Wednesday, September 25, marks the beginning of the annual 40 Days for Life campaign. From September 25 through November 3, the people of Las Vegas will join with people in every state of our nation and in many countries around the world for a campaign that will bring attention to the senseless ending of precious human lives in the earliest days, weeks and months of their development within the wombs of their mothers. 40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign that, over the past several years, has generated immeasurable lifesaving results in every participating community. Around the world, more than 16,000 children’s lives have been saved. 191 workers have quit their jobs in abortion clinics and
104 of these clinics have been closed permanently in places where 40 Days has been prayed, including one clinic here in Las Vegas. During the 40 Days for Life campaign, church communities are requested to adopt at least one day as their church’s day to pray. Our Lady of Las Vegas Parish will have two days of prayer on Friday, November 1 and Saturday, November 2. We will be asking especially for your prayers during this time. We desire you to pray and give peaceful witness to our faith and belief that life begins at the moment of conception. Your prayers and/or fasting during these 40 days could indeed help to save the life of a child. More information can be found on page 7. Cheryl Yiatras is the coordinator of the 40 Days for Life in our parish again this year. Thank you to Cheryl for heading up this very important event. The issue of the right to life of the unborn has been placed in a very heated political battleground between people who support the choice of allowing unborn children their right to live and people who support the choice of not allowing their right to live. While we stand behind the PRO-LIFE banner, it is still a choice and it’s a choice to allow a life to live instead of killing it. It may be interesting to know that God is pro-choice. This means that God always gives us choices; and He leaves it in our hands to make the right choice. God is the creator of all life, and a child in the womb of its mother definitely has its God-given right to live. As Catholics, we read in the New Testament about two people in the wombs of their mothers: John the Baptist and Jesus. When the Archangel Gabriel came to Mary, he told her that she would conceive and bear a son. Therefore the holy offspring to be born would be called the Son of God. When Mary visited Elizabeth, the child in her womb leaped for joy at Mary’s greeting. On December 8, the church celebrates the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. This is the dogma stating that Mary, at the first instance of her existence in her mother’s womb (St. Ann) was protected by God’s grace to be without sin. The Church recognizes the real existence and identity of Jesus, John the Baptist and Mary in their mother’s wombs. So, how can the Church negate the existence and identity of other children in their mothers’ wombs? I do not understand how people can say a child developing in the womb is not a life. It is the natural progression of development for every human being. Do we ignore the fact that a newborn baby has already been in existence and developing for nine months? An embryo develops from an egg and sperm, a fetus develops from an embryo, a baby develops from a fetus, a toddler develops from a baby, a child from a toddler, an adolescent from a child, a young adult from an adolescent, and so on. No adult would be alive today without having gone through all of these stages of human development. Eliminate anyone of those stages of human life and that life is gone. People who call themselves “pro-choice” say that a woman has every right to do what she wants with her body. While this is true, the unborn child in her womb is its own person. The unborn child is only temporarily using the mother’s womb at this stage of life for its development and protection. St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta often spoke about the lack of love of children, especially the unborn. She understood the treachery of destroying the unborn. “Any country that accepts abortion,” she said, “is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what it wants." Also, “It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish." During these 40 Days for Life, let us pray that God will enlighten us to the Truth and help us to respect and appreciate the gift of life, that He the Creator, gives to us all.
