HALF of the children in some areas of Glasgow are grow-ing up in poverty according to new figures released this week.

A child poverty map, created by the End Child Poverty campaign, reveals a huge divide between rich and poor districts.

Based on Council level wards, Calton has one the highest levels in Scotland with 49% of its children growing up and living in poverty.

Other parts of Glasgow are badly affected with Spring-burn (51%), Canal (42%), East Centre (42%) and Drum-chapel/Anniesland (40%) all registering high levels.

Local Councillor Yvonne Kucuk, who represents the Calton Ward, reacted to the news. She said:

“The news that so many children in the East End are growing up in poverty is shocking in a wealthy coun-try. The UK Government’s policies such as slashing

the real value of benefits and tax credits for low-paid families with children will make things much worse in the coming year.

“The average wage in the area is less than £18,000 a year, and falling. We need to see urgent action by both of Scotland’s Governments on improving access to affordable childcare, more apprenticeships and college places for local people, introducing a living wage in more parts of the economy, action to cut energy bills given soaring fuel poverty, and creating better-paying skilled jobs.”

The survey by the End Child Poverty campaign says one in five children in the UK are living below the bread-line. And experts are pre-dicting the number will rise from 400,000 to 800,000 by 2020 because of the govern-ment’s benefit cuts.

Enver Solomon, chair of the End Child Poverty cam-paign said:

“Far too many children whose parents are strug-gling to make a living are having to go hungry and miss out on the essentials of a decent childhood that all young people should be entitled to.

“The huge disparities that exist across the country

have become more en-trenched and are now an en-during reality as many more children are set to become trapped in long term poverty and disadvantage.”

Barnardo’s Chief Executive Anne Marie Carrie added: “Today’s statistics mask the individual stories of mil-

lions of children, whose life chances are being compro-mised by our nation’s failure to tackle child poverty effectively.”

A family is classed as being in poverty if its income is 60% or below the national average household income of £359 a week.

Glasgow pilot project helping to improve health and confidenceA pilot project to bring planning and health together to improve the lives of people in the East End of the city is to be expanded across Glasgow. Glasgow City Council’s Executive Committee today (18 April) approved the promotion and further development of the Equally Well test site project. The Glasgow City Equally Well project looked at how the planning system can contribute to health and wellbeing and how the lessons learned in one part of the city could influence future policy across the local authority. Bailie Liz Cameron, Executive Member for Jobs and the Economy, said: “It is well documented that there is a very strong link between where people live and their health.“Glasgow has been very successful in building hundreds of new quality homes over the last decade and regenerating many of our neighbourhoods and communities. Through this work we have great experience in our city of bringing planners and local communities together to provide neighbourhoods and housing that people want to live in.“Equally Well built on these connections. I am delighted therefore that the experience and new practices which have come out of the Equally Well work will now inform the basis of

the city’s new local development plan.” The Equally Well pilot was one of eight test sites across Scotland. Equally Well is the Scottish Government’s action plan for tackling health inequalities. Two out of the eight were based in Glasgow. The Glasgow City Equally Well test site built on the work began in the East End Local Development Strategy (EELDS). Two new programmes have been developed during the pilot – the Healthy Sustainable Neighbourhoods (HSN) Model and Healthy Sustainable Me (HSMe). The pilot started by providing training and resources to help planners and health professionals engage with local communities and to build health and wellbeing outcomes into local planning. A model of a Health Sustainable Neighbourhood was developed with communities to understand the impact that place has, and the components that are needed to make neighbourhoods healthier. A computer based took kit assisted with this to help people to visualise how place impacts on wellbeing. For example it allowed local people to use the toolkit to imagine what would be best for a gap site in their area – whether to green it or

what type of building would be best for improving the look of a neighbourhood. A further community development course called Healthy Sustainable Me aimed to support locals to develop confidence and get more involved in community work. In the East End, one single mother who took part in the Healthy Sustainable Me course helped to building confidence that connected her to courses in her community. She is now gone back to college as a mature student. Healthy Sustainable Me also employed a community connector which helped to see issues within a community and find a fix within the community. For example a woman who was isolated at home but could drive was connected up with people in their community who needed someone to drive them to hospital appointments. It meant that the woman now is meeting people and getting out which is helping her mental health and wellbeing. The Scottish Government has now recommended that the tools created in the Glasgow Equally Well pilot should be offered to other areas of Scotland. Work is now on-going to further develop the tools to allow this to happen.

BUILDING work has begun on a brand new state of the art Pri-mary School in the East End. The new school will be built on the football pitches beside the current school, originally built in 1939. Construction has been started by City Building, who won the £16m contract for the Gallowhill Primary and Early Years Campus. The funding is a mixture of Glasgow City Council and Scottish Government money with £12.1m coming from the council and £3.8m from the Scottish Futures Trust. 17 classrooms and a pur-pose built gym will be part of the new build. East End politicians welcomed the start of the works. Glasgow East MP Margaret Curran said: “I am delighted that we are seeing this development. I have campaigned for many years to get an improved school and to fi-nally see the work begin is great. “Parents, pupils and staff will really benefit from this invest-ment from the council and I look forward to seeing the new school get fully utilised.” Last December, Garrowhill was announced to be included in the first year of the Council’s 5 year £250m pledge to rebuild or refurbish every primary school in Glasgow. 59 nursery, primary and Additional Support for Learning schools that will benefit from in-vestment programme to improve

the education estate. Baillieston Councillor Jim Cole-man said: “The investment that we are seeing is part of the Glasgow Labour Council’s plans to improve the educational opportunities for our young people. “The decision to invest in Gar-rowhill first has to be welcomed and the kids will benefit for years to come. I am sure that pupils, staff and parents will have a school that everyone will be proud of.” Shettleston MSP John Mason said: “Today is a major milestone for the Garrowhill community. I was first elected as a Councillor for the Garrowhill ward in 1998 and since then we have been seeking improvements to the school buildings. So today is a real step forward for the people of Garrowhill. “Of course, whilst today is a day of celebration for Garrowhill, I am all too aware that there are many other primary schools in the constituency – some in even worse condition than Garrowhill – that still require upgrading.” Current Garrowhill Primary head teacher Richard Buchan also wel-comed the new build. He said: “It is really quite a historic day for us. “We had sports day on the playing fields for the last time

ever last Friday. “The pupils will be able to watch it from the school as it emerges from the ground. “It will have larger classrooms and lots of space and will be very bright and airy.” A Glasgow City Council spokes-woman said: “The council has invested over £550million on school buildings over the past decade and the new campuses built are having a major impact on the communities they serve. “Glasgow is committed to teaching our young people in high-quality modern schools. “That’s why we are planning to invest a further £250million to rebuild or refurbish every primary as well as every nursery or Addi-tional Support for Learning school over the next five years. Work is already beginning this year at 59 buildings across the city.”

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

CHARITIES and local causes were the main beneficiar-ies from the fundraising efforts of thousands of fun runners in the annual ng5k this month. The event is now a well established event in north Glasgow and proved as popular as ever with run-ners, walkers and pram pushers all turning up despite the rain to take part in the 5k.Many participants came dressed in beachwear, recognising the ‘seaside’ theme of this year’s event. Patricia Ferguson MSP was one of thousands of lo-cal residents to take part in the event. The Maryhill and Springburn MSP was joined by local councillors Chris Kelly and Martin Rhodes Speaking after the 5k Patricia Ferguson said: “I was pleased to be able to take part in the 5k again this year. Since its launch in 2006 the number of partici-pants has trebled and it was great to see so many local people join in, despite the rainy weather. “The NG5k is important in encouraging local residents to participate in physical activity, and with free entry open to everyone from serious runners to parents pushing prams it is truly an event for the whole com-munity regardless of age or ability. “I congratulate the North Glasgow Healthy Living Community for staging the event and partner organisa-tions including the Police, the City Council and local housing associations for their support in making it a great success. I am already looking forward to the NG5k 2014!” Local Councillor Chris Kelly told the ReGEN: “I enjoyed taking part in my first NG5k. This is a great event to encourage local residents to get active, regardless of age or ability, and it was good to see the community turn out in their thousands despite the rain.“Now that I’ve caught the running bug I’ve signed up for the Glasgow 10k in October and I’m sure the NG5k will have encour-aged many others to do likewise.”

Ahead of the launch of First Glasgow’s brand new bus network simpliCITY, on 26 May, the company is promoting the First Bus App - a free app which is designed to improve the convenience and availabil-ity of information to bus customers. Managing Director of First Glasgow Ronnie Park said: “We will be doing eve-rything we possibly can to ensure our customers understand and are familiar with the changes that we will be making to the network. The First Bus app, which can be downloaded and used now, will prove a valuable tool as we prepare for a smooth transition from the old network to the new one. “We are always looking at new ways to improve our customers experi-ences and encourage more people to use our services. I am already a regular user of the app and so I can certainly wholeheart-edly recommend it to our passengers - it’s a fantastic app.” The App has been de-veloped by First Glasgow’s parent company, First Bus, and is now available to download from app stores for Android and iPhone mobile users. Mr Park added: “I can reassure our customers,

that we have a range of other initiatives that will help communicate details of the new network. Our entire business is gear-ing up for the launch of simpliCITY - we are looking forward to putting in place a network that will signifi-cantly improve and simplify services for the majority of our customers.’ The new app will make it easier for customers to plan their journeys while on the move. Every one of Great Britain’s 300,000 bus stops are included on the app’s map and thanks to the Global Positioning Sys-tem (GPS), users can find local bus stops, bus route maps, service updates and real-time bus departure information, where it is available. Users can save particular bus stops to a ‘Favour-ites’ list for journeys they make regularly, like going to work or visiting friends and relatives. The App will also provide users with First Glasgow informa-tion such as the types of ticket available, any service disruptions, and updates relating to what is happen-ing within the company. The app’s timetable and live information, which includes all bus operators in Great Britain, is jointly provided by Traveline and First.

This month is all about staying calm and focused, be clear about what you want and how you are going to achieve it, self-discipline and will power are your key strengths, mercury is retrograde in a few days so make sure you’re your communications are crystal clear.

A new opportunity, possibly career advancement, this is as good a time to take risks in order to follow your dreams, if you want to change your life, do it now. A time of self-expression and a fresh start.

Your ruling planet mercury is about to go retrograde and you have to make decisions now, being unwilling or unable to make decisions will cause you to stagnate, have faith in your own wisdom and move forward, Intuitively you know what to do.

Too much work, not trusting others to help you, will cause stress related illnesses, believe it or not you are not invincible, time to look at the softer side of yourself and allow that charm and wit to manifest help in your life. There is a need to balance work and play.

Things are looking up, the end of a difficult situation, the winds of change are blowing and it is a favorable wind. This is a good time to make changed in your career, there could be a resolution of conflict now which allows you to move on.

Learning from past endeavours is a key success for the future, knowing a situation or a subject well will help you sort out the pit falls a time of relaxation after a period of stress, ending contracts and fresh starts prominent now, your ruling planet Mercury is retrograde from the 24th so make sure all paper worked is double checked before signing.

