  • 2Strolling in the cityWelcomerebro - Kumla - Hallsberg - Lekeberg

In the northern part of the city is Lilla -promenaden, offering a place to stroll and ride your bicycle. It is ap-proximately four kilometres long and takes you out to the nature reserve Oset-Rynningeviken. Along the way you will be able to enjoy ten sculptures and visit an art studio. There is also a perma-nent illuminations display.

Fifteen metres of history is a timeline on Jrntorget that describes important events during the years 1810 to 2010 in rebro, Sweden and the world. You will find it in front of the statue of Karl IV Johan (Jean Baptiste Bernadotte).

The solar system in rebro is a to-scale trek through the planets starting from the tourist office on Olof Palmes torg (Olof Palmes square) via Drottninggatan-Storgatan to the water tower Svampen (a tower shaped like a mush-room). At Svampen, you can also have a meal, enjoy a cup of coffee or simply enjoy the view. More information and maps of the area are availa-ble at our tourist offices.

In between Bergslagens formidable forests and Tivedens enchanting wilderness, the beautiful Nrke plains extend. This is where Svealands most important roads have cros-sed since the Middle Ages, helping to create a region rich in history with excellent transport links.

The city of rebro lies in the heart of the region, and has always been a meeting place and a centre of commerce. From the earliest times of the castles history to todays modern city with the Conventum conference facilities and one of Swedens most developed commercial cities. But the enduring memory for many visitors is often the beautiful inner city with the

mighty Vasa Castle in the city centre surrounded by parks, lake-side prome-nades and well-preserved buildings along the streets and squares. In addition, the countryside is always close at hand. Hjlmaren, Swedens fourth largest lake, is within walking distance of the city, and 20 km to the west, Kilsbergenss magnifi-cent blue hills await you.

In southern Kilsbergen you will find Lekeberg municipality, which not only offers nature experiences but also has a wide range of historically interesting areas such as the monastery ruins in Riseberga as the jewel in the crown. And not far away, in the heart of the plain, is Kumla whose greatest attraction paradoxically is

a mountain. It is an arti-ficial one, the fascinating Kvarntorpshgen slag heap which with its sculptures was recently designated Swedens most remarkable attraction.

In the south, Hallsberg links together Svealands railway network offering attractions such as Karin Larssons childhood home, with paintings by her husband Carl, and the deep forests of the borderland next to stergtland.

There are a lot of exciting things to do. Just take a look around. Pop into one of our tourist offices or visit any of the tourist service locations, and well tell you more.

  • 4Many chapters in Swedish history have been written inside rebro Castles thick walls.

Swedens first Parliament Act was adopted here, and this is also where Karl XIII received the news that the 1810 Parliament in rebro had chosen Jean Baptiste Bernadotte as heir to the Swedish throne.

The castles oldest parts were built in the 14th century, and at the end of the 16th century, Duke Karl, who later became King Karl IX transformed the then dilapidated medieval castle into a magnificent renais-sance castle.

The cultural reserve Karl-slund is a scenic area with a long history and is only five kilometres from rebro centre. In this idyll you will find beautiful nature, cultural and industrial history, artisan towns, shops, a garden for children and Tekniska kvarnen.

The culture reserve Karlslund was a popular place to visit as early as the 19th century. It was a beautiful area at a reasonable distance from rebro. And it still is today. Karlslunds manor house and its gardens also offer exciting environments and expe-riences. In Anckarsvrds ma-gasin there is the exhibition Magasinet (the warehouse) about distilled liquor, life at the manor and mechanical contraptions. The exhibition provides a background to Karlslunds history. During the summer of 2014 there will also be a photography exhibition at various places throughout the area.

