Announcing results for the year ended 31 December 2013, Merafe saidthis week that the companys attributable ferrochrome production from theGlencore-Merafe Chrome Venture (the Venture) was 32% higher year onyear.

This increase was as a result of higher demand, resulting in operatingutilisation of 87% of the Ventures smelting capacity. Ferrochrome salesvolumes for 2013 increased by 23% year on year. Regarding relations withits employees, the campany stated that wage negotiations relating to allthe smelters and mines were concluded and implemented during 2013.

Currently, the Venture is not significantly impacted by the strikes in theplatinum industry and at this stage, has adequate chrome ore supply.

The Ventures total recordable injury frequency rate (TRIFR) improvedfrom 4.05 in 2012 to 3.84 in 2013. The Lion II Project contributed to thisimprovement with more than 7 million man hours worked, without any losttime injury.

With regards to Lion 2 smelter the company announced that hotcommissioning commenced in the last quarter of 2013 and will continueduring the first half of 2014. First production has been slightly delayedmainly due to limited availability of contractors over the December holidayperiod as well as heavy rainfall and windy conditions in the last quarter of2013.

The overall project however remains within schedule and on budgetand it is envisaged that the smelter will be fully operational toward themiddle of 2014.

On Tuesday Sekhukhune District Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr David Mogobo Magabe, together with his Members of the Mayoral Committee handed over two (2) water projects tothe community of Maila Segolo and Maila Mapitsana respectively at Makhuduthamaga LocalMunicipality.

The project has been ongoing for a couple of years. The project will supply water untilthe year 2025 if taken care of, to Maila Mapitsana, Manganeng, Ramphelane, Madirane,

Tjatane, Marulaneng and Maila Segolo and many others within Makhuduthamaga. The project was done by Pula Systems.Kgoshi Maila and his community thanked the executive mayor for his leadership and

hard work in making sure the community has access to clean fresh water. Mayor Magabethanked the community of Maila Mapitsana for their patience and requested them to takecare of the project as it belongs to them now.

Meanwhile, back at the(Burgersfort) ranch ...Burgersfort towns water problems do not seem to be solved. Since December lastyear consumers are struggling with water pressure, intermittent water cuts, sometimes during the day and almost every night.

Platinum Gazette has tried to inform readers what the problems are by solicitingreaction from Lepelle Northern, who claim that they also communicate to consumers(incidently we could not find one consumer who received any communication fromLepelle Northern since December). After updating the community through thenewspaper on the water situation in early January (we are thankful for that), it seemsnothing has changed. Water supply still come and go and sometimes the pressure isso low the water can as well be cut off.

So we sent an e-mail to Lepelle Northern again two weeks ago, requesting afurther update. No reaction. Another em-mail after that one. No reaction. So wetried to phone. No answer, cellphones voicemail service kicks in. We leave amessage. No reaction. We send a SMS to the regional manager andcommunications manager. No reaction.

    Sorry, we tried.

Three dead insix car pile-upAn accident near Jorges Resort between Burgersfort andSteelpoort left three people dead on Saturday 1 February 2014.According to Special Commander Madilonga of the BurgersfortSAPS, it is not clear what caused the first vehicle to lose control. This car caught fire as a second vehicle crashed into it that alsoburst into flames. It seems that six cars were driving from Steelpoort towardsBurgersort and we suspect speeding my have contributed to theaccident, he told the newspaper. If they had been travellingthe speed enforced on that road with the correct followingdistances the vehicles would have had enough time to stop, butin the end six vehicles collided into each other. Two peopledied on the scene of the accident and a third was taken toDilokong hospital were he passed away on arrival. Occupants ofthe other vehicles involved in the accident sustained minorinjuries and were not taken to hospital by ambulance.Madilonga said: We urge people to start taking road safetyserious. The SAPS will be acting against those makingthemselves guilty of speeding and driving under the influence ofalcohol. Also pedestrians who are found to be over the legalalcohol limit on the road will have to face the law.

Things fall apartThe Greater Tubatse Municipality maycurrently occupy a state of the art building, but many things fall apart around it.The Acting Municipal Manager, Ms MAMonyeapao did not attend the SpecialCouncil Meeting to adopt the 2012/2013Annual Report and the 2013/2014 Mid-yearreport. Unhappy taxi drivers allegedly heldher hostage in her office. By the time ofgoing to press the newspaper could notconfirm this or why. According to oppositionparties within GTM, this was a ploy to avoidfacing questions regarding allegedmisconduct, corruption and other allegationsthat has plagued the municipality over thepast few months. One of the i ssues they areconcerned about is the continuation of herappointment as acting municipal manager. In the mean time the state of the townsroads is becoming a huge concern and roadtraffic signs are either absent, vandalised orsimply ignored by road users. (See photo-graphs left and on the right). Traffic officersseem to be unable to bring the motorists inBurgersfort to book and get them to driveresponsibly and safe. A municipal poundthat was due to be constructed to assist withcontrolling stray animals (that also causetraffic disruptions) is of no help as cattlecontinue to roam the towns streets.

