How did it start?
• Ionia:– 520 B.C.E.-Persians conquered the area.– Ionian Greeks revolted and Athens aided them– Darius (Persian King) defeated the rebels and
vowed to destroy Athens.
Battle of Marathon
• 490 B.C.E.-Persian fleet brought 25,000 men to Marathon.
• 10,000 Athenians awaited• Athenians charged the Persians and won.