Time out is required in order to maintain a balance, in both home and working life, something is lingering in your thought which is causing you distress time to vocalize how you feel and mercury retrograde at this time is actually helping you to speak up.

Time to open up to the world around you, both your heart and mind, as you listen to others and accepting them for who they are and their “Story” will inspire you to ret depths of understanding and truths, someone may offer you excellent even though it is a little unexpected. Listen!

Something suddenly needs your attention immediately a time of the unexpected events, even though haste is required it is important that no decision is rushed, careful consideration is also important, passion is great self-assured wonderful but timing is impeccable?

You seem to be in the past more than the present and it is fine as long as you don’t spend too much time on issues you cannot change, time to take life full on and make decisions to ensure a happy and secure future for you, and if that involves others, then ensure it is on your terms.

A project you started in the last few weeks is now coming to fruition and with that some public recognition for all your hard work, a time of success and personal achievements; self-esteem is increase, the feel good factor and some unexpected luck too of the good sort!!

The universe seems to be bringing in a shift of relationships, new and interesting people are now in and around your current social and family circle, a happy time ahead, positive emotions and a feeling of achievement.

RecipesIrish Lamb Stew11/2 lb of stewing lamb or shoulder cut into medium sized chunks2 tbsp of flour½ cup of barley2 onions chopped roughly2 carrots cut into 1 inch chunks1 ½ pints of lamb stock 2 tbsp oil1 tsp dried rosemarySeasoning

Toss the meat in the flour and fry in the oil until well browned. Add the barley and vegetables to the pan. Cook for a further 5 min. Add the barley, rosemary and stock. Bring to the boil and cover with a tight fitting lid. Reduce heat and simmer for 11/2 hours ensure you stir it occasionally to prevent it sticking.

ColcannonCooked mashed potatoesCooked shredded kale or Savoy cabbageButterCream

Mash the potatoes with plenty of butter and a dash of cream before beating in the cabbage. I like to pop under a hot grill to brown or into a hot oven for 10-15 min.

ChampCooked mashed potatoesButter Cream3 finely sliced scallions or spring onions

Again mash the potatoes with plenty of butter and a splash of cream before beating in the onion. Again I like to pop under a hot grill to brown or into a hot oven for 10-15 min.

Irish Soda Bread8oz plain flour1 carton of buttermilk1 tsp of bicarbonate of soda½ a tsp salt1 large egg

Sift the dry ingredients together. Make a well in the middle and add the buttermilk and egg. Fold in from the sides. You don’t have to work the dough, in fact the less you mix it the better, lighter and fluffier it will be. This is a rough almost wet dough.. Flour a baking tray. Flour your hands and mould into a rough circle. With a blunt knife Cut a large cross into the bread and bake in a hot oven 170c for about 30 minutes and it is golden brown. Tap the bottom and if it sounds hollow then it’s done. Allow to completely cool before slicing. I love a few slices with my stew, and a few slices with jam with a nice cup of tea later on.

Chicken & Chorizo Jambalaya Ingredients• 1 tbsp olive oil • 2 chicken breasts , chopped • 1 onion , diced • 1 red pepper , thinly sliced • 2 garlic cloves , crushed • 75g chorizo , sliced • 1 tbsp Cajun seasoning • 250g long grain rice • 400g can plum tomatoes • 350ml chicken stock 1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan with a lid and brown the chicken for 5-8 mins until golden. Remove and set aside. Tip in the onion and cook for 3-4 mins until soft. Then add the pep-per, garlic, chorizo and Cajun seasoning, and cook for 5 mins more.2. Stir the chicken back in with the rice, add the tomatoes and stock. Cover and simmer for 20-25 mins until the rice is tender.

Moroccan meatballs with herb couscous• 500g lean minced lamb • 1 red onion , grated • 2 garlic cloves , crushed • 2cm chunk root ginger , grated • a pinch dried chilli flakes • 2 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • olive oil • 2 x 400g tins plum tomatoes • 200ml chicken stock • ½ bunch coriander , chopped • 200g couscous • 50g butter • 350ml chicken stock , boiling • ½ bunch coriander , chopped • ½ bunch parsley , chopped 1. Put the lamb, onion, half the garlic, half the ginger and half the spices in a bowl and season well. Mix (clean hands are best) and form into little meatballs (you’ll make around 30). 2. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large non-stick pan and add the meatballs in batches, frying until browned all over. Scoop out, then add the rest of the garlic, ginger and spices and cook for 2 minutes. Add the tomatoes and stock and season. Simmer for 10 minutes, then add back the meatballs and cook for another 20 minutes until sauce is thickened. Stir in the coriander. 3. To make the couscous put in a bowl with the butter and some seasoning. Pour over the chicken stock and cover with clingfilm. Leave for 10 minutes. Stir the herbs through and serve with meatballs.

Lemon Drizzle Cake Ingredients• 225g unsalted butter , softened • 225g caster sugar • 4 eggs • finely grated zest 1 lemon • 225g self-raising flour • juice 1½ lemons • 85g caster sugar

1. Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Beat together 225g softened unsalted butter and 225g caster sug-ar until pale and creamy, then add 4 eggs, one at a time, slowly mixing through. Sift in 225g flour, then add the finely grated zest of 1 lemon and mix until well combined. Line a loaf tin (8 x 21cm) with greaseproof paper, then spoon in the mixture and level the top with a spoon.2. Bake for 45-50 mins until a thin skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. While the cake is cool-ing in its tin, mix together the juice of 1 1/2 lemons and 85g caster sugar to make the drizzle. Prick the warm cake all over with a skewer or fork, then pour over the drizzle - the juice will sink in and the sugar will form a lovely, crisp topping. Leave in the tin until completely cool, then remove and serve. Will keep in an airtight container for 3-4 days, or freeze for up to 1 month.

“Spacious and Accessible -The Parking is FreeSpringburn Shopping Centre’s – The Best Place to Be”

GLASGOW Provan MSP Paul Martin has urged his Parliamentary colleagues to support a bill that will regulate how bus services are delivered in Glasgow and Scotland. The proposal is being made by Iain Gray MSP, who launched a consultation earlier this week.If passed into law, the Bill aims to give transport au-thorities greater power over how bus services are run, including a new franchising power to tender contracts for profitable and non-profitable routes together. Speaking to the ReGEN, Paul Martin said:“I have seen an increas-ing number of complaints from people who are really unhappy about their local bus service. Having a good bus service means people can access employment oppor-tunities, use health services, go shopping or socialise with friends and family.“The Edinburgh Govern-ment has had 6 years to do something about it but have done nothing. It is time we

did something about it. This bill will reverse the long-term decline in bus industry and make sure my constituents finally get better buses.”The proposal is now out for consultation until the end of August and is being distributed to constituents, commu-nity and other interest groups, as well as bus industry bodies and operators. Speaking after launch-ing his consultation, Iain Gray MSP said: “I speak with many constituents who are rightly angry when local bus services are cut, but feel powerless when councils tell them it’s down to a commer-cial decision by the operator. “My Bill aims to give more power to local transport authorities, by giving them a greater say in how services are delivered in their area beyond the most basic terms. At the moment, the system makes it too easy for opera-tors to walk away from even

those services they are paid to deliver, and when they do, it’s communities that suffer. “There is a growing aware-ness that there are five times as many bus journeys as rail in Scotland, yet rail gets more attention and more public funding. I believe there is support in Parliament for this proposal to be debated, and I look forward to the responses to my consultation contribut-ing to that debate.”

City Building team pack-up £20,000 of donated materials for their trip to Malawi

A team of Glasgow-based construction workers are gearing up for their visit to Malawi by packing-up the supplies and materials donated to their project by companies across the UK. The team of six tradespeople and two Commonwealth apprentices from leading Scottish construction company City Building (Glasgow) LLP, working with Glasgow City Council and Access LLP, will travel to Malawi in September to refurbish a medical centre in the country’s capital Lilongwe. The £20,000 worth of materials will be shipped this month ahead of their arrival. Donor firms include Gap, Grahams and PPG who pledged power tools, plumbing materials, white goods, decorating materials, joiner materials and ironmongery to help with continuing construction improvements in the country. Lord Provost, Sadie Docherty said: “I am

extremely proud of everyone who, on my behalf, contributes their time and skill to help the people of Malawi. I would also like to acknowledge the kindness of the firms who donated supplies. This is work that will bring lasting benefit to the folk of Malawi. As I have said before, it is especially heartening that two young Commonwealth apprentices are involved. I know it will be a life-changing experience for them. “Glasgow City Council is proud of its long standing relationship with Malawi. Along with City Building and Access LLP, we have supported a number of health and education projects in Lilongwe, Dedza and Mangochi. “Malawi is one of the world’s poorest countries and Glasgow’s industrial wealth owes a great deal to sourcing raw materials from there and other countries within the Commonwealth. Our work helps give something back

in a meaningful way. This is also one of our pledges for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.” City Building working in partnership with Glasgow City Council has been sending teams to Malawi since 2008. The team will travel to Lilongwe to renovate the medical centre by building new kitchen and toilet facilities and adding a new dental suite, pharmacy and laboratory. In addition all the rooms will be decorated and given new floor finishes. The team will also build short stay accommodation, a breakout area for parents and children and a ramp will be installed to ensure the facility is accessible. Graham Paterson, Executive Director at City Building, said: “We’d like to say thank you to all the companies that made donations to this project. Their generosity will allow the team to deliver a medical centre that will help those most in need.

City Building currently deliver the repairs and maintenance service to over 70,000 GHA homes and have achieved a customer satisfaction rate of 96% over the past 4 years.

ng homes is a trading name of North Glasgow Housing Association

One Vision - New North Glasgow. A great place to live, learn, work, visit and invest.

Shiver Me Timbers - Its the Pirates of...Possilpark?

THE very model of a modern major general visited North Glasgow last week when Scottish Opera performed a little bit of Pirates of Penzance to residents from ng homes sheltered housing complexes.

Scottish Opera’s a Little Bit of… performances bring opera out of the theatre with full-scale shows cleverly re-written into lively 20-minute

versions. Based on a form of Japanese storytelling, the stories unfold to a series of colourful illustrations, brought to life by a storyteller, singer and two

instrumentalists.The ng homes residents

were captivated by Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance, with the narrator always encouraging them to join in with the performers in singing the songs.

Rena Fox from Hawthorn Street, Possilpark said: “The singing was lovely, the musicians were excellent and the narrator told the story really well with great patter.

I can’t wait until the next one.”

After the show the performers posed for photos and chatted with some of the residents before dashing off to their next performance.

Regeneration Co-ordinator for ng homes Margaret Layden said: “From speaking to the residents it’s clear that they thoroughly enjoyed the performance. We want to do more of this in North Glasgow and I’d like to thank Scottish Opera

and the staff who helped out to bring the Pirates of Penzance to life in our community.”

After the opera the residents tucked into Fish Suppers before being entertained by local entertainer Tommy Twigg who had the residents singing and bopping away as he ran through his repertoire of popular songs.

