Leading the way with an award of £206,760 was Milnbank Housing Association, who have recently purchased mulching lawnmowers to assist with environmental improvements as part of the association’s Sustainability Strategy. These machines recycle grass clippings by finely cutting and re- cutting the grass concealing cuttings within the standing grass which then will decompose thereby feeding the soil. This is only a small part of the environmental work the association is involved in and Playbusters in Parkhead are another worthwhile environmental project deservingly awarded almost £150,000. Playbusters regularly appear in the Re-Gen promoting environmental issues such as the excellent work they are involved in with local food growing in conjunction with local nurseries in the East End. The Climate Challenge Fund is all about supporting communities to tackle climate change by reducing their carbon emissions. Over 250 communities have been funded and are working hard to deliver carbon emissions reductions . This new award for Shettleston will allow the SCGP to reach out to other local organisations and businesses encouraging people who drive to work in the area to consider carbon reduction measures like driving less and walking or cycling to work. For driving “die-hards” the project will be promoting car-sharing and eco-driving which can reduce the fuel bills as well as the carbon emissions. Other organisations and projects in the East End receiving awards include Dalmarnock Community Centre, Thenew Housing Association, Glasgow Bike Shed and Garrowhill Primary School all of whom are continuing to spread the message that in looking after the environment right now, we will eventually be looking after our children’s future. Minister welcomes first tenants back into Winget homes

HOUSE PROUD: From left, GHA Gordon Sloan, Winget tenants Rod and Margaret Quinn and Housing Minister Alex Neil.

HOUSING and Communities Minister Alex Neil has helped Glasgow Housing Association tenants celebrate the transformation of the first Winget homes. The houses in Carntyne had been declared ‘structurally defective’ until GHA agreed a major programme of works to give them a long-term future. Structural work is being carried out on the homes in Carntyne in phases over the next four years. The 600 GHA tenants who live in the Winget properties are also benefiting from new roofs, central heating, new kitchens and bathrooms and re-wiring and environmental improvements. The first stage of the works, which began late last year, has seen contractors City Building LLP work on 10 blocks, involving 34 properties, with 21 tenants decanted to temporary homes. Mr Neil helped the very first of the tenants celebrate moving into their upgraded homes today (Tuesday March 15) and spoke to other residents who will shortly be moving from their decant homes back to refurbished properties. The Minister said: “I am pleased that GHA is delivering for tenants by providing quality, affordable housing across Glasgow. GHA has invested heavily in refurbishing these houses in Carntyne and ensured a smooth transition for tenants moving back into their homes.”

Tenant Margaret Quinn, 63, a retired school janitor has just moved into her refurbished Winget home at 41 Abbeyhill Street with husband Rod. Maragret said: “We’re very excited about living here. The house is fantastic, so warm so well soundproofed too. “The neighbours are really nice and have made us feel welcome already. There’s such a buzz about the area – we’ve even invited people passing in the street to come in and have a look at our new home.” GHA Chair Gordon Sloan, himself a Winget tenant, said: “This is an exciting day and the culmination of a lot of hard work by residents and the Winget Strategy Group which has campaigned long and hard for this work to be done.“I am delighted the first tenants have moved back into these fantastic-looking homes.“With work on the foundations, the structural improvements, new roofs and floorboards and new kitchens, bathrooms and re-wiring they really are like brand new homes.” During the decant process GHA staff are carrying out regular home visits with tenants, arranging the re-direction of mail and other essential services. Tenant Agnes Mackie, 89, was decanted late last year while work is carried out to her home. Agnes said: “GHA staff have been great during the decant– they couldn’t

have done any more for me. They did everything – packed and unpacked, re-directed my mail, even took my curtains down for me. It really was excellent. I’ve found such kindness here. “I’ll be moving back in the next few weeks and I’m really excited.” Willie Docherty, managing director

of City Building, said: “I am delighted City Building has been able to use its all-trades construction experience and local apprentices to good effect on this important project to restore this area of Carntyne. “I am sure the residents moving back into their homes will be delighted with their extensively refurbished

properties, which include kitchens manufactured at one of Europe’s largest supported employment facilities, Blindcraft.”

The full package of works to the Wingets is expected to cost around £38million and should take around five and a half years to complete.

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

THE proposal to re-open the historic Olympia Theatre at Bridgeton Cross has received a double boost thanks to a near £1m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the decision by Clyde Gateway to award a contract worth £5.4m that will allow re-development work to begin later this month. The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) which provided £51,000 towards the initial feasibility study that looked at the possibility of re-opening the Olympia, has now approved an additional grant of £910,000 towards the overall costs of just under £10m. This contribution allowed the Clyde Gateway to move forward and seek tenders for the main works contract for the re-development. Colin McLean, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Scotland, said: “The Olympia Theatre is at the heart of the Bridgeton community, a symbol of its history and identity that cannot be replaced. The immense public support for this project is testament to its place in people’s hearts. We believe that breathing new life into it through restoration and redevelopment will not only re-establish it at the centre of community life but will also make a marked contribution to the ongoing regeneration of the East End of Glasgow, an area long-recognised for the challenges it faces. It demonstrates how a heritage building while providing an important link to a community’s roots can also be adapted for the needs of today.” The contract to re-develop the Olympia has been awarded to the Glasgow-based firm of CCG who were successful following a competitive tender process. CCG will move on-site by the end of March and complete their work by September 2012. As part of the community benefits clauses

