Putera Sampoerna Foundation 4th Quarter Report 2009
Letter From The Managing Director
As I write this letter, the Sampoerna Academies in Malang and Palembang
as well as the Sampoerna School of Education in Jakarta are reaching the
half year point of their operation. Within that comparatively short span
of time we have already begun to see the benefits of providing schools
and teacher training institutions to a consistent, international standard
of quality. Academy students have delivered outstanding performances
in international standard examinations and competitions. Students at the
School of Education have made similar achievements, including winning
titles in an English debating competition. These positive results are a
testimony to your support and foresight in making a social investment in
the education of Indonesia’s less fortunate yet talented youths.
We have been very fortunate to have received the commitments of donors
including PT HM Sampoerna Tbk., PT Sampoerna Agro Tbk., Altria Group,
Astro, Mobil Cepu Ltd., Deutsche Bank, Perum Pegadaian, Mercy Relief, Bank
Sumsel Babel, and ExxonMobil Oil Indonesia Inc. among other corporations
and also to have the support of committed individuals. Sustaining these
future leaders’ education remains a top priority and continued support is
welcomed.
We are also continuing to strengthen the Foundation’s Bait Al-Kamil - an
Alms Distribution Unit that channels alms for the education of economically
disadvantaged Muslim students. These efforts are part of our goal to produce
future Muslim leaders capable of competing in the global environment. This
newly founded Alms Distribution Unit has succeeded in distributing funds
to hundreds of student survivors of the Padang, Sumatera Barat earthquake
and of other underprivileged students in Rembang, Central Java.
To better support our endeavors, we have elevated the Foundation from a
philanthropic organization to a social business corporation. In the process,
we have received the ISO9001:2008 certification, which recognizes our
commitment to quality management and compliance with applicable
statutory and regulatory requirements.
The Putera Sampoerna Foundation is guided by the vision of a Pathway to
Leadership. By providing an educational framework tailored to developing
the best and brightest from among the country’s less economically fortunate,
we seek to build a pool of enlightened leaders who are intellectually, morally
and ethically dedicated to the greater good of society. The success of all
our endeavors depends on the support and encouragement of our many
committed partners. I would like to use this opportunity to acknowledge all
our donors. Thank you for making a difference every day to the future of
our country and to the quality of those who will lead it.

The Pathway to Leadership
Combining Finite Resources for Broader Social ImpactCompanies pursuing socially responsible activities do so in
the knowledge that their limited resources cannot solve all of
society’s problems. However, by focusing efforts on developing
future leaders from among Indonesia’s economically
disadvantaged students, companies can ensure that their
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts pay significant
long-term dividends.
Companies increasingly undertake CSR programs as a
component of business strategy, not simply to comply
with government regulations or as a salve to stakeholder
expectations. Forward thinking corporate leaders recognize
that their ability to grow their business in a sustainable
manner is intimately connected with the types of CSR activity
they undertake. While ad hoc community programs remain
relevant and sometimes urgent, programs of broader national
scope need to be given attention.
The Putera Sampoerna Foundation invites companies and
committed individuals to participate in programs that are
specifically designed to prepare quality leaders, who will
determine the future economic, social and political landscape
of this country. To do this, the Foundation has designed and
carried out the concept of the Pathway to Leadership.
The Pathway to Leadership cycle starts from and returns back
to the community. Following this path, the Foundation select
the top 5-10% of students among economically disadvantaged
students from the community and send them into our school
system, Sampoerna Academy schools, with the goal of
creating youth leaders. We also set up the Sampoerna School
of Education, aiming to first of all provide our school system
with qualified teachers and, secondly, create knowledgeable,
analytical, and socially responsible quality leaders who are
committed to giving back to the community.
By supporting these economically disadvantaged but
academically gifted students, companies can ensure that their
finite resources can make a broader contribution to social
wellbeing.
The future of this nation depends on the quality of its leaders
but, the emergence of such quality leaders rests on the quality
of their academic and social development. No one company or
organization and individual can address this challenge alone.
The Putera Sampoerna Foundation invites and encourages you
to be part of this initiative.
“...Companies can ensure that their finite resources can make a broader contribution to social wellbeing.”

