Honde of luiperd?

WENBRIEF: LANQUEDOC

Hierdie huis was in Middelstraat.

Nou hoef ek nie meer vir my pa te verduidelik hoekom my punte so swak was nie!

This month, Riviernuus introduces a brand new Classifieds section! If you have something to sell or have anything to announce, let us know and we’ll publish it free of charge. Yes, free of charge, but only for our next edition. This will give everybody an opportunity to sell their goods or services or to make an announcement. Contact us at 021 885 2392. The only restriction is that it must be less than 30 words. This opportunity is open to ANYBODY, so spread the word! First come, first serve.

Hy is sedert Februarie 2011 'n Gautenger.

My afrigter het my heeltyd gemotiveer.

My goue ouers en ouer broer speel ‘n baie groot rol in my prestasie.

The Dwars River Valley group, Hoping is Coping, recently went on a 'Bosberaad' to Hermanus to strategise and map out the road ahead.

This group, whose aim it is to assist people and families touched by cancer, has been in existence for a number of years. According to spokesperson, Roderick Jefthas, anybody is welcome to join. "There is a perception that the group is only open to cancer victims. This is not true as we welcome anybody in the valley that cares and can assist with this charitable task.

Cancer buddies, survivors or family members of survivors are all welcome," he says.

In the recent Relay for Life that was held in Paarl in honour of cancer survivors, where participants walked for 24 hours in relay teams, the Hoping is Coping Group was awarded for their efforts in raising the second highest amount for cancer survivors in the Boland area.

To join this remarkable group, please contact Yvonne Davids on 021 885 1118.

"The harder you work, the luckier you get" - Robert WilliamsTo most of us words such as Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) deals, investment banking, shareholding, private equity and venture capitalist are terms we have heard of, but do not understand.

There is however someone that grew up in our valley, to whom these financial terms are second nature. He is Mr. Robert Williams (54) who was born in Kylemore and whose life story sounds as if it could easily be that of Sol Kerzner or Donald Trump.

At his beautiful house in the tranquil Cape Town suburb of Camps Bay, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Robert granted us a rare glimpse into his life from having been denied entry at PC Petersen Primary, up to his current hotel empire around the world. "I was a lecturer at Peninsula Technicon (now Cape Peninsula University of Technology, CPUT) and realised that I didn't want to teach my whole life," he says.

"It all started because I wasn't allowed entry into PC Petersen Primary. One had to be six years old to be admitted and I turned six on 19 January that year, only a few days after school started. I was at home for almost the whole year until my parents decided to cut my extended holiday short and enrolled me at Blouvlei Primary in Retreat," he says. "What I didn't realise then was that this move was setting the trend for my entire career. In the Cape Town suburbs I was exposed to many different things than my mates in Kylemore and although I missed them very much, I enjoyed the different exposure," says Robert whose father is a Jantjies from Kylemore.

What is astonishing about Robert's achievements, is the fact that he accomplished all of his qualifications at a time when black educated professionals were very uncommon in South Africa.

Most of his friends wanted to become carpenters or bricklayers, but he decided early on in his life that he didn't want to grow up in a working class.

Robert obtained his first degree in economics from University of Western Cape (UWC) in 1979. After a two year stint at Pep Stores as manager, he went to New York on an internship. He then obtained his Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Stellenbosch and the same year was appointed as lecturer at CPUT.

Soon after that he took a sabbatical in England where he started his PhD, based in Wales, and was a visiting professor at universities in Bristol and Durham (both in Scotland).

It was upon his return to South Africa in 1988, that Robert realised lecturing wasn't for him. "Apart from the satisfaction of seeing your students obtain their qualifications, it wasn't very fulfilling. I gave, but didn't really get anything back. God blessed me with an entrepreneurial talent,” he says proudly.

Robert officially started his journey into the world of investments by becoming an equal partner and director of NSA Management (a private equity company) and said he was very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. He became very skillful in investment banking and invested in Build-O-Rama of which he initially owned 25% to become the sole proprietor of the company.