insisted upon by Clyde Gateway in all of its main contracts, CCG will provide a minimum of nine local residents with jobs or training places. Councillor George Redmond the local councillor for the Bridgeton area and Board Member of Clyde Gateway said “The plan to re-open the Olympia has been described by a number of locals as the best thing to happen in Bridgeton for decades. It is all linked into the continued transformation of the area and very much part of the wider legacy from Glasgow hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The Heritage Lottery Fund clearly share our belief in how significant and important this project is and their contribution of the best part of £1million to the Olympia has been vital to our efforts and has given a huge boost to East End of Glasgow. He added,”I’m also pleased that CCG, with their excellent track record in supporting local residents into employment and training, have been successful in winning the tender to carry out the main re-development works. It’s exciting to think that people who live nearby will actually be directly involved in the work that will bring this hugely important and symbolic building back into use.” The Olympia opened 100 years ago and was envisaged as Glasgow’s equivalent of the Palladium Theatre in London. It has served as a variety theatre, cinema, bingo hall and furniture storeroom before closing its doors in 1993. The building suffered major fire

damage in 2004 but in the intervening period the site had received planning permission to be be converted into flatted accommodation. Clyde Gateway bought the property in September 2009, and after a period of public consultation unveiled proposals to house a new state-of-the-art public library and learning centre together with a café on the ground-floor with the first-floor being dedicated to a training centre and new Headquarters for the governing bodies for amateur boxing and wrestling. The top two floors will be developed as commercial office spaces and the building will be in use for up to 16 hours a day, seven days a week. The proposals will also see Glasgow Life, in conjunction with Clyde Gateway, develop a different use for the current public library building on Landressy Street. A planning application has now been approved by Glasgow City Council and the re-development will see the retention of the historic façade behind which a new, environmentally friendly and energy-efficient building will be constructed. The new library will open upon completion of the work by CCG in Autumn 2012.

DOUBLE BOOST FOR LANDMARK EAST END BUILDING

Coffee Morning/Table Top SaleShettleston New Church at 679 Old Shettleston Road (Just beside Halfords) are hosting a Coffee Morning and Table Top Sale (like a Car Boot Sale without the cars), on Saturday (Tomorrow 26th March) from 10-00am till 12-30pm. Admission is only £2-00 and this entitles you to tea/coffee and a cake, (GREAT VALUE). Personally, I love going round these type of sales and you never know what you could find, so why not take a wee trip along and pretend you’re on “Bargain Hunt” or something similar.

Everyone is welcome and all proceeds are going to the Lighthouse (Building) Fund.

Tenants in three areas of the East End have voted to

transfer ownership of their homes from Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) to community based housing associations.

The ‘yes’ votes will result in the transfer of 1939 homes under the process known as Second Stage Transfer (SST). The results were: Calvay Stepforward Local Housing Organisation (LHO) - 82.5 per cent of the tenants who voted (56.4 per cent) supported the transfer of 383 properties to Calvay Housing Association. Milnbank LHO – 75.6% of the tenants who voted (51.1%) supported the transfer of 857 properties to Milnbank Housing Association. Moriehall LHO – 96.6% of the tenants who voted (64.8%) supported the transfer of 85 properties to Easthall Park Housing Co-op.

If Scottish Ministers give their consent, the legal transfer of homes will take place later this year. The latest ballots, in which tenants voted by post, text, phone or online, began at the end of February and ran for 21 days. GHA Chair Gordon Sloan said: “Our Second Stage Transfer programme is progressing well with thousands of tenants now having been given the chance to have a say on the future ownership of their homes. “We

are on schedule to complete all the agreed transfers, where tenants vote in favour, by early summer. I wish all the tenants who voted in these latest ballots every success in the future.”

Peter Howden, Calvay Housing Association Chair, said: “We are very pleased to have received such a resounding vote of support from the GHA tenants. Our committee and staff would to thank the tenants for placing confidence in us and we look forward to working with them in the years to come to build a better Barlanark.”

John O’Donnell, Chair of Milnbank Housing Association, said. “We are delighted

with the result and appreciate the efforts of everyone who helped make this happen. In particular, I would like to thank our Committee and especially the LHO Committee Members for their resolve in seeing through what has been a long and sometimes difficult process. We are now fully focussed on making sure we justify the faith placed in us by the tenants who voted to transfer to Milnbank HA.”

John McMorrow, Director of Easthall Park Housing Co-operative, said: “The Housing Co-operative is extremely pleased to have received such an emphatic ‘yes’ vote in favour of transfer. We look forward to delivering on our promises to tenants.”

