C meet LAST Monday each MONTH, 7.00pm Thursday 19 May, 2011
FROM THE PRINCIPAL: This week: Fun Run & Sausage Sizzle P
& C Forum Rule of the Week Stage 2 excursion Fun Run and
Sausage Sizzle Thank you students, staff and parents for such a
great day. As we expected, behaviour was terrific and support for
sports houses was incredible. The weather was pleasant and we had a
fun run. Many thanks to the sporting parents who took part in the
parents’ run to conclude the day.
Without a small band of dedicated volunteers, we couldn’t have
done all the behind the scenes work. My sincere thanks to parents
Brenda Borrowman, Lee Beveridge and Jo Day who operated the sausage
sizzle and mobile canteen all day; Larry Katz, our GA who only
works half a day and who volunteered his own time in the afternoon
to pack up and drive equipment back; Gary Willett, one of our great
and reliable relief teachers who volunteered for the whole day.
It’s hard work to set up activities like these off site and we
couldn’t have done it without you – thank you.
The job of collecting sponsorship is well underway and we
appreciate your earliest attention to this so that we can organise
prizes.
Our school athletics carnival comes up towards the end of June
and it would be great to see lots more helpers to assist on the day
to reduce the workload for our regular faces.
P & C Forum It was terrific to see the staffroom packed with
the parents and citizens who attended the forum on Monday evening.
Sharryn Brownlee and Leanne Taylor from the Central Coast Council
of P & Cs led the forum and provided loads of information and
answered many questions. We took more questions and hopefully we
can answer these next Monday when we hold an AGM to elect a new P
& C.
Some of the questions included: How formal/informal does the P
& C have to be? Does there have to be titles for roles of
executive? What are the role descriptions of executive? How much
time would I need to dedicate if I was to take on a
role? Can we share executive roles? How do we encourage more
people to take part? How does the P & C help my child? How does
the P & C help me? Rule of the Week This week’s rule is ‘Arrive
at school after 8.20 am but before 8.50am.’ School supervision
commences at 8.20am. Children arriving before this time should only
be there because they are enrolled in before school care or
involved in a school activity that is supervised by a teacher.
Children arriving after 8.50am are considered to be late and need a
late note from the office. The reason for this request is to meet
our legal obligations for child protection and safety and to assist
parents to meet theirs. Many thanks.
Stage 2 excursion to Cabramatta Today Stage 2 went on their
excursion to Cabramatta to support their learning in multicultural
education and develop intercultural understandings. Schools have an
obligation to promote children’s understanding of all forms of
discrimination including race discrimination. This excursion is an
important part of our school curriculum, particularly as our local
community does not have the variety of resources to explore
multiculturalism.
The Australian Human Rights Commission (HREOC) reports that
“Almost one half of all Australians were either born overseas or
had a parent born in another country. Our country is also home to
the world’s oldest continuing culture.” All people in Australia –
no matter what their national, cultural or religious background –
have a right to feel safe, respected and part of the community in
which they live.
In March 2011 HREOC released a Freedom of Religion and Belief
Research report "One of the conclusions that can be drawn from this
research, is that there is a need to develop appropriate responses
to the unique and varied Australian religious contexts and
settings, including ancient Indigenous traditions, Christian
heritages, and minority faith communities," said Commissioner Innes
(Race Discrimination Commissioner).
"Additionally, when we are considering issues of discrimination
and equality, as we do at the Commission, the research shows that
there is a pressing need for education about religions, if we are
to reduce ignorance and fear, while promoting intergroup
respect."

Simultaneous Storytime Orara Public School From Halfway Around
the World Premier’s Reading Challenge
“Feathers for Phoebe”
On Wednesday 25th May our students are invited to our Library at
11.00 am to participate in the National Simultaneous Storytime 2011
and listen to a reading of “Feathers for Phoebe” a wonder-fully
illustrated Australian tale about self-esteem, self-acceptance and
learning that appearances aren't everything. This is an optional
lunchtime activity.
Orara Public School Library recently lost books in a fire. We
are sending a copy of “Feathers for Phoebe” to Orara PS on behalf
of the students from Kincumber PS. When Kincumber PS was in the
same situation in the past, many schools assisted us. This is an
op-portunity for our students to show charity for their peers.
From Halfway Around the World – a Book Week performance for K-6
students will be at Kincumber PS on the 24th August. The cost is
$4.00, notes will be coming home later this term.
Congratulations to all the students who have started the
Premier’s Reading Challenge. I encourage all students to read a PRC
book each week. Also, a special mention to Stage 1 students Sasha
and Caitlin who have successfully logged onto the PRC 2011.
Students may log into their PRC Reading Record from home via their
DET portal.