The water tower Svampen (the mushroom) was ope-ned in May 1958. Since that time, Svampen has been one of rebros most popular attractions. Since Svampen was built, approximately 8 million people have had the opportunity to see rebro from its top. Svampen was built during the period 1955-57. The water tower was put into operation in 1957 and was officially opened during spring 1958. The designer and architect was Sune

Stortorget (the town square) is one of rebros most important historical places. This is where St. Nicolai Church is, the citys principal church since the Middle Ages, but also the place where Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was elected heir to the throne in 1810. The neo-Gothic town hall is also on the square with its glockenspiel, which in winter houses Swedens largest advent calendar. It is also here in front of the church, that the largest Christmas concert, O Holy night, is perfor-med every year on the 2nd Sunday of Advent.

There is a sister tower in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia which is 33% larger. Svampen is still used as a water tower. The water is pumped up into the hat which acts as a reservoir and a pressure equalizer for rebros drinking water.Come and enjoy the view and a cup of coffee or a bite to eat!

The dairy (Mejeriet) houses the Farm labourers museum with a workers home from the 1930s; and in Karlslunds power station on certain days, you will be able to take a look at the 100-year-old turbines.

In Karlslunds old mill building from 1889 there is a modern and exciting technological museum filled with experiences for the whole family.

The childrens garden forms a part of the area with willow tunnels, themed gardens and a maze. Dont miss strolling around the beautiful parks and gardens in Karlslund, where there is a lot to discover. Visit the kitchen garden with lush green veg-etables and flowers. In short Karlslund is the perfect destination!

    Hiking

At the edge of the hill is Skle farm where farming was still being carried out well into the 1960s, nowadays the land around the farm is used for grazing. The area is well equipped for visitors, with car parks, a beach and barbeque areas etc.

Dovrasjdalen is a popular destination due to the areas wilderness character with long, narrow lakes which lie in a deep rift valley in the bedrock. The nature reserve Herrfallsng is a classic ha-bitat with nearly 300 known species of vascular plants.

Garphyttans National Park, at the foot of Kilsbergen, is preserving the old cultivated landscapes characterised by stony, undulating ter-rain. Lush meadows full of flowers are surrounded by dense natural forests in one of Swedens oldest national parks. The park features several walking trails of va-rying lengths and difficulty.

Around Kumla is Bjrka clay pit, and Hults and Viaskogens nature reserves. The latter offer diverse and sometimes unique species. There are walks, barbeque areas and an illuminated jogging track. In Hllabrot-tet, East of Kumla is Norra Mossby and Hllkistan.

Kvismaren, southeast of rebro, is a classic bird lake with a very rich variety of species. During the autumn you will be able to see more than 10,000 cranes gather on their way south. There is nowhere else in Sweden where you can see as many cranes. Last year the rebro County Museums fantastic building celebrated its 50th anni-versary. It was completed in 1963 and the architect responsible was Nils Tesch. He was one of Swedens greatest architects at that time and was inspired by both classical architecture and new tendencies. The County Museum building he likened to a womans shoe pretty on the outside and spacious inside. In Wadkping, youll expe-rience rebro as it was be-fore. The open-air museum was created in the 1960s and is made up of farms that were saved from demolition in the southern part of cen-tral rebro. Today, it may be difficult to imagine that the small timbered farms were once rebros gran-dest buildings. Here lived distinguished shoemakers, shipmasters and weavers who supplied their wares to the King himself! Today, the small houses are used as handicraft shops, boutiques and museums; they are also used as dwellings, which

makes Wadkping a vibrant part of town. Enjoy the atmosphere! Relax with a cup of coffee in the square. Smell the freshly baked bread from the bakery, see the wood-turner at work and visit one of the exhibitions in Cajsa Wargs house (the cookbook pioneer) and the Kings cot-tage from the 16th century. The youngsters will be able to look after the animals and open their own shop in Lekladan, see page 15. In Wadkping there is always something happening so dont forget to take a look at the calendar on the home page. Musical entertain-ment, summer theatre, pup-petry and markets such as the popular Christmas and medieval markets, antique and bric-a-brac, and a turn of the century market.

