By Russell Bush Sportswriter HUNTINGDON (March 9) County champs, hard work and attitude were the words spo- ken most often as Huntingdon Middle School held its Athletic Banquet at the middle school to honor their cheerleaders, softball, basketball and football teams. Event emcee Mark Rich be- gan by saying the athletic pro- grams are on the same page in the way they think and conduct themselves. D.J. Dean welcomed everyone on behalf of the AB Club prior to invocation by Keeton Bailey. The first awards of the night were presented to the Middle School cheerleaders by their coaches, Heather Kee and Amy Gillespie. Leadership awards were given to captains Haidyn McLemore and Anna Kate Ar- nold. McLemore also received the Most Spirited Award. The MVP Award was given to Katie Bennett. Katy McGee received the Most Improved Award. Kay- lee Taylor received the Best Attitude Award. Tori Townsend received the Best Effort Award. Coach Kee commented on the girls hard work that began with a four-day camp in the early fall. She added that she was excited about some of the girls trying out for High School. Coaches Amy Fuller and Rob- in Belew presented the softball awards. Coach Fuller spoke of the great season they had and commented on each girl’s assets on the playing field. The coach- es chose not to give individual awards but gave the MVP to all the girls that participated. Boys Basketball Coach Jona- than Kee congratulated the boys on being county champs and playing in the state tournament. The Mustangs finished the regular season 10-0 and won both games they played in the county tournament. The Mus- tangs lost a close game in the state tournament. Kee felt he got more out of the season than the boys after returning to coaching after a three-year absence. He said his proudest moment game off the court as the players spent a cold Saturday morning raking leaves and cleaning the yard of a per- son in the community. Receiving individual awards for the Mustang basketball team were: Keeton Bailey-MVP, Dylan Johnson-Defensive Award and Michael Arnhold-(team-voted)- Most Valuable Teammate. Coach Porsche McClerking presented the Fillies basketball awards. The Fillies only lost two games during the season with the final loss coming in the state tournament. The Fillies won the county championship and had only one regular season loss. McClerking said he has been around basketball all his life and thought coaching girls would be easy. He went on to say that he was wrong because young ladies bring on problems that were not in his area of expertise. He went to say that, despite the adjustments he had to make, he would not trade this season for anything. Receiving individual awards for the Fillies were: Taylor Smith-MVP, LeAnn Webb (team- voted)-Most Valuable Teammate, Marissa Belew-Most Improved, and Cheyenne Childress-Hustle Award. Football coach Nathan Wal- lace began his awards presen- tation by saying that the level of character of the people he works with is beyond one’s imagination. He said the goal of everyone affiliated with the school’s athletic programs was for the children to walk away at the end as better people, and, if they did, that was more impor- tant that wins or losses. Receiving individual foot- ball awards were, Offensive MVP-Zach Dodson, Defensive HMS football award winners:Trenton McCain, Dylan Johnson, Zach Dodson, Michael Arn- hold and Kade Pearson.
