that allowed me to take dogs to work with me. And so it began

I started my forestry career in 1996 but held off getting a dog untilI was married and settled, thinking that was the responsiblething to do. Less than two months into our marriage, Hunter cameinto our lives. Four months later Jewel crashed the party with herunforgettable enthusiasm. For the next 12 years of my life, Inever went in the woods without my Labrador Retrievers, startingwhen they were each only 10 weeks old. I cant even imagine thenumber of miles they put on their paws working full days in thewoods with me, never a day off, even in the winter. I lose mybreath thinking about it. This lifestyle was likely the reason theylived such long lives, 13 and 14+ years respectively.

Now it is Walker and Caseys turn to leave their paw prints in mytruck. Walker, as much the physical machine that Jewel was, andCasey the ever-mindful kind soul that Hunter was; each of themmolding my identity in their own way.

Most foresters I have known, have had a dog working in thewoods with them at some time during their careers. A feeling offreedom prevails when bringing your dog to work that speaks tothe spirit of forestry. There is nothing like having a knucklehead-ed dog bounding aimlessly through the woods while I try to focusat work. Actually it helps my focus and it gives me someone totalk to out there, most foresters would agree. And at the end of theday, when the dog is deliciously tired and covered with treemarking paint I can sleep well knowing I have done my part tomake their lives great, and that they have done their part to saveme from my own sanity.

Now Walker and Casey will join me while I paddle into a newchapter of my forestry life as the Forest Manager at Paul SmithsCollege in the northern Adirondacks. Like I told my dad yearsago, there will always be a dog at my side.

The other day we entered thewoods early in the morning. Thesun was just slanting through thetrees off to the east and castwondrous shadows of an armyof pines marching through themist. Birdsong seemed ampli-fied in the cool air and off in thedistance the sound of rushingwater could be heard. Atticusand I moved easily along. Atthirteen he doesnt like the heatso we dont do much on the hot-ter, more humid days. But onthis morning it was September-like with low humidity.

It was as it always had been, with Atticus leading me alongthe trail, until, at last we cameupon the stream wed heard. Itwould keep us company formore than a half mile and theferns lining the shores were asverdant and strong as any Iveever seen since they were soclose to their source of nourish-ment.

The current swirled over rocksand fallen birch trees, and there

were natural formations cut intothe stone on the bottom of theriver that had been shaped by theages and I watched as the waterleapt and bound and thought ofthe Fairy people in some ofWilliam Butler Yeats old Irishpoems. For he talked about suchscenes and the way a riverwould gather upon itself andthen unspool and create musiconly nature could ring out. There were several times westopped along that way. WhileAtticus is mostly deaf now, hecould still watch, and I couldboth see and hear the racingmagic.

Meanwhile, the sun climbed alittle higher, but still leaned inthrough the forest and peereddown at us and the mists fromthe water rose into the morningair until each microscopic dropwas illuminated into countlesscrystals catching and giving offlight. I could feel the mist on myskin and stepped closer, balanc-ing on a flat rock at the watersedge. Here I closed my eyes andlet the mist give my skin thegentlest of kisses. What was it alittle girl I once knew calledsuch lightness, butterfly kisses?

When we did pull ourselvesfrom the river and moved up thetrail to where it left the water, there were great crisscrossingroots sprawled across the pathlike snakes. Still covered in thenights dew, they were slick andfat and easy to slip on so we tookour time. From the forest weeventually entered into brightsunshine on a ledge with lossfooting. The trail was simply a

sandy rockslide and making ourway up narrow chutes of loosepebbles was a challenge. Andwhile it was still early and thetemperatures were low, I startedto sweat under the sun and thestruggle. From one chute to thenext we made higher ledges andthen higher still. Whenever westopped I offered Atticus water, while drinking some myself. Tothe south lay the ridges of moun-tains, or parts of it anyway, andeverything looked as green as itcould possibly be.

On this specific mountain, thetrail keeps going beyond thesummit without ever reaching it.If you really want to get to thehighest place, you have to bush-whack through stinging pineneedles and whipping branches.Weve probably been up themountain ten times now and notonce have we ever touched thehighest point. Instead we walkjust beyond it, find a shelf ofrock, and sit under the shade ofsome overhanging growth. Butits a funny thing about thismountain. Its not the mountainitself that ever matters to me asmuch as that first mile of wood-land. So instead of sitting look-ing at the views the other morn-ing, we hurried back down thetrail, as if worried the riverwould leave us behind. Whenwe reached the most beautifulswirling pools of fresh river, Itook off my hiking shoes andsocks and waded into it.

Because we cannot hike as muchwith Atticus being so old now, ithas been the summer of wadingin rivers, pools, and lakes. The

author Alice Walker once wroteof how she believed God wouldbe ticked off if you ever walkedby a field of purple without tak-ing the time to appreciate it. Thisyear has become the seasonwhen I think God would beticked off if I didnt wade in everplace I possibly could.Whenever I succumb to tempta-tion, I luxuriate in the way itfeels and how it brings me hometo my childhood, when wadingin rivers was the highlight of aWhite Mountain vacation, something I wouldnt under-stand until decades later.

