“THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS”

AS Christmas approaches and the New Year festivities are about to begin the Re-Gen would like to take this opportunity to look back on the year that’s about to come to a close in our last edition of 2010. We have seen a lot of changes over the last 12 months some good and some not so good but hey we are resilient in the East End if nothing else. The year opened with the Parkhead Dispersal still in force and according to the residents in the Lilybank and

Parkhead areas this had a big impact on the lives of the ordinary people in both areas. Thankfully some “Gang Members” took the opportunity to change their lives around during this time and do something positive with themselves, this resulted in the construction of a fantastic Garden and respite area in Barrowfield, designed and constructed by some of the local youths. In February, Michelle McManus launched a Domestic Abuse campaign from the Whiterose Community Centre in

Parkhead and the Re-Gen backed a local campaign by Baillieston mother Heather Mortimer to highlight a very worthwhile cause, that of Dyslexia Awareness. This is a cause which is now being looked at seriously by the Government as the link between Dyslexia and Inmates in our Young Offenders Institutions is becoming more and more prevalent . Much more needs to be done on this issue and the Re-Gen will continue to highlight this fact. There was an outbreak of raids on Bookmakers Shops

in the area during this period which resulted in talks between the police and the “bookies” to try and come up with a solution and this worked in part as various arrests were made throughout the area. Community Mourns Loss of Patricia McCrossanTRIBUTES were paid this week to a dedicated Glasgow community worker who died tragically at the age of 48. Colleagues, friends and politicians praised the commitment and compassion of the late Patricia McCrossan and described her untimely death as a huge loss. Patricia was Manager of the Glasgow East Community Planning team and always strived to enhance and improve the lives and prospects of people in the area. She loved her work so much she travelled to Easterhouse from her home in Dunoon every day and never complained about the lengthy commute. Her job involved balancing the priorities of Glasgow City Council, the various community planning partners including Health,Glasgow Life, Glasgow Community Safety Services, Strathclyde Police and others with the needs of the people in East Glasgow – a task she took to heart. In particular, she placed great emphasis on developing positive activities for young people, tackling violence against women and promoting community education. In her spare time Patricia, known to friends as Tricia, was appointed as a lay inspector of community education for the Scottish Government. She

loved to spend time with her husband, Jim, as well as her family and friends. Music and sailing were her particular passions. Patricia, who had been battling cancer, passed away at home on November 25. Councillor Jim Coleman added: “Patricia’s commitment and professionalism in her work were outstanding and she was very well respected. There is no doubt she made a real difference in the East. Her death is a real tragedy.” Bailie Catherine McMaster said Patricia launched collaborative working between organisations across Baillieston, Shettleston and Greater Easterhouse. She added: “Her humour and positive attitude supported team work for making things happen for our communities. She inspired us with hope for the future.” Jim Gray, Glasgow City Council’s Head of Democratic Services, said: “We are all deeply saddened by the untimely loss of our colleague, Tricia. She made a deep impression on all

those she worked with and her commitment to helping others was always apparent. She was a very caring and compassionate woman with a great spirit and love of life.” Partners at John Wheatley College said she brought a clear commitment to improving local Community Learning and Development services and consistently supported efforts to develop opportunities for communities in East Glasgow. Patricia’s funeral took place on Wednesday December 1. It ended with one of her favourite pieces of music - Eddi Reader’s version of the Robert Burns song “Ae fond kiss, and then we sever; Ae fareweel, alas for ever!”.

RAIL BOOST FOR EAST ENDTHE opening of the new rail link from the east end of Glasgow directly to Edinburgh is a huge boost for the area. The first trains with passengers started running last Sunday stopping at six stations in the east end of Glasgow: High Street, Bellgrove, Carntyne, Shettleston, Garrowhill, and Easterhouse. Along with the investment of £445 million in the M74 completion, the investment of £250 million in this rail link underlines the SNP’s commitment to Glasgow in general and the East End in particular, according to Prospective SNP Candidate for Glasgow Shettleston, John Mason. Both road and public transport need investment and these two projects together show that the SNP is committed to driving Scotland’s economy forward. Mr Mason travelled on the first train from Shettleston station at 8.15am last Sunday morning. The service left and arrived on time taking about an hour. He returned soon afterwards and again the journey went perfectly. Trains originating in Helensburgh and west of Glasgow used to terminate at Airdrie while

