SEAT BELTSAlways wear your seat belt whentravelling in your vehicle. You mustalso comply with the legislation ofthe particular country you are in.

Before driving off:- first ensure that your driving

position is correct- then adjust your seat belt to

provide maximum protection.

Incorrectly adjusted seatbelts may cause injuriesin the event of anaccident.

Even pregnant women shouldwear a seat belt. In thiseventuality, ensure that the lapbelt is not exerting too muchpressure on the abdomen but donot allow any slack.

Adjusting your driving position• Sit well back in your seat (having

removed your coat or jacket). This is essential to ensure yourback is positioned correctly.

• Adjusting the distance betweenthe seat and the pedals.Your seat should be as far back aspossible while still allowing youto be able to fully depress theclutch pedal. The seatback shouldbe adjusted so that your arms areslightly bent when you hold thesteering wheel.

• Adjusting the position of yourheadrest. For safety reasons, the top of yourhead should be in line with thetop of the headrest.

• Adjusting the height of the seat. This adjustment allows you toselect the seat position whichoffers you the best possiblevision.

• Adjust the position of the steeringwheel.

Adjusting the seat beltsSit with your back firmly against theseatback.Shoulder strap 1 should be as closeto the base of your neck as possiblebut not on it.The lap strap 2 should be worn flatover your thighs and against yourpelvis. The seat belt should be worn asclose to your body as possible;avoid wearing clothes that are toothick, or holding any objects thatcould obstruct the seat belt, etc.

RESTRAINT SYSTEMS IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTSThese are:■ Seat belt pretensioners

■ Force limiter.

■ Airbags for driver andpassenger.

These systems are designed to actindependently or together when thevehicle is subjected to a frontalimpact. There are three possibilities, depending on the force of theimpact:- protection is provided by the belt

only;- the pretensioner is triggered to

rectify belt position and take upplay in the belt;

- the airbag and the force limiter arealso triggered when there aresevere impacts.

■ Side airbags are provided toactivate in the event of severeside impacts.

Front seat belt pretensionersThe system is not operational untila few seconds after the ignition hasbeen switched on.In the event of a significant frontalimpact, a computer triggers the seatbelt buckle pretensioner igniter andsets a piston 1 in motion. Thispiston immediately retracts the seatbelt buckle, pulling the seat beltagainst the body and therebyimproving its efficiency.

• After an accident, havethe entire restraintsystem checked

• No operation whatsoever ispermitted on any part of thepretensioner system (computer, wiring) and the systemcomponents must not be reusedon any other vehicle, even ifidentical.

• Only qualified RENAULTpersonnel may work on thepretensioner system; otherwisethe system may triggeraccidentally and cause injury.

• Testing of the electric triggersystem may only be carried outby a specially trained technicianusing special equipment.

• When the vehicle is scrapped, contact your RENAULT Dealerfor disposal of the pretensionerand airbag gas generators.

RESTRAINT SYSTEMS IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)Force limiterAbove a certain severity of impact, this mechanism is used to limit theforce of the belt against the body sothat it is at an acceptable level.

Driver and passenger airbagsThese may be provided for thedriver and the front passenger. The presence of this equipment isindicated by the words “Airbag” onthe steering wheel and thedashboard, and a label on the baseof the windscreen or on the sunvisor.

Each airbag system consists of:- an airbag and gas generator fitted

on the steering wheel for thedriver and in the dashboard for thefront passenger;

- a computer for both systems,which includes the impact sensorand a monitor controlling theelectrical trigger system for the gasgenerator;

- A single warning light onthe instrument panel.

1.15

RESTRAINT SYSTEMS IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)OperationThe system waits a few secondsafter the ignition has been switchedon before becoming operational. If a severe frontal impact occurs, theairbag(s) inflate(s) rapidly, cushioning the impact of thedriver's head and chest against thesteering wheel and the frontpassenger's head against thedashboard. The airbag then deflatesimmediately so that the passengersare not impeded in any way whenthey get out of the vehicle. The passenger airbag system has, inaddition to the driver's airbagsystem, a front passenger airbagdeactivation indicator light on theinstrument panel. This warninglight is linked to the passengerairbag deactivation system throughthe ignition key.It lights up to indicate that thepassenger airbag will not be inflatedin the event of an impact (for moreinformation about the operation ofthis system, refer to the informationon Deactivating the front-passengerairbag in Section 1).

Operating faultsWarning light 1 lights up on theinstrument panel when the ignitionis turned on and then goes out aftera few seconds. If it does not light up when theignition is turned on, there is a faultin the system. If it lights up while you are driving, stop at once and switch off theignition.