Atticus doesnt like to get wet,but he is patient as this fool of aman wades and laughs and gig-gles. He typically will sit on ashaded rock and just watch me.At times his ancient eyes getcaught up in the current and heis as mesmerized by it as he hasbeen all those summit viewsthrough the years. He finds hisZen where and when he can andslips into the stillness of peace.

This is the summer where wefinally accepted his physicallimitations, didnt hope formore, and now understand wedont always have to go up, andwhen we do climb, it is a rarity.Still, nature offers gifts in abun-dance if were only willing tooffer ourselves to her.

Just before writing this column,we walked into the backyard andI waded into the Ellis River. When I came back out I sawAtticus watching somethingalong the shore. At first theylooked like hopping spiders, but

they were young toads, justborn, an entire village of them! And if this column is late to myeditor, its because we were cap-tured by their new lives and theastonishment of watching themtake their first leaps while theyseemed to understand theirplaces in this world as soon asthey touched it the dirt by thewaters edge.

'The Last Journey'Today that troubled anchorfinally let him go, replenishinghis spirit with a splendid after-glow.

Sweet enlightened memories ofjoy returned, leaving himunburdened and so very uncon-cerned.

In the corner he discovered hisfishing gear. He picked it upand walked out, not shedding atear.

He's gone fishing on a magicalgolden pond, where the rain-bow trout are jumping all daylong.

He's gone fishing to his person-al retreat, a special place whereall our loved ones wait to meet.

    Hacking/Cyber attacks

In 2000-2001, Richard Clarkwarned that we should be veryconcerned of Cyber Attacks,

No-one heeded his warning. Now that's all we hear about,

hacking government, personal, financial accounts, that we useon the "internet."

Yet we continue to do so.Sending our name, addresses, childrens pictures, social secu-rity, checking savings numbers,

    credit card. etc..

Before we start blaming whoour "hacker experts" are, firstwe should really consider whois "making/building" our com-puters, from the beginning ofthe computer/technology age,Who it was sold to, whowas/and are now building ourcomputers! Now, are there itsybitsy gagets (bugs) that can beopened that tell everythingabout our everyday life. Ourgovernment secrets, our con-gress, ooooh! Now thats scary.

Anything you want to know, goonline, its there, "worldwide."

    Should we be concerned?Absolutely.

Then we complain about gov-ernment in our business, -wellwe give "it to them" -permis-sion. Remember Snowdenooooh! Have you ever givenblood? oooh! Filled out a jobapplication? oooh!

We have no secrets/privacy thatcan't be found on the internet,we give it freely, without ques-tion. But its there... forever. Ourheavens are full of chatter...

Chairs for CushionsThe corner set-up was, quitesimply, no longer comfortable.A round table in a right-anglecorner between twowindows...the pleasure at thelight flooding in during mealshad originally pleased us, aswell as the family historyembedded in the table that Ryanhad first sat around as a smallchild. Nonetheless, the flow ofthe space was becoming prob-lematic. We could either sitsquare to our meals, or square

to each other - but to strive forboth meant an awkward catty-cornered position exaggeratedby the round table shape and thetable legs that were - just barely- persistently in the way.

So the conversation began.Perhaps we could find a cheap, petite, rectangular dinner tablethat would fit the space moresuitably, as well as our prefer-ence for comfortable eye con-tact over dinner meals. Maybewe should move the short futonto the corner and bring the eat-

ing space directly alongside thethree south windows. Theexchange morphed to lamentour many wooden chairs wehad resurrected or inherited, allof which slowly and deter-minedly broke down. Whetherit was due to the dry wood heatof the winter, or the temperatureand humidity fluctuationsthroughout the year, not evenfine handiwork held up forlong.

Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps...weshould simply eliminate chairs. Why not switch to cushions? With personal interests andinclinations to Oriental cul-tures, this idea was not so for-eign as it first sounds. Moreover, we could make use

of a low-sitting table currentlyserving as a shelf within thecrowded conglomeration ofpossessions in our run-downshed.

As the decision was made, ourexcitement for the new layoutgrew. Two old chairs weremoved to other nooks withinthe cabin, relegated to being mystepstools for top-shelf jars andherbs. The third, with onlythree reliable legs, found a spotin the garden. The rug wasshaken out, the floor swept, andthe windowsills dusted - nowthat wed be eye-level with thecorners cobwebs, they wereimpossible to ignore.

    Our first meal, cross-legged

before each other and ourhome-grown, home-cookeddinner seemed exceptional. The change in posture and per-spective added a ritual-esquesanctity to the meal, as if restor-ing a sense of the special in thiseveryday act. Subsequentfeasts, ordinary and average asthey may be, have held this pos-itivity and enjoyment. By plac-ing our table and our meals on anew stage, not only has ourphysical comfort improved, butthe quotidian endeavor of nour-ishing ourselves has gained aunique reverence.