In Jrle, you can really travel through time. The vintage train departs from the tiny station and takes you to the iron-makers community Pershyttan and to the idyllic wooden town of Nora. Jrle station is actually the oldest in the country. The station building was built in 1854 next to Swedens first railway line. Trains depart throughout the summer and you can choose between an authentic steam train or a vintage railcar.

Hallsberg plays a central role in the Swedish rail network, the marshalling yards there are the largest in Scandinavia.

Kvarngrden in Mullhyttan is a living historical environ-ment. In the area, there is an old mill used by the village since the 18th century. With the help of a 2.4 m water wheel, organically grown wheat and rye is milled into flour which you can buy in the little shop. In the wood-fired bakers cottage, Hyttkaka and Kvarnbrd are baked. A scale model 1:100 of the area as it looked 150 years ago can also be viewed.

Tip! Dont miss Mullhytte-Marken 12-13 July. Saturday is market day and Sunday is handicraft day, when new and ancient crafts are on display.

The small industrial com-munity Brevens Bruk, 50 km southeast of rebro is a cultural treasure. The village is different from other mining communities as a result of all the yellow buildings from the 17th century onwards which can be seen throughout the well-preserved village.

Brevens Bruk is also widely known for its special Mid-summer celebrations that attract thousands of visitors.

Tip! Midsummer celebrations are a tradition with 200-year-old rituals. Dont miss it!

Riseberga Monastery out-side Fjugesta was founded in the 12th century. At its height it owned 240 properties in six provinces, but Gustav Vasa and a great fire in 1546 put a stop to its activities and the buildings were left to decline. Today only parts of the western wall of the church remain and the entire con-vent area has recently been renovated. Guided tours are arranged every Wednesday at 18.00 throughout the summer months. Nearby is a huge amphitheatre, where plays and concerts are arranged.

Discover a real cultural trea-sure in the forests near the border to stergtland.

Around the fairytale castle Boo with its pinnacles and turrets is Boo mansion and its estate. Many of the buildings were construc-ted in the ancient Greek style, such as the church and church school with their mighty columns.

Marvel also over the exciting flora and rich wildlife. One tip is to visit the area around the estate at dusk or dawn, there is an excellent chance that you will encounter a herd of wild fallow deer, roe deer, moose and other wildlife.

The hot slag that was formed when oil was extracted from shale during the second world war created a hill more than 100 m high. The unique sculpture park located on top of the slag heap collects works of several of the countrys leading artists, such as Lars Vilks, Peter Johansson, ulla Viotti and Lenny Clarhll. Nearly every year, another work of art is added to the collection.

Kvarntorpshgen also offers a magnificent view of the Nrke plains. Since its inauguration in 1998, more than 350,000 people have visited Konst p Hg, which from the outset attracted much media at-tention, including the

    Kopparberg

Eighty km north of rebro, just next to the border of Dalarna, is the idyllic Kop-parberg. Nestled in beautiful countryside is a well-preser-ved mining community with many beautiful buildings from the golden age of mining. Two of the most splendid buildings include the beautiful courthouse and the stately red wood chip panel church. There are also several small museums, including a postal museum dedicated to the unique yellow three skilling banco-stamp, the worlds most expensive stamp. In Kopparberg, you can try to pan for gold under the expert supervision of two world champions. This year you have the chance to experience a genuine gold panning competition during the world championships from 11th to 17th August. In connection with the world champion-ships, Kopparberg will be filled to capacity as a result of the Gold Rush an event with musical entertainment and many other golden activities.

    Nora

The idyllic wooden town of Nora, 30 km north of rebro, is one of Bergslagens gems. In Nora, there is not one house the same as the other, and on the little square there are small boutiques, the town hotel and the church. Stroll around and enjoy the pictu-resque environment. Enjoy an ice cream (Nora-Glass) and stroll down to the lake. The tourist office is located in the old station house and right next door is the railway museum with steam locomotives, old rail cars, trolleys and engine depots. And best of all, it is a living museum!

