Living like pigs (and we areto blame)

Last week Saturday a groupof young people were spottedin Burgersfort, picking uprubbish under the leadershipof Mr Philip Smit of the JesusFactor Youth, who alsosupplied the photographspublished on this page.

Mr Smit told PlatinumGazette “we cleaned the areabehind the Dutch ReformedChurch Burgersfort and werealized how dirty our town is.Behind the church it looks likea rubbish dump. Burgersfortitself on the whole looks like arubbish heap and no onecares. These photo’s weretaken at different places intown from Aloe Ridge West toright accross town past thenew taxi rank. We were giveninstruction in the Bible(Gen1:28) to look after thisearth, are we?”

Burgersfort do have arefuse removal service in thetown and there is a fullyfunctional landfill site, whichis clearly signposted from themain road. During MandelaDay this year a lot of peoplededicated their 67 minutes tocleaning the town.

It seems that although asmall number of people arenot content with the situation, the uncontrolled dumpingcontinues unabated.Everybody just do as theywish, without any regard tohygene, other people, fellowresidents or the law, just likewhen they drive in town. Thequestions remain: Why do wewe need law enforcement justto consider what is properand civilised? Do we actuallylike to live like pigs and actlike barbarians on the roads?

COSATU Limpopo continued with its mobilisation on mining issues drive during thepast week. Last week Friday saw a social dialogue at Nthame Primary School nearBurgersfort where local communities in the area which are affected by miningactivities, dispossessions, violation of their human rights and social labour plan, had anopportunity for their voices to be heard. The event was attended by several importantroleplayers and icluded the COSATU provincial leadership.

Atlatsa Resources CEO Harold Motaung said on Tuesday that thenew operational management team had made significant progressat its Bokoni mine since its appointment in February.

Reporting on the group’s second-quarter and interimperformance, he said that the management team led by DawidStander had created the necessary mining flexibility throughenhanced development efforts and improved employee relations.

Motaung stressed that operational performance and costcontrols remained critical to the Bokoni mine, especially during aperiod of prolonged depressed platinum group metals (PGM) prices.

The mine increased its PGM production by 20% year-on-year to34 098 oz in the second quarter and by 23% from the 27 799 oz inthe first quarter of 2012, while it lowered its unit costs by 17%quarter-on-quarter to R10 285/PGM oz. Cash operating costs fell to$43.5-million, from $46.3-million in the second quarter of 2011.

Revenue from the sale of concentrate for the second quarter was$38.7-million, compared with $35.9-million for the comparativeperiod last year. This increase in revenue was primarily attributableto increased production volumes, but negatively affected by aweakening of the average dollar-basket price by 17% to $1 186/ozwhen compared to a basket price of $1 430/oz achieved in 2011.

Meanwhile, Atlatsa said that it would publish a revised timetablefor the implementation of a restructuring plan for Bokoni, once theoperational review was completed. It initially planned to implementthe restructure plan by July.

Atlatsa and Anglo American Platinum are currently reviewing theBokoni operational plan to determine the most optimal strategicapproach for the operations and its ramp-up.

Ms Nevia Phasha said: “I think there still is aplace for Women’s Day and Month. Icelebrate it in the way it is supposed to. I aminvolved with empowering women in thecommunity. I thnk people in general knowwhat it is about and celebrate it correctly”.

Me. Ann Strydom sê: “Ja, daar moet noggoed soos Vrouedag en Maand wees. Onsvroue is belangrik. Hulle wil dit net nie besefnie. Mense vier dit nie soos hulle moet nie”.

Mnr. Denyssen van Rooyen sê: “Dit wordseker nie gevier soos dit moet nie. Dit isdeesdae meer ‘n persoonlike ding soosValentynsdag. Dis mos lekker om vakansiete hou”.

Ms Lucia Mangwale said: “It is important. Wemust celebrate the month for women. It is notjust a holiday”.

Mr Andrew Masenya and Mr Johan Lekhuleni said: “We think women deserve it. It is no longerfashionable to celebrate Women’s Day and Month as it was intended. Maybe we men must dosome activities as well during this month - cook, clean and do the domestic things”.

Mr Zolani Masondo said: “It is important. It isno longer the old days when women wereoppressed and we must celebrate it. Not allpeople celebrate it correctly”.

Mr Justice Malepe said: “Yes, there is a needto celebrate Women’s Day and Month. Menmust respect women. That is the way.Celebrating is important. In general peopledon’t respect women enough”.

Mr Johannes Moagi said: “As long as womenfrom all walks of life, irrespective of theirpolitics come together it is good. It isimportant to celebrate it”.

Mr Simon Masinga said: “I think it isnecessary because we think about the pastand it will help us to correct everything in thefuture. The celebrations has however missedtheir direction. People don’t respect time andthey don’t do the relevant activities onWomen’s Day”.

Ms Kabelo Magabane and Ms Sophy Maepa said: “Ja, we enjoy this month. Men are nowrespecting and spoiling us. These days it is just a holiday when people celebrate Women’sDay”.

Mnr.

Last week on 9 August we celebrated Women’sDay and this whole month is in many waysdedicated to honour special women and bringempowerment to women. Althought the rest ofthe world celebrate Women’s Day in March, inSouth Africa it falls on 9 August incommemoration of 20 000 women who walkedto the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 to handover a petition against the carrying of passesby women.According to South African History Online, thismarch, the Women’s Charter and the anti-passcampaign became “benchmarks in the struggleand continued to inspire decades of women untildemocracy was finally realized in 1994”. Todayeveryone has equal rights. We asked readers if they feel there is still aplace for celebrating Women’s Day and Monthand whether they feel it is celebrated in theproper way?

Is there still a place for something

Mr Papie Makgate and Mr Ludwig Waterson said: “We should celebrate Women’s Day notonly in this month, but right through the year”. Ludwig: “I give my mom coffee every morningand massage her feet when she wants to”.

Mr Thabo Mosoma said: “Ja, it is veryimportant. Women must be empowered and Ithink we celebrate it in the right way”.

Mnr. Hennie Stoop sê: “Dis allesgeldmaakstories. As ‘n mens se lewe reg is,is dit elke dag Valentynsdag, Vrouedag,Vadersdag ens. Vroue doen dikwels goed virdie verkeerde rede. Hulle voel hulle moethulself bewys maar ons mans het nie gesêhulle moet dit doen nie. Ons kyk nie neer ophulle nie”.

Ms Florence Modingwane said: “Yes, we arecelebrating Women’s Month. I even have alittle badge to show as well. I think we arecelebrating it in the right way”.

Mr Simon Molobela and Mr Gadson Komane said: “It is not celebrated the way it is expected.Today they are just having a holiday on Women’s Day. Schools should help with awarenessabout Women’s Day and Month. What is important is employment equity - it should beimplemented. Perhaps they should during this month give all posts to women. Women mustalso come together without politics. Enable all women to come together and share ideas”.

Mnr. Rudi van der Merwe sê: “Elke vrou hetnodig om bederf te word, maar ek dink hulleruk dit uit verband uit. Vrouedag en VroueMaand word nie regtig gevier soos dit bedoelis nie”.

Ms Tebogo Makofane said: “We still celebrate it. People celebrate itas it is intended”. With her are Mpho and Basetsana.
