Dear Friends, Welcome to our Seventeenth Annual Bull sale. Thank you to those people who continue to support and believe in our breeding program. The Pathfinder breeding program comprises a herd of 1500 stud and commercial Angus females, with over 1200 females inseminated to the industry’s top sires and approximately 200 embryos implanted from our elite cows. We have a number of new sires represented. Calving ease sires Pathfinder Goldmark, Predestined C511 and Berkley have proven that you can have calving ease with plenty of growth and carcase. We shouldn’t have to put up with low growth, to sleep at night during calving! For moderate birth and maximum curve-bending growth, super sires Equator A241, TC Total, Daiquiri, the record selling Emperor and Right Time C574 have been included. Breedplan has revolutionized our ability to make genetic progress, along with AI and ET, however the challenge is to find an optimal level of production traits that suits both our environment and premium market specifications. Our breeding philosophy is simple; we want the heaviest, thickest, docile calves possible from an unassisted birth, and have carcass traits that provide feed-lotters with a high return. Most importantly, we want consumers to have a pleasurable eating experience; marbling is critical to achieve this. We have a policy of continually using the top proven sires that already have progeny performing under commercial conditions. This greatly increases the reliability and consistency of our bulls. These genetics are then transmitted to our client’s herds resulting in an even drop of calves with higher percentage hitting the premium specifications. Congratulations to the Sinclair, O’Brien, Bateman, and Munro families for heading up the Landmark & J.P. Darcey Casterton weaner sales. The Sinclair calves once again topped the sale with $1.91/kg with a return of $707/head.If you need assistance in relating EBV’s and sire selection to your production system, please don’t hesitate to call. Our cattle are run at above district stocking rates, with hay being fed sparingly. The bulls are normally grass fed, giving a good indication of their ‘doing ability’. Being a locally based owner/operator we pride ourselves on providing service and back-up immediately should the need arise. Our program of having mainly grass-fed service tested bulls from proven genetics has eliminated most of the common problems. We will be participating in the Victorian Beef Field Days on Wednesday, 5th February and the South Australia Beef Field Days on Monday, 10th February and invite you to inspect the bulls on this day, or on Sale Day, from 9.30am. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided at the sale. We look forward to seeing you there. Nick, Sara, Harry, Tom, & Elle.
“Family and family values are priceless. Relationships are how we relate to each other are also priceless.
We must sieze the moment and make the most of every single day.”

Bull SouNDNESS - rEProDuCTioN
Scrotal size and tone
Scrotal size (SS) is important for two reasons:
• It must satisfy the current mating load of the bull.
• It affects the fertility of the bull’s daughters.
Are the testicles big enough for the current mating load?
A minimum scrotal circumference of 32–34 cm is required, but aim for 35 cm and above. This applies for most Bos taurus breeds, at a working age of 18–24 months, and with average mating loads of 30–40 cows over a period of 3 months. With more cows, or a shorter mating period, higher scrotal circumference becomes very important.
is bigger better?
If you are breeding replacement heifers—yes (see below).
If you do not keep heifers and do not use high mating loads, there appears to be little benefit in going much over the minimum. It seems wise, however, to have a little in reserve, so a couple of extra centimetres is a good safeguard. There is some evidence that bulls with larger SS get higher pregnancy rates early in the joining.
How about yearlings?
Most British breeds reach puberty when SS is around 30 cm, but again it seems wise to use bulls which have the minimum of 32 cm.
Size varies with condition. SS increases 1–2 cm when bulls are in good condition compared to when in store condition.
Testicle tone
Size isn’t, of course, the only criterion. The testes need to be ‘firm and springy’ and free of lumps. Soft testes may indicate degenerating semen-producing tissue. It is also wise to check the head and tail of the epididymis for any swelling or hardening.
Big testicles are a benefit if you keep your heifers
Scrotal size is of greater importance here, because bulls with large SS sire daughters with better fertility.
The female fertility link is thought to be some mix of earlier puberty and earlier conception.