Sheltered Housing Manager Karen Johnson said: “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the opera and the dancing afterwards – it was a great day in thanks to Scottish Opera, Tommy Twigg and all the staff and residents who were involved.”

FREE Rugby coaching is taking place this month throughout North Glasgow supported by ng homes and ngsportslegacy with Glasgow Warriors Captain Alastair Kellock & rising star Murray McConnell popping along to a session at Eastfield Park in Springburn to lend a hand.

The interest in Rugby in North Glasgow was initially sparked earlier this year when the School of Hard Knocks charity and Sky Sports filmed their latest series which will be aired later this year in September.

Following on from participating in the School of Hard Knocks programme, many of those involved have continued to play Rugby in North Glasgow on a weekly basis with local club Allan Glens RFC, as well as training for an adult ‘Legacy’ team hoping to participate in a local 10-a-side tournament at the end of the month – local legend Kellock from nearby Bishopbriggs, popped in last week to give these boys a hand. First capped by Scotland in 2004 and with 47 international caps, Al was impressed by the lads who showed up at Springburn: “I think it’s great that ngsportslegacy and their partners are providing free rugby coaching in North Glasgow, some of the lads have really taken to the sport and it was good to meet them and see their enthusiasm at

first hand.”John Devine, Director of

Investment and Regeneration at ng homes is also delighted with the success of the free rugby training, he said: “To be able to bring the School of Hard Knocks and Sky Sports to North Glasgow was a fantastic achievement. It’s really pleasing to see the local community maintain their interest in Rugby after the cameras have gone.”

With ngsportslegacy wanting to keep local momentum going, it has also organised various Street Rugby coaching opportunities for young people at different sites in the community. The North Glasgow Giants have been providing rugby coaching for 10-14yr olds at Eastfield Park every Tuesday between 5pm-8pm, as well as running sessions at Possil Point on Wednesday evenings from 6pm.

In addition to that Glasgow Life/Scottish Rugby development staff are also running similar street rugby coaching on the same day (Tuesday) between 6pm & 7.30pm, as well as extra sessions taking place every Thursday at the red ash pitch in the shadow of the Red Road Flats between 6pm & 7.30pm - both session cater for 10-16 year olds. The coaching includes some basic fun rugby skills & games with high quality professional development staff and

local School of Hard Knocks coaches. There will also be a “Street Final” with a match scheduled between the sites on 30th May 2013.

PUPILS at Saracen Primary School rolled out the red carpet this week when the glitz and glamour of Holywood and London Fashion week descend on the school. Fashion designer to the rich and famous, Osman Yousefzada, who dressed Beyonce at this year’s Grammy awards, took time out of his busy schedule to visit the school and work with the school dance group on their competition costume designs. The children have created special mood boards to show Osman and in return he’s promised to bring along some of his beautiful de-signs and garments to show

the youngsters. Evelyn Gibson, Saracen Primary Head Teacher is beyond excited and has been busy preparing for the visit. She said: “This is such an amazing opportunity for our children and we’ve already had a very productive video conference with the designer last week. “The school dance group are competing in the Glasgow Dance Championships at the Emirates Arena on 7 June and to have help with their costumes designs by a world famous designer is truly outstanding.”

Osman Yousefzada has dressed many famous actresses including Leann Rimes, Kristen Stewart,

Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga, Thandie Newton and Gwyneth Paltrow to name but a few.

Pupils from Golfhill and St Denis’s primaries have caught the gardening bug and commuters at Duke Street railway station in the East End are going to benefit! Twelve children from the two schools have joined forces with ScotRail to spruce up the platforms as part of their community adopt-a-station initiative. Guided by school staff the pupils have been busy designing planters and choosing the best perennials to brighten up the station over the spring and summer months. The group have also been working with the school’s community and business partners – Dell Computers and Glasgow Wood Re-cycling who have supplied the barrows for the children to fill with bulbs, flowers and plants. Elaine Hunter, a teacher at Golfhill Primary and who has been leading on the project, is excited that the children will be finally getting their hands dirty with some gar-dening after all the planning and said: “The children have worked so well together as a group and can’t wait to tend the planters over the

coming months. “We will be getting some expert advice from a council gardener on which plants are best suited for station life and the children have been involved in choos-ing suitable wood for the planters. “Next term we will also embarking on some outdoor drawing focussing on the passing trains which will then be mounted as posters at the station. This is a real community project with

everyone working together and is a great way for the children to learn in so many aspects.” Elaine is working with her colleague Pauline Todd from Golfhill along with Eileen Kidd from St Denis’s to support the children in their endeavour John Yellowlees, ScotRail external relations manager, said “ScotRail’s adopt a sta-tion policy is about putting stations at the heart of their communities, and we are

delighted that the pupils of Golfhill and St Denis’s prima-ries have taken Duke Street Station to their hearts”. Local Councillor Frank Docherty said: “The display and planters are looking great. Congratu-lations to everyone involved and I look forward to this scheme being a continued success. “All we need now is some decent weather to allow the kids to look after their plants!”

Two-thirds of tickets to ex-perience the action and thrills of the Commonwealth Games will be priced at £25 or less, it was revealed this week. Announcing a family-friendly ticketing strat-egy focused on delivering packed stadia and a ‘Games for Everyone’, the Glasgow 2014 Organising Commit-tee unveiled that access to sporting events at one of the world’s greatest multi-sports Games will start from just £15 for adults. Half-price concessions will also be available for children - a Commonwealth Games first - and the over-60s. The price of a ticket includes ac-cess to public transport in the local area on the day of your event. The Games Competition Schedule was revealed for the first time and it gets off to a flying start with 12 sports on Day One, includ-ing Swimming and Track Cycling. The first weekend will be very busy with both Rugby Sevens and Weight-lifting expected to attract peak audiences. Announcing the Ticketing Programme, Glasgow 2014 Chairman, Lord Smith of Kel-vin, said: “This is a big day for Glas-gow 2014 and one that has taken a substantial amount of planning. This isn’t just about selling a million tick-ets. It’s about making the Games accessible to all. We have spent many months designing a Ticketing Pro-gramme that reflects the vi-sion and values of Glasgow 2014. Today’s the day we set out our stall. “We have listened and learnt from previous Com-monwealth Games as well as the London 2012 Olym-pic and Paralympic Games. We’ve also conducted our own research. We’ve

thought long and hard about the pricing, the process by which you’ll buy tickets, but also the way we communi-cate. “This is a Games for eve-ryone. And by that I mean success not just for the Or-ganising Committee and our partners, but also for the people of Glasgow, Scotland and the Commonwealth.” Three-time Olympian and double Commonwealth champion swimmer, David Carry, said: “Having experienced the spine-tingling and unforget-table atmosphere of Lon-don 2012 and the passion of crowds at previous Com-monwealth Games, I have no doubt that the athletes hoping to take part in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will have some-thing incredibly special to look forward to. “I also know that Scottish supporters will make the Games a warm, welcoming and once-in-a-lifetime expe-rience for all the athletes. It will be a really special time for them and for Glasgow. It is great that the ticket-ing policy at Glasgow 2014 is making it as accessible as possible for people to be part of making Glasgow 2014 the wonderful celebration of sport that I know it will be.” An allocation of tickets has also been earmarked for special distribution to identi-fied groups and communi-ties. More details will be an-nounced this summer.

THE latest demolition at the Red Road multi-storey flats in the North of Glasgow went with a bang as another tower block was demolished earlier this month. Hundreds gathered in the nearby area to watch the second of the iconic flats in the area brought crashing to the ground. The 30-storey building was reduced to around 10,000 tonnes of debris in around five seconds. Around 88kg of explosives were used to bring down the block. This was the second multi-storey to be demolished at Red Road following a similar blowdown in June last year. Executive Director of Development and Regeneration at Glasgow Housing Association, Alex McGuire, said: “The demolition of the second block of flats at Red Road is another step in the ongoing regeneration of Glasgow. “We’re working with our partners to

create new homes and communities across the city that people will want to live in for years to come. I’d like to thank all of the residents and businesses for their cooperation both before and after the blowdown.” The remaining six multi-storeys at Red Road will be demolished on an ongoing basis through to 2017 as part of the regeneration plans. Around 450 homes were temporarily evacuated for the blowdown with many of the local residents staying with family or friends or visiting the evacuation centre at All Saints Secondary School. Due to the unique steel-frame structure of the flats, the bottom 10 storeys of the block remained – as planned – undisturbed after the blowdown. The remaining storeys will be demolished using machines. The clear-up operation will take several months to complete with the

steel removed and recycled and the remaining rubble crushed and used as foundations for roads and buildings. Frances Smith, 49, from Bishopbriggs, was a teenager living at Red Road. She said: “It was a great place to grow up. In fact, I’m still in touch with some of the people even now. “We also lived in one of the other blocks at Red Road, but Birnie Court was different. It was a bit away from the other flats. It was very well kept as the caretaker was really strict. The second my mum saw the flat she was sold on it. “We had our own little community. At one point there were 17 children living in our landing on the 12th floor. It was a great time.” William Sinclair, Managing Director of demolition contractors Safedem, said: “It requires a real team effort and everyone has pulled together to

make this another safe and successful blowdown. “We’d particularly like to thank

nearby residents for their patience and understanding while the demolition was carried out.”

END OF THE ROAD FOR ANOTHER OF THE RED ROAD MULTIS

THE East End has been chosen to be the site for an ambitious programme aimed at using technology to make life in the city smarter, safer and more sustainable. Glasgow is embarking on a trail blazing programme which will put residents at the forefront of technology integration and application. The city beat 29 others to win the money in a UK-wide competition run by the Technology Strategy Board – the Government’s innovation agency. The pioneering programme will see a state-of-the-art technology operations hub created in the East End headquarters of Glasgow Community & Safety Services (GCSS). Super intelligent public space CCTV cameras will also replace the existing outdated network and their operators will be based in the new hub alongside specialists from TRAFFCOM

– the team in charge of the city’s traffic lights and traffic cameras. The two teams currently work from separate bases at Blochairn and Charing Cross. Glasgow will get more than 400 new digital cameras. The cameras are so advanced they could help avert potential disasters. They can be programmed to automatically detect unusual activity, for example if someone leaves a box or bag unattended. Suspicious instances will trigger an alarm prompting further investigation by the emergency services. Future Cities Demonstrator Glasgow is looking to work in partnership with public and private sector agencies providing a range of services to the city. They include Glasgow City Council, Police Scotland, housing providers, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, universities, energy providers and Scottish Enterprise.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of the Demonstrator, said: “Winning this funding was a major coup for Glasgow. Now we’re putting the teams and infrastructure in place to realise the potential of a hugely ambitious and far reaching programme which will permeate all sectors of city life. “This flagship programme may be in its infancy but, once complete, we hope it will provide a blueprint for other cities to follow. As a society

we are generating more data than at any time in history, by harnessing that knowledge we can improve the lives of Glasgow residents, the environment and the economy. “Glasgow is keen to embrace new technologies and create a forward thinking environment which will attract businesses from that sector, creating jobs with long term prospects. “We look forward to realising the future today through collaborative working with an array of partners.”

