VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

TO CLEAN LAKE STOREY SHORELINE

Why Innovation?

Innovation has always played a majorrole in the growth and productivity ofU.S. firms, accounting for almost 50 per-cent of all U.S. GDP growth. To sustainand improve our capacity for growth andour ability to compete, we need to inno-vate more, innovate better and innovatefaster in the four dimensions of value:speed, quality, price and convenience.

Fortunately, Illinois has a long tradition ofproducing world-class innovations, fromthe invention of the zipper to the creationof the world's first exchange-tradedweather derivatives by the ChicagoMercantile Exchange. Our challenge is tomake innovation part of everything wedo. It can happen in any sector and take

hold in start-ups as well as maturefirms.

For Illinois to be competitive, wehave to catapult ourselves over thefray and make sure our firms and all ofour enterprises are as innovative, entre-preneurial, creative and globally connect-ed as possible. Because, in the end, wewill compete not on the regulatory or taxpolicies we enact, which can easily bematched by other jurisdictions, but onour ability to create new and differentsolutions to tomorrow’s challenges. Thereal competition we face will be overideas — who creates them and who hasthe capacity to turn those ideas intovalue.

We maintain that those states that strate-gically and proactively identify, cultivate, and actively link together and leverageall of the innovation and entrepreneurialassets at their disposal will be the lead-ers in the 21st century economy. Thosewho do not will not have a bright future. At best, they will remain where they areas others in the world adapt to thechanging dynamic environment andinvest the time and resources to build acompetitive, growth economy that raisesthe standard of living for everyone.

The annual Lake Storey Clean Up Day is scheduled forSaturday, October 15th and volunteers are needed to assist inthis effort.

As you may be aware, Lake Storey is drawn down each fall tohelp grow the fish population. The low water level enablesgreater access to the shoreline and exposes trash and debristhat has accumulated during the year. With the greater shore-line exposure, this is an excellent opportunity to clean aroundthe lake.

We encourage you to volunteer for this purpose. Volunteersare asked to meet at 8:00 A.M. at the warming shelter nearthe east boat ramp directly off North Henderson Street/USRoute 150. Trash will be picked up along the shoreline ofLake Storey until Noon. Volunteers are asked to wear glovesand boots or hard soled shoes. Trash bags and refreshmentswill be provided.

This is a great opportunity for nature enthusiasts, communityservice organizations, businesses and residents to help pre-serve and enhance one of the area's most beautiful naturaltreasures. Lake Storey Park features 411 acres of communityrecreation and includes playgrounds, ball fields, a beach, acampground, a multipurpose trail and a 130 acre lake withfishing and boating.

Please plan to join uson October 15th andhelp improve our localenvironment. Foradditional informa-tion, please contactthe City ofGalesburg PublicWorks Department,345-3623.

WHAT IS THE SOIL AND

WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT?

Through our Environmental Task Force, we have the opportunity

to work with the Knox County Soil and Water Conservation

District (SWCD). The County office was established in 1944 and

is currently located at 233 South Soangetaha Road.

Soil and Water Conservation Districts are subdivisions of state

government, created under an Illinois law passed in 1937. Our

District Office provides a wide variety of soil and water manage-

ment services and information, including:

 Conservation planning and tillage information

 Land use planning

 Soils information

 Erosion control practices

 Water management

 Forest management and tree planting

 Conservation education

 Wildlife area establishment

 Flood prevention assistance

Assistance to local government agencies in planning

resource development

Each year, the SWCD Office also holds district sales of root tree

seedlings, fish sales, soil testing kits and related conservation

products. Our local office has been instrumental in organizing

and carrying out our annual Cedar Creek Clean Up Days, provid-

ing staff and equipment to assist in this endeavor.

We are fortunate to have a SWCD office in Knox County, provid-

ing resources to our area residents, both urban and rural. For

additional information on services offered, please call their office

at 342-5714.

CREATE A CULTURE OF INNOVATION IN YOUR ORGANIZATION

Organizations cannot expect to survive without constant innovation. Innovation is woven into the fabric of the American spirit and has created the entrepreneurial drive that has made the U.S. a nation of tremendous wealth and opportunity.

Competing in the global marketplace has been a catalyst for incredible change and improvement over the past ten years. Organizations that recognized major economic shifts in the late 90’s jumped head first into innovation in one form or another in order to survive.

Innovations such as increased speed, niche markets, better quality, outsourcing and process improvements have served to keep U.S. manufacturers globally competitive. But that’s not enough.

Constant, repetitive innovation that includes new products, technologies, and services will be the key to survival for U.S. companies. This program will help you design your strategy for serial innovation.
