Last Sunday I announced the Christmas mass schedule and reminded everyone that even though Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, the Sunday mass schedule will give way to the schedule we follow each year for the Christmas holy day. I announced that the Midnight Mass will be at 12 midnight, and if anyone should call and ask what time the Midnight Mass is, well… We laugh at this, because people every year do ask this question. This is only because there are parishes that have introduced “Midnight Mass” at an earlier hour. Even our Polish “Pasterka” mass, which is supposed to traditionally be held at midnight, is celebrated at 10:00pm. The truth is, according to the rubrics of Roman Catholic liturgy, there are four distinct masses of Christmas. There is the Vigil Mass, the Mass at Midnight (the Angels’ Mass), the Mass at dawn (Shepherds’ Mass) and the Mass during the day. Each one of these liturgies has its own unique purpose and focus. The Vigil Mass, which is celebrated in the early evening of December 24, relates the family heritage of Jesus and his origins. The Messiah was prophesied to be from the royal line of King David, and the genealogy narrative according to St. Matthew proclaimed at this mass puts the truth of this prophecy into prospective. Midnight Mass was a long standing tradition in the Church, allowing the faithful to celebrate the birth of Jesus at the first hour of Christmas Day. Midnight Mass was also celebrated at the first hour of Christmas Day so that the faithful could receive Holy Communion without having to fast. Years ago, it was not possible to receive Holy Communion without fasting from midnight. The focus of the Midnight Mass is the announcement by the angels to the shepherds that a Savior has been born in the City of David. The angels’ message is “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those on who his favor rests.” This narrative is taken from the Gospel according to St. Luke. The first mass on Christmas morning, after sunrise, is the Mass at Dawn. It is still sometimes called the “Shepherds’ Mass”. At this mass St. Luke continues his narrative of the birth of the savior. After the shepherds had received the amazing news, they hastened to Bethlehem to see what the angels said had taken place. Arriving, they found “Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in a manger.” The later Mass during the day sets aside the narratives of Jesus’ birth to focus on the key to the day’s celebration. At this mass the Evangelist, St. John, speaks of the majestic theology of Christ’s identity as the Word made flesh, dwelling among us. For unto us a child is born; unto us a Son is given! One feast, four separate masses. Only monasteries and those who celebrate the Liturgy of the Hours would experience the entire spectrum of the Christmas liturgy. Since most people will come to only one of the masses of Christmas, they will experience the focus of that particular liturgy at that particular time of the Christmas feast. So, if you come to a particular mass for Christmas and are not hearing the Gospel you might expect to hear, this is the reason why. All four liturgies, in their entirety, bring together the magnificent events of the mystery and miracle that is Christmas. My dear brothers and sisters, as we once again celebrate this most wonderful gift of God to our lowly human state, may we take the time to seriously think about what and how much the birth of Jesus really means. May we remember that the Incarnate God came to us with a mission to help transform our lowly condition into reflections of His glorious divinity. Let us remember that we are Christian people and that we follow the one whose birth we celebrate on December 25. We should always strive to be to imitate Him who is the Way, the Truth and the Life, and who, of course, is the reason for this glorious season. On behalf of Fr. Tom and the entire staff of Our Lady of Las Vegas Parish, I would like to extend to all of our parishioners and guests a joyful, blessed and truly Merry Christmas!