ONE of the most com-mon killers in the UK is the cancer, and with no known cure, medical practitioners are focussing on preventa-tive action. Cancer prevention week was created to help people realise what risks they faced and how they could

As you pick up this edition

of the Re-Gen there is every

likelihood that the snow is

here and the streets and

pavements are treacherous.

Why is this allowed to

happen year after year after

all it’s not rocket science that

around this time of year it is

near enough certain that it

won’t be sky high tempera-

tures, for a start, songs like

“Jingle Bells” and “Winter

Wonderland” wouldn’t have

been written unless we

expected snow and ice, would

they. So who plans where,

how and when, the pave-

ments and roads are treated

to avoid accidents? Is it the

Scottish Government or may-

be the City Council or even

the local Community Council

or it could be Mr Nobody

because anyone we’ve asked

seems to pass the buck. This

week alone we have heard of

two elderly pensioners falling

on the pavements in this area

alone, two pensioners who

were just going about their

daily routine of going to the

shop for their milk and bread.

Little did they know that

when they left their house

they would end up in the

Casualty Department of the

Royal. So who is respon-

sible for gritting our roads

and pavements then. Firstly

we looked at the Transport

Minister Keith Brown and we

discovered that the ultimate

responsibility for roads in

Scotland lies with him but he

can’t be expected to go out

and grit the roads now, can

he. So we looked at Glasgow

City Council’s winter mainte-

nance plan and we discovered

that they prioritise the grit-

ting. Major Bus Routes, Junc-

tions and Emergency Access

Routes are first to get the

treatment, roads in schemes

and council estates are well

down the list of priority. How

do they decide when to salt

the areas?

According to their web-

site this is what happens..

Land and Environmental

Services has a contract with

the Metreological Office to

supply weather forecasts for

Glasgow each day from the

beginning of October until mid

May. The department has

also installed ice stations at

five selected locations within

the city which together with

the facility to access fifteen

other stations in adjacent au-

thorities help to improve the

accuracy of forecasts. Staff

can access information from

these stations via portable

computers. Pre gritting op-

erations are undertaken from

the beginning of November

until the end of March on a

standby arrangement. Ad hoc

gritting is done outwith this

period. It also says Footpaths

and Pavements are always

treated??? Do you really be-

lieve this? Tell that to the two

pensioners mentioned earlier.

All the Re-Gen is asking for

is for someone to visit the

streets off the major roads,

the streets and pavements

where people actually live

and make sure they are safe

for the citizens of Glasgow. If

they can clear the pavements

in other places, surely it is not

too hard to do it here. After all

the winter is just starting or

did those in authority think it

would miss us this year!!!

Up to 500 new jobs are hoped to be created as part of a new development at Glasgow Fort. Glasgow City Council had been in discussions with the anchor tenant, Hercules Unit Trust, about the sale of land that would allow a 175,000 sq ft extension to be built. The trust will pay the council £6m to carry out the development, which the local authority said would create around 50 jobs during the construction phase and 450 roles once retail facilities open. This cash will go towards the regeneration of the retail centre, according to the local authority.

Bailie Liz Cameron, Executive Member for Jobs and the Economy at Glasgow City Council, said: “Glasgow Fort has been a great success story in the city’s East End, attracting a fantastic number of jobs and businesses.“This positive economic impact will be taken to a new level by today’s decision, hopefully attracting further investment to the area which would bring many new jobs to local people. “The sum paid by the developers as part of this agreement is a very welcome contribution to the continuing regeneration of this part of Glasgow.”

Glasgow Fort is one of the most successful out of town shopping centres in the UK, and has already delivered over 1500 jobs and more than 90 businesses to Easterhouse since opening in 2004, with around 65% of these positions filled by local people.

Local Councillor Maureen Burke said: “This is exciting news for the future of The Fort. There are a lot of people trying to get work at the minute and to hear about investment on this scale can only be a help to folk in Easterhouse. “The Fort already

employs well over 1000 local people and I know that Glasgow City Council have been working hard to reach this agreement with the Hercules Trust. With this announcement, and other regeneration projects from the council, our community is growing stronger and stronger.”

One year ago, we stood on the eve of the most important council elec-tion in Glasgow’s history. The SNP were telling all and sundry that they were about to sweep to power in the city, and this would be the first step on the way to vic-tory in the 2014 referen-dum. The people of Glasgow had different ideas. We ran a tremendous campaign based on our record, our vision and our identity. We had the best manifesto the Party has produced in many years with specific, de-liverable pledges and we overlaid all of this with damn hard work. Every single candidate worked unbelievably hard to deliver our victory, and to return 44 of our 45 candidates, with a 3.4% increase in our share of the vote was testament to this work. But winning the elec-tion was only the start for us. We have made tremendous progress in the first year of this administration. Despite a funding settlement which continues to take money from Glasgow to

give to the parts of the country the SNP actually cares about, we have already delivered 35 of our manifesto pledges and made huge progress in others. We have started work on refurbishing or rebuilding every pri-mary and ASL school in the city, helped first time buyers get on the housing ladder through our mortgage scheme, guaranteed every young person a job or appren-ticeship, directly funded 100 additional police of-ficers, extended nursery provision across the city, increased the living wage beyond the nation-al figure, and provided winter fuel payments to more than 14,000 over 80s this year. 2014 will be a huge year for this city – it will be the Year of Glasgow. And I am delighted that we are moving towards the Commonwealth Games and the refer-endum with such mo-mentum. Last year, we showed that we are the party who will always put Glasgow first, and I am proud that we are continuing to do so.

THE former Prime Minister Gordon Brown was in the East End this week as the Labour Party launched their campaign to keep Scotland as part of the UK. The MP was speaking to a packed audience of Labour supporters at the Emirates Arena. The ‘United With Labour’ event hosted by Glasgow Central MP Anas Sarwar is designed to be a Labour specific campaign showing the party’s positive reasons for keeping the union between Scotland and England. Speaking at the launch, Mr Brown said that “pooling and sharing resources gets the best for everyone”. He told the gathering: “In the last few years I have had time on my hands, time to reflect, courtesy of the British people, and I want to put the positive, principled, forward-looking case for a strong Scottish Parlia-ment inside a strong United Kingdom. “I want to put the case for pooling and sharing of resources right across the UK for the benefit we all get in Scotland, Eng-land, Wales and Northern Ireland.” “We’re in the Chris Hoy

centre and what does his experience show? That as a Scot, part of the UK cycling team, as he himself said, he achieved more working together.” The former Chancellor then launched an attack on the SNP’s plans for corporation tax and the currency. He said: “You would lose half the share of corpora-tion tax revenue. Then what would happen is the English would cut their corporation tax, the Welsh would demand they had the right to cut theirs, the Northern Irish already want the right to cut theirs. “Then there would be a race to the bot-tom and soon we would have very little revenue

at all from corporations operating in the United Kingdom.” In the event of inde-pendence, The Scottish Government has said it planned to keep the pound in a “sterling zone” with the rest of the UK. Mr Brown said this would mean “UK de-cisions on interest rates, UK decisions on money supply, UK decisions on inflation without any Scottish input whatso-ever”. Deputy Leader of The Scottish Labour Party Anas Sarwar MP also addressed the audience. He said: “The referendum is the biggest campaign the people of Scotland will have seen in generations

and the decision on the 18 September 2014 will affect you, your fam-ily and your community forever. “Over the coming weeks and months there will be a number of voices but one voice that must be heard is the Labour voice. For all the communities who need a Labour voice speak-ing up for them, for all the communities who need Labour at their side standing up for them, we will make the positive case for the UK based on our values; on equality, on fairness, on solidarity and on social justice.” The referendum on Scottish independence has been set for 18th September 2014.

A GROUP of photography enthusiasts have formed a new club in the East End of the city. The Dennistoun Photographers Group was started after local resident Mark Scott wanted to run an inclusive club so other enthusiasts could share knowledge and skills as well as identifying projects where other club members could collaborate. Speaking to the ReGEN Mark said: “I first started the club as a pilot to see what level of interest there would be. We have around 25 regular attendees now covering all ages and abilities. “The chance to meet like minded people from the local community is a great and I would encourage anyone who is interested to get in touch and get involved.” The club is aiming to assist in providing members with the knowledge, tips and tricks to improve their images in an encouraging and enjoyable environment. The emphasis isn’t on skill level, or the level of equipment. It is about getting the same enjoyment from old film cameras, the cameras on our phones right though to the advanced digital cameras and lenses of today. The club meets every Tuesday at 7pm, Salvation Army, Craigpark Drive.

The youngsters redecorated a games room in Riddrievale house respite home, giving it a new lease of life. The room had fallen into a state of disrepair, making their efforts all the more appreciated by users and staff at the home The Mark Scott Leadership for Life Award is a flagship project for The Outward Bound Trust in Scotland and is a unique programme which tackles divisive issues in society through a combination of outdoor and community based learning, focused on planning and delivery of a project of practical benefit to local communities. The Mark Scott Foundation was established in 1996 following the death of Mark Scott a 16-year-old Glasgow schoolboy who was murdered in an unprovoked sectarian attack. In 1997 the Foundation and The Outward

Bound Trust established The Mark Scott Leadership for Life Award which has been delivered in partnership with The Trust since its inception. More than 1,750 young people have earned The Mark Scott Leadership for Life Award. Commenting on this year’s Award ceremony, Martin Davidson, Scottish Director at The Outward Bound Trust, said: “Yet again this year’s

ceremony celebrated the magnificent achievements of Scotland’s young people. Each recipient of this Award has earned it through dedication and commitment to supporting and improving the lives for others in their communities. “They have worked tirelessly together with enthusiasm, skill and energy. Their parents, schools and communities are grateful and very proud. Very well done!”

THE Glasgow list MSP Bob Doris urged the Scottish Government to review the powers open to them to ensure that local authorities conduct open and genuine consultation when consid-ering the redesign of day centre services for adults with learning difficulties. The call follows Glasgow City Council’s decision to close three centres. In a parliamentary ques-tion to Michael Matheson, Minister for Public Health, Mr Doris stated that the clo-sure of three centres would increase the problems faced by carers and service users if the 320 day care places were not replaced. Mr Matheson was urged to consider further powers, including the possibility of call-in, in cases where the consultation process was found to be flawed. Following his question in Parliament, Mr Doris said: “With health and social care integration progressing apace, it is vital that local

authorities understand the increas-ing impor-tance of the decisions they make to the health needs of the people we all represent. “I fully support the right of local authorities to decide how best to meet the needs of adults with learning difficulties. However, the framework under which councils operate needs close examination. Under the current regulations, Glasgow City Council has been allowed to conduct a sham consultation with a pre-determined outcome, marginalising service users and carers in the process. “I believe that there should exist a clear, statu-

tory framework for Councils to operate under, and that it should provide a clear path for legal action if a Council fails to meet its obliga-tions. Currently, if Ministers believe that a Council has taken an improper decision, say, to close a school, they can overrule that decision. No such recourse exists where day centres are concerned.”

