Like many folks, Louisville accountant and KET contributor Steve Kerrick likes

to channel surf. But unlike some others, when he sits down in front of the television, it’s not to zone out — but to actively feed his need for learning.

“As I channel hopped around, I would come across these KET programs that would catch my interest and found myself watching more and more KET programs,” said the University of Louisville graduate, who also received a scholarship to play baseball for the Cardinals.

“Over the past probably 15 years, I started developing my admiration for KET,” added the former shortstop from Elizabethtown in Hardin County, the early home of the 16th president.

“Some of my favorite programs are Kentucky Life and its program about Lincoln, ‘I, too, am a Kentuckian,’ and some of the programs on the Civil War,” he said. “The history of Kentucky is really interesting to me and learning more about the state, its history, and the people — that, really, is entertainment to me.”

Still an athlete, Kerrick is a fan of the outdoors, enjoying hiking, nature-watching, target shooting, and even yard work — so it’s no wonder he also enjoys the abundance of KET programs featuring the natural world. A particular favorite, especially this time of year, is Nature’s “My Life as a Turkey,” in which a naturalist is accepted by the young birds as a parental figure.

Calling himself a lifelong learner, Kerrick found that when he completed his accounting degree, he still had

a thirst for education so he earned an MBA. Now he takes as many continuing education courses as he can and still finds time to squeeze in classes in Spanish, a language in which he one day hopes to become fluent.

Kerrick said that the personal satisfaction he’s received by watching KET has made him something of a zealot among his friends, whom he frequently emails about watching particular programs. A natural progression for him, he said, was to begin contributing to KET both monetarily and with his time.

“I have gotten a lot of enjoyment out of the programs and it’s such a good cause. I hope my small contribution of time and resources can help continue that legacy so that others can enjoy it, as well,” he said.

Contributing financially to KET and its mission to educate, Kerrick said, not only benefits him, but contributes to the overall educational level of the state.

“Whether it’s formal education — getting your GED and being

inspired by Dropping Back In, or any of the other programs which help the educators help our citizens — is good for our Commonwealth. That’s on the formal side,” he said.

“But the programming I enjoy at night just sitting down watching is not going to get me a degree or anything like that, it’s just good knowledge to have and I really enjoy it.”

And it’s personally inspiring, Kerrick said, to witness KET’s influence firsthand. As a member of KET’s Friends Board, he has volunteered during TeleFund, KET’s

on-air fundraiser, at public events, and more.

“As I’ve gotten involved with the Friends Board and being out in the community a little bit — whether it’s working the booth at the state fair or the booth at the St. James Court Art Show — I hear people come up and talk about how much they love KET or how much they love a particular program,” he said.

“Hearing their passion and their same love for the programs that are provided through KET is so satisfying.”

Though he long ago hung up his cap and glove, Kerrick still approaches causes he cares about with the same drive as his days in

the dugout. A recruiter as well, he’s even enlisted his family to help him spread KET’s message.

“I told my wife, Sharon, what to expect when we worked together at the fair, and I think she was a little skeptical,” he remembered. “But when we finished she said, ‘wow these people just come up to you and start talking to you and giving you their life story about how KET has affected them!’”

“Seeing that is pretty powerful,” he said.

“I have gotten a lot of enjoyment out of the programs and it’s such a good cause. I hope my small contribution of time and resources can help continue that legacy so that others can enjoy it as well.”

What do 10,000 toy soldiers, a stuffed buffalo, and KET’s Kentucky Collectibles have in common? The answer is

the Frazier History Museum, home to one of the country’s largest public displays of toy soldiers — and the new season of KET’s popular appraisal series. Hosted by Dave Shuffett and Amy Hess, the series features appraisals of items brought in by viewers, as well as visits to some collectible items from around the state. The new season premieres Saturday, Nov. 1 at 4:30/3:30 pm on KET and Monday, Nov. 3 at 7:30/6:30 pm on KET2. When KET decided to take the show on the road to Louisville, the Frazier Museum was an easy choice, said producer Erin Lowry. “The museum was an obvious partner, mainly because we have a lot of firearms appraised on the programs, and the Frazier is known for its expertise,” she said. The museum’s spacious galleries also gave Kentucky Collectibles plenty of room to construct its set, where objects ranging from a 1950s Gibson ukulele to a Kentucky Long Rifle are appraised by Kentucky experts in firearms, antiques, and more. One of the more astonishing appraisals is of an autograph by the King of Rock ’n’ Roll himself, Elvis Presley. The signature appears in a high-school yearbook brought by a woman who went to school with Elvis, who added, “to a sweet girl.” A local piece of art that proved to be valuable at the appraisal fair is a scene from Louisville’s Cherokee Park by Harvey Joiner, a popular artist in his time and well-known in Louisville. Joiner focused on portraits for much of his early career, and his works include the first five governors of Indiana. He painted many scenes, particularly of beech trees,