Look for bulls with large SS. If BREEDPLAN fertility Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) are available, they offer the best way of maximising this beneficial link with female fertility.
Scrotal size is an indicator of puberty (British breeds reach puberty at around 30 cm SS). It has been well documented that bulls showing early puberty will have sisters also showing early puberty.
A more far-reaching question, however, is whether a single SS measurement will predict this early puberty and also continue with a positive link with later female fertility (beyond puberty, to subsequent rejoinings)?
There is a positive correlation. Two important Australian research findings in this area are discussed below, and there is supporting overseas work.
• An analysis was done on five BREEDPLAN herds in Victoria, NSW and Queensland, with 10 000 calving records and 3000 scrotal measurements. This showed a favourable genetic link between SS and the female fertility trait ‘days to calving’ (DC).
5
‘Days to calving’ is the time elapsing between the introduction of a bull to a group of females and the dates at which they calve. This is identifying some mix of early puberty (for maiden heifers), early conception and return to oestrus, and gestation length.
Bulls with larger SS had female relatives with fewer days to calving (the genetic correlation was –0.3).
• In a large CSIRO research herd in Queensland, 20 years of calving records were analysed and cows drafted into high-fertility and low-fertility lines. The high line not only continued its higher fertility, but also produced sons that had bigger testicles than did the sons in the low line—the reverse proof!
We believe scrotal size is one of the main drivers of fertility and therefore profitability in a beef herd.

gaP iN SuPPly CoMiNgDenver based economist and director of the Livestock Marketing Information Centre, Jim Robb, spoke at the University of Nebraska warning that a big reduction in beef supply is just around the corner.“Beef production has not yet come down in a big way because cow kill has been enormous,” stated Robb. “A huge decline in cow beef production is coming, though. Total beef production is going to come down hard.”Drought of course is the blame for the prolonged liquidation of America’s cow herd. This year conditions have returned to, or near normal. Robb expects this year’s flow of cows to slaughter to slow way down and the seasonal dip in prices should be less pronounced. “Autumn slaughter cow prices won’t be pushed as low, and a rally in the spring could be strong.”With many areas receiving a measure of relief from drought and high feed prices, and the promise of high calf prices, Robb said he thinks there will be sufficient incentive to start rebuilding breeding herds. “But you know the biology,” said Robb. “We don’t have a chance of turning things around and building up beef production until 2017.”Added to this, the Mexican national herd has been decimated by drought, making this year’s imports of south-of-the-border cattle to the United States down by a million head. This reduction in world supply means that there is a likely chance that beef prices will rise in the near future, providing opportunities for farmers in Australia with calves on-hand to make reasonable profits. The Australian OutlookThe American herd is at a 60 year low after being decimated by drought, with herd replacement slow. Experiencing similar circumstances, the Australian herd has been reduced to approximately 28 million with the drought in Queensland and New South Wales, negating the gains of 2010 and 2011. Predicted general rains in these areas will significantly impact on supply and prices. Australian beef exports for 2013 set a new annual record of 1.1 million tonnes shipped, up 14% from 2012. With the dollar back in the high 80’s, from the high 90’s in 2013, exporters will be more competitive in 2014 which is positive news for prices. Australia now accounts for 48% of the Chinese market, which has rapidly become the third largest export destination, behind Japan and the United States. Free trade agreements on beef exports, have been reached between both USA and South Korea, which will gradually open the doors for greater volumes. The Middle East is rapidly becoming an important market, mainly Saudi Arabia, which nearly doubled its imports in 2013. Indonesia has taken 45% more beef in 2013 and from January 1st, the quota system for beef and live exports has been replaced with a price reference system. With the live trade heading for 700 000 this year and producers currently getting $2.35/kg, the excess supply from the North will not come down South.Vietnam has also started taking live cattle with over 50 000 exported in 2013, similar to China and Malaysia. Russia imported 33 000 Angus heifers in 2013, with more orders now starting to come through. The analysts are positive for the 2014 cattle industry and we are looking forward to the better returns ahead.