those from Edinburgh and the east stopped at Bathgate. But with the Airdrie-Bathgate link opened, direct journeys from Helensburgh to Edinburgh become the norm. The 24 km (15 miles) of new line are the longest domestic rail line with stations to be built in Britain for 100 years. John Mason said, “There has been a big emphasis on this project benefitting communities in North Lanarkshire and West Lothian as they are getting train services for the first time. And that is great. However, I reckon the east end of Glasgow is a major beneficiary of this new line. Because of the good

motorway links, our part of Glasgow has become an increasingly attractive area for people to live and work. But now we also have this excellent rail connection which allows us to travel east without going to Glasgow city centre. “With the SNP investing so heavily in road and rail to benefit our area, this has to give a real boost to long term jobs. Anyone setting up a new business or factory will find the east end one of the best areas to come to. Rich business commuters may have lost out on their airport rail link, but ordinary people in Glasgow are winning with this great new rail line.”

John Mason sets out from Shettleston to Edinburgh on the new line

Shock findings in Scotland’s first smoking in cars studySMOKING in a car exposes a child passenger to dangerous levels of poisonous particles … and even opening a window doesn’t protect them. These are the stark findings of a survey spearheaded by leading NHSGGC health experts. The findings are so stark that NHSGGC has launched a high profile campaign to persuade the thousands of Scots motorists who continue to smoke and endanger non-smoking passengers to make their cars “smoke free”. The study involved a child sized doll child being fitted in a car seat with the very latest smoke monitoring equipment attached at the doll’s mouth so that precise measurements could

be taken. The particles of tobacco poison were so high that they compared with the levels you would expect after being exposed to secondhand smoke in a busy smoke filled pub before the smoking ban. Brenda Friel, NHSGGC Senior Health Improvement Senior, told the Re-Gen: “No one would think twice about the dangers of taking a child into a smoke filled environment yet many drivers don’t realise the harm that can be done. Worryingly 15% of UK smokers smoke in the car with children.” The message is very clear, Do not smoke in cars when your children are present. Do not allow them to travel in a car with anyone who will smoke in the car. It is potentially damaging to

their respiratory health.” NHSGGC is giving away 10,000 car stickers bearing the slogan “Our car is smokefree” in an attempt to get the message across that smoking in cars is dangerous not only for people who smoke and their adult passengers but most importantly for children who have no choice but to be in these cars. Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects for a number of reasons including the fact that they breathe faster than adults and therefore inhale more toxins, their respiratory organs are still developing, they have immature immune systems and crucially they cannot remove themselves from the source of the exposure.

GLASGOW East MSPs have taken a 10,000 strong petition to the Greater Glasgow Health Board calling for a rethink on the proposed closure of Lightburn hospital. Margaret Curran, Paul Martin, Frank McAveety and local activist Gerry McCann took their fight to keep the medical facility open to the Health Board’s headquarters. They have also each made strong submissions to the Health Board after listening to local people’s concerns over the issue.Margaret Curran, MSP for Glasgow Baillieston and MP for Glasgow East, said: “The health needs of patients within the East End should be a priority for the health board. My constituents will have real problems accessing these key services if this proposed closure goes ahead.” Frank McAveety, MSP for Glasgow Shettleston, said:

“The consultation process was inadequate. Key groups were not included in the process. From the way in which the consultation was handled, it is clear that the Health Board had already made up their mind to close Lightburn.I am angry that yet again the people of the East End are losing a range of local services and are faced with utterly unsuitable alternatives.”

Paul Martin, MSP for Glasgow Springburn, said: “It is important we show the health board managers we value our local services and will fight to keep them here.“Not everyone can afford expensive taxis or is able to wait around for buses to the Royal Infirmary. “I want everyone in the East End to know we oppose the closure of this facility, which provides a vital service to our older citizens.”