If it still lights up after the ignitionhas been switched on again, there isa fault in the system. In this case, arear-facing child seat MUST NOT befitted to the front passenger seat.We recommend that no otherpassenger sits there. In both cases, consult yourRENAULT Dealer as soon aspossible.

The airbag system uses theprinciples of pyrotechnics. Therefore, when the airbaginflates, it will generate noise, heat and smoke upondetonation, this does not meanthat a fire is about to start. In asituation where an airbag isrequired, it will inflateimmediately and this may causesome minor, superficial grazingto the skin.

1.16

RESTRAINT SYSTEMS IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)All of the warnings below are given so that the airbag is not obstructed in any way when it is inflated and also to preventthe risk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when the airbag inflates.

The airbag is designed to complement the action of the seat belt. Both the airbags and seat belts are integral partsof the same protection system. It is therefore essential to wear the seat belt at all times. If seat belts are not worn, the occupants of the vehicle are exposed to the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. The risk ofminor superficial injuries occurring when the airbag is deployed may also increase, although such minor

injuries are always possible with airbags. The pretensioners and airbags are not always triggered if the vehicle should overturn or in the event of a rear impact, however severe. These systems may, however, be triggered by shocks to the vehicle underbody, e.g. from pavements, potholes, stones, etc.

Driver and passenger airbags• No work on or modification whatsoever may be carried out on the any part of the driver or passenger airbag system

(computer, wiring harness, etc.), (except by qualified RENAULT Network personnel).

• To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid accidental triggering of the system which may causeinjury, only qualified RENAULT Network personnel may work on the airbag system.

RESTRAINT SYSTEMS IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)

All the warnings below are given sothat the airbag is not obstructed inany way when it is inflated and alsoto prevent the risk of seriousinjuries caused by items which maybe dislodged when the airbaginflates.

Warnings concerning the driver’s airbag• Do not adjust the steering wheel or the cushion.• Do not cover the steering wheel cushion.

• Do not attach any objects (badge, logo, clock, telephone holder, etc.) to thesteering wheel cushion.

• The steering wheel must not be removed (except by qualified personnelfrom the RENAULT network).

• Do not sit too close to the steering wheel. Sit with your arms slightly bent(see the information on Adjusting your driving position in Section 1). Thiswill allow sufficient space for the airbag to deploy correctly and be fullyeffective.

Warnings for passenger airbag: location A• Do not attach or glue any objects (badges, logo, clock, telephone holder,

etc.) onto the front passenger side of the dashboard.• Nothing should be placed between the dashboard and the passenger (pet,

umbrella, walking stick, parcels, etc.).• The passenger must not put his or her feet on the dashboard or seat as there

is a risk that serious injuries may be sustained. As a general rule, keep allparts of the body (knees, hands, head, etc.) well away from the dashboard.

• You should reactivate the airbag as soon as you remove the child seat fromthe front passenger seat to ensure the protection of the front passenger inthe event of an impact.

FITTING A REAR-FACING CHILD SEAT TO THE PASSENGER SEAT ISPROHIBITED UNLESS THE METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITIONTO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BELT HAVE BEEN DEACTIVATED

(Refer to the information on Deactivatingthe front-passenger airbag in Section 1).

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELT (continued)Side airbagsThis airbag may be fitted to the frontseats and is deployed at the sides ofthe seats (door side) to protect theoccupants in the event of a severeside impact.

These airbags operatethrough slits in the frontbackrests (door side):never insert any objects

in these slits.

Warnings concerning theside airbag• Fitting seat covers: seats

equipped with an airbagrequire covers specificallydesigned for your vehicle.Contact your RENAULT Dealerto find out if these covers may bepurchased from RENAULToutlets. The use of any coversother than those designed foryour vehicle (and includingthose designed for anothervehicle) may affect the operationof the airbags and reduce yourprotection.

• Do not place any accessories, objects or even pets between theseatback, the door and theinternal fittings. Do not cover theseatback with any items such asclothes or accessories. This mayprevent the airbag from operatingcorrectly or cause injury whenthe airbag is deployed.

• No work or modificationwhatsoever may be carried outon the seat and the internalfittings, except by qualifiedRENAULT Network personnel.

The airbag system uses theprinciples of pyrotechnics. Therefore, when the airbag inflates,it will generate noise, heat andsmoke upon detonation, this doesnot mean that a fire is about to start. In a situation where an airbag isrequired, it will inflateimmediately and this may causesome minor, superficial grazing tothe skin.

