Exploring Avant-Garde, Theatrical and Experimental FashionKnown for their avant-garde, theatrical and experimental approach to fashion, Romance Was Born has achieved things most fashion designers only dream of. Romance Was Born has graced the covers of Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and ELLE, dressed celebrities Sia, Miley Cyrus and Cate Blanchett and notably is stocked by leading Australian fashion retailer David Jones. These designers only know one road; and that is to be bold and innovative, keeping their collections fresh and experimental, avoiding mainstream ready-to-wear collections.

Romance Was Born avoids ‘fast fashion’, instead focussing on artistic collaborations with the likes of Australian fashion royalty Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson. A word from the Urban Couture 2016 Ambassadors on being role models for emerging Australian designers and about how only one year into their career they turned down an internship at Galliano to pursue their dream at home in Australia:

“Urban Couture is an excellent program bringing support and a sense of community to emerging creatives. We feel like we have such an important role to play in helping students and emerging designers learn more about the retail industry and encourage them to undertake a realistic approach to their career.

It has taken us 10 years to build Romance Was Born. When we first went to Paris we thought we would be showing there in five years time… I mean, we had no idea that you have to be invited to present there. No one teaches you things like that about the industry in college. It is for this very reason that it’s important to get as much experience as you can and undertake work placements or internships at a fashion house to learn the ropes, then spend time exploring your own practice and to identify who you are as a designer and work out what you want to say as a brand.

We think it is important to be authentic and have your own signature and we want to show young creatives it is possible to have your own independent successful business in Australia. How you achieve that is different for each individual, but it is about giving it a go and being authentic as a brand.

Romance Was Born came about with a mutual love of making things, particularly fabric and clothing. Luke and I met at college and became friends and realised we had similar interests in fashion and began making costumes together at our houses. We wanted

to enter a competition someone told us about while we were still studying, so we needed a name to call ourselves and what we were doing. Luke’s cousin had a badge with Romance Was Born on it with holographic stars and rainbow hearts and it seemed pretty spot on for us. When we were in Italy for the competition we were offered internships at Galliano, but we had already been approached by a public relations company to represent us. We chose to come home and start our own brand as we had never been to Europe and it was a bit early for us to leave Australia.

One of the biggest influences on our careers has been Australian fashion icons Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson. In the 1970s when many Australian designers were copying what was happening overseas, Kee celebrated what was unique to our shores and in 1973 opened a boutique called Flamingo Park in The Strand Arcade selling clothing by her and Jackson. Famous for her eclectic mix of global influences, from Aboriginal Australian to early European and the exotic arts of Africa, India, Asia and South America, Kee became well known for her distinctive style of kitschy Australian wool knitted jumpers using the vibrant colours and designs of the Australian bush.

We always looked up to Jenny Kee as she made such a huge impact on the cultural landscape of the 80s and it paved the way for us to pursue our dreams in Australia.

Most recently we have dressed Sia and Miley Cyrus and some of our most loved past clients include Cate Blanchett, Catherine Martin and Grimes.

Whilst dressing celebrities is always inspiring, a major achievement for our business was signing with David Jones. It not only allowed us to increase our production levels but also it signified a maturity in our label and an acknowledgement from the Australian fashion industry that we had really cemented a place in the national market.

We are looking forward to presenting our collections in Paris next season and hope to gain some momentum internationally. At the moment we are working on our next show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia that will be our tenth show which is so exciting for us.

We are so thrilled to be in Joondalup to officially open the Urban Couture program in 2016 and we hope to see you at some of the extraordinary events throughout March.”

Label/brand name: Pip & Printer

In which suburb are you based? Dianella

When did you start your label? July 2014

Where did you study fashion/textiles? I completed a Bachelor of Creative Industries majoring in Environmental and Spatial Design at Edith Cowan University (ECU) and a Masters of Design: Display and Events at Edith Cowan University.

What motivated you to enter the fashion industry? I call myself a surface designer or a textile designer. I dabbled in some screen-printing units during my master’s degree and fell in love with the printmaking method. I decided to start my own label after I finished my masters, as I wanted a creative outlet outside of my regular job. It has since become my full-time gig, and I can’t wait to expand further.

How would you describe your design and textile-making process? I screen-print using light sensitive emulsion that enables me to paint patterns directly onto my screens and then pull gradients of ink through onto fabric. Each print is unique and has a different arrangement of colour.