East End MSPs Demand Action on Lightburn

prior to the re-development of the area and left it with no shops, the squad from the Dalmarnock Centre opened a Community Shop to serve the needs of the locals. May saw election fever hit the streets of the East End and Margaret Curran regaining the Parliamentary seat for Labour from SNP’s John Mason. Strathclyde Police went through major changes in this month as details were announced that there would be a new policing structure to cover the area which would involve a more positive way of sharing information and resources. These have now been implemented and we await to see if the improvements are forthcoming. In June a Fund-raising dance took place for a little girl called Isla who despite her young age had gone through much more than anyone would have wished due to her illness. The generosity of the good people of the East End came to the fore and with the cash that was raised Little Isla and her family were able to enjoy a nice holiday. We are glad to report that although still not out of the woods the wee lassie is doing well and she sends her love to everyone in the area. We’ll end this first part of the year’s review with a story that is dear to my heart as Swinton Primary School became the first school in Glasgow to be awarded the title of a UNICEF school. Lord Provost Bob Winters attended the ceremony held in the school and parents, pupils and staff all enjoyed a buffet and soft drinks to celebrate the event. Look out for more on the year gone past in our next issue.

The winter solstice on the 21st has a double edge to it as there is a solar eclipse at around 3am. This is an excellent time for cleansing away all negativity and

issues which no longer benefit you, it is also an excellent time to set your intentions for a positive 2011.

So here it is Merry Christmas, everybody’s havin’ fun. Look to the future la la la laa. Don’t you just love all the old crimbo songs playing on a loop on every radio station and in all the shops? I know I do. I dressed the tree last night with my wee one and we had a great time singing Jingle bells and when Santa got stuck up the chimney. He’s a little older this year and is really looking forward to Santa coming. It’s a true saying that Christmas is for the weans. I have to admit his excitement is contagious. One thing I’m not looking forward to is cooking. But Mr MarksandSparks have taken care of that. They have everything you need as do all the major supermarkets. All washed peeled and oven ready. The only thing you have to do is watch the clock to get your timings right. Leftovers are a different matter. So here are a few dishes to use everything up. I have tried to make them as effortless as possible. There is nothing wrong in taking short cuts sometimes.

LOCAL police in Shettleston along with Support Services are carrying out visits to Public Houses in the Shettleston/Tollcross areas as part of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. The officers attended 16 premises last week and thanks to the noses of the two “Sniffer Dogs” they were able to apprehend two males who were reported to the Procurator Fiscal under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Overall the Staff and Patrons at the public houses visited, welcomed this initiative and praised the

police in carrying out these visits and hoped it would continue. They can rest assured it will and with the dogs being able to determine those people who have been in contact with drugs very easily, those persons will be found out and prosecuted. Strathclyde police would like to thank both the Staff and Patrons who have

co-operated during these operations.

LOCALS GIVE THUMBS-UP TO NEW LOOK FOR DALMARNOCK STATION AREATHERE has been overwhelming support for proposals for Clyde Gateway to create a new space and revised lay-out around the soon to be refurbished Dalmarnock Station in Glasgow’s East End. A period of public consultation at three separate venues and extending over three days at the end of November saw 48 local residents turn up to look at drawings and potential designs for the creation of a new Dalmarnock Cross based around a hub of a the station and the new junction at Dalmarnock Road and the East End Regeneration Route which is currently under construction. Alison Brown, Project Manager at Clyde Gateway, said “There was clearly a strong wish to try and create a new space that will be safe, secure but provide a vibrant feel to the area. The changes to Bridgeton Cross around the historic Umbrella have set a benchmark for the area and it is

clear that those who came along to the exhibition want a similar level of quality for Dalmarnock.” The re-design of the road layout and the refurbishment of the station provide a unique set of circumstances to really design and build something a bit special. Residents have told us they would like an area where shops are provided, including a space which will provide community services and information, as well as a location where local events can be held.” “There were quite strong views expressed about landscape, public art, seating, lighting and general layout”, added Alison. “Above all else, it was the level of enthusiasm from local people that was particularly pleasing from Clyde Gateway’s perspective and so we will now establish a Community Steering Group and ask them to assist the Design Team in refining all of the concepts and ideas for the design. This was an approach

that that worked incredibly well at Bridgeton and we are delighted that to be able to do the same for Dalmarnock.” The membership of the Community Steering Group will be finalised early in 2011 and its first meeting with the Design Team will take place shortly afterwards. Clyde Gateway has plans to spend almost £2m to implement the improvements at Dalmarnock Cross and is also one of the four funding partners providing the £8m required for the refurbished railway station. The Design Team for Dalmarnock Cross is being led by the Glasgow office of Sheppard Robson, one of the UK’s leading Architecture and Planning consultants. The next stage of public consultation will be in mid 2011 as designs are developed, and subject to the necessary planning permissions being granted by the local authority and funding being in place, the work will be completed in late 2013..

