Anzac Day School Service
On Friday, we held our annual Anzac service here at school. It was another opportunity for our students to remember the sacrifice many have made throughout the years to ensure the freedom we enjoy today. A very special thank you to our SRC Executive team – Ava Sanderson, Rhys Summerville, Joseph Hogan and Georgia Hughes, and Vice Captain Mia Hardy for running the moving service. Year 4 Excursion Unfortunately, due to numbers, the Year 4 excursion to Sydney cannot go ahead. This decision was a very hard one for the Stage 2 staff and myself, as excursions have so many benefits for students and are a wonderful opportunity. I regret that this decision has had to be made and I understand that we will have disappointed students and parents/carers. The Stage 2 staff and myself have been working on an alternative day excursion to Newcastle to discover important historical sites related to convict times and the stage 2 history unit. The cost of this excursion will be approximately $50.00. Letters to parents/carers were sent home yesterday regarding the Year 4 Sydney excursion cancellation and reimbursements. Although excursions are a wonderful learning experience, each year the school runs at a loss to provide these experiences. The school does not make any profit and most years the school needs to add additional funding to ensure excursions can go ahead. Thank you for your understanding and support. The decision to cancel an excursion is a very difficult one and was not made lightly. Found in Elliot Street – Car key on an orange tag – can be collected from the office.
Happy Mother’s Day to all our Mums, Carers and significant others. I hope you have a lovely day and are spoilt.

Author visit – Anna Fienberg In week 4 on Wednesday, 22nd May we are really looking forward to a visit to our school by the award winning author Anna Fienberg. Anna has written more than 40 books for children and young adults and thanks to the Mid Coast Libraries “Great Book Festival” we are lucky enough to have her visiting our school. She will be talking to Years 2-6 about her experiences as a children’s author and I’m sure she will be telling us all about her most famous character, Tashi. We’ll have a report on her visit in a future newsletter. National Simultaneous Storytime Also happening on Wednesday, 22nd May students from Gloucester Public will join millions of other children around Australia at 11am in participating in National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS). NSS is held annually and every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres and many other places around the country. The aim of NSS is to promote the value of reading and literacy. This year the story chosen to be read to the children is Alpacas with Maracas. Kim Macdonald Teacher Librarian

School Cricket Team continues their success
We are through to Round 5! Last Wednesday, the boys hosted Bulahdelah Central School in Round 4 of the NSW PSSA Cricket Competition. With Captain Rhys again losing the toss, we were
sent in to bat and were in trouble early with a few of our top order batsman falling cheaply. Andrew Fraser steadied the ship with a measured innings until the drinks break, but the team struggled to build early partnerships. With only 35 on the board at drinks, we needed to get going. After Andrew’s dismissal, Lachlan Sansom and Jackson Moore came to the rescue, moving the runs along nicely. Jacob Edwards and Asher Baker also batted well, contributing runs to the total. We finished our 25 overs with a respectable 103 for our opposition to chase. Wary of some handy cricketers in the Bulahdelah team, it was up to our bowlers and the supporting fielders to perform. Once again, they certainly did. Rhys and Jackson opened the ends, with Jackson jagging one of their openers early. Nick Maggs came on taking a wicket with his first ball and another in the following over. Bulahdelah began to look rattled with the mounting pressure of tight bowling and runs hard to come by. Wickets began tumbling and the visitors limped to 5-28 at the halfway mark. After the break, Bulahdelah never threatened, with runs few and batsmen simply holding up their ends. They lost their last wicket in the final over with 50 runs in the book. The boys once again showed excellent sportsmanship, with the following message being sent through by the opposition team manager: “Your team are a great group of boys and played a good game, and more importantly, fantastic sportsmanship. They should be very proud of themselves and how they have represented their school. We wish you guys all the best in the next round.” Lovely sentiments indeed. The boys now have a break until the beginning of Term 4. We await the results of the game between New Lambton PS and Cardiff PS, with the possibility of a road trip to Newcastle on the cards. Well done, lads! I must make a very special mention of both Mark Edwards and Mick Fraser, who really helped us out of a bind with the last minute withdrawal of one of the
umpires. Mark made himself available to assist for the entire match, and for this we are so very thankful. Without his support, it would have been a real challenge to get the game completed. We owe you one, Mark! Rod Maggs – GPS Cricket Coordinator

WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY 17 MAY 2019
Well it’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts talking about walking! Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine. You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by: • Walking with them the whole way to school • If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop • If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way. Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes, it also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic. Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so get planning your own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 17 May 2019!

ZONE CROSS COUNTRY
Congratulations to our 29 students who attended the Manning Zone Cross Country Carnival at Wingham last Friday. Each student competed with enthusiasm, all achieving outstanding results. Mrs Willis and I were proud of their sportsmanship which was outstanding and commendable throughout the day.
Thank you to all the parents who helped with transporting students and equipment on the day. Congratulations and good luck to Riley Schafer who will be representing the Manning Zone at the Regional Carnival on 31st May. Kate Jackson, Cross Country Coordinator.
Mothers’ Day Stall – Thursday 9th May
Our annual Mothers’ Day stall will be held this Thursday, 9th May from 9.15 – 10.45am. Please ensure your child has between $1.00 and $5.00 to purchase a gift for their mum/carer or a significant person in their life. (One gift per child.) Thank you to the P&C for organising the gifts and volunteering time to run the stall for the students of Gloucester Public School.