Sizzling Suzie’s Sunday Roast

Well looks like I spoke too soon. Snowing, rain, sleet gusting winds. Oh well the sunshine was nice whilst it lasted. I bought a snow scoop last week and hubby laughed. Who laughed last when we used it the very next day? Although the wean thought it was a new sledge for him and insisted on being dragged round garden on it. heehee. Roast dinners frighten lots of people especially my pal who I won’t mention (Diane in Craigend) who gave her hubby and weans sausage roll and beans for their Sunday dinner. So this week I am giving you the perfect roast chicken dinner recipe that even she can do... There is no parboiling of the roasties or any of that, although they do come out crispier and fluffier if you do. Timing is the key so have your timer set and you won’t go wrong.

Perfect Roast Chicken Dinner

1 ChickenPotatoes peeled and quartered2-3 sweet potatoes peeled and halved ( kids love them and they are packed with vitamins)3 carrots peeled and cut in quarters lengthways1 large head of broccoli trimmed and cut into florets.

Remove string from the chicken and untuck the legs from the cavity. Preheat oven to 180c Pour 2 tbsp of oil into a large roasting dish . Add the potatoes, carrots and sweet potatoes. Shoogle them round to coat them well in the oil until they are shiny. Add salt and pepper to season them. Rinse the chicken in cold running water inside and out. Rub a little salt over the bird and drizzle with a little oil. This makes for crispy tasty skin. Place the chicken in the middle of the veg. Roast in oven for 20 min per pound plus 20 min. So a 3 lb chicken will cook in 80 min. Set timer for 30 min

Peel and quarter extra potatoes for mashing and leave soaking in cold salted water. Same with the broccoli leave it in a pan of salted cold water. After 30 min open oven and remove oven dish. Set on stove top. Lift bird out onto a clean plate and using a spoon or spatula loosen veg and shoogle round . Upturn the bird so any juices run out over the veg. Put chicken back in with the veg and back into the oven. Reset timer for 30 min. After another 30 min repeat process. Drain chicken over the veg and shoogle it round. Put back in oven. Now put the potatoes on to boil. Check after 20 min and if they are almost cooked leave the lid on and switch off. Now put broccoli on to cook. After 10 min remove chicken from oven and place on a plate. Pierce under both of the thighs to ensure juices run clear. Put the roasted veg onto a clean tray and put back in the oven to crisp up whilst you make the gravy and mash the potatoes. Drain potatoes and broccoli. Mash the potatoes with some butter and taste to ensure they are well seasoned. Pour or spoon most of the oil out of the roasting dish. Add cold water to the pan and scrape of all the sticky crusty bits stuck to the bottom. Put into a clean pot and bring to the boil. Add some of your favourite gravy mix or make up some original bisto with a little cold water. Add this, stirring all the time to avoid lumps. Juices will have drained onto the chicken plate. Add this to your gravy. Ok your time is up.. serve up onto warmed plates. The perfect roast in 80 min.

After all that cooking you’re allowed a shop bought pie with some tinned custard for pudding.

Don’t forget to boil up the leftover chicken carcass. Remove bones Add chopped carrot, a chicken stock cube and a handful of rice for a braw broth on Monday.

Enjoy!

GHA volunteers man the phones for Comic ReliefTHEY came from all over GHA – Vicky Pollard, Graeme Sou-ness, Supergirl and Penelope Pitstop, among others – for another memorable night in aid of Comic Relief. For the second year in a row GHA staff volunteered to take calls from their Customer Serv-ice Centre in aid of the charity’s big night. Almost 150 volunteers came together to man the phones and take in donations for the popular charity. With 93 phones on the go, volunteers handled more than 2,500 calls and received around £100,000 in donations – even more than last year. And GHA staff didn’t stop there – they raised the terrific total of £2,500 via raffles and other fundraising activities. GHA Chair Gordon Sloan said: “There was a fantastic atmos-phere in the place on Friday evening. Everyone had a lot fun with the fancy dress but was also determined to do their bit for Comic Relief. “It was great to see the commitment from GHA staff in giving up their own time for a good cause.” With glitter, wigs and colour-ful costumes – and GHA direc-tors fetching tea and sand-

wiches – everything was set for another enjoyable night. At 7pm the phones went live, and at 7.01 Andy Skinner from GHA’s Maryhill office took the first donation of the night – £50 from a woman from Cumbria. From then on the phones never stopped, with GHA’s cowboys and clowns, lepre-chauns and cartoon characters talking donations from all over Britain. Calls came in from fur-ther afield too – from Ireland, France, Cyprus and even the

USA. Among them all were the lovely stories that show people at their best – the pensioner from Norwich who donated a fiver, the wee girl from Manchester who gave up her pocket money, and many others. The catering team kept the sandwiches and nibbles flow-ing and dozens of support staff were on hand to give call-handlers a break. And at midnight, as the

phones closed, there was a round of applause and cheering as tired volunteers finally came to the end of their shift. There were a lot of winners on the night – with Charlene Hoy from GHA’s Tollcross office picking up best fancy dress award as Lou from Little Britain. And with that volunteers from GHA’s concierge service were on hand to ferry tired staff home for some well-earned rest. They’ll need it for next year.

