Örebro Castle Tourist Information Office+46(0)19 21 21 21www.orebrotown.com/slottetSat-Sun and daily June-August

During the summer, there are daily guided tours of Örebro Castle, a trip to times gone by. Hear about nobles, prisoners and servants and of known and unknown episodes from the castle’s history. The rest of the year the castle has guided tours every Saturday and Sunday. At Easter, it is “Witch Week”, and around Halloween “Ghost Week” when you can go on adventures in the middle of the night – but only if you are brave enough!

During the school holidays, special guided tours are arranged for children, and on Saturdays and Sundays, you can book children’s parties at the castle.

The water tower Svam-pen (the mushroom) was opened in May 1958. Since that time, Svampen has been one of Örebro’s most popular attractions. Since Svampen was built, approximately 8 mil-lion people have had the opportunity to see Örebro from its top. Svampen was built during the period 1955-57 and was officially opened during spring 1958. The designer and architect was Sune Lindström, AB Vattenbyggnadsbyrån Stockholm.

The tower is 58 metres high and can accom-modate 9 million litres of water. Svampen has just over 100,000 visitors every year. There is a sister tower in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia which is 33% larger.

Svampen is still used as a water tower. The water is pumped up into the hat which acts as a reservoir and a pressure equalizer for Örebro’s drinking water.

Summer events: 23/6-10/8

In Wadköping, you’ll experience Örebro as it was before. The open-air museum was created in the 1960s and is made up of farms that were saved from demolition in the southern part of central Örebro. Today, it may be difficult to imagine that the small timbered farms were once Örebro’s grandest buildings.

Today, the small houses are used as handicraft shops, boutiques and museums; they are also used as dwel-lings, which makes Wadkö-ping a vibrant part of town. Enjoy the atmosphere! Relax with a cup of cof-fee in the square. Smell the freshly baked bread from the bakery, see the wood-turner at work and visit one of the exhibitions in Cajsa Warg’s house (the cookbook pioneer) and the King’s cottage from the 16th century.

In Wadköping there is al-ways something happening so don’t forget to take a look at the calendar on the home page. Musical enter-tainment, summer theatre, puppetry and markets such as the popular Christmas and medieval markets, antique and bric-a-brac, and a “turn of the century” market.

Many chapters in Swedish history have been written inside Örebro Castle’s thick walls.

Sweden’s first Parliament Act was adopted here, and this is also where Karl XIII received the news that the 1810 Parliament in Örebro had chosen Jean Baptiste Bernadotte as heir to the Swedish throne.

The castle’s oldest parts were built in the 14th cen-tury, and at the end of the 16th century, Duke Karl, who later became King Karl IX transformed the then dilapidated medieval castle into a magnificent renaissance castle.

Today, the former royal palace has become one of Örebro’s biggest tourist attractions, with exhibi-tions, shows and other events held throughout the year. There is also a restaurant with fantastic outdoor seating in sum-mer, conference facilities and assembly rooms.

Örebro is cycle city number one! There are 220 km of cycling and hiking trails and it is an easy and convenient way to get around. The Öre-bro City Hike and Run Trails take you along Svartån out to the beautiful countryside which is very close to Örebro city centre. Pack a picnic basket and try on one of the local cycle trails such as Hemfjärden runt, Lången runt, and, for those who prefer to expend a little more energy, Tysslingerundan.

There is also one of the country’s longest fully coordinated MTB systems, nearly 950 km of trails in Bergslagen in the north, Kilsbergen, west of Örebro and Tiveden in the south

In Kumla, you can combine nature, culture and science with a cycle trip which takes you past 25 sculptures pro-duced by several prominent Swedish artists. There are also 5 leisure trails and MTB trails in Kvarntorp open-air recrea-tion area. A number of road bike trails are also planned.

Kilsbergen with its magni-ficent and exciting nature is a stretch of wilderness close to the city just two km west of Örebro. People have ventured here for decades to walk, swim, exercise and not least, to ski, both cross-country and downhill. This is where you will be able to enjoy views, the clean air, the silence and the wildlife which is right on your doorstep.

The 280 km long Berg-slagsleden trail is one of Sweden’s longest hiking trails. The trail is divided into 17 stages that are between 7 and 23 km long. Stages 8-13 cross the Kilsbergen mountains and are easily reached from Örebro. In Ånnaboda there are also several circular loops of different lengths. Generally speaking, the terrain is more demanding on the Bergslag trail the further north you go, and the further south you go, the flatter the terrain. Maps and more information can be found on www.berg-slagsleden.se

Besides the Bergslagsle-den trail, there are a great number of hiking trails in Örebro and throughout the county. Kvarntorp’s open-air recreation area is an attractive area with extensive plant and animal life, golf course, hiking trails, horse riding trails, barbecue areas and nature reserves.

Storstenshöjden is 20 km of Örebro. There are nine specially prepared pistes, a “crossover land” and sledding slopes that attract families and skiing experts alike. The lift queues are sel-dom long; the five lifts have a capacity of 5,000 people per hour and it is extremely safe on the pistes.

If you prefer cross-country skiing, head for Ånnaboda right next to Storstens-höjden. There are more than 70 km of prepared ski trails ranging from short loops to the 27 km long Kilsbergsspåret that runs all the way to Nora. In Ånnaboda there is also a 5 km long artificial snow trail.