CHILD SAFETYIn all countries there are regulationsgoverning the use of restraints forchildren and babies. In Europe children under 10 yearsof age(1) must be seated in anapproved safety device which issuitable for their weight and size. The driver is responsible forensuring that this equipment isused correctly.Child restraints for which typeapproval was obtained after January1992 offer a level of safety muchgreater than for restraints with typeapproval before that date.It is therefore advisable to select achild restraint that complies withEuropean regulation ECE 44.Restraints that comply with thislegislation must be marked with anorange label bearing the letter Efollowed by a number (whichstands for the country where it istype approved) and the year inwhich the type approval wasgranted.Refer to the “Child safetyequipment” booklet available fromthe RENAULT Network to choosethe seat suited to your child andrecommended for your vehicle.

Remember that a collision at 30 mph(50 km/h) is the same as falling adistance of 10 metres. Expressed inother terms, transporting a childwithout a restraint is the equivalent ofallowing him or her to play on afourth-floor balcony without railings.

Under no circumstancesshould babies or childrenbe allowed to travel sittingon the knees of another

passenger in the vehicle. If a frontal impact occurs at 30 mph(50 km/h) a child weighing 30 kgwill be transformed into a missileequivalent to one tonne: you willfind it impossible to hold the child, even if you yourself are wearing abelt. It is particularly dangerous to putthe belt round your child when heor she is sitting on your lap. Neveruse the belt for more than oneperson at the same time.

There are some passenger seats onwhich the installation of child seatsis forbidden. To find the authorised seats andtypes of child seats that can beinstalled in each of the authorisedseats, refer to the table in thefollowing pages. Before installing a child seat in thefront seat (if installation ispermitted)If fitted to the passenger seat, carryout the following adjustments:- move the passenger seat as far

back as possible,- set the seatback to its fully upright

position,- raise the seat base as far as

possible,- raise the headrest to its highest

setting,- move the seat belt height control

to the low position.

(1) You must always comply with thelaws of the country in which you aretravelling. They may be different tothe guidelines in this handbook.

CHILD SAFETY (continued)The right choiceThe safety of your children is alsoyour responsibility. To ensure that your child has themaximum possible protection, werecommend that you use seatsapproved by the RENAULTNetwork. If your vehicle is fitted with anIsofix system you should use anIsofix seat (see the Isofix child seatattachment system information inSection 1).Restraint systems for all thecategories are available. Thesesystems have been developed inconsultation with themanufacturers and have been testedin RENAULT vehicles.Contact your RENAULT Dealer andask him to help you install it.

Categories 0 and 0+ (from 0 to13 kg)A child's neck is very susceptible toinjury up to the age of two.It is preferable to put your child intoa rear facing enclosing shell seat. This position enhances safety.

Category 1 (from 9 to 18 kg)Between the ages of 2 and 4, achild's pelvis is not fully developed.Restraints using the vehicle'sthree-point belts are not adequateand there is also a risk that the childwill sustain abdominal injuries inthe event of a frontal impact. It istherefore necessary to use anenclosing seat which holds thechild using a harness or shockabsorbing pad.

To avoid any risk to your safety, we recommend that you useRENAULT approved accessories because they are designed for yourvehicle and are the only accessories for which RENAULT willprovide a warranty.

CHILD SAFETY (continued)

Category 2 (15 to 25 kg) andcategory 3 (22 to 36 kg)For correctly maintaining the pelvisof a child under 10 years, a heightunder 1.36 m and a weight of lessthan 36 kg, it is preferable to use araised seat with belt guides thatensure that the three-point belt liesflat over the child's thighs.

A booster seat with aheight-adjustable seatback and abelt guide are recommended as thiswill allow the belt to be worn asclose to the base of the neck aspossible but not on it.If a booster seat without a seatbackis used, the vehicle's headrest willhave to be adjusted to suit thechild's stature; the upper edge of theheadrest must be at the same heightas the top of the child's head andshould never be lower than in linewith the child's eyes.

We recommend that you removethe headrest and put it in theboot to facilitate fitting certaintypes of child seat.

The standard classifies childrestraints in five categories:Category 0 : 0 to 10 kgCategory 0+: 0 to 13 kgCategory 1 : 9 to 18 kgCategory 2 : 15 to 25 kgCategory 3 : 22 to 36 kg

as they may cause the catalyticconverter to overheat and thusreduce its efficiency, or destroy itand cause heat damage to thevehicle.

If you notice any of the above faults, have the necessary repairs carriedout as soon as possible by yourRENAULT Dealer.

These faults may be avoided bytaking your vehicle regularly toyour RENAULT Dealer at theintervals specified in your servicingbooklet.