Big Jim Tries to Slim

ONE of Parkhead larger than life characters Jim MacKenzie decided to try and slim his rather large figure down to a manageable size and raise money for a great cause into the bargain. Jim, a board member of Parkhead Housing Association, felt that he could do with a reduction and to spur him on he got Parkhead Housing Association and some

local residents to sponsor him. Earlier this week Jim met up with John Ferguson(chairman) and Aileen McGuire (Director of Corporate Services) at the Parkhead Housing Association offices in Helenvale Street where he handed over cheques to the amount of £446.00 to Catherine McGrath of CHAS. Well done on your efforts Jim.

Domino Players are Spot on for Charity

Members of the Glasgow East Domino League met in the Clachan Bar in Barrachnie last Monday night not only to issue the forthcoming fixtures but to also hand over a cheque to the MacMillan Nurses as a thanks to them for their wonderful care towards one of the Domino team’s family members. Robert Cartwright of MacMillan Nurses Charity was on hand to accept the award which was raised by donating cash from a tournament organised by the Glasgow East Domino League.

A further cheque of £50 was donated on behalf of the Sandford family (a tremendous gesture).

We’re sure this donation will certainly be put to good use. Well done the Glasgow East Domino League.

The MacMillan nurses do a fantastic

indebted to the help and assistance they

MINISTER BACKS COLLEGE LOTTERY BIDSCOTTISH Government Minister, Angela Constance MSP, has personally backed John Wheatley College’s bid for a grant to enable it to develop further its ground-breaking programmes for Young People in or about to leave care. In recent years the College has introduced novel programmes for Young People in East Glasgow who have been in care. This initiative has been supported by other local public services including Glasgow City Council’s Social Work Services, Education Services and the East Glasgow Community Health Partnership. Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Education have, in recent months, recognised the College’s initiative as an example of ‘Sector Leading Innovative Practice’. The project has also been shortlisted for a Glasgow City Council ‘Flourish Award’. Over the last three years the College has involved over 150 young people

in its programmes. It has in that time also helped develop new standards for this type of provision. John Wheatley College was the first in Scotland to meet the new benchmark established by the Frank Buttle Trust (which has been specifically devised to protect the interests of young people leaving care). In her letter of support to the BIG Lottery Fund the Minister praised the College’s ‘exceptionally high standing in this field’. Ian Graham, the College’s Principal, said:“We are very grateful for the Minister’s interest in this project and her fulsome support for it. It is important that, at a time of widespread reductions in Public Spending, the development of programmes such as this which seek to assist Young People in care to make a smooth transition to adult life can continue. We hope that the BIG Lottery Fund will be able to assist us do just that.”

Eastbank Kids meet the Services

AS part of the continuing Community Policing Initiative throughout the East End Shettleston Police joined up with the other emergency services to visit Eastbank Primary School last week. The children love these days where they can mix with the police and fire-officers and see up close just what is involved when the services are required. The noise of the “Blues and Twos” reverberating around the playground, the spray from the fire hoses as they jet towards the rubbish bin targets and the eager children gathering around the horses, as their riders explain how

they manage crowds and even down to what the horses like to eat. Days like these serve a great purpose in linking the kids in with the services and in the long run give the children an insight as to just what is involved when the community require the assistance of the “999” brigade.

Can cook, will cook – local organisation dishes up recipe for successAN initiative to get more people eating healthy home-cooked affordable food is having a real impact on families in East Glasgow – and the results are all down to local people. The Community Food Programme, delivered by East End Kids & Co – a local charity passionate about making healthy food accessible to the community – is working with the North East sector of Glasgow City Community Health Partnership (CHP) to get more people cooking. One element of the project involves signing-up locals to its six-week cooking course. East End Kids & Co’s mobile kitchen has been clocking-up the miles demonstrating how to cook tasty meals for under £5 using healthy, easily-available ingredients. The courses are particularly popular with parents of young children and give them the confidence and experience to use their new-found cooking skills at home.

Karen, 23, mother of 2 children has been attending classes at Parkhead Nursery, she said: “I’ve really enjoyed the cooking course; it’s given me a lot of ideas about what I can cook at home to make sure my children are getting healthy-eating options. Preparing home-cooked food doesn’t take long and it can be done on a family budget.” As well as the cookery courses, East End Kids & Co is making sure we all get our five-a-day by selling fruit bags for 80 pence in North East sector’s six health centres. And, it’s responsible for making sure parents have all the right information and equipment for introducing solid food to their babies by hosting weaning fayres.East End Kids & Co became involved in the community-driven project by successfully winning a contract with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHS GGC) through The Scottish Government’s procurement portal, Public Contracts