GOVERNMENT ASKED TO CON-SIDER ‘CALL IN’ OVER DAY CENTRE CLOSURES

PUPILS at St Roch’s Second-ary School in Royston are currently studying for an extra qualification sup-ported by GHA which helps them learn about social landlords and what they do. A total of 25 fourth-year pupils from St Roch’s are studying for the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) Award in Community Action in Housing qualification – the first time a CIH qualifi-cation has been delivered to a school anywhere in the UK. The course helps the young people expand their knowledge of the housing sector, gives them a rec-ognised qualification – and could be the first step on a career in housing. The course is a partner-ship between GHA, CIH Scotland and St Roch’s. GHA helped develop materials the youngsters use, includ-ing exercises, activities and assignments involved, and helped directly with the costs of running the quali-fication. Maureen Dowden, GHA’s Assistant Director of Com-

munity Engagement and Governance, said: “We’ve been offering this course to tenants for the past five years but this is the first time GHA, or any organisa-tion, has been involved in delivering it in a school. “It’s a really exciting development and the young people are very enthusiastic about learning about hous-ing. “ Last month, GHA arranged for a group of St Roch’s pupils to attend the CIH Scotland Conference at the SECC in Glasgow in March to reward their hard work and to enhance their knowledge

of the housing sector. Alan Ferguson, Direc-tor of CIH Scotland, added: “We are delighted with this qualification pilot and hope it serves as a model for other housing organisations and schools across the UK to follow suit. “To see young people develop through voluntary activity in their commu-nities and to be able to improve their understand-ing of housing issues is fantastic. “The support of GHA and the commitment of the school have been key to the success of the programme.”

LAMBHILL girl Chantelle Brannagan (8) is carrying the hopes of Glasgow as she takes part in the finals of Little Miss Scotland. Chantelle, a pupil at Cal-dercault Primary School, will have to compete with 15 other girls from across Scot-land in categories including a talent round, traditional round, evening wear round and on stage questioning with the prize of a modeling contract at stake for the winner. She has already made the cut from 180 competitors to take part in the Finals on the 15th of June at the Premier Inn, Ballater Street, Glasgow. Speaking to the ReGEN, her father Andy said: “I know that this has been a great experience for Chantelle, she has really enjoyed it. It has helped her confidence and allowed her to meet new people. “She will be working hard over the next couple of weeks to impress the judges, so fingers crossed

for competition time. She has already made us very proud!” The contestants are also challenged to raise money for charities associated with the hosts, Model Scot-land. This year, the chosen charities are NSPCC, The Children’s Society, British

Heart Foundation, Cancer Research, British Red Cross, Salvation Army, Yorkhill Children’s Foundation and Daisy’s Dream. People can support Chan-telle by donating towards her charities and also come along and support her in the finals on the 15th of June.

A national campaign has been launched to encourage people across Scotland to consider walking or cycling instead of taking short car journeys. The campaign carries the message ‘Not far? Leave the car’ and aims to highlight that making active travel choices for short journeys, rather than using the car, can make the en-vironment cleaner and greener, improving people’s health and wellbeing. The integrated campaign includes TV, radio, outdoor advertising, digital, field activity as well as partnership work-ing to encourage people to reassess their car use. An app has also been created to help people modify their behaviour and track the benefits, through plotting and recording shorter journeys in order to calculate the calories burned and emis-sions saved. Environment Minister Paul Wheelhouse said: “We’re all in the habit of jumping in the car for short trips that we could easily walk or cy-cle. Mile for mile, it’s the short car journeys that create the most carbon emissions – and with one in three car journeys made in Scotland being under two miles, and nearly a quarter of all trips under a mile - it’s vitally important that steps are taken to encourage people, where possible, to make active travel choices. “This campaign aims to do just that. By encouraging people to consider if they can walk or cycle short journeys rather than using the car we will not only help to reduce carbon emissions and tackle climate change but also improve our health and wellbeing. And we’ve already signalled our commitment to making it easier and safer for people to get active by invest-ing over £58 million in cycling and walking projects.

“The new app is a fun and interactive way for people to get involved, allowing them to track exactly how active travel will benefit them and their surroundings. Getting active is easy, simple and the most effective way to better your health and reduce risk of serious illness, adding years of quality life, making you feel happier, less stressed and more energised. “Of course, public transport and car sharing are also great ways to cut our carbon emis-sions especially when walking or cycling are just not possible. By making smarter day to day travel choices we can have a real impact on our environment helping to ensure a low carbon, more sustainable Scotland be-comes a reality.” Living Streets Scotland is just one of many organisations backing the campaign. This month, businesses and schools across the country will be par-ticipating in Walk to Work (May 13-17) and Walk to School Week (May 20-24). Keith Irving, Head of Living Streets Scotland, said: “This May, we want to get people across Scotland out of their car seat and onto their two feet. We’re urging families to give walking a go during Walk to School Week, encouraging children to get walking now and set healthy habits for the future.” “We think you’ll be amazed at what a difference a short blast of fresh air can do for you as part of your daily life. Walking is free, green and easy, help-ing you feel better, in body and mind.” Chair of the 2020 Transport subgroup Terri Vogt, said: “The 2020 Climate Group is fully committed to ensuring that all sectors of Scotland’s econo-my and civic society contribute fully to achieving Scotland’s

world-leading target of a 42 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. “The fact that so many of our car journeys are under two miles, creating relatively more carbon emissions, highlights just why this campaign is neces-sary – and exactly why the 2020 Climate Group is fully behind the Scottish Government’s new active travel campaign to tackle car use for short journeys. “Encouraging people to walk more through the campaign message ‘Not far? Leave the car’ benefits not only the envi-ronment but also helps people save money and get fitter.” Further Information The campaign gives guidance on how to make smarter travel choices and will be backed by TV advertising, social media as well as a one-stop website www.greenerscotland.org/activetravel which provides support and guidance. The campaign will also take to the streets with a national information road show visiting towns and cities across Scotland from May 10. The Scottish Government has committed to ambitious climate change targets of a 42 per cent reduction in greenhouse emis-sions by 2020 and an 80 per cent reduction by 2050. This includes investing over £58 million in cycling and walk-ing projects over this Spending Review period. The app can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store by searching ‘greener journeys’.

The dreaded ‘bedroom tax’ will be coming into effect from April 2013. It is important to know if you will be affected. As part of the ReGEN’s Welfare Reform Awareness Campaign, we are highlighting this week the changes to those who are in receipt housing benefit. It is im-

portant to contact your housing officer if you think your benefit might change.Shelter Scotland and other housing charities have already highlighted the dangers that reform will bring. They have produced this guide for those with questions about ‘the

bedroom tax.’If you have a spare bedroom and you’re renting from the council or a housing association and getting housing benefit, then the amount of benefit you receive may be reduced. This is commonly known as ‘the bedroom tax’.

Reduced housing benefit if you have a spare bed-roomFrom April 2013 if you’re of working age, receiving housing benefit and renting a property that’s bigger than you need, it’s likely that your benefit will be reduced. If you have more bedrooms than you need for your household then you’ll lose a percentage of your housing benefit. This is referred to as ‘under-occupying’ your home or ‘the bedroom tax’.

How many bedrooms can I get housing benefit for under the new rules? These ‘under occupancy’ changes mean that you can only claim housing benefit for one bedroom for each of these people who live in your home:• a couple• an adult• two children of the same sex• two children under 10• any other child, except foster children and children who don’t normally live with you• a carer providing over-night care. This is the same as for people claiming housing benefit in the private sec-tor. However, the rules for people under 35 claiming

housing benefit and the limit on the number of bedrooms you can claim for won’t apply to council and housing associa-tion tenants.

How much will be hous-ing benefit be reduced by?If you have more bedrooms than you need then a percent-age reduction will be applied to your eligible rent for the purposes of your housing benefit claim:• 14% will be taken off if you have one extra bedroom than you need, or• 25% will be taken off if you have two extra bedrooms than you need. These deductions affect housing benefit claims for both new and existing claims from April 2013.

How can I pay for the rest of my rent?If you’re going to be affected by a deduction to your housing benefit then it’s very impor-tant that you prepare for the change before April 2013. There are several things you can do:• take in a lodger – renting out a spare room would bring in extra income, but get the agreement of your landlord first and check whether this will affect any other benefits that you’re currently receiving, the first £20 of any rent you receive won’t count as income on your benefit claim• ask for a contribution to your rent - your family members may be able to pay more towards your rent• move to a smaller property – you may be able to transfer to

a smaller property, speak to your council or the housing association you’re renting from to see if you can apply to do this • apply for a discretionary housing payment – your local council may be able to give you temporary support to help you stay in your home through a discretionary housing payment. If you can’t pay all your rent after the reduction you may have to think about finding somewhere else to live or you will risk falling behind with

your rent and possibly being evicted. Speak to an adviser in your area as soon as possible if you’re worried that this may happen to you.

Are there any exemp-tions to the ‘over occu-pancy’ changes? The reduction to housing ben-efit for households with extra bedrooms will not apply to:• pensioners• people living in shared own-ership properties• people living in accommoda-tion like caravans, houseboats• temporary accommodation• some exempt supported ac-commodation.

West of Scotland Housing Association (WSHA) is currently exploring the benefits of a partnership with Gentoo Group. The two organisations are currently in discussions to find out what a partnership could mean and the benefits it could bring to tenants.

Duncan McNaught, Chief Executive of West of Scotland Housing Association said: “We are exploring a potential partnership because we are looking to the future and the financial challenges that all housing associations will face in the next few years. These challenges include welfare reform which is likely to reduce the income available to all associations, and the need to invest more money in our houses to achieve higher energy efficiency targets which could help protect our tenants from rising energy costs.

“We need to adapt, and believe it is not an option to do nothing in the face of the challenges ahead.” WSHA believes that making this positive change will make the Association fitter for these challenges. It will help ensure the Association continues to be able to provide the best homes and services possible for its tenants and communities in the long term.

Gentoo Group is a well established housing provider and regulated in England by the Homes and Communities Agency. With a strong track record, throughout the years it has demonstrated commitment to high standards, good quality homes, and strong communities. More than just a housing association, Gentoo is about improving lives by investing in people, the planet and property based activities.

The two organisations therefore share similar values and a strong cultural fit with similar aspirations around creating sustainable communities and homes that are fit for the future.

Duncan continues, “We have been impressed by what we have seen in our discussions with and visits to Gentoo. We are now looking in detail at what real benefits a partnership with Gentoo could provide.”

If West of Scotland Housing Association joined Gentoo Group it would stay as a housing association registered with the Scottish Housing Regulator as well as keep its name and ownership of its housing. WSHA will still employ its own staff, work from its present offices and remain being governed by its own Management Committee. Most importantly, tenants will keep their existing rights and their landlord will remain as West of Scotland Housing Association. Gentoo Group would be WSHA’s parent body and set the overall Group strategy.

Duncan concludes, “These are exciting times for the Association, this partnership has the potential to provide new solutions to the challenges we face.”