In 1994 he promoted and jointly established Siphumelele Investments. The aim of the company was to unite black and coloured businessmen by offering them the opportunity to invest R20 000 each. They successfully convinced 87 investors and with this R1.8million they approached corporates such as Shell, Mobil, banks and various others for investment opportunities. At one point Siphumelele had acquired 25% shareholding in Spur, 51% in CapeTalk Radio, 25% in Fedics and 10% in PSG. At the same time Robert also assisted a company called Akani Investments (division of Gold Reef Resorts) to build a portfolio of 16 hotels.

Entrepreneur Robert Williams

"You build a house fromthe bottom and

not from the top."

In 2004 Siphumelele Investments paid out their shareholders and by this time Robert had become quite an expert in the hotel industry. He acquired Dock's Seafood Restaurant at the Cape Town Waterfront and went on to form the Savoy Hotel Group with its first hotel in Kimberley in 2006. Apart from the Savoy Hotel in Kimberley, his property portfolio and management business today include hotels in Zanzibar and Sierra Leone.

Four years ago Robert married the beautiful Jana. She is in charge of the company's marketing and also holds two Masters Degrees. "I realised that you can't take all these things with you one day and decided to consolidate my investments. I spend more hours working every day than the average person, so now it is very nice to come home and relax where nobody will bother me,” says this astute businessman.

Robert owes his success to four things in his life:• “A conservative family – We are God

fearing people• A hard working family• Exposure to an environment where

people were affluent and I wanted to be like them

• I loved school and at university became a student leader where I was very involved with commerce student activities.”

As a Christian, Robert still sang in the church choir up to four years ago and has very good relationships in the communities he hails from.

For entrepreneurs and people in the Dwars River Valley he offers very simple advice: "You build a house from the bottom and not from the top. Only in the dictionary is success before work and nowhere else. Everyone's challenges are unique and one should learn from them. If I can do it, anyone can," says the entrepreneur who was born and bred in the Dwars River Valley.

The Dwars River Valley has 5 new entrepreneurs, all of whom have just completed the Flying Kites Entrepreneurs Leadership course.

They have all compiled extensive business plans and comprehensive financials and will be running their business according to sound and viable business principles.

Additionally they have developed an understanding of their marketing needs and

how to analyse the market and their competitors.  Each participant has performed a SWOT and PEST analysis of their market and is able to implement strategies to gain market share and grow their client base.

Alexandro Lyons (one of the entrepreneurs) has this to say: “...having done this course has made me understand the realities of business much better and has made my dream and my goal seem a lot closer and easier to achieve.”

The course is designed to assist those with dreams of working for themselves and becoming entrepreneurs, understanding the realities of business and how to be competitive in the tough trading environment that exists in this day and age.

Become a ChefA Golden Culinary Opportunity

“To be a chef is unbelievable. It opens doors in your life and even

allow you to travel oversees. The comfort to work with food is amazing. You don’t get it right all

the time, but no pain no gain. It is hard work, but very rewarding

at the same time.- Sergio Sedeman, Head Chef at

Le Pommier Restaurant

“If you have a passion for food, it is a very stimulating career. After

you finish your qualification, you can even go to a restaurant and

offer to work for free for a period. If you are good enough, you

will get a job.”- Marthinus Brink, Owner and

Chef at Motty’s Foods

This month’s network session took place at the lovely Lumley’s Place in Johannesdal.

We had the privilege to see a master chef at work! Local Chef Isaac Monaheng did a food demonstration which was absolutely wonderful. He prepared a white tomato soup and a beef casserole. Chef Isaac has his own business and he specializes in catering for all types of functions or celebrations.

The network session was also held in the name of good fellowship and giving.

We as a community have seen the need of our children and wanted to help them in any way possible. As it is winter and there

is a very big demand for warmth and heat, we decided to give just that.

