The indicator light onbutton 1 will illuminate.The door is unlocked- by opening a front door.Note: If areardoorisopened, itwill automatically be locked againwhenthecarreachesaspeedofapprox. 4 mph (6 km/h).- by pressing the door unlockingbutton 1.Operating faultsIf younote a fault (noautomaticlocking, indicator lightincorporatedinthebutton1doesnotilluminatewhenthedoorsarelocked...), first checkthat that allthe doors are properly closed. Light indicatingthat theengineimmobiliser is operational.When the ignition is switched on,indicator light 1 comes on forapproximately three seconds andthen goes out. You can then startthe engine. Car protection indicator lightAfewsecondsaftertheignitionhasbeenswitchedoff, indicatorlight 1 will flash continuously.The car will not be protected untilthe key is removed from theignition. System malfunction warninglightIf warning light 1 continues toflash or remains illuminatedcontinuously after the ignition isswitched on, it indicates that thesystem is not operating correctly.If warninglight 2flashes whenthe car is being driven and isdecelerating or at idling speed, itindicates that thesystemis notoperating correctly.Use the second key (supplied withthe car). If you do not have access tothis, it is essential to call a RenaultDealerbecauseonlydealersintheRenault network are qualified torepair the engine immobiliser.Anyunauthorisedworkcarried out on the engineimmobiliser (computers,wiring, etc.) could bedangerous. To remove the head restraint:Press the tabs A and B of the headrestraint guides. Ensurethat it is in place and in thecorrect position. Thedistance between your head and thehead restraint should be as small aspossible. You must alsocomply with the local legislation inthe particular country you are in.Before driving off:- First ensure that your drivingposition is correct.- Then adjust your seat belt toprovide maximum protection.Adjusting your driving positionSit with your back firmly againstthe seatback.This is essential to ensure thatyourlumbarvertebraeareinthecorrect position.Adjust thedistancebetweentheseat and the pedals.Your seat should be as far back aspossiblewhilestill allowingyoutodepresstheclutchpedalfully.Theseatbackshouldbeadjustedso that your arms are slightly bentwhen you hold the steering wheel.Adjustthepositionofyourheadrestraint.For maximumsafety your headshouldbeascloseaspossibletothe head restraint.Adjust the height of the seat.This adjustment allows you toselect the seat position whichoffers you the best possible vision.Adjust the position of the steeringwheel.It is advisable not to tilt theseatback too far back toensure correct operation ofthe seat belts.Make sure the seatback iscorrectly locked in position.You are advised not to putanything on the floor in thedriver's footwell under heavybraking asit couldslide underthe pedals and prevent their safeoperation.Incorrectly adjusted seatbelts may cause injuries inthe event of an accident.Even pregnant womenshould wear a seat belt. The beltwill rewind itself.Guide the buckle to help theoperation.WWW.MANUALS.WS WWW.MANUALS.WS 1NU665~3_Clio_fra_Gl.qxdl3/08/0ll4:l3Page l.l3CLIOnu665-3C:\Documentum\Checkout\nu665-3_eng_T1.WIN 12/9/2001 11:03- page 21q1.13METHODSOFRESTRAINTINADDITIONTOTHEFRONTSEATBELTSThese are:OSeat belt pretensioners.OForce limiter.OAir bags for driver and frontpassenger.Thesesystemsareprovidedtoactindependently or together when thecar is subjected to a frontal impact.There are three possibilities,depending on the force of theimpact:- protection is provided by the beltonly;- the pretensioner is triggered torectifybelt positionandtakeupplay in the belt;- if the air bag and force limiter aretriggered, they provide additionalprotection in the event of the mostsevere impact.OSide air bags are provided toactivateintheeventofasevereside impact.Front seat belt pretensionersThis systemis only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on.If the car is subject to a severefrontal impact, piston 1immediatelyretracts the seat beltbuckle pulling the seat belt tightagainst the body and therebyimproving its efficiency. Have the entire restraintsystemcheckedfollowingan accident. No work whatsoever may beperformed on the pretensionersystem (computer, wiring, etc.). OnlyqualifiedRenaultNetworkpersonnel may work on thepretensioner systemto preventincorrect triggering of the systemwhich may cause injury. Theelectrictriggersystemmayonly be tested by a speciallytrainedtechnicianusingspecialequipment. Thesesystemsmust