Starting faultsTo avoid damaging the catalyticconverter, do not keep trying to startthe engine (using the start button, orby pushing or towing the vehicle)without having identified andcorrected the starting fault. If the fault cannot be identified, donot continue to try and start theengine, call a RENAULT Dealer.

Do not park the vehicle orrun the engine in locationswhere combustiblesubstances or materials

such as grass or leaves can comeinto contact with a hot exhaustsystem.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF DIESEL VERSIONSDiesel engine speedDiesel engines are fitted withinjection equipment incorporating amechanical regulator whichprevents overrevving of the engineirrespective of the gear in use.

Running out of fuelYou may start the engine normallyafter filling the tank if it had beencompletely emptied and providedthat the battery is well-charged.However, if the engine fails to startafter a few seconds and severalattempts, contact a RENAULTDealer.

Precautions to be taken inwinterTo avoid any damage in icy weather:• Ensure that the battery is always

fully charged.• Always keep the fuel tank

relatively full to avoid watervapour condensing in it andaccumulating at the bottom of thetank.

Do not park the vehicle or runthe engine in locations wherecombustible substances ormaterials such as grass or

leaves can come into contact with ahot exhaust system.

ADVICE ON ANTI-POLLUTION FUEL ECONOMY AND DRIVINGRENAULT is actively striving toreduce pollutant exhaust gasemissions and to save energy.By virtue of its design, moderatefuel consumption and initialsettings, your RENAULT conformsto current anti-pollution standards.Technical design, however, cannotachieve all. The fuel consumptionof your vehicle and the level ofpollutant exhaust gas emissions arevery much within your control.Make sure that your vehicle ismaintained correctly, and is drivencarefully.

MaintenanceIt should be noted that failure torespect anti-pollution standardsmay lead to legal action being takenagainst the vehicle owner. Inaddition, replacing engine, fuelsupply system and exhaustcomponents with parts other thanthose originally recommended bythe manufacturer may alter yourvehicle so that it no longer complieswith anti-pollution standards.Have your vehicle checked andadjusted by your RENAULT Dealerin accordance with the instructionsin the vehicle’s warranty andservicing booklet.Your RENAULT Dealer has all theequipment necessary for ensuringthat your vehicle is maintained toits original standard.Always remember that the emissionof pollutant fumes is directly linkedto fuel consumption.

Engine adjustments• Ignition: this does not require any

adjustment.

• Spark plugs: optimum conditionsof use, performance and outputdemand that the specificationslaid down by our design office berigorously adhered to.If the spark plugs have to bechanged, use the make, type andgap specified for your vehicle'sengine. Contact your RENAULTDealer for this information.

• Idling speed: this does not requireany adjustment.

• Air filter, diesel filter: a cloggedelement reduces output and mustbe replaced.

• Injection pump setting: it must beset to the recommended values.

ADVICE ON ANTIPOLLUTION, FUEL ECONOMY AND DRIVING (continued)Exhaust gas monitorThe exhaust gas monitor will detectany malfunctioning of the vehicle'sexhaust gas anti-pollution system. If this system malfunctions, toxicsubstances may be released into theatmosphere or mechanical damagemay occur.

This warning light on theinstrument panel willindicate if there are any

faults on the system:This comes on when the ignition isswitched on and goes out after threeseconds.- If it comes on continuously,

contact your RENAULT Dealer assoon as possible.

- If it flashes, reduce the enginespeed until the light stopsflashing. Consult your RENAULTDealer as soon as possible.

Driving• Drive carefully for the first few

miles until the engine reaches itsnormal operating temperature, rather than let it warm up whilethe vehicle is stopped.

• Speed is expensive.• “Sporty” driving uses a lot of fuel:

drive with a “light right foot”.

• Study the road ahead so that youare able to brake as little aspossible, it can be sufficient justto lift off the accelerator.

• Avoid sharp acceleration.• Do not over-rev the engine in the

intermediate gears. Always usethe highest gear possible withoutlabouring the engine.

• Do not try to maintain the samespeed up a hill, accelerate nomore than you would on the level.Keep your foot in the sameposition on the accelerator pedal.

• Double declutching andaccelerating before switching offare superfluous actions inmodern vehicles.

• Bad weather, flooded roadsDo not drive throughfloods if the depth ofwater is above thelower edge of thewheel rims.

ADVICE ON ANTIPOLLUTION, FUEL ECONOMY AND DRIVING (continued)

General hints• Electricity is “fuel”; switch off all

the electrical components whichare not really needed. However, keep the lights onwhen visibility is poor.