in Cherokee park, part of its Olmsted park system designed by the father of landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted. Other intriguing appraisals include a collection of Victorian-era mourning pieces, including jewelry and other items made from the deceased’s hair and several pieces of Wedgewood china. In addition to the on-set appraisals at the museum, the program takes viewers around the state to explore valuable objects, including a trip to Lexington to see a recently discovered silver collection at the University of Kentucky. You’ll also learn about the amazing rocking chairs created by mountain craftsman Chester Cornett at the Kentucky Folk Art Center at Morehead State University. Fans of KET’s documentary The Everlasting Stream will enjoy a bittersweet update of the story presented in that program by author Walt Harrington about his relationship with his father-in-law, Alex Elliott. After Elliott’s recent death, Harrington decided to recondition two of the Model A automobiles Elliott had tinkered with for years. Lexington surgeon Dr. Joseph Zwischenberger, a Model A collector and enthusiast, examines the cars with Harrington and discusses their historical significance and context. Though the cars are not remarkably valuable monetarily, they hold great significance for Harrington and his family as they remember Elliott.

The next appraisal fair date will be May 30, 2015, at the Frazier History Museum. For information about participating, contact KET at (800) 866-0366. Tickets are $100.

On the reserve made famous through the work of legendary conservationist George Adamson (Born Free), they rescue and rehabilitate an orphaned cub named Mugie. They begin training the young lion to be re-released into the wild, but plans go awry in this heart-wrenching documentary.

EXPLORE KENTUCKY

This month, One to One with Bill Goodman is interview-ing the innovative thinkers at the IdeaFestival, held in September in Louisville. Founded in 2000, IdeaFestival is a gathering of an eclectic network of global thinkers and innovators, bound together by an interest in what is impacting and shaping the future of the arts, business, technology, design, science, philosophy, and education. On Nov. 9 and 11, Bill sits down with John Thelin, a University of Kentucky research professor and member of the Educational Policy Studies Department and the author of A History of American Higher Education.

Then on Nov. 16 and 18, Bill’s guests are Morehead State University professors Roger McNeil and Ben

Malphrus, who discuss their work in space and satel-lites.

Then meet Peter Van Buren, a 24-year veteran of the U.S. State Department, who dis-cusses his book, Ghosts of Tom Joad, A Story of the #99 Percent. The book examines the social and economic changes in America between WWII and the decline of the blue-collar middle class in the 1980s. It airs Nov. 23 and 25. One to One with Bill Goodman airs Sundays at 1 pm/noon on KET and Tuesdays at 7:30/6:30 pm on KET2.

After 15 years, KET and Kentucky Life are saying good-bye to its longtime host Dave Shuffett, who retires this month. Since 1999, Shuffett has traveled the state for KET’s Saturday-night staple, where in any week you can experience stories that run the gamut from moonbows and mountain music to the Civil War and sheep shearing. He’s also hosted, with Amy Hess, KET’s Kentucky Collectibles since it premiered in 2012. Shuffett endeared himself to many viewers with his inclusion of his canine pals in the production. Most recently, golden retriever Toby was by his side while Sadie, an adopted border collie, traveled with Shuffett for thousands of miles until she passed away at age 15. Charlie, another golden, was top dog for several seasons. The Greensburg native, who will continue to be on the air as Kentucky Life enters its 20th season, doesn’t plan to remain idle. “I plan to pursue some other writing and media projects and catch up on chores!” he said. “The homestead is fallin’ apart. The fence needs paintin’, the house needs stainin’, the stalls need fixin’ and the horses need ridin’.”

SHORT TAKES

When KET pre-miered Kentucky Collectibles a couple of years ago, little did we know that the program would quickly grow to become KET’s most popular local production.

This year, our Kentucky Collectibles Appraisal Fair was held in July at the Frazier History Museum in Louisville. It was a tremen-dous success with many exciting appraisals that will be seen in the program’s third season beginning this month.

Based on the PBS hit Antiques Roadshow, the series discovers hidden treasures from the Bluegrass State and around the globe. Kentucky Collectibles also reveals interesting stories through history, family traditions, and local lore.

It’s been said that ‘Kentucky is a small town.’ Despite our diverse geography, we’re all connected intricately by traditions and friend-ships spanning our Commonwealth.

We’re Kentuckians — natives and trans-plants alike. KET’s producers, staff, and lead-ers have a deep passion for showcasing the people and pride of our beloved home state, serving you — our friends and neighbors.

KET produces more local programming about what’s good in Kentucky than any other broadcaster. I’m certain we’ll never run out of stories to tell.