From here you can go on a tour of the classic iron-makers community Pershyttan, and experience a piece of Swedish industrial history. More history can be found in the Gthlinska farm, whose interior has been preserved it still looks like it did 100 years ago when Miss Ingrid Gth-lin lived there.

    Karlskoga

In Karlskoga, four miles west of rebro, you can meet the worlds most famous Swede! The Nobel Museum in Karl-skoga is Alfred Nobels last Swedish home, Bjrkborn Manor, and the laboratory where he developed many of his inventions. You can also meet the great inventor himself in person on the theatrical guided tours that are arranged.

Next to the laboratory is Fiffiga Huset, an experimen-tal workshop with techical gadgetry and exciting phenomena for children of all ages. More exciting experiences in Karlskoga await you at the Adventure House BodaBorg. There are plenty of rooms that offer challenges, both for those who love to climb and for those who prefer to solve mind-bending challenges.

It is in the small town of Skoga that most of the mur-ders in Maria Langs novels were committed. If it is difficult to find Skoga on the map, it is because Skoga is a cover name for Nora. Maria Langs novels are more or less guide books and have given rise to a number of town walks in her footsteps. The murder scenes remain, and for the people of Nora, there is status in having had a Maria Lang corpse in the wardrobe.

The first film The killer is not the only liar was released in the cinemas in early March 2013, and a further five film adaptations premiered last autumn.

    Grythyttan

Few Swedish Inns are so distinguished as Grythyt-tan Gstgivaregrd. Most people will probably think of Carl Jan Granqvist who ran it until 1999. But the facilities date back to Queen Christinas time. Grythyttan Gstgivaregrd is the perfect 4 star hotel in Sweden for guests to thoroughly unwind at. Relax with a good book in one of the lounges or go for a lovely walk around the idyllic village and to the spectacular Mltidens Hus. Naturally you will be able to end the day with a delicious meal.

    Tiveden

In the magical primaeval forest of Tiveden, adventure is never far away. Experience the enchanting beauti-ful nature with its huge boulders, deep canyons and steep mountain ridges. You can choose yourself how to get the best experience from Tiveden. On foot, by bike or even on horseback? Or why not try a peaceful canoeing trip on one of the beautiful lakes? Maybe on the Lake Trehrningen to beautiful Vitsand? The hullabaloo of big-city life is far far away despite the fact that it is no more than 60 km to rebro. Part of Tiveden is made up of the national park where you can hike to Lake Fager-trn where the unique red water lilies bloom.

    Askersund

At the northern tip of Lake Vttern is the beautiful port city of Askersund. Join us on a cruise on the M/S Wet-tervik and experience the stunningly beautiful archi-pelago. You can also choose to get off the boat at Karl XIV Johans Summer Palace Stjernsund and go on a gui-ded tour of one of Swedens best preserved environ-ments from the early 19th century. (You can of course also reach the castle by car.) Or just enjoy the delightful harbour environment. Perhaps with an ice cream at the wharf. Or at one of the outdoor restaurants. But even the rest of the town is just perfect for relaxing walks where you can enjoy a quiet moment at one of the small cafes you encounter along the way. Just south of Askersund is Nrkes best bathing area, Hargebaden with shallow waters and a fantastic sandy beach.

    Loka

Loka is a well-known trade-mark in Sweden. However Loka is so much more than refreshing bottled mineral water. In the middle of the enchanting Bergslagen forest lies the ancient spring to which visitors have flocked for over 300 years. Relax with a spa experience in the fantastic Water Salon (Vattensalongen) and enjoy a meal to remember in the restaurant. Or work up a sweat in the new gym and then unwind next to the small lake. Loka Brunn is 30 km north of Karlskoga, just south of Grythyttan.