All photographs on this page was taken during the past week inBurgersfort.

Mr Kenneth Magama, Mr Thomas Chafadza and Mr Mbunge Gandu said: You never know when it will go up again. So it makes it difficult to plan and budget. It is not fair. Everything goes up, especially food. Government shouldsubsidise petrol for the benefit of the poor.

Mr Tebogo Makofane said: Governmenthas been complaining about strikes, butdont they think the petrol hikes make itdifficult for people to cope? They must takethat into account. I drive every day fromBurgersfort to Steelpoort for work and thefuel price increase is affecting me a lot.

Mr Gadson Komane said: Salaries are notincreased as much as the petrol price. Wedont even know the Consumer Price Index -this is a disaster. We are not going to cope.Especially those earning a little will struggle.Public transport and food prices will go up.There is nothing we can do. How are wegoing to survive now? We are reallydisappointed with our government. Theymust do something to stop this.

Ms Thari Mashaba and Ms Virginia Masemola said: We wont be able to come to work. Somepeople dont have permanent posts and the money we earn is not enough to covereverything. It is difficult.

Mnr. Koen van Zyl s: Hulle moet nou maarvir ons donkies gee om op te ry. Al probleem:hulle ry die donkies langs die pad dood!.

Mr Justice Mphahlele said: It is a question ofgovernment increasing the salaries of allsectors so that when the petrol goes up itmust not become an inconvenience to allpeople. With wage negotiations the issue of

fuel increases must be taken intoconsideration because it affects everyoneacross the board. It is making life verydifficult.

Mr Tim Matsi said: I dont think government isdoing the fuel increases intentionally. I thinkthey are doing it to cope with internationalpressure. But hey, it is bad! We just have tocope!

Mr Xolani Masekosaid: Governmentmust do somethingabout it. Peopleshould form lift clubsto work to savemoney. This way youcan save a lot. Withhim is Xome.

The latest fuel price increase of 39c forpetrol and 24c for diesel has pushed theprice to a record high and the AutomobileAssociation (AA) warns that it is not the end.In a statement released this week the AAsaid that the petrol price could reach R16 alitre in the medium term.Economist Mike Schussler this weekexplained that various things have an impacton the fuel price. OIl cost $113 a barrel oneyear ago and on Sunday this week its $106so the petrol price is going down in othercountries, but the rand has weakened somuch that it is going up for us.The rand has reached a five year lowagainst the dollar last week when it traded atR11.38 for a dollar and at R15.50 an euro. The reality is that many consumers aresimply putting in less fuel into their vehicles.Schussler said that statistics are showingthat people now put 5% less fuel into theirvehicles per service station stop comparedto a year ago.An estimated 30c increase is expected atthe end of February because of the weakrand. The chain effect of fuel priceincreases can be felt through all industries.Mr Richard Downing of the SA Chamber ofCommerce and Industry has said that manySouth Africans are already living beyondtheir means. Food prices are set to rise, thisafter electricity prices went up 8% last yearand utility bills increased by 3.5% betweenNovember and December.According to economist George Glynos, consumers may get a break in 2015, butmost forecasters are careful not to make atoo rosy prediction.Platinum Gazette asked readers how theycope with the latest increase in the fuel priceand what they think about it.

Mr Jerry Ndlovu and his family - Ronia, Octavia and Evelina said: We are driving less. We just do better planning. It isnot fair that the price keeps going up. Government must do something.

Mr Asad Ali and MrSafraz Mohammedsaid: The diesel priceis too much now! InBurgersfort there istoo many people andno business sopeople suffer becauseof the fuel price. It isunfair that everythingis going up.

Mr Solomon Matebula, Mr Innocent Dlamini and Mr Michael Ngwenyma said: It is difficult. We are working but the problem is that we get small salaries. Things go up but the moneygoes down. Life is difficult. We dont think government can do something about it, it is just theway they operate. They only think about themselves.

Mr Solly Ramogayana said: This will bringour people to their graves. It is because ofthe petrol price that people go into debt withcash loans. People are working, but cannotsupport their families. Salaries dontincrease. Now we must sit down and discussthis with the politicians. We are on our way toelections and if the governor is not doing thewill of the people, perhaps it is time foranother organisation. This government onlyconsider themselves, their friends andfamily.

Mnr. Johan Vogel s: Hulle is besig om dieland in die grond in te druk. n Jaar terug hetn barrel olie meer gekos as nou, maarsteeds bly die petrol prys opgaan!.

Ms Edna Guchu said: Ill try to drive lessnow that the price is up again. It is not fairthat it goes up so much. It is timegovernment does something about it. Withher is Diane.

Mr Manny Antunes said: We are being taxedso much, the burden is just becoming toomuch. Everything goes up while we have topay personal tax, VAT, e-tolls and where isthe money going? It worries me that thequality of life people are able to afford isgoing down so much.

Mr Maurice Masehla said: It is affecting ourlives very negatively. Our lives become verydifficult when the petrol and diesel priceskeep going up. It is not a nice situation. You

just have to stick to a budget and avoidunnecessary expenses.

    do you cope with it?
