1. THE NORTHERN RHONE Principal AOCs: Cote-Rotie, Condrieu,
Chateau Grillet, St. Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas,
St. Peray Principal Grape varities: SYRAH, Viognier, Marsanne,
Roussanne, Clairette World renowned reds from the Syrah grape with
smoky, floral and roasted meat flavors that can age for decades.
Whites are lesser known, however Condrieu; made from 100% Viognier,
is revered for its complex aromas and incredible texture

vineyards in France Some of the steepest vineyards in the world,
& incredibly labor intensive to harvest Production is based
solely on red wine
3. Hermitage The Hermitage hill stands above the Rhne River and
the town of Tain-l'Hermitage.
4. Hermitage The vines grow on the south west side of a steep
granite hill facing the afternoon sun and can be divided into a
number of smaller vineyards. These are "Les Bessards" to the west,
"L'Hermite and "La Chapelle on the top of the mountain, and
"Bessards", "Le Mal", "Les Greffieux" and "Murets" to the east.
With 345 acres (1.40 km2) of vines, in soil composed greatly of
granite and gravels, Hermitage produces 730,000 bottles of mostly
red wines, annually Also... Rich, dry white wines are also produced
from a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne. These wines are also
usually left to age, for up to 15 years. Vin de paille or Straw
Wine is also produced in this region.
5. THE SOUTHERN RHONE Principal AOCs: Chateauneuf-du-Pape,
Vacqueras, Gigondas, Tavel, Beaumes-de- Venise, Cotes-du-
Rhone(village) Principal Grape Varieties: Grenache, Syrah,
Cinsault, Mourvedre, Counoise, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette
Southern Rhone known for its blended wines. Grenache is the
headliner for most red blends.