Early WEaNiNg MaNagEMENT STraTEgy For DrougHT
CoNDiTioNSRecently, animal scientists Richard Waterman, a rangeland nutritionist, and Thomas Geary, a reproductive physiologist, evaluated early weaning of beef calves and its impact on cow, heifer and steer performance. “When a calf is weaned early, all nutrients that normally go to milk production for the calf can be retained by the mother- helping to increase or sustain her body weight and condition,” Waterman says. “Proper handling of early-weaned calves can result in greater weight gain than if they had remained with their mothers, especially during the drought.”
Tallying the BenefitsScientists confirmed that weaning a calf earlier than normal potentially offers a beneficial production alternative for beef producers when feed is limited. “With the calf removed, the cow needs less feed to address her needs, which is especially important during drought.”Research was conducted using calves that were weaned early, at 80 days of age, while others were weaned at the more traditional age of 215 days. Cows that weaned a calf early weighed more and were in better body condition at the start of winter. Consequently, the amount of harvested feedstuffs required for cows to maintain satisfactory body weights and condition throughout winter was reduced.“The research confirmed that early weaning is profitable. If you wean calves early, you have fewer problems and can better control the production environment.” “Early weaning during severe droughts will reduce economic losses that would occur when selling lightweight calves,” Waterman says. “In order to achieve an economic benefit, a 20% increase in reproductive performance in the cow herd would need to be realized, because early-weaned calves must go on feed much sooner.”Outcomes of the research also demonstrated that early weaning increases the probability of heifers becoming pregnant on time in the following breeding season, Waterman says.
10
“The nice response was in body weight, especially with those 2-year-olds nursing for the first time,” he says. “It takes a cow five years to reach her mature body weight. When young cows have their calves removed early, the demands of lactation cease – allowing the cow to focus her resources on body condition and growth. If a cow goes into winter in better condition, and calves with better condition the next year, she will be much more likely to remain in the herd until maturity.”The objective is to preserve body condition of the cow at a time when feed is limited, says John Paterson, a former MSU animal science professor and beef science specialist. “We don’t want cows to get thin or pull body condition down because they are lactating, which requires a lot of feed. The way you save that feed is to stop lactation by getting the calf weaned earlier.”
Steering in the Right DirectionAdditional findings showed that early-weaned steers reached maturity sooner than traditionally weaned steers when weight-gain, feedlot performance and carcass traits were measured. Steers had a higher rate of growth between the time of early weaning and the time of normal weaning. Early-weaned steers typically had poorer yield grades, revealing the importance of identifying them before they enter the feedlot. While producers who market cattle using a quality grid will benefit from having a higher-quality carcass going into market, research indicates that management of early-weaned calves can directly affect how they are graded at slaughter. “Carcases of early-weaned steers may be too fat and receive less-desirable yield grades compared to those of traditionally weaned calves of similar genetics and age when slaughtered together,” Waterman says. “If early-weaned steers are identified before entering the feedlot and slaughtered at an earlier age, producers have the opportunity to market them at more desirable yield grades with increased quality premiums for those carcases.”Scientists from the University of Illinois confirmed this strategy by using ultrasound to measure carcass characteristics. Early-weaned steers were then harvested at a younger age than traditionally weaned animals to maximise their carcass value.

DEvEloPMENTal DuPliCaTioN (DD)
What is Developmental Duplication (DD)?
DD is an abnormality that has been long-observed in Angus cattle, but was previously thought to be caused by conjoined twins or other anomalies during fetal development. This abnormality was recently found to be a simply inherited recessive genetic condition passed through certain lines of Angus cattle. Animals affected with this condition can sometimes be born with an extra limb or part of an extra limb (a condition referred to as polymelia).
What does simply inherited mean?
Simply inherited means that one pair of genes determines an animal's phenotype for a trait of interest.
What does recessive mean?
In general, an animal must inherit the recessive form of a genefrom both parents for a recessive phenotype to be expressed. We would call this type of animal homozygous recessive. The only way to have an affected calf is to breed carrier or affected parents.