bereplacedeachtime they are activated but at thelatest after they have been inservicefor10years. Thisworkmust always be undertaken by aRenault Dealer.Theseat belt pretensionersandthe air bag operate together. Ifone of the systems has passed thedate when it is due for renewal, itwill alter the overall safetyprotection provided.Air bags for the driverand front passengerThese may be provided for thedriver and the front passenger.Thepresenceof thisequipment isindicated by the words Air bag onthe steering wheel and thedashboard,andalabelonthebaseof the windscreenor onthe sunvisor.WWW.MANUALS.WS WWW.MANUALS.WS 1NU665~3_Clio_fra_Gl.qxdl3/08/0ll4:l3Page l.l5CLIOnu665-3C:\Documentum\Checkout\nu665-3_eng_T1.WIN 12/9/2001 11:03- page 23q1.15METHODSOFRESTRAINTINADDITIONTOTHEFRONTSEATBELTS(continued)Air bags for the driverand front passenger(continued)Each air bag system consists of:- An air bag and gas generator fittedin the steering wheel for the driverand in the dashboard for the frontpassenger.- A computer for both systems,which includes the impactdetector and a monitor controllingthe electrical trigger system for thegas generator.- Asinglewarninglight 1ontheinstrument panel.OperationThe system is only operationalwhentheignitionis switchedon(ignition key in position M:Ignition on).If a severe frontal impact occurs, theair bag(s) inflate(s) in approximately30 milliseconds, cushioning theimpactofthedriver'sheadagainstthe steering wheel and the frontpassenger's head against thedashboard. The air bag then deflatesimmediately so that the passengersare not impeded in any way as theyget out of the car.The air bag system uses theprinciples of pyrotechnics. Thisexplains why, when the air baginflates, it will generate heat,produce smoke (this does not meanthat afire is about tostart) andmake a noise upon detonation. In asituation where an air bag isrequired, it must inflateimmediately andthis may causesomeminor,superficialgrazingtothe skin.FaultsWarninglight1illuminatesontheinstrument panel when the ignitionis turned on and then goes out aftera few seconds.If it doesnot illuminatewhentheignition is turned on or if it flashes,there is a fault in the system.Consult your Renault Dealer as soonas possible. Both the air bags and seat belts are integralparts of the same protection system. It is therefore essential that the seat belt is worn at all times. If seat belts arenot worn, the occupants are exposed to the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. The risk of minorsuperficial injuries occurring when the air bag is deployed may also increase, although such minor injuries arealways possible with air bags.The air bag does not offer protection against light or moderate frontal impacts, side or rear impacts or if the car turnsover.Air bags for driver and passenger Noworkormodificationwhatsoevermaybeperformedonanypartofthedriverandpassengerairbagsystem(computer, wiring, etc.) except by qualified Renault network personnel. To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid incorrect triggering of the system which may causeinjury, only qualified Renault Network personnel may work on the air bag system. As a safety precaution, have the air bag system checked if your car has been involved in an accident, is stolen orbroken into. Follow carefully the fitting instructions provided by the manufacturer of the restraint system. Always avoid dressing the child in bulky garments and do not place any objects between the child and the restraintsystem. The seat belt in the car must be taut so that the child's seat is held in position securely. Check the tension regularly. Never pass the belt under the arm or behind the back. The harness or belt should be taut and fitted to suit the child's stature. Never allow your child to stand up or kneel on the seats while the car is moving. Check that the child is in the correct position for the entire journey, particularly when he or she is asleep. Use the seat belts to hold the seat in position, even if it is not occupied. Otherwise, if an accident were to occur, it maybecome dislodged and pose a risk to other car occupants. Have the seat belts and restraint systems in use at the time of a serious accident checked. Never leave a child unsupervised in a car, even if he/she is in a restraint device. Activate the rear door locks (if your car is equipped with these). Make sure the child does not get out of the car at the side where there is traffic.