Not only that, but Mica is quitepleased at the possibilities nowopen for successful table-scrapbegging...

    Inspiring Words for You!

Dear Friends, Psalm 150:6 says, Leteverything that breathes sing praises

to the LORD! Praise the LORD! It is this time ofyear beginning in the spring, when I amstanding in the midst of all of God's creation, that I think of this psalm. The beautiful lakes, the trees, flowers, birds, animals all just comealive! At this time of year it is very easy to saythose very words. "LET EVERYTHING THATHAS BREATH PRAISE THE LORD! Read theWord, it will feed your soul.

    God bless you all.

Continuing The article onWindows 10 upgrade by SusanBradley of Windows Secrets;Reserving a Win10 downloadseems pointless

As has been noted in severalWindows Secrets stories, there'sno compelling reason to reserve aWindows 10 download. In fact, there are many good reasons notto. Yes, we can assume thatWin10 will be stable and most ofour key applications will workjust as they do now on Win7 andWin8.1. But we should givethird-party application vendorssome time to tweak their applica-tions. That's especially true ofanti-malware apps. For instance,

a Webroot thread notes that theapp needs to be uninstalled andreinstalled with each Win10build and that will still be thecase with the shipping version ofWin10.

Moreover, the reservation systemis not as simple as you mightexpect. To prepare Win7/8 sys-tems for Win10, Microsoft hasalready released several relatedupdates, some of them withvague descriptions. KB 3035583,for example, adds "capabilitiesfor Windows Update notifica-tions when new updates areavailable to the user." KB2952664 for Win7 SP1 makes"improvements to the current

operating system in order to easethe upgrade experience to the lat-est version of Windows." AndKB 2976978 for Windows 8.1determines "whether compatibili-ty issues may be encounteredwhen the latest Windows operat-ing system is installed."Other Win10-related updates forWin7 and Win 8 include KB3050265 (Win7), KB 3050267(Win8.1), and KB 3068708

If you have no plans to upgradeto Windows 10 soon, none ofthose updates are needed; theycan all be hidden. And if youdecide to upgrade to Win10, say,six months from now, there willundoubtedly be new Win7/8updates to help with that process.

Moreover, the reservation systemisn't playing well with somecomputers, as noted in an MSAnswers thread. The threadincludes various fixes includ-ing Registry hacks. But the bestsolution appears to be a set ofbatch files accessed via aDropbox link. Again, see theaforementioned thread for thedetails.

There are also reports of issueswith the Win10 compatibility-checking tool. It has erroneouslywarned some users that their sys-tems would not support Win10. Ifyou've overclocked your comput-er, the compatibility test won'trun properly. If you've disabledInternet Explorer, you'll need tore-enable it for the Windows 10upgrade. Also, if you're runningan Intel Core i7 processor, thecompatibility system reports thatthe CPU is not supported.

On my Lenovo X1 Carbon lap-top, purchased just this pastDecember, the compatibilitychecker indicated that I'll haveproblems with my Bluetoothdriver (see Figure 1). That's suffi-cient cause to make me delayupgrading the Win8.1 machine at least until new Bluetoothdrivers are built and released.

I hope this will give you someinsight on what to expect whenupgrading to Windows 10. I rec-ommend waiting until Decemberto do the upgrade it will giveMicrosoft more time to imple-ment any patches or fixes and bythen it should be more stable to

    install.

    "Inspiring Healthy Choices For Life"

    BRAKE FOR MOOSE SCOOPS!

On June 18th the NorthernGrafton County RepublicanCommittee gathered at theLittleton Screamin BoarSmokehouse in Littleton for ourmonthly meeting.

We were pleased to hear ourPresident, David Starrsrecounting of events leading upto WW II; particularly notingour countrys isolationist ten-dencies of the early war. Thismessage is very meaningful andvital to us presently where thereseems to be similar attitudesabounding in our nation.

Nitsa Ioannides, field leader forCarly Fiorina, spoke of herwork at Plymouth State. Nitsais a fine example of youngthinking woman who haslooked beyond the give meeverything promotions of thepresent regime. She has facedthe reality of the fact that allfree things are a cost to some-one and that someone may wellbe our future graduates andtheir children. Nitsa spoke fer-vently of her candidate and we

were very impressed with herknowledge and ability. It isinspiring to have a youngwoman such as Nitsa on ourteam.

There was a motion presentedby Nick Di Mayo to have thesecretary look into paid ads inlocal papers for our organiza-

tion and its meetings. Therewas a second to the motion andit passed.

Remember our next meeting isJuly 16th at the Screamin BoarSmokehouse on 40 West Streetin Littleton at 6pm. We hope tosee you there.
