Conventions of a magazineConventions of a magazine

Mast Head•The title of a magazine is also known as a mast head.•The title is what drags the attention of passing people.•It tends to be big, bright and bold so that it is eye catching.

Main Image•The main image will always be large so that it stands out on the news stand or wherever it is sold.•The person on the main image will be looking directly at the camera as though they are making direct eye contact with the reader.

Cover Lines•Cover lines tell readers what the main stories of the magazine are.•This are kind of like the masthead being bold and bright but doesn’t tend to be as large.

Bar Code•Standard bar code used by retailers.•These can be put any where on the front cover.

Date Line•Month and year of publication, often with the price. •Most magazines hit the stands a month before the cover date.

Main Cover Line•This tends to be very large and takes up about a quarter of the front cover.•It tends to e around the main images shoulder.

Left Third•The left third of the magazine cover is vital for sales in shops where the magazine is not shown full-frontage. The title must be easily recognisable in a display of dozens of competitors. •The start of the masthead is important here, as are short cover lines that are easy to read.

I used this original image of Ross as my main image, this is because he is making full eye contact with the camera. The lanyard around his neck shows that he is a 6th form student at the school the magazine is based on.

I have used this original image because it goes with the small cover line to the left of it, I have also faded it into the background.

Big main cover line, this stands out the most and goes with the main image. To do this I have put all the letters as capitals and use stroke to make it bold and stand out better.

I have used bavol and boss, drop shadow and stroke to make the Mast head stand out.

Small cover lines to show the reader what else is in the magazine to read about. These cover lines do not stand out as much as the main.

Using Photo shop and Photo analysis

Page 6: Preliminary Task

The two original images show two salt students playing cricket, I have chosen to se these image because they go with the page heading above.

The page number and info have been placed in columns with the page number been a different colour to the info. This makes it more clear for the reader.

The schools personal motto has been placed at the bottom. This shows the reader what the school is about. I have used stroke here but changed the colour effect for two reasons, it goes better with the colour of the writing and would not be visible if black due to the black background.

Using Photo shop and Photo analysis

I have used the clipping mask tool to place the school logo behind the writing.