What inspires your collections? Colour! I am obsessed with exploring colour combinations and blending techniques.

Where do you want your brand to be in five years time? I’m gearing up towards creating some wearable pieces and hopefully moving more into the fashion realm, but I think I will always create a mix of home-wares and accessories.

What recent projects have you been working on? I was just in Hong Kong exhibiting my textile designs. I am currently curating an exhibition of architectural sketches, devising colour schemes for a community development project. I am on the board for the design of the redevelopment for my hometown’s hospital, teaching at ECU plus more. My career is extremely varied and always busy.

Emily Wills is the creative director of SURFACE 1°22. The name of her business is inspired by her shared time between Singapore and Perth, with 1°22 being the latitude of her studio in Singapore. When in Western Australia Wills spends her time designing screen and digital prints, blogging, running workshops and drinking copious cups of tea and in Term One of 2016 she also worked with Belridge Secondary College, teaching high school students how to create their own prints for inclusion in their art portfolios.

In her various manifestations she has worked as a fashion designer, illustrator, printed textile designer and design educator. After eight years of lecturing in tertiary education, Emily developed Paper Pattern Print to simplify the design process and teach surface pattern design to a global audience.

Urban Couture presents a selection of workshops with freelance textile designer, design educator and SURFACE 1º22 founder Emily Wills so you can learn how to design your own prints for application on pillow cases, phone covers, soft furnishings, clothing plus much more.

Want to learn how to design your own patterns and print them onto ready-made products? Emily Wills will take you through the process of designing basic units and tiled repeat patterns that can be digitally printed onto wallpaper, gift wrap, tote bags, fabrics, and garments.

Sara Winfield is a Western Australian artist and designer currently based in Dunsborough. After studying art through high school with a distinct focus on textile and garment construction, Sara pursued her tertiary studies in fashion and textile design at the Central Institute of Technology. It was here she realised her love for illustrations and painting, leaving her course with encouragement by her tutors to pursue her profession as an artist.

Entranced with line and colour Sara’s artworks are in a way an extension of herself, inspired by internal feelings and emotions, ultimately creating the founding subject of her work. Driven by her personal ambition to live a happy, fulfilling life, and to always be creating, Sara channels her creative energies into her works, featuring her signature doe-eyed girls with large, watery eyes, white hair and pouty lips.

Since the purchase of her work by fashion savvy Rebecca Judd, Sara Winfield’s career has sky rocketed with hundreds of commissions to date.

Sara will be painting a large-scale mural at the Joondalup Festival as part of this year’s Urban Couture program.

Sara will be painting at the following times at Central Park in Joondalup’s City Centre:

Saturday 19 March, 1.00pm – 6.00pmSunday 20 March, 2.00pm – 6.00pm (6.00pm live fashion runway show in front of the mural)

Fashion is now deemed a significant cultural force worthy of serious study alongside other popular art forms such as theatre, advertising and film.

It is critical to acknowledge fashion as a form of communication, as a particular branch of aesthetic theory and the representation of the body and also its economic impact.

This exhibition will invite artists working in textiles, paint, sculpture, digital and photographic media who use fashion as a tool to connect with audiences, to exhibit their work as part of Urban Couture 2016.

Featuring Sara Winfield, Anya Brock, Rose Church and Elle Campbell.

Sweep bronzer under the apples of your cheeks and just above your brow. Work your illuminator on

the high points of your face, centre of the brows, tip of the nose, cupids bow and on the high points of the

cheeks.

Take your look to the next level with big colours, like a

pomegranate pink or burnt orange lipstick.

Mention Urban Couture when purchasing a one-on-one makeup lesson for a friend and you can join in free of charge.

T: 0419 755 096E: [email protected]: scartistry.com.au

*Lessons must be purchased before the 30th April 2016.Vouchers are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase. Lessons are non transferable and cannot be exchanged.

Keep your foundation minimal, only applying

coverage to the areas that need it. A bronzing primer

will give your skin the appearance of a more even complexion and it will help your makeup last longer.

Balance your makeup look by matching the

tone of your eye shadow, to your blush and lip

colour. Keep the cools with the cools and the warms with the warms.

The best way to achieve a sun-kissed summer look is with

a good bronzer and a liquid illuminator.