BEDROOM TAX COMING SOON, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE CHANGES

Re-GENTHE

Friday 22nd February 2013 15

BEDROOM TAX COMING SOON, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE CHANGES“Jobs guarantee, VAT cut and lower energy bills – An alternative Queen’s Speech”

THE House of Commons has just spent six days debating the Queens Speech to start the new Parliamentary session. While all but two of the Bills announced by the Government will apply wholly or in part to Scotland, this was in truth a thin Queens Speech which failed to meet the challenges on the economy or on living standards which people in Glasgow and right across the UK are facing.

The Coalition Government is also increasingly fractious and riven with divisions between the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives over Europe, childcare, and welfare. We witnessed the extraordinary spectacle of Tory MPs voting to amend the Queens Speech, and Tory Cabinet Ministers failing to support their own Prime Minister in the Division Lobbies. A Labour Queens Speech would have given a strong

signal of what a One Nation Government could do for Scotland in 2015. It would have contained a Jobs Bill, to help put back to work the 17,000 people across Scotland, including 600 in Glasgow North East, who have been out of work for two years or more. We know from our neighbours and friends the impact that long-term unemployment has on communities, but people are also scarred permanently by the experience, and often have substantially lower earnings even if they manage to find work again, as the ILO has just explained. So Labour would follow the successful example of countries like Sweden with a jobs guarantee, initially for people out of work for two years or more, but eventually extended to people jobless for a year or longer, paid for by a tax on bank bonuses, and limiting the tax relief paid on pension contributions to 20p in every £1 for the very wealthiest in society paying the top rate of income tax. Labour would also introduce a Financial Services Bill to make major reforms to our broken banking sector – creating a power to separate investment from retail banking if required to stabilise the economy, establishing new regional based banks to boost

weak demand for lending from struggling small and medium sized businesses, facilitating the creation of new high street banks to offer more competition in the market, and setting up a fully-fledged British Investment Bank to support strategic industries such as the renewable sector, with the potential to create tens of thousands of jobs in Scotland. With median wages for ordinary workers set to decline by 10% in real terms during the term of the Coalition, Labour would also deal with the underlying weakness of demand in the Scottish and UK economy by a Finance Bill which would cut VAT for a temporary period, and put an average of £450 this year in the pockets of over 67,000 voters in Glasgow North East, nearly ten times as much as they would benefit from the Coalition’s plans to increase the personal tax allowance to £10,000 from next April. We would introduce a 10p starting rate of income tax, and reverse the 50p top rate tax cut, in order to ensure that 10,000 families in Glasgow North East get back some of the cuts to working tax and child tax credits the Coalition imposed this April. Families in Scotland are losing on average £28.63 a week from the cumulative effects of Government policies on wages, tax, and

benefits. When the IMF are telling George Osborne that a change of course is now required to lift dismal levels of growth, meaning that tax receipts are forecast to be lower, while progress on cutting the deficit has stalled, it is incumbent upon the Government to act. Labour would also introduce a Consumer Rights Bill to reform the energy market and ensure primarily that nearly 6,400 over 75s in Glasgow North East would have an average £200 reduction in heating bills by being placed on the lowest energy tariff. Before being elected in 2009, I organised campaigns locally seeking an inquiry into operation of the wholesale gas market. We would scrap the ineffective Ofgem regulator and ensure that everyone benefited from lower bills by ending the monopoly on supply by the Big 6 companies by establishing a pool which they would have to offer electricity into. We would also legislate to prevent excessive fare rises and super peak fares on the West and East Coast Mainline and cross-border rail services affecting Scotland, and act to cap excessive pension charges by providers to a maximum of 1%. There may be just under two years until the next General Election, but this divided Government cannot

unite itself much less the country. It is seeking to divide people socially by turning neighbour against neighbour in a cultural war over welfare, whereas the SNP are trying to divide Scotland geographically from working people in other parts of the UK. Neither approach is best placed to put Scotland back to work, raise wages for Scottish workers falling month on month, cut energy bills for hard-pressed homes, or introduce early years education and care on the scale needed to cut Scotland’s inequality gap. We need a One Nation Labour Government for the UK which will build an economy which works for ordinary people, as much in Glasgow, as in Newcastle, Cardiff and Belfast.

Working hard for the communities of Acre, Ashfield, Balgrayhill, Balornock, Cadder, Carron, Colston, Cowlairs,Gairbraid, Germiston, Hamiltonhill, Kelvindale, Keppochhill, Kirklee, Lambhill, Maryhill, Maryhill Park, Milton,

Parkhouse, Petershill, Port Dundas, Possilpark, Royston, Ruchill, Sighthill, Springburn, Summerston and Wyndford.

Earlier this month a Freedom of Information Inquiry revealed that the number of people in Glasgow waiting in Accident & Emergency for more than 4 hours has trebled since 2009. In 2007 Labour introduced a target that 98% of patients would wait less than 4 hours, however in February it became clear that there were real problems in some A&Es and Scot-tish Labour leader Johann Lamont questioned Alex Salmond on the case of a Glasgow patient left lying with chest pains in a hospital corridor for eight hours. It was also revealed that in December around 300 people had waited more than 8 hours. At that time Mr Salmond said that progress was being made on achieving the target, but it has since emerged that only days before his answer the SNP Government reduced the target from 98% to 95% meaning that even less people can expect to receive the attention they require speedily upon admission to A&E.

The figures in Glasgow show that in 2009 around 10,000 people waited more than 4 hours but by this year the figure had leaped to almost 32,000. The SNP Government has suggested that recent pressures are due to a busy winter with more emergency admissions and that they have tackled the problem with more NHS investment. However, the reality is that less people turned up at A&E in December 2012 than in previ-ous months and the additional A&E investment announced in February is cash taken from other health areas that are already under pressure. Yet again this suggests an NHS under pressure and an SNP Govern-ment failing to take the action needed to support patients and staff. That’s why Scottish Labour held a debate in Parliament on the 8th May raising concerns about the 1,400 beds and 2,000 nursing and midwifery staff cut by the SNP and calling on them to guarantee

that there will be no further cuts to hospitals, beds, doctors and nurses. Unfortunately the SNP chose not to support Labour’s call but myself and my colleagues will continue to fight to protect our NHS. At the end of April I attended the official opening of Benview Campus in Ruchill Park. The £19m. campus was built as part of the Council’s commitment to providing our young people with the most modern environment in which to learn. Over recent years £550m. has been invested in schools, with Benview being the most recent investment in our area following new campuses in Milton and Keppoch. The Council remains committed to rebuilding or refurbishing every primary school in Glasgow and plans to spend £250m. over the next 5 years to achieve this. I will be working hard alongside my Council colleagues to ensure that our older primary schools benefit from this investment.

To judge by recent activity on the Government benches in the House of Commons you would believe the most pressing issue in the country at the moment is our relationship with the EU. Nothing shows how weak the Prime Minister’s leadership is, and how woeful is the Government’s focus on the real struggles being faced by young people in finding work, and families in managing declining wages with rising prices, than the Tory obsession with Europe. The Prime Minister vainly tried to sate the appetite of his Europhobic backbenchers by committing his party to an in/out referendum on EU membership in 2017, on an agenda of renegotiating the UK’s relationship on an unspecified agenda of repatriating powers pooled at EU level. While he has produced no definitive list, it is easy to conceive that justice and home affairs, and people’s rights at work, including

maternity and paternity leave, are all areas where

the Tories want to end cross-EU co-operation involving the UK, even where these are manifestly in the national interest. His plan has failed however – most of his backbenchers will not rest until Britain is out of the EU, and he has no guarantees that other EU leaders will accede to his request to re-open the EU Treaties. But while the Tories turn their focus inwards, people in Scotland are calling for both the UK and Scottish Governments to come up with a plan to boost growth and reverse the decline in living standards being faced by households on a weekly basis. Growth since 2010 has been the second worst in the G7, and the real wages of a worker on the average income is set to slump by 10% during this Parliament. The youth employment rate is lower now than in 2009, with a shortfall of nearly 400,000 jobs for 18-24

year olds. All of the gains made by ordinary families under Labour on child poverty between 2001-2010 threaten to be undone by the Coalition in a single term. That is why the priority of Governments should be affordable childcare for families facing paying nearly a third of their post-tax income on childcare costs, striving for a full employment Scotland, and looking to raise the wages of those on low and middle incomes, while easing their tax burden through a temporary VAT cut and a 10p starting rate of tax.But we best do this by retaining a stable currency in sterling, and supporting our economy with a strong central bank in the Bank of England. Only by staying in the UK can we guarantee keeping both. In short, we need a politics to raise living standards for the many, not an agenda of disengagement from either the UK or the EU, promoted by the Tory/SNP governing elites, for whom constitutional politics is their real priority.

I have been campaigning recently with members of other political parties in Maryhill and Springburn in recent weeks, urging people to vote YES on September 18 next year. I have delivered leaflets and knocked doors with members of other parties such as the Scottish Socialists and Greens. Whisper it so their leadership don’t get too upset, but we have also had Labour voters campaigning with us. Additionally, many involved in the campaign belong to no political party at all. Many undecided voters express a desire to vote for independence, but remain uncertain because of a particular issue on which they seek reassurance. Polls suggest that most people would support independence if they thought it would make Scotland wealthier and fairer. Our main task is to convince people of this. We have already said we would scrap the Bedroom Tax - which the

Labour Party wish to retain. More

depressing details of UK welfare reforms were revealed the other day. Many of the changes will particularly affect women, such as Universal Credit, which is paid on a household basis rather than to individuals. People who look after their children and have no direct income - most commonly women - will have benefits paid entirely to the “breadwinner”. We would pay Universal Credit in a fairer way, but without independence, have no power to do so. Compare this with the uncertainty of remaining in the UK. UK governments are in the most part elected by voters in marginal seats in the south-east of England. Therefore, despite consistently rejecting the Tories for sixty years, Scotland has spent half that time being governed by them - and much of the rest of the time by a Labour government which apes Tory

policies in order to appeal to those south-east voters. As the UK parties move to the right in response to the rise of UKIP in England, there is now, unfortunately, virtually no chance of a remotely left-wing UK government in the near future. Scotland’s Deputy First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, recently addressed this point, asking: what will the UK look like in 2020? What will the Tories have done to pensions by then? What wars will the UK involve itself in, how many more billions will have been squandered on nuclear weapons? How many more cuts will come to Scotland despite the wealth we generate? As an independent country, we can decide these things for ourselves, rather than being at the mercy of a UK government with another agenda. In contrast, if we don’t like what the government in an independent Scotland does, we can kick them out. With 500 days to go, it’s time for the NO campaign to start addressing this serious issue.

The UK Government’s programme of Wel-fare Reform is a further burden on people already struggling to make ends meet, as the cost of living continues to soar and the cuts start to bite.

By cutting support for the working poor and middle income families, the To-ries are sending a clear signal that they want our poorest communities to pay the price for the mess they are making of our economy. And yet, nothing has been done to tackle the rising long-term unemploy-ment that is blighting our poorest commu-nities. Here in Glasgow East, 3,660 people are without a job.