Sampoerna School of Education Raises the Bar
A team of students from Sampoerna School of Education took
the winner’s trophy at a four-round English debating competition
organized by the Tarbiyah and the Education Faculty of Islamic
State University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah held on October 26-31,
2009. To win the competition, the students overcame more senior
home teams in each round. Two team members also won Best
Speaker titles in the first and second rounds of the competition.
Team members Anais Anais, Nur Hidayatus Syarifah and Endang
Sriwahyuni are still in their first semester at the Sampoerna School
of Education. Nevertheless they faced more experienced teams
on the topic of “Legalizing Prostitution” in the first round and on
“This House Would Stop All Foreign Oil and Mining Companies in
Indonesia” in the second.
In the semi-final, the School of Education team debated the
topic of “The Government Stole Medical Patent Rights to Save
the Population”. In the grand final they faced a team of fifth-
semester students from the Syariah Culture Faculty at UIN Syarif
Hidayatullah on the topic of “The Withdrawal of American Troops
from Afghanistan”.
Speaking after the event, Anais Anais said “We were very confident
that we would do well in this competition. The most important
thing for us was to introduce the Sampoerna School of Education
to a wider audience and show what we can do when we have the
chance to pursue our dreams.”
The Sampoerna School of Education has started to demonstrate quality outcomes not only in Indonesia but overseas as well. The success of the school’s lecturers in arousing international interest in The Teacher institute in China and the students’ triumph in an English debate competition at home have placed the School firmly on the map and raised awareness of the quality of its staff and, critically, the capabilities of its students.

The Putera Sampoerna Foundation’s support for financially
disadvantaged students is not limited to the Sampoerna
Academy but also extends to other high achievers in
Indonesia. In 2009/2010 academic year, the Putera Sampoerna
Foundation’s National Undergraduate Scholarship Program
awarded full scholarships for six qualified individuals, yet
financially disadvantaged, to pursue bachelor’s degrees in
engineering or economics. The scholarship covers registration
and tuition fees, book and living allowances, internet and
research allowances and graduation fees.
There were numerous scholarhip applications received by the
Putera Sampoerna Foundation. The applicants needed to follow
rigorous three-phase selection process held from the end of
October to November 20, 2009 that involved a paper-based
assessment to ensure that the applicants met the academic
and administrative requirements. Those who passed the first
phase were invited to follow the second stage of selection: panel
interviews and focus group discussions, to assess their integrity,
motivation, leadership, creativity, and communication skills. As
part of the final assessment, the Putera Sampoerna Foundation’s
team visited the residences of the top performers to verify data
and to confirm their economic background. After passing all these
processes, six students were selected as the Putera Sampoerna
Foundation Undergraduate Scholars for the 2009 intake.
Three of the scholars – Tri Pandu Mulya Permana, Arrina
F. Agwizelly and Wilda Siska Dewi – are pursuing their

Putera Sampoerna Foundation Discusses Teacher Certification Law
In conjunction with Teacher’s Day on November 24, 2009, the
Putera Sampoerna Foundation held a media briefing at the
Sampoerna School of Education to discuss teacher certification
as regulated by Law Number 20/2003. Three speakers
representing government and the NGO Education Coalition
joined Dr. Paulina Pannen of Sampoerna School of Education
and around two dozen teachers at the event.
Dr. Suparno, Head of Elementary and Special Education at the
Ministry of National Education, said that the teacher certification
program aims to increase the professionalism of teachers and,
therefore improve the quality of education. However, Lody Paat
and Bambang Wisudo of the Education Coalition argued that,
for educators, certification has no impact on teaching quality
because certified teachers only receive more welfare benefits.
Phenomenon of teachers “aiming for certificate” may lead to
teachers overlooking their key function as intellectual entity
with the leading role in nurturing high quality Indonesians.
“While teacher certification is not a sovereign cure for the many
complex issues that affect the quality of education in Indonesia,
it nevertheless opens the door to other initiatives that more
directly address the problem. We need to think not only in
terms of the process of initial teacher certification but on the
course of professional development that educators must follow
in order to maintain their certified status,” said Paulina Pannen.

Donors Underline Commitment at Bowling Event
On October 21, 2009 corporate and individual partners and
media representatives joined Putera Sampoerna Foundation
staffs for a Fun Bowling event at Senayan Sportainment Bowling,
Jakarta. The event helped to strengthen bonds between
Foundation staffs and partners. All participants showed great
enthusiasm and also raised funds by collecting money from
bowlers who failed to dislodge a single pin. All funds collected
were channeled through the Foundation to support Padang
Earthquake victims. The event was so successful that it is now
planned to hold it annually.
“I am very happy today, not only because I won the best striker, but
also because we are all united in our concern for the betterment
of Indonesia,” said Gusde Suryadi from Yayasan Sejahtera Trada.
“We are very thankful to all our partners who have been with
us throughout this year. We hope that others will follow
their example in providing greater access for all to a high
quality education in Indonesia,” said Deden Rochmawaty,
Head of Corporate Sales for the Foundation.