Do i need to test all of my animals?
No. The majority of registered Angus animals are not potential carriers for DD or other currently recognized genetic conditions.
Only those who are potential carriers should be considered for testing.
What do the test results mean?
Possibilities for DD test results are DDF (the animal carries 0 copies of the recessive gene), DDC (the animal carries 1 copy of the recessive gene), or DDA (the animal carries 2 copies of the recessive gene). If the animal is DDF you can breed it with no fear of ever having an affected calf. If the animal is DDC or DDA, you’ll need to adopt a management strategy to avoid affected offspring and to deal with potential carriers entering your breeding herd.
What does a DD carrier (DDC) look like?
A DD carrier looks normal; there is nothing in the way an animal looks (its phenotype) that indicates that the animal is a carrier of the DD mutation.
My animal tested DDA, but doesn’t have any extra limbs. Is the test wrong?
Unlike some of the other simple recessive traits, not all animals who are homozygous recessive (DDA) will express the condition.
This is a concept known as incomplete penetrance. Research is ongoing to discover why that may be the case. However, simple inheritance rules still apply. Animals who are DDA will pass on the recessive allele to every one of their offspring, regardless of the animals to which they are bred.
We have never seen DD expressed in our herd even though we do have 6 animals carrying the double gene. The most prevalent bloodlines used in our herd with this gene were Temania Africa, his sons, Daquiri and Diplomat, Sitz458N, Dinky Di and Ardrossan A2. We have several very good bulls that are DD carriers in the sale which have been identified and we recommend not joining these bulls with daughters of the above bloodlines.

‘Wando Hills’ Nareen Malcolm & Trish Munro
We run a small cattle operation at Nareen, Victoria, with 400 breeding cows. In 2003 we started moved to an Angus herd as there was a better premium, and the animals had better fertility and fewer health issues.
In 2006, we purchased some Noss Pathfinder blood Angus. They grew out to be very good cows so to compliment them, we brought in two Pathfinder bulls and have been on Pathfinder genetics ever since.
The excellence of Pathfinder genetics is highlighted at the Casterton weaner sales with the high number of pens with Pathfinder progeny that are highly sought after and create excellent returns for their owners.
The Pathfinder bulls have really put muscle, size, and fertility into our cows and calves. The Moyles work closely with their clients, providing an excellent sales and follow up service. Nick is always on for a great chat, providing relevant and timely advice relating to the cattle industry (and fishing).
All the best for the 2014 Sale.

Accelerating genetic progress through BREEDPLAN could earn the Australian beef industry an additional $50 million dollars* annually, according to Meat & Livestock Australia’s Manager, Southern Australia, Research and Development, Dr Rob Banks.
“Beef cattle producers are capturing increasing returns from industry investment in genetic improvement, and the gains are growing at a faster and faster rate,” Rob said.
Between 1980 and 2008, the average genetic merit of BREEDPLAN bulls entering industry rose by about $27(in today’s prices), in terms of impact on income and cost per cow joined (Figure 1).
That rate of genetic progress has doubled between 1998 and 2008, but Rob said it is still “a long way below what is possible”.
NaTurE & BrEEDPlaN Will Do all THE HarD WorK For you
“For genetic improvement to be really transforming commercial returns – which it can – we need to lift the average rate of progress from about $1.95 per cow joined per year, to up over $7.50 per cow joined per year,” he said.
“That sounds a lot, but it is quite feasible. There are now herds consistently making progress at over $5 per cow joined per year – those herds are literally driving genetic profit into their clients’ businesses.” Rob added that the Beef Information Nucleus programs coupled with greater use by stud breeders of elite young sires was expected to drive the genetic engine faster, to deliver better and better dividends for producers’ R&D dollars.
“The fruits of genetics and genomics R&D are delivered to industry primarily through BREEDPLAN, and one of the useful features of BREEDPLAN is that it tracks genetic improvement over time,” Rob said.
