimming at the Olympic Games is a 'high demand ticket' event. Each Olympic Committee participating in the swimming receives 2 tickets for their photographers, each evening. Unfortunately I was not allocated a

ticket and I was down the whole day as I so dearly wanted to get pictures of Chad le Clos. At about 4pm on the day of the event, I found out that there was a small chance of getting a ticket via the International Olympic Committee (IOC) ticket office. The IOC receives all the media tickets back from the Associations that don't collect their allocated tickets. So, I stood in a queue from 16h00 until 17h30 when the IOC handed out the few available tickets and I was number 4. It was worth having the patience and the rest is swimming history."

Well done Roger, you have captured these historic moments brilliantly!

So kom GEMEENSKAP laat ons nou EENHEID bereik.

7Mayor meets 'Stars of Tomorrow'

In a week where everybody in South Africa celebrated the achievements of its greatest leader, Nelson Mandela, the Outreach Programme had the honour to be visited by the Executive Mayor of Stellenbosch, Mr Conrad Sidego.

Mayor Sidego was visibly overwhelmed by the programme, which the team from Stellenbosch University’s Sport Performance Institute (SUSPI) had prepared, to showcase their Youth Sport Initiative in action. In addition, it was clear that he enjoyed the interaction with the 51 learners from PC Petersen Primary School, who enthusiastically welcomed him on the community sports ground in Kylemore.

Kylemore is one of currently nine greater Stellenbosch communities participating in the Outreach Programme. Through the assistance of local teenagers, from the Kylemore High School, as well as young, local and very passionate adults, SUSPI and

Stellenbosch University reach the primary school children of PC Petersen on a weekly basis. The programme uses sport as a tool to educate the participating scholars about important life skills, such as friendship and respect, as well as age appropriate health education. The Outreach Programme is a part of SUSPI’s overall Youth Sport Initiative and as such is officially registered as a HOPE Project of the Stellenbosch University.

On the day, Dr. Jerome Slamat, Senior Director of Stellenbosch University’s Department of Community Interaction, welcomed the Mayor formally. Dr. Slamat extended an invite to Mayor Sidego that the Municipality and Stellenbosch University join hands to reach more youth through initiatives like the Outreach Programme. Subsequent to Dr. Slamat the Mayor inspired the young 'stars’ in Kylemore through his passionate speech. The youngsters were all ears as the honorable Mayor Sidego explained to them, that he himself arose from a small, rural area. “Through hard work, discipline and the willingness to go the extra-mile one can overcome local challenges and achieve one’s goals,” the Mayor explained.

A final handing over of a signed football from the children to the Executive Mayor as well as a framed picture, showing the Kylemore group in action, to Municipal Councillor for Sport and Youth, Quintin Smit, closed the official part of the programme.

Through a little pressure from the children, the Mayor was asked to participate in a penalty shoot out against 8 year old Cameron De Wee, Dr. Slamat and Quintin Smit with the latter two acting as goalkeepers. Although the Mayor removed

his jacket and tie, it surprisingly ended 2:1 in Cameron’s favor.

The whole team at SUSPI feels very honored that the Mayor made some of his valuable time available to visit one of the Youth Sport Initiative’s projects. It was a proud milestone for the Outreach Programme and opened the door for Stellenbosch Municipality and SUSPI to together build more hope amongst young children in and around Stellenbosch.

We want to make every day a Mandela Day.

So you want to buy a house but have no idea what to do, where to start or what the requirements might be? These are just some of the daunting questions many first time home buyers face.

Here are a couple of things that you should note:

1. Maintain a good credit rating: The first thing that any bank will do when assessing your home loan application is to check your credit rating. Ensure that you always pay your debt on time to avoid any nasty surprises.

2. Save up for a deposit: Whether you are currently renting a home or still living at your parents, the surplus money in your budget should not be spend on luxuries or unnecessary expenses or that new car. Instead start saving all those extra pennies, it will teach you discipline and get you into the habit of saving. Banks are also far more likely to grant a home loan if you have a deposit which is normally between 10-20% of the purchase price.

3. Work out what you can afford: Analyse your income and expenses very carefully to work out what you can afford. Bear in mind that home ownership comes with additional expenses and responsibilities beyond merely paying a bond, i.e. water, electricity, property taxes, etc. Also remember that interest rates fluctuate and this should also be taken into consideration.

4. Where to buy (Area): They say it's better to buy the worst house in a great area than the best house in a bad area. Consider the following; proximity to your workplace and good schools, friends and family, even if you don't have children

FIRST TIME HOME OWNERSyet, and the crime rate (the local police station could assist with the crime statistics for the neighbourhood). It also helps to spend time driving around the area in the daytime and at night, talk to neighbours, to get a “feel” for the area.

