D 24, 2017 2 — O L L V C C

Dear Parishioners and Friends, This Sunday marks the Fourth and last Sunday of the Advent season. The four candles burning on the Advent wreath remind us that our time of preparation is coming to an end, and the Promised One will soon be in our midst. Hopefully, this Advent has given us time for added prayer and reflection, and has allowed us to more deeply ponder the miracle of the incarnation and to a better appreciate the greatness of this gift.

Now, it is time for Christmas. In one of our popular Christmas carols we sing, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” Truly Christmas is that wonderful season which lights up the world with joy and merriment; feasting and good cheer. It is the season of our Savior’s birth and that is why we have every reason to celebrate. “For God so loved the world that He gave us His only Son” (Jn 3:16). When we look at the condition of the world around us, it may be a little difficult for some to celebrate. Some people even suggest that maybe we should forgo celebrating in light of all the tragedies and devastation that we have experienced this year. If Christmas were nothing more than a winter festival of frivolous merry making, then yes, maybe we should forgo it. But if we understand Christmas to be the birth of our Savior and the incarnation of our unseen God, then we have much to celebrate. And celebrate we must! With so many things wrong around us, it is Christmas that lifts up our spirits and reassures us that there is always hope. Jesus came into our world so that we might be renewed, and, with the help of His grace, be freed from the trappings of our sins and change for the better; remembering that all things are possible with God. Last Sunday we announced the Christmas mass schedule and reminded everyone that even though Christmas falls on a Monday this year, our Sunday mass obligation is important to keep. This Fourth Sunday of Advent ushers in the beginning of our Christmas celebration this year, which begins with mass at 4:00pm. All masses before 4:00pm fulfill our Sunday obligation. All masses from 4:00pm on will fulfill our Christmas obligation. In case anyone asks, Midnight Mass will begin at 12:00 midnight. This may sound a bit humorous, but every year we get several calls inquiring about the time of Midnight Mass. This is only because there are parishes that have introduced “Midnight Mass” at an earlier hour. Even our Polish “Pasterka” Mass, which is supposed to traditionally be held at midnight, is celebrated at 10:00pm. Midnight Mass is at 12:00 midnight. At this festive time of year, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your care and support of Our Lady of Las Vegas Parish. Together with Fr. Tom, it is an honor and a privilege to be able to serve you and Our Lady of Las Vegas Parish in our priestly ministry. We wish all of you a very Merry Christmas, and a happy and healthy New Year filled with God’s choicest blessings for us all.

Merry Christmas! Maligayang Pasko! Wesołych Świąt Bożego Narodzenia! Feliz Navidad! Feliz Natal!

Fr. Gerry and Fr. Tom

MASS INTENTIONSMASS INTENTIONS

Sometimes the signs God gives are unmistakable. Sometimes the signs are not so obvious. What signs do we see when we look around us? Sometimes it is hard to see God's signs because the signs of our world are so ever present and large. How many times this month have you seen this sign: "ONLY 20 (or 18, or 10, or 6 or…) MORE SHOPPING DAYS 'TIL CHRISTMAS." Do we ever stop to think, "How many praying days left until Christ-mas?"

As Pope John Paul II has reminded us: “Where life is involved, the service of charity must be profoundly consistent. It cannot tolerate bias and discrimination, for human life is sacred and inviolable at every stage and in every situation; it is an indivisible good” (The Gospel of Life, no. 87).

Fr. Gerry will be welcoming everyone to the first group meeting:

THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 2018 6:30pm - 7:30pm

Who is the Blessed Virgin Mary? Why do we honor her?

What can we learn from her?

To have these questions answered, please come to this presentation on:

SUNDAY, JANUARY 14 11:00am - 12:30pm

In Bevan Hall’s McFarland Room

God cares that we know who he is, and he longs for us to understand him better. God’s revelation of himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit affects how he relates to us, how he made us, and who he is

eternally. The doctrine of the Trinity is Essential to our understanding of him and of our faith.

A Special Presentation with a Focus to examine the ways in which the three Persons of the Trinity relate to one another, how they relate to us, and what difference this makes to our lives, will take place on:

SUNDAY, JANUARY 21 11:00am - 12:30pm

In Bevan Hall’s McFarland Room

Two Special Presentations in January for all Parishioners — Both Facilitated by Ron Vallance —
