MY PRELIMINARY TASK

Page 2: Preliminary task vs final task

There’s a colour scheme that this magazine cover follows, which makes it appealing on the eye.

Language such as ‘exclusive’ is applied to add importance to the purchase of the magazine, as the audience is then promised content they cannot find elsewhere.

Image of pupil. This can be seen through use of mise-en-scene, as he is wearing the Neale-Wade school uniform.

Words such as ‘free’ to make the audience think that they will be getting more value for their money.

Barcode and price shown in the bottom corner, conventional of a magazine.

Mid-shot used so the pupil’s uniform is in view.

Basic fonts used so they are readable.

MY FINAL TASK

The logo and name of the magazine is more fitting to the genre, as moshpits are violent collisions at a concert and the logo is distorted and bold to connotes chaos.

The artist is striking an intimidating, bold pose which is typical of this genre, as the target audience are seen to be very intimidating and bold individuals.

Left third is used so that it would stand out within a gathering of many different magazines, so the target audience could recognise it in a shop.

Bold fonts are used which match the personality of the people within the genre.

The artist is wearing the appropriate costume, as he is wearing nail varnish and wearing clothing brand labels which are popular to that target audience. His appearance also suits well, as he has long dark hair and an aggressive facial expression.

A lot more information listed on the front cover. It is conventional for a magazine to try and make a magazine looks like it has as much content in it as possible.

The work has certainly progressed since my preliminary task. I have been taught various key terms, researched into magazines and studied my target audience and found that it has significantly improved the work.

I have learned that conventions and connotations are shaped simply by purpose and audience. Once the purpose and audience are discovered, one can understand the conventions and connotations that must be applied.

In this case, the purpose was to sell magazines and the audience was those who like the rock genre. Knowing this, I could apply my knowledge of the key terms and my previous magazine research to devise a magazine suitable for its purpose and audience.