• Use the air vents. Driving with thewindows open will increase fuelconsumption by 4% at a speed of60 mph (100 km/h).

• For vehicles fitted with airconditioning, this increases fuelconsumption, especially in urbandriving; switch off the systemwhen it is not needed.

• Avoid filling to the brim with fuelat the filling station to preventany overflow.

• Do not leave an empty roof rackfitted to the vehicle.

• It is better to fit a trailer for bulkyobjects.

• When towing a caravan, fit a winddeflector and adjust it carefully.

• Avoid using the vehicle fordoor-to-door journeys (shortjourneys, with long stopsin-between) because in theseconditions, the engine neverreaches it ideal temperature. Tryto group your journeys.

TyresIncreased fuel consumption couldbe the result of:• insufficient pressure,• using non-recommended tyres.

ENVIRONMENTYour vehicle has been designedwith the aim of caring for theenvironment.• Most versions are equipped with

an anti-pollution systemincluding a catalytic converter, alambda sensor and an activecarbon filter (the latter preventsvapour from the petrol tank beingreleased into the open air.)

• These vehicles run on unleadedfuel only.

• 87% of the parts in your vehiclecan be recycled and it alreadycontains recycled materials.

• 95% of the plastic components inyour vehicle are marked with asymbol which allows theprincipal component material tobe identified. These markingsmean that parts removed can besorted more easily, thusoptimising the recyclability ofeach of them.

In addition, your vehicle meets therequirements of Europeanlegislation relating toenvironmental protection.

Make your contribution towardsprotection of the environment too!Do not dispose of parts replaced inthe course of routine vehiclemaintenance (battery, oil filter, airfilter, etc.) and oil containers (emptyor full of used oil, etc.) withhousehold waste.Dispose of them through specialistorganisations. In all cases, complywith local bye-laws.

PROACTIVE AUTOMATIC GEARBOX (continued)Driving forwardsSelect position D. In the majority oftraffic conditions, you will not haveto touch the gear selector leveragain: the gear changing will takeplace automatically at the right timeand at the most suitable enginespeed because the automatic systemtakes into account the vehicle loadand road surface and adjusts itselfto the particular driving style youhave chosen.

Accelerating and overtakingFully and firmly depress theaccelerator pedal (or even take yourfoot off the accelerator and depressit again firmly as far as it will go).

The speed that you depress thepedal will activate the “kickdown”switch to obtain maximumperformance.

Special circumstances• Snow position: If you are starting

off on ground where you arelikely to skid (snow, mud, etc.),press switch C. Indicator light Fwill come on.

Once these driving conditions nolonger apply, press switch Cagain to deselect the position, theoperating indicator light will goout.

• In hilly or mountainous areas: Ifyou cannot remain in 4th gearbecause of the road surface andthe number of bends, we wouldadvise you to select D3 (bypressing button B, with the gearlever in position D), or even 2(2nd gear hold), which willprevent shifting to higher gearsthan the one selected. Likewise, ifposition 1 is selected, the vehiclewill remain in 1st gear and a highlevel of engine braking isretained. If you are travelling downhill for along way, we would advise you toplace the lever in D3 or 2 (oreven 1) to obtain the mostefficient engine braking and torelieve the brakes.

• In very cold weather, start theengine and wait a few secondsbefore moving the selector leverfrom position P or N and selectingD or R to prevent the enginestalling.

2.14

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS)Under heavy braking, the systemhas two principal aims, to reducethe stopping distance and keep yourvehicle under control. However, there is a risk that roadholding anddirectional control may be lost andthe wheels may lock under braking, depending on the nature of theground, weather conditions andyour reactions. The Anti-lockBraking System (ABS) has beendesigned to combat this danger. The safety enhancement is that thebrake control system prevents thewheels from locking, even if thebrakes are applied too sharply, andallows the vehicle to be steered andthus its direction to be controlled.Under these circumstances it isquite possible for the driver to steerthe vehicle and to avoid an obstaclewhilst at the same time applying thebrake. This system also allows youto optimise stopping distances, especially when roadholdingbecomes difficult (wet or slipperyroads, variable road surfaces).

Although this system allows you tooptimise stopping distances, theABS system does not allow you toincrease vehicle performance, which is physically linked to thelocal conditions of tyre / roadadhesion. It is still essential to follow the rulesof good driving practice (such asdriving at a safe distance from thevehicle in front). The fact that thevehicle’s safety has been increasedshould not encourage you to takerisks. You will feel pulsing through thebrake pedal when the system hasbeen activated. These tangible signswill warn you that the adhesionbetween the tyres and the groundhas reached its limit and enable youto adapt your driving style to suitthe road conditions.