CITY BUILDING REPORTS INCREASE IN BURST PIPE CALL-OUTS AS BIG THAW CONTINUES

One of Scotland’s largest construction companies has experienced an increase in burst pipe call-outs over the past two days. Glasgow City Council’s arm’s-length construction company City Building – which operates repairs and maintenance contracts for clients including housing associations, schools and private sector companies – has responded to 702 reports of burst pipes. In an average two-day period it receives just 102 burst pipe call-outs. It has also received 1700 gas call-outs since the

big thaw began two days ago and provided 1000 temporary heaters. The company has also bought “snow socks” for its fleet of gas vans, to enable it to reach vulnerable people in hard-hit areas. Over the past five days it has received 6500 calls to its hotline, 4000 of which have been classified as emergencies. In addition, the construction firm has drafted in plumbers from other areas of its business to meet round-the-clock demand for its repairs and maintenance services. And City Building employees

who could not make it to work at construction sites this week have helped grit pavements and shovel snow around health centres and schools in the Glasgow area. City Building managing director Willie Docherty said: “We’re pleased to be playing a small part in helping the people of Glasgow and the west of Scotland get back on their feet. “The disruption caused by burst pipes and the like cannot be underestimated and we will continue to work round-the-clock to meet our clients and their customers’ needs.”

Keep your water tank cosy, and insulate your pipes.

Have an emergency pack handy with matches, candles, a radio and a torch.

The Re-Gen, The Number One

Campaigning Newspaper

for the East End.

Furniture Mega-StoreOpens in QueenslieGLASGOW Furniture Initiative certainly caught the imagination when they began trading in the area. Rather than throwing old furniture and unwanted household goods out, GFI asked local residents to donate the goods to them so that they could re-cycle and find a new home for them. Not only has it helped low income families to furnish accommodation it also has saved over 1000 tonnes of unwanted goods going to landfill each year. Now thanks to the success of the venture Glasgow Furniture Initiative have opened a massive Furniture store in Blairtummock Road Easter Queenslie, (just off the number 43 Bartibeith Road Bus Route). The opening of the Centre gives local people the opportunity to buy essential household furniture at bargain prices on a grand scale plus have it delivered to their door for only a fiver. Chief Executive Robert Stewart and Operations Manager Robert Montgomery are delighted with the scale of the new facility and the flexibility they now have as a direct result of over 5,000

square feet of display space. Robert Montgomery told the Re-Gen, “In the past 12 months we have helped almost 5,000 Glasgow families either furnish or partly furnish their homes without running up big bills and that’s a record we are very proud of.” He continued, “The difference we can make to family budgets is considerable. Many people have to think twice about upgrading a worn cooker, wardrobe or suite and in today’s financial climate that is more understandable than ever. If people come into our centre they will find the staff ready and happy to help and if they don’t find the item they want on their visit we ask them to call us later and if it comes in we will reserve it for them at no obligation.” There is new stock arriving daily at the new store and with the extra space GFI can display it to show it off at its best giving people new ideas and furnishing solutions they might not have thought about previously. Chief Executive Robert Stewart is determined that potential customers understand the process involved before they buy an item, he told our reporter, “When we receive

something like a fridge or a washing machine for instance, we don’t simply give it a quick once over and then put it on sale. Every single item we take in is subjected to our strict tried and tested quality control and refurbishing system. Washing machines are serviced and tested by our dedicated white goods engineer. We actually plumb them in and run a diagnostic appraisal of them, fitting new parts as necessary and replacing any damaged shelves. Beds are steamed cleaned and thoroughly checked. We are not trendsetters but we are meeting a trend and a growing demand. As both Roberts’ say, “The initials GFI may stand for Glasgow Furniture Initiative but we see the initials as “GO FOR IT” as it sums up our team spirit nicely. The success of the Glasgow Furniture Initiative is only in its infancy and with the continued support of the people of the East End it will certainly flourish. Why not take a trip up to the new premises and see just what’s on offer for yourself, we’re sure you’ll find something that takes your eye.