Scotland (PCS).Mick McDermott, development worker with East End Kids & Co, said: “We’re really pleased to be working with Glasgow City CHCP to deliver the Community Food Programme. East End Kids & Co began in 1999 and is run by local people who believe in tackling food poverty. The Community Food Programme makes healthy food available to people on low-incomes and empowers them with the knowledge and skills to improve the future health of themselves and their children.“The feedback from participants on our cookery courses and the local people we meet by delivering the project has been fantastic. It’s very encouraging that small local organisations like ours are able to access contract opportunities with public sector bodies. Now we have been through the PCS tender process, we would definitely be keen to see if our experience and knowledge could be

used for other projects and will look out for similar contracts.”Douglas O’Malley, Health Improvement Lead North East Sector, Glasgow City CHP, said: “Improving diet and tackling obesity are complex problems so when we advertised the contract for delivery of the Community Food

Programme we were keen to work with an organisation which understood the challenges.“East End Kids & Co has a long-established history of engaging with the local community and developing relationships with people of all ages and circumstances. They are a highly-motivated

group and have been very successful in delivering all aspects of the Community Food Programme. By using PCS we were able to invite interest from a range of suppliers and ensure we worked with an organisation with the right experience to support the project, while delivering best value.”

SHETTLESTON Off-Sales Campaign commenced in the East end last November and Glasgow Community and Safety Services, in partnership with Strathclyde Police, Glasgow City Council Licensing Standards, Glasgow City Community Health Partnership, Glasgow Council on Alcohol Prevention and Education, FUSE youth club and licensees in the area, are working to reduce the accessibility of alcohol to under 18s and prevent agent purchase* in the area. Dedicated Police, Community

Enforcement Officers (CEOs) and mobile CCTV vans constantly operate in the area to deter this activity, whilst directing young people to alternative youth activities in the area. These include Glasgow Community and Safety Services’ ‘STUFF To Do’ initiative, which is based at Sandyhills Flats on Saturday evenings from 6pm until 9.30pm.

Licensees, with the support of Strathclyde Police, Licensing Standards and Glasgow Community and Safety Services, have now formed the Shettleston Off-

Last week a community event was held within Tesco at Shettleston allowing representatives from all the partner organisations to engage with members of the community to canvass their views on the campaign. The event was very successful and

the community indicated their welcome for this innovative approach. Next up is an all day event within FUSE, Shettleston Road on Friday (8th April) Stop Drinking – Start Thinking will further raise awareness about the campaign and encourage young people to participate in youth activities provided in the area.

The programme for the day will include the STUFF Media Bus, CCTV, Strathclyde Police, an Information Stall and fun activities from 12-3pm. Later on, from 5pm-9pm, there will be a DJ, Urban Dance, Live Band, Prizes, and IT Suite.* ‘Agent purchase’ is the purchase of alcohol by an adult on behalf of an under-aged person.

A community allotment where people can learn how to grow and cultivate their own food and help Glasgow reduce its carbon emissions and be greener was officially opened last week in Dalness Street Tollcross. The Shettleston Community Growing Project (SCGP) is a resident-led initiative which has seen the transformation of a derelict site into a multi-use space for residents, community groups and local schools. As well as giving local people an opportunity to get their hands dirty and learn to grow their own fresh produce, it will also act as a hub for community events and promote carbon and energy reduction initiatives. The project will also help save an estimated 1.286 tonnes of carbon a year and help local residents and school children learn about how the choices they make around food, recycling and energy can make a big difference in the global effort to tackle climate change. SCGP, which received just over £172,000 from the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund last year, was officially opened by Roseanna Cunningham, the Minister for the Environment and Climate Change. Glasgow City Council contributed a further £18,700 through Glasgow Greenspace and the Shettleston Area Budget. Both the Council, with four services involved, and Shettleston Housing Association contributed staff time to assist in the development of the project Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, Roseanna Cunningham, said: “The Shettleston Community Growing Project is a fantastic example of people working

together to make a real difference to their local and national environment and I’m sure it will be at the centre of community life for years to come. “Locally the benefits are there for all to see, with people getting the opportunity to grow their own food while developing their skills and creating a more sustainable community by transforming this piece of land. “Nationally The Climate Challenge Fund is giving Scotland’s communities the chance to reduce their carbon emissions . Over the last three years we have made £27.4 million available through the fund and we are extending this into the coming year with an additional £10.3 million. “While all the CCF projects, like this one in Shettleston are playing their part in reducing emissions they are also bringing wider social and economic benefits and improving the quality of life for many.” Bob Duckett, Chair of SCGP and Shettleston resident, who has been involved in the project from the very beginning, said: “The SCGP site is all we hoped it would be