As Scotland knows all too well, the Tories, are happy to let vulnerable people and the working poor pay for their mis-handling of our economy.

Let us be clear, it is disabled people, children and those on low incomes that will suffer the impact of their sweeping welfare reforms.

But it is a sobering thought to think that the worse is yet come.

For example, the changes to housing benefit will see the introduction of a size

criteria, which will result in charges for rooms which are unoccupied. This will in-crease the bills for those Housing Benefit claimants living in the social rented sector by an average of £728 per year.

Housing Associations here in Glasgow have already expressed to me their con-cerns about this change and there is a real concern that many people will be pushed into expensive privately rented accommodation which will only serve to increase the benefit bill.

What’s more, cuts to Child Benefit will hit middle earners and will effect up to 280 people here in Glasgow East. It is simply unfair that some couples earning as much £100,000 will keep all their child benefit but one-earner families on just £50,000 will see it slashed. More incom-petence from the Tories.

My Labour colleagues and I support the principle of universal Child Benefit as we understand the additional cost of bringing up children. On the other hand, the To-ries are showing themselves to be out of touch with ordinary people.

Disabled people are being hit hard too.

The Disability Living Allowance will be re-placed with a new Personal Independence Payment which could see 25,000 disabled people give up their jobs because they can’t afford the extra costs of getting to work.

The Tories also plan to abolish Council Tax Benefit and devolve responsibility to local authorities with a 10% cut. Without ring-fencing the fund to ensure the poor-est and most vulnerable are protected, there is a real risk of adding to communi-ties’ problems, not helping them.

Of course, Scottish Labour believes you should be better off in work than on benefits - work should always pay. We believe in the value of work and the opportunities that it can provide. That’s why we introduced the minimum wage and tax credits. On the other hand, this Government seems more concerned with punishing the poor than giving them op-portunities.

I have heard from a number of con-stituents who are concerned about how these changes will affect them. By taking away child benefit from middle income families, cutting support for disabled people and help with council tax bills for those on the lowest incomes, The Tories are showing their true colours.

I was pleased that this week the Council has been forced to back down on controversial plans for a radical re-design of George Square.

George Square has acted as Glasgow’s civic centre for more than 200 years.

It has played host to Remem-brance parades, pop concerts, nativity scenes, Hogmanay hoo-lies, Olympic hero returns and the occasional office worker feeding sandwich crusts to the local pi-geon population.

But, for all that, it is currently a bland and tired looking advert for a city on the up.

So much work has been done in recent years to showcase

Glasgow, that it’s a disgrace George Square has been neglect-ed for so long.

However the city fathers at-tempted to plough on with re-development plans without any meaningful input from the public. Six designs were shortlisted, but there was little transparency in how they were chosen, and the consultation was a sham exercise, with Glaswegians given just nine days to register their views before the announcement of the winner on January 18.

A leading voice of sanity in this debate has been my council col-league, David Meikle, who was critical of the rushed way this pro-cess has been handled.

His view that we should pause and consider a seventh option is one that the public has supported, one which would still see the hated red tarmac ripped up – but would cost less, be appreciated more and add a softness and calm utility to a space designed for use by all Glasgow’s workers, resi-dents and visitors.

And now Glasgow City Council have seen sense and announced exactly that - a renovation instead of wholesale change. Although there are still some concerns about cost, I hope now that we can see a return to a greener space – with trees, borders and grass incorporated for everyone to enjoy.

As ReGen readers will recall, over a year ago health cam-paigners helped force the Health Secretary Nicola Stur-geon into saving Lightburn Hospital.

The successful campaign gave new hope to hospital us-ers and I was delighted that the Scottish Government had seen sense by keeping this vi-tal facility.

During the campaign it became clear that Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board had run down the facili-ties and services available in anticipation of closing the hos-pital for good. So it was im-

portant when Nicola Sturgeon announced that the hospital was to be saved, she made it clear that the services lost would now be restored and that money would be spent to improve the fabric of the building.

One of the driving forces behind the Save Lightburn Campaign was Gerry McCann of the East Glasgow Parkin-son’s Group. I met with him this week for an update on the progress of improvement works only to discover that after over a year, the hospi-tal has had no significant im-provement works. Staff still

do not have their canteen restored and have resorted to using a vending machine. The Scottish Government has not fulfilled their promise to restore Lightburn Hospital and health bosses in Glasgow need to be told to carry out the im-provement works urgently.

I will be requesting an ur-gent meeting with Alex Neill, the new Health Secretary, so that health campaigners, local Councillors and I can meet to discuss the future of Lightburn Hospital. It is important that the uncertainty ends and we can start to restore a much valued service to the East End.

portant when Nicola Sturgeon announced that the hospital was to be saved, she made it clear that the services lost would now be restored and that money would be spent to improve the fabric of the building.

FOR many of us in the east end of Glasgow, the last three years have seen things get worse, not better. Last Wednesday, the Tory and Lib Dem UK Government set out its programme for the coming year. Instead of offering credible solutions to the problems facing people in our area and across Scotland, the Tory and Lib Dem Government showed itself to be an administration running out of ideas. People in Glasgow East needed bold moves to boost employment and action to tackle rip-off energy companies. What we got was empty words and focus on the wrong issues. We got nothing to provide reassurance to my constituents who are worried about seeing young people leave school, college or university and struggle to find a job. This reality has been reinforced by the fact that two new foodbanks are opening in Shettleston and Easterhouse. They will offer valuable assistance to people struggling

to put food on their tables during these difficult times. Whilst rightly congratulating the work employees and volunteers have been carrying out in our area, we must do more to help people struggling in the current climate. Too many people are turning to foodbanks because of low incomes, benefit delays and debt. This dramatic rise is a cause for concern for all of us and the reality is that the UK Government has done nothing to help people suffering food poverty. Since the Tory led coalition took over, long-term unemployment has risen by 517% and is continuing to rise in the east end. There is a will in this community to get back to work, but this is impossible if opportunities are not available. If Labour has been in power across the UK, we would have tackled this problem head on with a Jobs Bill to get the 17,000 Scots who have been unemployed for more than two years back to work. We would have introduced an Energy Bill to tackle

rip-off energy companies and ensure Scotland’s over 75’s were put on the lowest tariffs. We would have offered real solutions to help people in Glasgow East. The reality is that Scotland is being let down by two Governments who aren’t taking the action we need to get us back on track. We need more than our governments pointing the finger of blame or making promises for the future, we need action now. People in the east end of Glasgow deserve better than a Government who stands back and points the finger of blame at someone else. It is time we faced a reality in Scotland – as important as the referendum debate is, there are many more problems where people across Scotland are rightly demanding action, and they need more than their governments pointing the finger of blame or making promises for the future, when people need action now.

It was great to see that next year’s Commonwealth Games will be one of the most accessible ever, as details of the ticketing programme were announced earlier this week. Organisers have promised that two thirds of tickets will cost £25 or less, with admission to many events starting at only £15. In addition the cost of a ticket includes access to public transport in the area on the day of the event. Whilst the cost of live sport is often a barrier to involvement, these

prices look set to ensure that many more people will be able to watch the games live. The organisers are working hard to ensure that he games are a real success, but that success is measured not just in financial terms, but also by the involvement and support of communities across Glasgow. Anyone who has driven past the venues in the East End will be aware that terrific progress is being made and I am delighted that the work is still on course to be completed

on schedule and within budget. I am lucky enough to have seen the Velodrome in action and it really is superb. The investment that hosting the games has brought is a real boost to Glasgow and I know that they will bring about a real pride in our city and leave us with world class sporting venues for the future. As ever, if you wish to contact me about any issue please do not hesitate to email me on [email protected] or call my constituency office on 0141 357 2739.

I was privileged to attend the launch of United with Labour in the East End of Glasgow this week. The former Prime Minister Gordon Brown spoke alongside Scottish Labour Party Leader Johann Lamont MSP and Deputy LeaderAnas Sarwar MP about Labours positive reasons for keeping the union between Scotland and our friends and relatives in England and Wales. The strength of feeling about this issue is incredibly strong as 100s of people crammed into hear the message that Scotland is stronger as part of the United Kingdom and what we need is a strong Scottish Parliament in a strong UK.One such example where working together as a family

in the UK has been a success is the NHS. It was only because of a Welsh Health Minister, Nye Bevan, that we have a health service free at the point of use for every citizen in the UK. And the old age pension was the introduced by an Englishman, but is a benefit enjoyed by pensioners across the UK today. A very important figure in Glasgows political history is John Wheatley. When he introduced his housing act in the 1920s it wasnt just to provide decent affordable homes in Scotland. It was designed to help working people escape the poverty in the slums across the entire of Britain and Ireland. Opponents of the UK say that Scottish people are somehow

more interested insocial justice than people in the rest of the UK. As these examples show, that is simply a lie. The reality is that we achieve far more working together than we could ever achieve individually. The campaign to break up Britain doesnt know the answer to simple questionslike whether or not we would use the pound in a separate Scotland or whatthe terms and conditions of our EU membership would be.It is little wonder that when I am out campaigning in my constituency, there is little appetite for abandoning our friends and neighbours in the rest ofthe UK.

Increase in Acquisitive Crime

Golf Clubs Targeted

East Dunbartonshire has recently experienced an increase in acquisitive crime to properties in particular Golf Clubs in the Milngavie and Bishopbriggs areas. Perpetrators have gained entry to the premises by various means and on one occasion blocked access to the premises using items and debris from the surrounding area to prevent access whilst they were committing their crime. Quantities of money have been taken from the premises and Police Scotland would urge businesses to increase their vigilance and security measures taking care not to leave any quantities of money or other valuables on the premises or ensure they are secured in a safe.

Tools Stolen from Vans

East Dunbartonshire residents are also urged to remove all valuables from their vehicles in particular works van following incidents of tools, including high value power tools, being stolen from vans in the Bishopbriggs area between 19 April 2013 and 24 April 2013. During the night of 23 April 2013 in Viewfield Road a ford transit van was broken into however no items could be stolen from this van. On the night from 21 April 2013 and 22 April 2013 a van in Cherry Place, Bishopbriggs was targeted with a large quantity of high value items stolen from within. Morar Crescent, Bishopbriggs was also targeted during this period and various items of high value tools stolen. It is imperative that tools and valuable are removed from vehicles overnight and not simply hidden and secured within. Don’t leave yourself open to becoming a victim to this type of crime. Inspector Donald Leitch of Kirkintilloch Police Office said ‘I would urge local residents to increase their vigilance and security measures and also report any suspicious activity they may be witness to in their local area. We have increased patrols in the area in an effort to catch those responsible and prevent any further crimes of this type occurring’. If you have any information regarding these incidents please contact your local police office using the non-emergency number 101 or alternatively telephone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be maintained.

