Basic chemical manufacturing was Puerto Rico’s second largest export in 2018, represenƟng 6.9 percent of total exports for the island. Puerto Rico’s top 3 exports accounted for approximately 85.8 percent of the territory’s total exports in 2018. The export price indexes for the United States include Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories. Total exports for Puerto Rico amounted to $18.1 billion in 2018. That was a 13.8‐percent increase from 2017 when exports were down due to the impact of Hurricane Maria during the fourth quarter of 2016. Export prices for basic chemical manufacturing and medical equipment manufacturing declined in the last quarter of 2019. Export prices for pharmaceuƟcal and medicine manufacturing increased over the same period. The pharmaceuƟcal and medicine manufacturing export price index Ɵcked up 0.1 percent for the final quarter of 2019. Export prices for pharmaceuƟcal and medicine manufacturing rose 3.1 percent in 2019. The increase in 2019 was the largest 12‐month rise since the index advanced 3.7 percent during the period ended May 2018.

The export price index for medical equipment and supplies manufacturing declined 0.2 percent over the fourth quarter of 2019.
In 2019, prices for medical equipment and supplies manufacturing exports fell 1.0 percent.
The last me prices for export medical equipment and supplies manufacturing increased on an annual basis was 2017, when the index rose 2.1 percent.
Puerto Rico Tops States and Territories in Exports for Pharmaceu cal and Medicine Manufacturing, 2018
In 2018, the United States exported over $60.1 billion of pharmaceu cal and medicine manufacturing products.
Puerto Rico remained the top U.S. exporter of pharmaceu cal and medicine products in 2018.
Despite rising 15.2 percent in 2018, Puerto Rico’s trade dollar value of export pharmaceu cal and medicine products was s ll below the pre‐hurricane level of 2016.
The export price index for basic chemical manufacturing decreased 2.1 percent for the 3‐month period ended in December.
Export basic chemical manufacturing prices fell 4.2 percent over the 12 months ended in December.
The 2019 decline in basic chemical manufacturing export prices was driven by a 6.9‐percent decrease in prices for basic organic chemical manufacturing.