and we are very grateful to the Climate Challenge Fund for making our idea a reality. It also shows what local people can achieve if they put their minds to it and have the right help and support. “As well as the obvious benefits of growing our own food, members and volunteers have the opportunity to make new friends and contribute to the local community. There is a sense of learning and fun with different generations working together with a common purpose. “The project provides an opportunity to gain skills that increase employment opportunities or encourage people to move onto further training and a career in areas like horticulture or grounds maintenance. It can also help overcome the barriers to work that some unemployed people face like lack of self-esteem.” Councillor Alistair Watson, who represented Glasgow City Council at the opening and is the convener of the Regeneration and the Economy Policy Development Committee, said: “The Shettleston Community Growing Project is a brilliant project and an excellent response to this challenge. It will help people in the area to reduce their carbon footprint by cutting food miles, help save them money on their food bills and encourage them to get out into the fresh air to garden and get some exercise. “I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all those in involved with the SCGP for a job well done”. Chris Cunningham, the Director of Shettleston Housing Association, said: “Shettleston Housing Association has been delighted to assist the SGCP with the growing project and has been happy to contribute the land for the allotment site. “The project will breathe new life into an area which had been a problem for some time. The local community and all the partners and funders have now ensured that this will happen. “We are now looking around our area to identify more sites that the SCGP could utilise and I look forward to seeing many more growing spaces and more opportunities for local residents to join in with this very worthwhile project”

Grow Green with Glasgow’s East End Awards

A packed Winter Gardens at the People’s Palace in Glasgow Green was the fitting venue for the first ever awards ceremony to recognise the organisations and projects who are working hard in the quest to protect the environment. Councillor Cathie McMaster welcomed the guests before handing over to the mainstay behind organising the whole evening Playbusters Project Manager Margaret Layden. Margaret works non-stop for the betterment

of the East end and it was fitting that her project was recognised by the Climate Change Funding Awards this week. Margaret spoke about the need for people to work towards making a difference through environmental and energy saving awareness and to

certainly could boast these qualities. First winner of the evening was the Shettleston Community Growing Project (see story on right of this page) and

the work they have done over the little time they have been in existence is tremendous. Dalmarnock Community Centre was the winner of the Home Energy award and Chairperson Kenny Faulds told a story which related just how much the Centre and the staff really mean to the local residents in the area. (A very well deserved award). Kate Buchanan at Golfhill Primary School won both the individual award for Waste Reduction and Reuse

and the Overall Grow Green Award on the night. Kate leads by example and the kids at Golfhill Primary are a credit to her and the rest of the staff as they beaver away in their “Eco committee” organising Eco weeks and taking part in the ongoing “Keep Dennistoun Clean” campaign amongst other environmentally friendly projects. The other winners on the night were The Glasgow Bike Shed and PR Print, both worthy winners.

STRATHCLYDE Police is urging elderly residents in the east end of Glasgow to be extra vigilant following recent reports of bogus workmen operating in the local area. In one recent incident, an elderly resident in Shettleston was defrauded of a substantial amount of money. It is believed the price paid was five times a realistic estimate of the value of work undertaken. The elderly and the vulnerable are prime targets for bogus callers, who can take on a variety of different aliases to try and get through the door, from workmen offering to carry out repairs to peoples’ homes, to those purporting to carry out surveys or collections for charity, but the message the police want to stress is ‘if in doubt, keep them out’. Sgt Gwen McEwan, from London Road Police Office is appealing for people to be on their guard. She said, “We are determined to stop people falling prey to bogus callers. Because of their age and vulnerability, elderly people are more commonly targeted by the fraudsters. Some older people keep purses, wallets and large sums of money, in their homes which makes this a lucrative crime. That’s why it so important for us to get our there and take the message to the people.

“I would urge anyone who may have information or who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the local area to contact London Road Police Office on 0141 532 4671. Alternatively CRIMESTOPPERS can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.” There are a number of simple measures which can be taken by householders to reduce the threat of becoming a victim, as follows:

always use the spy hole or window on the door to check who is on the other side before opening it.

caller what they want.

authenticity of the caller’s identification you can always ask them to call back later. Note their name and company as you can always phone the company they are from to check if they are genuine.

have a friend or relative with you when they return.

you are absolutely confident they are genuine.

Bogus Caller Warning

Following a spate of thefts of metal, Strathclyde Police would like information from members of the public concerning vans and flat bed lorries that are seen in local streets. PC Geoff Smith explained, “We are particularly keen to hear of vehicles that pick up scrap. There is a great deal of theft of metal in the area and these criminals are often involved in other types of door step crime. Please phone crime stoppers, if possible, providing registration numbers of vehicles, colour, vehicle type and description of occupants. These criminals often target elderly vulnerable people so catching these groups of criminals is of paramount importance to Strathclyde Police.Phone PC Geoff Smith on 0141 532 4671 or crime stoppers on 0800 555 111 or email [email protected] or www.crimestoppersscotland-uk.org

After officers from London Road stopped a vehicle in Fielden Street they found a large amount of cash inside. Approximately £81,000 worth of herbal cannabis was recovered and £18,000 cash was also seized in a subsequent house search.

A man has been arrested after police found herbal cannabis, with a street value of around £17000, at a property in Dennistoun.