The idea behind our session was to invite our guests to bring any gift, voluntarily, to the session which then would be distributed to all our local crèches and schools. Local businesses, entrepreneurs, etc. were invited and we had great attendance. We received many gifts and are very thankful to our members and tourism friends for their contributions.

Our Arts & Craft members also had the opportunity to display their beautiful craftsmanship.

Thank you to Lumley’s Place for their warm welcome and opening their doors for this great initiative.

Our message with this month’s session:“As the Dwarsrivier Valley Community, let us all take hands in more ways than one and give to others who are less fortunate than us.”

Networking with a difference

Riviernuus sal vanaf volgende maand gereelde elektrisiteitswenke plaas.

The existing waste water treatment works just outside Lanquedoc will undergo a major upgrade.

A draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) has been completed by Doug Jeffery Environmental Consultants and is available for public comment at the Pniël Library. According to Lindsay Speirs from Doug Jeffery, the upgrade will be done in two phases. Phase 1 will cater for the proposed new Boschendal Development and Phase 2 will be implemented to accommodate the future growth of Lanquedoc, Pniël, Johannesdal and Kylemore.

The closing date for public comment is on 18 July 2012. A final report will then be compiled and made available for 21 days for any further comments. Thereafter the report will be sent to the Department of Environmental Affairs and the final decission will in all likelihood be towards the latter part of this year. Ms Speirs does not foresee any interruptions in current treatment operations during the upgrade.

If you have any comment or enquiry about the proposed upgrade, please contact Lindsay Speirs on 021 875 5272 or email at [email protected]

Organic material constitutes a large proportion of the waste stream. It is estimated that between 27-40% of the waste we generate in this region is organic.

Although the focus has predominantly been on recyclables, and on the assumption that that is where money can be generated, the organic fraction has largely been ignored. This is usually the fraction of waste that decomposes, producing foul odours and attracts vermin such as rats, flies and pathogens to the waste.

Composting has been one of the oldest and more commonly-known treatment techniques applied to organic waste. This product is rich in nutrients and is used in gardens, landscaping, horticulture and agriculture.

Compost requires 4 important constituents to work effectively. The first is carbon for energy, where the microbial oxidation of carbon produces heat. The second is nitrogen to grow and reproduce more organisms to oxidise the carbon. Materials which are rich in nitrogen tend to be green and colourful (such as fruits and vegetables) and wet. Oxygen is the third component and is important for the oxidising of carbon in the decomposition process. The fourth is water, which maintains the activity to prevent anaerobic conditions. It is for this reason that compost heaps must always be turned and watered, in order for air (oxygen) and moisture to be present.

The most important aspect is that the ratio of all 4 components must be such that it is not too much or too little. Too much air or water slows down the process, as will too much carbon and too little nitrogen. As the beneficial bacteria break down the material, the hotter the pile

gets, and the more critical the air/water balance. Carbon to nitrogen ratios of 30:1 gives the most efficient compost.

Compost can also be produced at household level. Vermicompost and Bokashi compost are two such examples. The former utilises various species of worms, such as earthworms, to create a mixture of decomposing vegetable or food waste. The end-product of the breakdown of organic matter by earthworms is known as vermicast.

Bokashi composting makes use of effective microbes (EMs). Kitchen waste is placed in a container which is sealed with an airtight lid. This waste is then inoculated with the Bokashi EM mix, which is a mixture of wheat bran predominantly, water, EM and molasses. The system contains all odours and the net result is an odourless compostable material which can be reused in the garden.

All of the above are just some examples of how organic waste can be treated without wasting it to landfill. For further enquiries, please contact [email protected].

In daardie jaar was die Pniël Horticultural and Industrial Society gestig.

The Children of Kylemore, together with Kylemore High School, PC Petersen Primary and Imbali, launched the Kylemore Children's Organic Gardening Project on Thursday, 31 May.