“In breaking down the national average genetic merit, the average southern BREEDPLAN bull today delivers $42 more per cow mated than back in 1980.”
To keep increasing the rate of progress, Rob said that buying better genetics was the easiest and most reliable way for commercial producers to improve their bottom line.
“You should look to buy bulls from breeders who have a strong track record of using BREEDPLAN and ideally, from herds that are making the most progress. They are the ones that will have more bulls with higher $Index values within their respective breeds.”
“Buy the best bulls you can afford that have the highest EBVs and $Index figures for your production system and target market – and nature and BREEDPLAN will do all the hard work for you,” Rob said.
“Pathfinder Angus are an outstanding example of a stud delivering genetic improvement to drive their clients’ profits – they make sound use of BREEDPLAN, with a strong commitment to recording quality data and making sensible use of BREEDPLAN information. This is reflected in the fact that Pathfinder Angus is well above average for all the key EBVs and $Indexes for the Angus breed”, Rob Banks, MLA.

MaNagiNg your NEW BullSThere are many important things to consider in the management of newly purchased bulls. These include strategies from the moment the bulls come off the truck right through to joining and beyond. arrival It is important to have other cattle in the yards (preferably cows) when the bulls are unloaded to reduce isolation stress. A feed of hay and access to water soon after arrival will also help a bull’s rumen function and correct any dehydration, especially after a long trip. Bulls can be quite agitated after a long journey and the steps above will help settle them in to their new environment. Examine the bulls closely for any lameness which may have occurred during transport. It is important to act quickly if there is a problem detected. arrival to Joining It is vital to manage the bulls correctly in this transition phase to get the optimum performance from them in joining. This is extremely important when there is a large amount of time between arrival and joining. Bulls are often put in large paddocks on their own to prevent fighting, but this can lead to them getting an excessive amount of feed and getting over-fat. The solution is to increase the stocking rates where the bulls are to be run and one of the best ways to achieve this is to graze the paddocks out with sheep. On the other side of the equation sale bulls purchased in Autumn may require some supplementary feeding to maintain their body condition. Try to maintain the bulls in body condition score 3 and if they are grazing for many months before joining don’t forget about worm burdens and liver fluke in some areas, and clostridial and vibriosis vaccinations prior to joining. Joining It is always extremely important to monitor bulls being used for their first season because these bulls have the higher incidence of breakdown. A high level of inspection should occur in the first 3 weeks of joining because in an ideal herd 70% of conceptions should occur in the first cycle and this is when most injuries will occur. It is best to observe the bull serving females; otherwise producers should check regularly for signs of potential problems including: • swelling in the prepuce or testicular region • lameness or swollen joints • continuous mounting without serving • a large percentage of cows in oestrus in the second half of the joining period
(cows are in oestrus for 8-14 hours every 21 days so each day approximately 5% of empty cows will be in oestrus)
• bulls always on their own (possibly sick or injured and not interested in serving).
• If any of the above problems are detected the bull should be removed from the females and replaced as soon as possible to minimize conception loss in the joining period. After the first 3 weeks of regular and close inspection, bulls should be observed once weekly, as should older bulls.
Penile infections A common disorder in young bulls introduced to a new herd in their first season is penile infections (blanoposthitis). A range of bacterial, viral and other organisms cause these infections with the most common being the genital form of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus. These penile infections are transient; however they will stop the bull serving due to pain. If bulls with active infection are detected (red and inflamed penis) they should be isolated and treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication. Bulls usually recover after 3-4 weeks but if undetected this type of disorder can cause a huge decrease in conception rate and possible permanent infertility in the bull in a small percentage of cases. These bulls may continually mount cows without serving. A sound healthy bull should serve on every 1 or 2 mounts.Achieving satisfactory pregnancy rates is essential in running a profitable beef enterprise. For this reason the joining period is one of the most critical periods of the year. The bulls and cows need to be observed regularly in this period to identify any problems and address them as soon as possible. It is also advisable to pregnancy test 6 to 8 weeks following joining to ensure satisfactory pregnancy rates have been reached.