Good News! With the latest cut in interest rate by The Reserve Bank Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) it has reduced the repurchase rate by 50 basis points to 5.0 percent and prime rates will be 8.5 percent. This creates a favourable environment for first time buyers as it makes owning a home more affordable. Bear in mind that in December 2008 we had a prime interest rate of 15.5%. (See below)

environmental issues

Bottled water – scourge or saviour? The World Water Crisis is a very real phenomenon, and despite the good rains experienced over the past few months locally, we cannot rest on our laurels and assume that it is not necessary to conserve water.

Currently over 1 billion people lack access to clean, safe, affordable drinking water. It is predicted that by 2025, two-thirds of the world population will lack access to water.

It is interesting to note the amount of bottled water consumed by South Africans. In 2005 it was estimated that 196 million litres of bottled water were consumed, and in 2010 this figure rocketed to about 568 million litres*.

The industry itself is booming, and the 2011 global market was estimated at R628.7 billion, which has nearly doubled since 2006*.

One needs to reflect why people are moving towards bottled water than tap water. There is the perception that bottled water is safer to drink than tap water, although studies revealed that bottled water is no safer than tap water, and public tap water is more regulated than bottled water. Another reason is the perception that bottled water

tastes better than tap water, although in tap water challenges in Seattle, USA, people could not tell the difference#.

Opponents to bottled water would argue that it is foolish to spend between R6-8 per 500ml bottled water compared to 0.5c for the equivalent quantity of tap water. It is further reported that for the filtration of bottled water, approximately 7l is wasted for every 3l bottled. The light, soft, easily consumed and non-filling quality of bottled water is as a result of reverse osmosis, which is more expensive and inefficient than filtration#.

Some of the social impacts could potentially be the decreased political support to fund our public water systems if there is a belief that the only clean, safe drinking water is from a bottle. This is not helped if one considers the financial backlog between infrastructure needs and the budgeted amounts which is huge. Another social challenge is the fact that up to 40% of bottled water comes from already treated municipal water systems, which is paid for at the taxpayers expense. This is then sold back to the public for much more#.

However, the greatest criticism is levelled at the environmental impacts resulting from bottling water.

These include:• The US market required 17 millions

barrels of oil and generated 2.5milliontonsofCO2inmanufacturingtheplasticwaterbottles

• Theentireenergycostsofthelifecycleofbottledwaterisequivalenttofillingeachbottlewithaquarterofoil

• Some bottlers extract large volumesfrom springs and aquifers, which notonlydriesup thewells, butalsodepletewetlandsanddrainrivers

• Each year 2 billion kilograms of PETplastic bottles end up in landfills orroadsidelitter

• Recycling rates of plastic water bottlesare less than 20% in the USA, and lessthan10%globally#.

It is fortunately not doom and gloom, as PETCO has been fairly successful in increasing its recycling rates by 30% year

on year, and in 2010 had a PET recycling rate of 38% of post-consumer beverage PET. Their target for 2015 is set at 49%.

However, as reported in earlier articles, it is important for consumers to adopt the Avoid, Reduce, Re-use, Recycle lifestyle, in this order. Re-using the PET bottles results in more and more leaching of the phthalate into the water, particularly as the bottle gets older, thereby affecting the quality of the water.

There is a drive by many leading organisations to ban bottled water at their meetings and conferences, and the City of Cape Town and Western Cape Government have already taken steps in that direction.

* Figures from Mail & Guardian (10 Sep 2010)# Hays, M – The Social and Environmental Impacts of Bottled Water

In the last few weeks a number of residents in Kylemore have expressed their concern over the quality of the village’s drinking water.

Readers have brought it to Riviernuus' attention that the water at times contained excessive amounts of chlorine. Riviernuus investigated the matter and spoke to officials at the Water Purification section of the Stellenbosch Municipality.

According to them, Kylemore receives its water from the Wemmershoek Water System which is run by the City of Cape Town (CoCT). Addition to the normal purification process of the CoCT, the municipality adds HTH chlorine powder to the water. Sometimes the chlorine settles at the bottom of the reservoirs and forms lumps. These lumps are then discharged into the water system which leads to the unpleasant smell and taste. Currently chlorine is also added manually and the official acknowledged that this could also be a cause of the water problem. The official said that the excess chlorine in water is not harmful, but it could be the cause of the water being unsavoury. “It is safer to rather add too much than too little,” he said.