Operating faultsTwo possible situations may occur:

1 - The warning light on

the instrument panel is lit.Braking is still effective, butwithout support from the ABSsystem. Contact a RENAULTDealer as soon as possible.

2 - The and

warning lights

on the instrument panelare lit.

This indicates that both thebraking system and the ABSsystem are faulty. Your brakingsystems are only partiallyoperational. However, it isdangerous to brake suddenlyand it is essential to stopimmediately, as soon as trafficconditions allow. Call aRENAULT Dealer.

The braking modulation provided by the ABS is independent of the effortapplied to the brake pedal. In an emergency, apply firm and continuouspressure to the brake pedal There is no need to pump it repeatedly.

Air recirculation allows the desiredlevel of comfort to be achieved asquickly as possible. This starts or stops air recirculation. In this position, air is taken frominside the passenger compartmentand is recirculated withoutadmitting external air.

Prolonged use of isolation modemay mist the windows slightly orcause odours due to the air notbeing renewed. It is advisable therefore to return tonormal operation (fresh air) byadjusting control C when you havepassed through the polluted area.

When the air conditioningsystem is operating, allwindows must be closedfor maximum efficiency.

Air conditioning controlsControl D switches the airconditioning system on and off.The system cannot be switched onif control C is set to 0.

Use the air conditioning systemoccasionally in winter to keep thesystem in good working order.

Do not worry about any waterwhich may appear from underneaththe car as this results fromcondensation.

The air conditioning system:• lowers the temperature inside the

passenger compartment,especially in hot weather, whendriving in traffic or when thevehicle has been parked in thesun;

• reduces the humidity of the airblown into the passengercompartment (prevents misting).

Fuel consumption increases whenthe air conditioning system is beingused. (Switch it off when it is notrequired.)

Note: the air conditioning may beused in all conditions but does notoperate when the externaltemperature is low.

• Button D not activated (indicatorlight E off)The air conditioning is notoperating. The heating and ventilationcontrols are the same as a vehiclewithout air conditioning.

HEATING - VENTILATION - AIR CONDITIONING (continued)

Temporary isolation of thepassenger compartmentNormal operation of the heating andventilation system is obtained usingexternal air.Air recirculation allows the externalatmosphere to be isolated (drivingin polluted areas). To select isolation mode, presscontrol D.

Air recycling allows the desiredtemperature to be achieved asquickly as possible. This starts or stops air recycling.Operating indicator light E lights upwhen the function is operational. Inthis position the air is taken frominside the passenger compartmentand is recycled without admittingexternal air.

Prolonged use of this position(recycled air) may mist or ice up thewindows slightly or cause odoursdue to the air not being renewed. It is therefore advisable to return tonormal operation (external air) bypressing button D when you havepassed through the polluted area.

HEATING - VENTILATION - AIR CONDITIONING (continued)

Air conditioning controlsControl F switches the airconditioning system on and off.The system cannot be switched on ifcontrol C is set to 0.Use the air conditioning systemoccasionally in winter to keep thesystem in good working order.Do not worry about water under thevehicle: it is just condensation.

Using the air conditioning systemallows you to:• lower the internal passenger

compartment temperature,especially in hot weather, whendriving in traffic or when thevehicle has been parked in thesun;

• reduce the humidity of the airblown inside the passengercompartment (prevents misting).

Fuel consumption increases whenthe air conditioning system is beingused. (Switch it off when it is notrequired.)

Note: the air conditioning may beused in all conditions but does notoperate when the externaltemperature is low.

• Button F not pressed (indicatorlight G not lit)The air conditioning is notoperating.Heating and ventilation aretherefore identical to that of avehicle without air conditioning.

• Button F pressed (indicator lightG is on)The air conditioning is operating.

When the airconditioning system isoperating, all windowsmust be closed for

maximum efficiency. If there is an operating fault, contact your RENAULT Dealer.Do not open the refrigerationcircuit: this may cause injury toyour eyes or skin.

BODYWORK MAINTENANCEProtection against the effects ofcorrosive agentsAlthough your vehicle has beentreated with very effectiveanti-corrosion products, itnevertheless remains subject to theeffects of:

• corrosives in the atmosphere- atmospheric pollution (urban

and industrial areas).- saline atmosphere (near the sea,

particularly in hot weather),- seasonal and damp climatic

conditions, (e.g.: road salt inwinter, water from roadcleaners, etc.).