The main aim of this project is to grow vegetables that will support the existing school feeding scheme through fresh supplies. All surplus vegetables will be sold to insure that the project remains sustainable and generate a small income for the school. The children will also be taught in the finer skills of gardening.

The sponsors for the project are Africa Foundation USA and Trees4Schools.

“Julle bly in ‘n baie mooi plek”.

Whether this perception is accurate or not, is a challenge that we will have to address in the parts of our community that make up the Dwars River Valley Community, namely Banhoek, Kylemore, Johannesdal, Pniël, Lanquedoc and Groot Drakenstein.

Failure to address this perception will create a situation where service delivery agencies/institutions will instead choose to do things for us rather than with us, on the

COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS- m i k e F R A S E R

basis of this perception that we cannot/will not work together.

A good place for us to begin addressing this perception is to start a conversation about what community means to each one of us.

Community as used here is about the experience of belonging. First and foremost, to belong is to be related to and a part of something bigger than myself, to feel at home.

The second meaning of the word belong has to do with ownership. To belong is to act as an investor, a shareholder, co-owner and co-creator of this beautiful place. Ownership of our community demands

a willingness to be committed to, and accountable for my part in creating a community filled with possibility, compassion, generosity, accountability, and deep engagement.

Every community has its history and heritage, its buildings, leaders, schools, sports clubs, churches, etc. But these are not the only things that make a community unique or define its identity.

I firmly believe that the aspect of a community that gives it a new possibility is the conversation it chooses to have with itself, about itself. What is our conversation as a community of people, senior citizens, youth, schools, churches, organisations, business?

Join the conversation. Kom ons praat saam. Masikhulume.

Johannesdal PaaieWat dink julle van 'the Spear'?

Sy menswaardigheid was geskend sonder sy goedkeuring.”

HOU LANQUEDOC WARM & GEVOED

Liewe Pa, Dankie Pa- Elizabeth Isaacs-Withlow

The *Stars of Tomorrow project forms part of the Youth Sport Initiative, overseen by the team of the Stellenbosch University Sport Performance Institute (SUSPI).

It represents a major initiative to mobilize the power of sport, for youth education and development, in rural communities in the Greater Stellenbosch region. Through this programme, the university aims to address academic intervention, life skills programmes and sport. The first year was partly funded by the German NGO, *Stars of Tomorrow, and SUSPI. The programme is currently involved in nine primary schools and reaches between 350 and 400 children on a weekly basis.

One of the key primary schools at which this programme is implemented, is PC Petersen Primary in Kylemore. The programme here is overseen by an able team of professionals including David Kappel (SUSPI), Wade Thys (Stellenbosch Municipality), Samantha Frazenburg (Freelance Fitness Instructor), Granville Faas and Herschel Swartz (two scholars at Kylemore High). The programme started in June 2011 and focuses on learners who do not take part in school sport or who have difficulty in learning.

A typical practice will start with a welcoming game and a warm-up. Participants then learn new sport skills and subsequently play a competitive game (soccer, rugby, cricket, basket ball or netball) to practice the skills

taught. This is followed by an educational game for example illustrating friendship. Afterwards the community coaches facilitate an educational talk which is occasionally handed over to an educational specialist, like Grechard Petersen from Dwarsrivier Environmental Educational and Conservation Centre. On the 22nd of May he spoke about the importance of preserving the environment, by saving the lives of small insects and animals, as they all have an important role to play in nature. Grechard’s colleague, Adolf Adams, is another educational specialist who provides valuable information on snakes and what to do if you encounter one of them. The learners were captivated as Adolf showed them a real Puff Adder, Cape Cobra and Burmese Python.

The Kylemore group also takes part in SUSPI’s tournaments, where they compete against other Stellenbosch schools. Transport to the tournaments is a struggle so if anybody can assist them in this regard, please contact David Kappel on 021 808 2141.