THE WATER IS SAFE TO DRINK “Stellenbosch Municipality wants to allay the fears that residents may have by stating that the water is safe to drink. The municipality is working towards a long term plan where the dosing of chlorine will be automated. Chlorine will then be added depending on the quality of the raw water received from the different water sources.

In the mean time the municipality will dose chlorine by using chlorine pills, instead of the HTH powder. The advantage of the pills system is that they dissolve gradually into the water system which would hopefully eliminate the problem.” Should you experience the same problem in your area, please contact the municipality on 021 808 8111.

SA se oudste Mediese Fonds is in Pniël

Mnr David Ruthford dien as voorsitter sedert 1986.

Dear residents of the Dwars River Valley, we've been here for a month now, and I feel very welcome in the community. Thank you!

I am now beginning to visit people for interviews, so you will see me walking in the streets. I will also hold a few discussions with people living in the valley.

I would love to hear from each and every one of you, but I will only be able to listen to a small group because of the time constraints on my work. If I haven't interviewed you, it isn't because I don't want to!

If you would like to speak to me, please come and visit me in my office near Bethlehem farm in Kylemore.

I would love to meet you!

From Locker Room to BoardroomOn 19 July Molenvliet Wine and Guest Estate hosted an event that was attended by an elite group of people.

The MC was Dan Retief, well known sports journalist and analyst; entertainment was provided by singer Randall Wicombe; key note speaker was the deputy minister of Sport, Gert Oosthuizen; the event was the launch of Ross van Reenen’s book: From Locker Room to Boardroom.

According to Ross (himself a former Free State Rugby player), more than 84% of professional rugby players in South Africa are going to find it difficult to survive financially once they stop playing. How will they find success in their new careers once their rugby jerseys have been washed for the last time?

From Locker Room to Boardroom explores how former South African rugby players culled certain traits from their playing

days and applied them to their enterprises in order to make a successful transition from the rugby field (locker room) to the business world (the boardroom).

Naas Botha, Breyton Paulse, Joel Stransky, Francois Pienaar, Eddie Andrews, Kobus Wiese, to name but a few, share the many challenges they faced and the different strategies they employed on the road to establishing the single factor that, more than other, lies at the root of their business success.

Filled with entertaining anecdotes, sound practical advice and pioneering business models, From Locker Room to Boardroom provides an unique and fascinating approach to achieving success in the commercial world.

Also present at the event was former Springboks Ockie Oosthuizen, owner of Molenvliet, Divan Serfontein, Eddie Andrews and Theuns Stoffberg.

550 athletes braved the cold rainy weather on Saturday 21 July 2012 to compete in Trial 5 of the Boland Athletics Cross Country competition.

The event was hosted by Dwars River Valley Athletics Club at the Pniël Sports Field.

The athletes were well supported by our dedicated technical officials and the many coaches and parents that accompanied them on the day.

Many parents said that they weren't so sure that much would happen on the day because of the weather, but they were all pleasantly surprised by the turn out at this event.

This is a very firm vote of confidence in the strong partnership and the good working relationship between Boland Athletics and Boland Schools to deliver meaningful development opportunities for our junior athletes.

A huge thanks to the Boland Athletics Cross Country Commission members and the Boland Schools officials for your sacrifice.

Thanks for the logistical, financial and general support from the Boland Athletics office in terms of the smooth flow of organising these events.

Kylemore Juniors kry nuwe klere

Pniël/Kylemore XV vs IrelandThe rugby teams of Pniël and Kylemore will form a Combined XV to play a match against Banbridge Rugby Club from Northern Ireland.

This historic match is scheduled to take place on Tuesday evening, 21 August, at Kylemore Sports Field and forms part of the Irish’s three match tour of the Western Cape. Their other two games will be against False Bay and Kraaifontein.

Banbrdige takes part in the Ulster Senior League and Division 2B of the All Ireland League.

According to Mr. Ivan Jacobs, who suggested the match to the two local clubs, Banbridge is a very strong club and a combined team

of Pniël and Kylemore should give good account of themselves. “This is also a perfect opportunity to strengthen the bonds between the two towns and who knows, maybe we can send a combined team overseas as well,” says Jacobs.

The final arrangements will be done by both clubs and their supporters groups will also be responsible for the after-match function. All residents are invited to attend this historic match as it promises to be an exciting game of rugby. Please support this combined team!

• Banbridge is planning to practice on Kylemore on Sunday morning, 18 August, to get acquainted with the environment and playing field. This is the only available day of their very tight tour programme.