• abrasivesairborne dust and sand, mud, road chippings thrown up byother vehicles.

• minor impacts

You should take a number of minorprecautions in order to safeguardyour vehicle against such risks andnot to lose the benefit of yourvehicle's anti-corrosion protection.

You should not• Wash the vehicle in bright

sunlight or freezing temperatures.• Scrape off mud or dirt without

pre-wetting.• Allow dirt to accumulate.• Allow rust to form following

minor impacts.• Use solvents not approved by

RENAULT's Technical Departmentto remove stains as this coulddamage the paintwork.

• Drive frequently in snow ormuddy conditions withoutperiodically washing the vehicle, particularly under the wheelarches and body.

• Degrease or clean mechanicalcomponents (e.g. enginecompartment), underneath thebodywork, parts with hinges (e.g.inside the fuel tank flap) andpainted external plastic fittings(e.g. bumpers) using pressurecleaning apparatus or using sprayproducts not approved byRENAULT's Technical Department. If adequate precautions are nottaken, this could give rise tocorrosion or operational faults.

CHANGING A WHEEL

Park the car on firm, levelground which is notslippery (e.g. avoid tiledfloors), placing a plank

under the jack if necessary. Switchon the hazard warning lights.Apply the handbrake and select agear (first or reverse, or position Pfor automatic transmission).Ask all the passengers to leave thevehicle and keep them away fromthe traffic.

Remove the hubcap (see theinformation on hubcaps).Loosen the nuts using wheelbrace 1,pressing down.Present the jack horizontally, thejack head must slide under thelower section of the body, as close aspossible to the wheel concerned.Crank up the jack by hand at first toalign the base plate (which shouldbe inclined further inwards than thejack head). Place a plank of woodunder the base plate if on softground.

Insert end 2 of the wheelbrace intojack 3 and turn it several times to liftthe wheel off the ground:Remove the bolts.Take off the wheel.Position the emergency spare wheelon the hub and turn it so that theholes in the wheel and the hub arein alignment.Tighten the bolts and lower the jack. With the wheels on the ground, tighten the bolts as much aspossible and get a RENAULT Dealerto check the tightness of the bolts assoon as possible (tightening torque105 Nm).

If you have a puncture, replace the wheel as soonas possible.A tyre which has been

punctured should always beinspected (and repaired ifpossible) by a specialist.

TYRESTyre and wheel safetyThe tyres are the only contactbetween the vehicle and the road, soit is essential to keep them in goodcondition. You must make sure that your tyresconform to local road regulations.

When they need to bereplaced, only tyres ofthe same make, size, type and profile should

be used.Tyres fitted to the vehicle shouldeither be identical to those fittedoriginally or conform to thoserecommended by yourRENAULT Dealer.

Maintaining the tyresThe tyres must be in good conditionand the tread form must havesufficient depth. Tyres approved byRENAULT's Technical Departmenthave wear warning strips 1 in theform of indicators moulded into thetread at several points.

When the tyre tread has beeneroded to the level of the warningstrips, they become visible 2: it isthen necessary to replace your tyresbecause the tread profile is nolonger 1.6 mm deep and this causespoor road holding on wet roads. An overloaded vehicle, longjourneys by motorway, particularlyin very hot weather, or continualdriving on poorly surfaced minorroads will lead to more rapid tyrewear and affect safety.

Incidents which occurwhen driving, such asstriking the kerb, maydamage the tyres and

rims and could lead tomisalignment of the front or rearaxle geometry. In this case, havethe condition of these checkedby a RENAULT Dealer.

TYRES (continued)Tyre pressuresIt is important to respect inflationpressure (including that of the sparewheel), it must be checked at leastonce a month and also before eachlong journey (refer to the Section ontyre inflation pressure at thebeginning of the handbook).

Incorrect tyre pressureslead to abnormal tyrewear and unusually hotrunning, factors which

may seriously affect safety andlead to:- poor road holding,- the risk of blow-outs or of

throwing a tread at high speed.Tyre pressures depend on theload and the driving speed.Adjust the pressures accordingto the conditions of use. (Refer tothe tyre pressures section.)

Pressures should be checked whenthe tyres are cold; ignore higherpressures which may be reached inwarm weather or following a fastjourney. If tyre pressures cannot be checkedwhen the tyres are cold, assume anincrease of 0.2 to 0.3 bar.

Never deflate a hot tyre.

Note: a label (depending on countryor model) fixed to the edge or frameof the driver's door gives therecommended tyre pressures.

Changing wheels aroundThis practice is not recommended.

Emergency spare wheelRefer to the information on theemergency spare wheel andinstructions on how to change awheel in Section 5.