Garphyttan’s National Park, at the foot of Kilsbergen, is preserving the old cultiva-ted landscapes characte-rised by stony, undulating terrain. Lush meadows full of flowers are surrounded by dense natural forests in one of Sweden’s oldest national parks. The park features several walking trails of varying lengths and difficulty.

Around Kumla is Björka clay pit, and Hult’s and Viaskogen’s nature reser-ves. The latter offer diverse and sometimes unique species. There are walks, barbeque areas and an illuminated jogging track. In Hällabrottet, East of Kumla is Norra Mossby and Hällkistan.

The nature reserve Skåle klint offers fantastic views of the surrounding coun-tryside. Bring a packed lunch on a clear day and enjoy the scenery from above. Skåle klint is a part of the fault scarp which formed the southern shore of Lake Tisaren. Primary rock is dominant here and forms a majestic area where deep, damp rift valleys cut trough the area from several directions. From Skåle klint there are fantastic views. Skåle klint reaches a height of 195 m above sea level and around 95 m above the surface of Lake Tisaren! At the edge of the hill is Skåle farm where farming was still being carried out well into the 1960s, nowadays the land around the farm is

Tysslingen is a swan lake which beats all others – Europe’s largest single resting area for swans. Thousands of swans come here on their way north to gather their strength before continuing their journey. In the spring, up to 4,000 birds can be seen on one day. Alnängarnas water park is an oasis of tranquillity within walking distance from the city. In the area you will find hiking trails, barbecue areas and much more. In the midst of the greenery, is the popu-lar Naturens hus where there is a restaurant and a cafe.

Continuing eastbound, and you will reach Hjälmar-stranden with its nature reserve Rynningeviken and Oset, which has one of the country’s richest bird-wat-ching areas.

Kvismaren, southeast of Örebro, is a classic bird lake with a very rich variety of species. During the autumn you will be able to see more than 10,000 cranes gather on their way south. Next to the Kvismaren is Öby Kulle, where early in the spring, you can see hundreds of grass snakes that have recently emerged to warm themselves in the spring sun.

These days it is calm in the small commu-nity between Kumla and Hallsberg. But 100 years ago, Sannahed was one of Sweden’s largest military practice grounds and barracks. Enjoy a walk through the 2.5 km trail “Regementsmar-schen” (the Regiment march).

There is a newly opened equipment store which is 150 m north of the military museum. It is a storage building built for military purposes and it is also a shop. Today it houses around 19 dif-ferent museums which all have different themes depicting how we once lived.

Also take a look at the stately hall of the officers mess, see the Museum of military history and the cottage of the Hussar officers which depicts how the Hussar Corps had their barracks during the 19th century. Kumla-Sannahed’s old homes-tead museum is next to the museum on the other side of the road.

Kvarngården in Mullhyttan is a living historical envi-ronment. In the area, there is an old mill used by the village since the 18th cen-tury. With the help of a 2.4 m water wheel, organically grown wheat and rye is milled into flour which you can buy in the little shop. In the wood-fired baker’s cottage, Hyttkaka and Kvarnbröd are baked.

The small industrial com-munity Brevens Bruk, 50 km southeast of Örebro is a cultural treasure. The village is different from other mining communities as a result of all the yellow buildings from the 17th century onwards which can be seen throughout the well-preserved village.

Riseberga Monastery out-side Fjugesta was founded in the 12th century. At its height it owned 240 pro-perties in six provinces, but Gustav Vasa and a great fire in 1546 put a stop to its activities and the buildings were left to decline. Guided tours are arranged every Wednesday at 18.00 throughout the summer

Stortorget (the town square) is one of Örebro’s most important historical places. This is where St. Nicolai Church is, the city’s principal church since the Middle Ages, but also the place where Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was elected heir to the throne in 1810. The neo-Gothic town hall is also on the square with its glockenspiel. In Tångeråsa, you can visit one of Sweden’s oldest wooden churches. Open daily 6-26/7, kl. 13.00-17.00.

In Järle, you can really travel through time. The vintage train departs from the tiny station and takes you to the “iron-makers community” Pershyttan and to the idyllic “wooden” town of Nora. Hallsberg plays a central role in the Swedish rail network, the marshalling yards there are the largest in Scandinavia.

Artist Karin Larsson, born in Hallsberg worked in the shadow of her famous husband Carl Larsson. But with her elegant furnishings and beautiful textiles, Karin Larsson was far ahead of her time. In her parents’ home, Bergööska huset several of Karin’s creations are on display, both furniture and paintings. You will surely recognize several of the items, but you may not know who was behind them.

The largest room is de-corated by her husband Carl’s impressive murals of the Bergöö family and Hallsberg of that time.

This year’s summer exhibi-tion in Bergööska huset is called ”Kvinnliga avtryck”, about women in the Öre-bro region from the 19th century until today.

It is now a popular place for people to visit and provides a different exhibition envi-ronment for the sculpture exhibition “Konst på Hög” (Art on High).

The unique sculpture park located on top of the slag heap collects works of several of the country’s leading artists, such as Lars Vilks, Peter Johans-son, Ulla Viotti and Lenny Clarhäll. Nearly every year, another work of art is added to the collection. Kvarntorpshögen also of-fers a magnificent view of the Närke plains. Since its inauguration in 1998, more than 350,000