Slimming In Tollcross is Oh – KayKAY-LOUISE joined a Slimming World class around a year and a half ago when a chance remark by a 3 year old child became the final straw on her quest to change her life. Kay-Louise knew in her heart she was overweight but as many others do she tried to ignore the fact and in doing so became even more depressed. Avoiding socialising, low self esteem because of ill-fitting clothes, sitting in separate rooms to basically hide from others, it all became too much and when she heard a young child making a remark about her “posterior,” Kay-Louise decided to do something about it. Contacting Slimming World was the best thing I ever did as I have now lost 2 stones. Following the Slimming World plan is one of the easiest things in the world and when you know it is doing you the “World” of good it makes it even more enjoyable. Now Kay-Louise is using all the experience she has gained over the past 18 months to start up

her own class in the Tollcross area and she is urging any of you who can relate to her story to join her. The great thing is that, having been through the whole gambit of putting on weight without really having been aware and then, shredding it with the assistance of Slimming World, to her delight, Kay-Louise wants to encourage others to do the same. “I’m really looking forward to the summer now,” said Kay-Louise after having missed out over the past couple of years. Joining Slimming World was the best decision I ever made and now I’ve got my life back and I aim to enjoy it to the max.”

GLASGOW CITY F.C. 0, BIR-MINGHAM CITY 5. ENGLAND In-ternationalist Dunia Susi grabbed a hat-trick in this friendly at Tory-glen. Birmingham, who led 2-0 at the break, struck again through Rachel Williams. Sally Stanton made it 4-0, and Susi completed her hat-trick.GLASGOW CITY F.C. 2, DON-CASTER ROVERS BELLES 0.CLOSE season signing, Christie Murray (ex-Celtic) was a fi rst half goalscorer at Petershill Park. Vic-tory was assured when Leanne Ross netted a second from the penalty spot.GLASGOW CITY F.C. 8, CELTIC 0. HOLDERS Celtic were crushed in the Premier League Cup at Pe-tershill Park. Three fi rst half goals from Leanne Ross (pen), captain Rachel Corsie and Emma Mitch-ell put City in easy street. Mitchell struck twice on the resumption to complete her hat-trick,and Lisa Evans blasted home a sixth. For-mer Celtic star Christie Murray had a goal disallowed, and also hit the bar and post. Jane Ross left ‘keeper Fay helpless with a 25 yarder, and Rachel Corsie round-ed off the scoring. An impressive display and result for Glasgow City, who will be going after their fi fth Premier League title this sea-son.PROVANMILL THISTLE 1, BU-DHILL AFC 3. BUDHILL came from a goal down against ten-man Thistle in the Scottish Sunday Amateur Trophy at Greenfi eld Football Centre. Shaun Gallacher put Provanmill ahead after 30 min-utes, but Lee McNicol equalised nine minutes later. Provanmill had a player sent off - the wrong decision in my opinion - and on the hour mark Peter Driscoll drilled home No 2, followed by a header from Davie Green in the 68th minute. Brian Berry missed a great opportunity to reduce the leeway, when he sent a penalty kick wide of the post after 78 min-utes. Note: Budhill went out 4-3 after extra-time in the next round against Edinburgh hosts LBC AFC. We could not obtain goals-corers from the club management.SHETTLESTON JUNIORS 0, IR-VINE MEADOW 4. TOWN were denied a place in the quarter-fi -nals of the Emirates Scottish Jun-

ior Cup at Greenfi eld Park. Big-spending Meadow had the cup tie won before the half-time whistle thanks to a Richie Barr hat-trick and a Brian McGinty penalty kick. VALE OF CLYDE BOYS’ CLUB 0, RANGERS SABC 1. A brilliant goalkeeping display by young Steven Mullen was the highlight of this First Division clash at Green-fi eld Football Centre. * Vale, with-out a competitive match, agreed to help hosts Lenzie Youth Club prepare for their Easter interna-tional youth tournament in France. The friendly fi nished in a 3-3 draw.FINNART 0, WOLVES B.C. 1 A second half goal earned Wolves Under-16s victory in the fi rst round of the McCutcheon Cup at Glas-gow Green.SYNGENTA 1, BAILLIESTON JUNIORS 2. TWO magnifi cent fi rst half strikes from Conner Bran-nigan and John Dickson gave Ton Under-16 another fi ne win in the Central Scotland F.A. League. Sygenta, who had earlier equal-ised, also missed a fi rst half pen-alty kick. CASTLEMILK DYNAMO 4, SANDYMOUNT AFC 3. LACK of fi tness told against ‘Mount, who still managed to take plenty of positives after leading 3-1 with 20 minutes remaining. Recent ad-ditions to the squad did well. Scor-ers: Steven Neilson (20 minutes), Kevin Griffi n penalty (35), and Leigh Morrison (55). VALE OF CLYDE 2, THORNIE-WOOD UNITED 1. WITH both junior clubs idle for the day, a friendly was arranged at Fullarton Park - and the Tin Pail enjoyed bragging rights thanks to a late goal. Chris Faulds put United ahead on 29 minutes. Jay Lang equalised fi ve minutes into the second half, and Aldo Mackin net-ted what proved to be the winner after 85 minutes.BROOMHOUSE BOYS’ CLUB 3, SOUTH CAMLACHIE YOUTH PROJECT 3. SCYP Under-21 won on sudden death penalty kicks - after trailing three times in the Golden Goal Trophy at Green-fi eld. Steven Douglas equalised on 32 minutes after House opened the scoring inside the fi rst quarter. Ryan Haxton made it 2-2 a minute before the interval. Some 15 min-utes from time, Ryan Whitelaw