Drive to Tackle Bogus Workers in East Dunbartonshire

East Dunbartonshire Council’s Trading Standards Team and the Police Service of Scotland are once again working closely to ensure that any bogus workmen

attempting to operate within the area are proactively tackled and that the public are kept safe.To this end, another year long action plan has been developed to run through 2013. This follows on from the successful joint operation conducted last year. There will be regular joint patrols being conducted in marked Police vehicles where outdoor home improvement traders will be challenged to ensure they are genuine. Not all doorstep callers are bogus, many are honest and genuine providing a valuable service; however some are not and can be extremely persuasive and often use dubious techniques to clinch a sale. It is essential that individuals who choose to purchase goods or services on their doorstep know what to look out for. When a doorstep seller visits your home –1)Always ask to see the caller’s identification and examine it carefully2)Does the work really need to be done? It may be difficult for you to check if the repairs are really needed, for example loose slates. Bogus callers hope to panic you into letting them do the work3)Ensure you obtain 3 separate quotes for any work you are considering and discuss the quotes with trusted family or friends4)Never sign a contract or agree to have work done until you are sure of the consequences5)Ensure the trader has notified you in writing of your right to a 7 day cooling off period6)How good is their work? Ask them what work they have carried out locally and try to talk to these people to establish if they were satisfied with the quality of work done7)Ensure that you get a receipt for any payments made8)Keep all documents relating to the work9)Make sure you get the full details of the trader including name and address, without this you will find it difficult to take legal action in the event of a dispute10)Do not feel pressurised into getting work done, these people are not your friends and are being paid for being there, if you are feeling intimidated or pressurised please call Trading Standards11)Don’t agree to have work done by people who call at your home uninvited advising that they are in the area today/tomorrow only12)Do not accept any offer from the trader to give you a lift to the bank to withdraw money in order to pay him cash for work he has carried out13)Don’t be afraid to ask the sales person to leave Thieves won’t go to the trouble of breaking in if they can just knock and be invited in, so always be on guard when anyone you’re not expecting turns up at your door. Bogus officials may be smartly dressed and claim to

be from the Council Department, Health Authority or from one of the utility services. Remember it is easy to put a suit on or make a uniform up. Their aim is to talk their way into your home to see what they can steal. Bogus dealers may offer to buy your antiques, furniture or jewellery at what seems to be a good price. Chances are they are trying to trick you into selling something for a lot less than it is worth. Never believe a casual speculative caller at your door. Be aware of prospective bogus gardeners who may approach you with regards to gardening work. They may take money before completing the work or charge exorbitant fees and demand money for work not completed. Insp Donald Leitch, Kirkintilloch Police Office, said:”All of this seems a lot of information to take in, but it is good advice to protect yourself and your property against those who are intent on taking advantage of an open door or a trusting nature. One crime of this nature is one too many and often the victims are the most vulnerable in the community. We would urge anyone with information on those carrying out this kind of crime or who sees anything suspicious to report it to the Police as soon as possible.” East Dunbartonshire Council’s Trading Standards Department are now working in close partnership with the Construction Licensing Executive (CLE) to give consumers access to a database of approved tradesmen. If you are considering having work conducted on your home visit the CLE website at www.constructionlicensing.co.uk for details of local approved tradesmen. If you believe bogus traders to be operating in your local area contact your local police office on non-emergency number 101 or in the case of an emergency dial 999.

Community Policing Surgeries – Come tell us your concerns!

Shettleston Community Policing Team are working together with other partners and the public to improve the local environment and quality of life within the community. A monthly police surgery will be held at Parkhead Library on the fourth Thursday of each month starting 23rd May 2013 from 6.30pm to 8pm. This is an opportunity for members of the community to attend and discuss any new or ongoing issues with local community police officers. The officers will also give an overview of the local policing plan in the area and would like to encourage the public to come along and meet them.

Milton Drug Seizure

At 2200hrs on 30 April 2013 a 37 year old male was arrested following officers on patrol in the Milton area of Glasgow observing him acting suspiciously. On speaking with the male he became abusive towards the police witnesses and was found to be in possession of a quantity of heroin to the street value of £3660. The male was charged with various offences including attempting to pervert the course of justice and offences under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. The vigilance of the officers involved has clearly prevented a large quantity of drugs being circulated in the area by the male.

TWO MEN SERIOUSLY ASSAULTED – MARYHILL

Police at Maryhill are appealing for witnesses after two men were stabbed on Thursday 2 May 2013. Around 0950hrs on 2 May 2013 police were called to a report of two men with injuries in Gorston Street, Glasgow near to the Asda Superstore. The injured men, aged 32 and 33, were conveyed by ambulance to the Western Infirmary where they have been detained suffering from stomach and back injuries. Hospital staff described their conditions as serious but stable. Detective Inspector Andy Edward at Maryhill is appealing for witnesses. He said: “At this time, we still have to interview the victims and our enquiries are at an early stage. Both men were found in Gorston Street, Glasgow near to the Asda Superstore but we have yet to establish where the assaults took place. “A man was seen hanging about in the area and he may be able to assist in our investigation. He is described as: white male, approx 5’6” – 5’7” in height with shaven head. He was wearing a royal blue puffa style bomber jacket.

“Anyone who saw the assaults or has any information which may assist this enquiry is asked to telephone the CID at Maryhill on telephone number 01415323816 or your local police office on non-emergency number 101. Alternatively telephone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be maintained.”

Demolition of Historical Red Road FlatsA historical landmark of Glasgow’s skyline has undergone its next phase of demolition following a major police operation involving over 80 officers. The latest phase of the demolition took place at Birnie Court Sunday 5 May 2013 which drew crowds from the local area. Through a joint policing plan with the local council the event was run successfully and safely and can be remembered for years to come by all. The Red Road flats were often known for and associated with high levels of violence and crime and will certainly not be forgotten by the local police officers!

Road Safety Campaign!

A major operation has been ongoing across the North and East end of Glasgow to improve road safety and aims to protect our local communities by focussing on the use of motor vehicles and those who commit offences on our roads. The operation targeted those involved in Serious and Organised Crime and other criminal behaviour in order to disrupt them as they use vehicles in the commission of their crimes including the carriage of weapons, drugs, stolen property and the proceeds of crime. Illegal use of motor vehicles has a negative impact on road safety with uninsured drivers being five times more likely to be involved in

road crashes and also statistically more likely to be involved in criminal activity. The campaign has seen a total of 5 drunk drivers arrested, 19 people arrested for crimes under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, 2 arrested for possession of knives, £18000 of stolen property recovered and 4 males arrested in connection to that and 7 motor vehicles removed due to having no insurance. In addition to this hundreds of road users were issued fixed penalty notices in relation to motoring offences and vehicle defects. A successful campaign keeping the people of Glasgow safe on our roads through the robust enforcement of the law!Victory for Police Scotland over North Glasgow Bravehearts!!!!! North Glasgow Bravehearts cricket team suffered their first defeat at the hands of Police Scotland recently! The newly formed Police Scotland Cricket Team (formerly Strathclyde Police Cricket Team) took on the North Glasgow Bravehearts in Springburn Park. North Glasgow Bravehearts are a community cricket team made up of refugees and asylum seekers which has been created to help their integration into the local community. The match was attended by representatives from the Scottish Refugee Council and the North Glasgow Integration Network and due to the success plans are underway for future matches. Police Scotland won the game by 10 wickets after chasing down the score of 120 in 15.4 over’s without losing a wicket. The Bravehearts had scored 119 for 9 in twenty over’s. A great day was had by all and both Police Scotland and the North Glasgow Bravehearts are looking forward to their next match against each other.

GLASGOW East Rugby Club are aiming for another boost by developing more grassroots talent. With a new Adults section having been formed within their set-up, Founder Member Peter McEwan has rightly been praised for his initiative in starting GERC some eight years ago, by current First Team Head Coach Noel McBrearty. To The Sports Editor. As recreational and competitive cycling continues to grow in popularity, it is heartening to see the recent Lake APR Event taking top billing on the back page of Issue 104, and reflects well on the spread of sport coverage in your section of the Re-Gen. WEST TARGET DOUBLE SILVERWARESYFA West chiefs will target success at two Inter-Region Cup finals next month. Both the Under-15 and Under-16 age groups have emerged from games within the West Conference, and now await a double-header against South East - table-toppers from East Conference fixtures - on Sunday, June 9. The younger squad - needing a clear three-goal victory against hosts Central Region - netted twice inside 16 minutes at Airdrie Sports Centre. Primescout Man of the Match, Michael Kennedy, flighted a 10th minute free kick towards the back post, and Matthew Lamont outjumped everyone to head home. Five minutes later, a delightful move carved out their second. Ryan Shields and Kennedy were involved in the link-up play, and this time Scott Russell made no mistake. After West custodian Fallon denied the homesters, Central conceded a third goal. Ryan Shields collected Matthew Beckett’s pass, and he displayed enough composure to go around the advancing goalkeeper before

finding the net. Surprisingly, West took their foot off the pedal after half-time, and Central threw caution to the wind. The visitors endured a nervous final 10 minutes - including two free kicks which fortunately produced poor attempts on their goal. The Under-16s can look forward to a fourth consecutive final at this level after beating South West 2-1 on Ayrshire soil. Needing only a draw, Kevin Lavelle cracked home a dipping 20 yarder after three minutes, but seven minutes into the second half South West were back on level terms thanks to a soft penalty kick award. With the match opening up - chances were created at both ends - West substitute Craig Cowan got himself on the end of a cross from Aarron Graham and directed his header into the net off a post after 72 minutes. Meanwhile, the West Region Under-19 squad are undertaking a two-day Newcastle Tour. After meeting up at Hampden Park on Friday, May 24, they will play Whitley Bay F.C. Academy, and Newcastle Benfield, who are local league and cup winners.

Head Coach Iain King and his backroom staff have already been impressed with the talent on view at training sessions and friendly games against Boys’ Club and Pro-Youth teams. The latest encouraging signs came during a 5-2 win against Motherwell F.C. (2000 team) at K-Park Academy, East Kilbride. Three 30-minute periods were kicked-off in style, when Steven Robertson slid home their opening goal, and a Scott Simpson cut-back was finished by Andy Dallas. Robertson added No 3, and although ‘Well reduced the leeway after a raft of changes, normal service was resumed through Alberto Vezza and Kyle McDonald on the hour mark. Motherwell netted a second goal in the final 30 minute slot, and Fir Park Head of Children’s Football, Paul Burns, was very impressed with their hosts.

He said: “I think they will do us proud in the Denmark Cup. “It was heartening to see the West boys look to play possession football all the time, and play their way out of trouble.” Iain King revealed: “The players are progressing and their discipline in playing to the system we have set out has been excellent.” Meanwhile, West Region Under-19s stunned Drumchapel United Under-21 with a 5-3 friendly victory at Braehead. Matt Humphries (2) and man of the match Paddy Woods netted first half goals. United struck twice on the re-start, but Humphries raced clear to complete his hat-trick. Drumchapel replied again, and Kyle Gallacher wrapped up an excellent display with a fifth West goal.

KYLE GALLACHER... wearing No 17 blue shirt, netted for the SYFA West Region in their 5-3 victory against Drumchapel United.