Fitting new tyres

For safety reasons, thisoperation must becarried out by aspecialist.

Fitting different tyres maychange your vehicle as follows:- It may mean that your vehicle

no longer conforms to currentregulations.

- It may change the way ithandles when cornering.

- It may cause the steering to beheavy.

- It may cause tyre noise.- It may affect the use of snow

chains.

TYRES (continued)Use in winter• Snow chains

For safety reasons, fitting snowchains to the rear axle is strictlyforbidden.Chains must not be fitted to tyreswhich are larger than thoseoriginally fitted to the vehicle.

Chains may only be fittedto tyres of the same sizeas those originally fittedto your vehicle.

• “Snow” or “Winter” tyresWe would recommend that thesebe fitted to all four wheels toensure that your vehicle retainsmaximum road holding.

Note: we would point out thatthese tyres may sometimes have:- a specific direction of rotation.- a maximum speed index which

may be lower than themaximum speed of yourvehicle.

• Studded tyresThis type of equipment may onlybe used for a limited period andas laid down by local legislation. It is necessary to observe thespeed specified by currentlegislation. These tyres may be fitted to thetwo front wheels as a minimum.

In all cases, we would recommendthat you contact your RENAULTDealer who will be able to adviseyou on the choice of equipmentwhich is most suitable for yourvehicle.

BATTERY: breakdownTo avoid all risk of sparks:- Ensure that all electrical

equipment are switched off beforedisconnecting or reconnecting thebattery.

- When charging, stop the chargerbefore connecting ordisconnecting the battery.

- Do not place metal objects on thebattery to avoid creating a shortcircuit between the terminals.

Connecting a battery chargerWith the engine off, it is essential todisconnect the wires connected toboth battery terminals, starting withthe negative terminal.Do not disconnect the battery whenthe engine is running. Follow theinstructions for use given by themanufacturer of the battery chargeryou are using.

Only a well-charged and well-maintained battery will have a longand useful life and enable you tostart the vehicle’s engine normally. The battery must be kept clean anddry.Have the battery's charge statuschecked regularly:• Especially if you use your vehicle

for short journeys or for frequentdriving in town.

• When the external temperaturedrops (in winter), the chargedecreases. In winter, only useelectrical equipment which isreally necessary.

• Finally, you should understandthat the charge decreasesnaturally as a result of certainpermanent consumers such as:the clock, After-Sales accessories, etc.

When many accessories are fitted tothe vehicle, have them connected to+ after ignition feed. In this case, itis advisable to have your vehiclefitted with a battery which has anincreased capacity. Contact yourRENAULT Dealer. If your vehicle is to be left stationaryfor a relatively long time, disconnect the battery or have itrecharged regularly, in particularduring cold weather. Theequipment with a memory, radioand trip computer and warningsystem will then have to bereprogrammed. The battery must bestored in a cool dry place, protectedfrom frost.

Special procedures maybe required to chargesome batteries. Contactyour RENAULT Dealer.

Avoid all risk of sparks whichmay cause an immediateexplosion and charge the batteryin a well-ventilated area.Risk of serious injury.

BATTERY: breakdown (continued)Starting the vehicle using thebattery from another vehicleProceed as follows when startingyour vehicle from another vehicle’sbattery:obtain the appropriate leads (largecross-section) from a RENAULTDealer, or if you already have jumpleads, check that they are in perfectcondition. The two batteries must have anidentical voltage: 12 volts.Ensure that there is no risk ofcontact between the two vehicles(risk of short circuiting when thepositive terminals are connected)and that the discharged battery isproperly connected. Switch off yourvehicle ignition.Start the engine of the vehiclesupplying the current and run it atan intermediate engine speed.

Attach positive cable (+) A to the (+)terminal 1 of the discharged battery, then to the (+) terminal 2 of thebattery supplying the current.Attach negative cable (–) B to the (–)terminal 3 of the battery supplyingthe current and then to the (–)terminal 4 of the discharged battery.

Check that there is no contactbetween cables A and B and thatcable A (+) is not touching anymetal parts on the vehicle which issupplying the current.Start the engine as normal. As soonas it starts, disconnect cables A andB in reverse order (4-3-2-1).

Handle the battery withcare as it containssulphuric acid whichmust not come into

contact with the eyes or skin. If itdoes, wash the affected area withplenty of cold water.Ensure that naked flames,red-hot objects and sparks do notcome into contact with thebattery as there is a risk ofexplosion.Take care when working in theengine compartment as theengine cooling fan may cut in atany moment without warning.