headed a third equaliser. Both teams missed their 4th/5th spot kicks. Liam Cusack converted the fi rst effort in sudden death, and Kieran Dougan won the cup tie with a great save.BARRHEAD ARTHURLIE 0, SOUTH CAMLACHIE YOUTH PROJECT 9. A runaway league win for the Under-21s. Scorers: Brian Hughes (4), Darren Miller (3), Erald Disha and Ryan Hax-ton.KILWINNING RANGERS 2, VALE OF CLYDE 1. NINE-man Buffs took the points at Ab-bey Park. Kris Mitchell netted in 6 minutes, but Paul McBride equalised just before half-time. Michael Fulton made it 2-1 on the hour mark, and Vale missed a penalty kick with ten minutes remaining after former Tollcross ‘keeper Scott Wilson had been red carded. Replacement Craig Richmond came off the bench and brilliantly denied the visitors. Kilwinning’s Holding was ear-lier sent off, and after the match the Ayrshire club sensationally sacked manager Billy Thomson following recent comments in a local newspaper article.TOWER HEARTS 2, CAMPSIE BLACK WATCH 5. THE meet-ing of two Scottish Under-21 Cup semi-fi nalists produced seven goals at Toryglen. Tower set-tled well and took a 2-0 lead, but Campsie, with Jamie Darroch outstanding, were back on level terms by the interval. The visitors stepped up a gear and scored three second half goals.WELLHOUSE BOYS’ CLUB 3, CELTIC COMMUNITY 3. ONEof the best Under-16 games watched this season. Celtic went ahead with a good goal, but the pace and fi nish by Ki-eran Gibbens made it 1-1. The same player scored before half-time, and was behind a third goal. His superb pass found Jamie Halliday, who rattled in a 15 yarder. Celts were far from fi nished, and took advantage of defensive slackness. followed by an equaliser three minutes from time. A fair result overall, no bookings and well handled by the referee! League result: E.K.Caledonia 1, Wellhouse 5. No goalscorers available.

GANTRY GO NAP

Their talented Under-16 squad are through to the fi nal of the Inter-Region Cup following two excellent per-formances, and await East or South East. West travelled to Stenhouse-muir and recorded a 3-1 win against SYFA Central Region. Lewis Kinnaird gave them the best possible start with a 5th minute goal from Greg Marshall’s free kick, but Cen-tral took full advantage of some defensive slackness for their equaliser 15 minutes later. On the stroke of half-time, Kieran Galloway crossed for Marshall to volley No 2, and Kyle Doherty made it 3-1 from a Jamie Waddell pass. Less than a week later, West entertained South West Re-gion knowing another victory would clinch their place in the fi nal for the second consecu-tive year. Goalkeeper Alan Sharp de-nied the visitors an early lead, and that near miss was the wake-up call West required. Wellhouse star Stevie Kerr threaded a fine pass onto Lewis Kinnaird, who made no mistake.

Andrew McLennan almost added a second goal, but hit the post before South West equalised with a header from a corner kick. A half-time team talk and two West substitutions worked wonders. After Kyle Doherty and James McKennan went close, Captain Greg Marshall had better luck with a magnifi -cent long range shot. Victory was in sight when Josh McCallum cross and Kyle Doherty dispatched a volley into the net. Six minutes from time, the same player struck again. He was brought down for a penalty. The spot kick was diverted onto a post by the goalkeeper, but Doherty fol-lowed up to net the rebound. West Region Under-15 hold-ers failed in their bid to reach another fi nal, when they lost 3-1 against South West after previously defeating Central Region by the same margin. Meanwhile, Scottish Youth Football Association chiefs have confirmed semi-final venues for their Scottish Cup competitions - including two cracking Under-21 games this Sunday.

GLASGOW GIRLS F.C. Under-17s recorded four pre-season wins against Tullibody, Murieston, Hibs and Falkirk Ladies, while their Senior team received a bye in the League Cup fi rst round after Falkirk Ladies were promoted to the Premier League.

PRE-SEASON WINS

Surprise packets, The Celt-ic Boys’ Club, meet Tower Hearts at Greenfield Park, Shettleston, while record hold-ers Campsie Black Watch go head-to-head with Harmony Row - three-time winners in recent years - at Dunterlie Park, Barrhead. Kick-offs 2pm. How Tower would love to emu-late the squad which tasted cup success under the late Andy Morton, but Celts go into the match with plenty

of confidence. Last season, they reached the Under-19 quarter-finals, but lifted the Blackpool Cup, Challenge Cup and League Cup. Craig Fleming and Sean Viola netted the all-important goals in a superb 2-1 quarter-fi nal victory at Premier Division Drumchapel United.
