    Happy Independence Day!

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is asking for thepublic's help in tracking wild turkey broods in New Hampshirethis spring and summer. It's easy to take part. If you observegroups of turkeys with young between now through August 31,2015, report your sightings to Fish and Game at its web-basedturkey brood survey athttp://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/surveys/turkeybrood.html.

People enjoy participating, and by doing so, they are helping usmonitor the turkey population," said Kent A. Gustafson, Fish andGame Wildlife Programs Supervisor. We get reports from allover the state through this survey, adding to the important infor-mation biologists gather on turkey productivity, distribution, abundance, turkey brood survival and the timing of nesting andhatching."

Last year (2014), summer brood survey participants reported see-ing 724 broods totaling 4,646 turkeys. The average hatch date in2014 was June 19. Biologists are especially interested in gettingmore reports of turkey broods in the three northernmost NewHampshire counties (Coos, Carroll and Grafton).

The term brood refers to a family group of young turkeysaccompanied by a hen. New Hampshire hens generally begin lay-ing eggs sometime from mid-April to early May and completetheir clutch of about 12 eggs in early to mid-May. Incubation lastsfor 28 days, and most eggs hatch from late May to mid-June. Ifincubating turkey eggs are destroyed or consumed by predators, hens often lay a replacement clutch of eggs that hatch late Junethrough late July. Reports of adult male turkeys are not beingrequested at this time.

Many factors can affect turkey productivity in any given year.Young turkeys are extremely sensitive to cool temperatures andrain, both because it can impact their health, and because these

conditions adversely impact insect populations that are a criticalsource of nutrition for young turkeys. Since spring weather ishighly variable, survival of the annual hatch of wild turkeys isalso highly variable.

Turkey populations depend on a large annual influx of youngturkeys to sustain themselves over time, so the number of youngturkeys that survive to be recruited into the fall population is ofgreat interest to turkey managers. A large sample of turkey broodobservations collected throughout the summer can provide turkeymanagers with insight into the size of the graduating class ofturkeys that will become adults.

Hosted by the PemigewassetValley Chapter, Daughters ofthe American Revolution, Dougand Linda Wood will provide ademonstration and descriptionof American attire and personalweapons of the RevolutionaryWar period.

Mr. Wood will portray a mem-ber of the Continental Rangerunit under the command ofGeneral John Stark during theAmerican Revolution (1775 -1783).

    Ranger units were small, cohe-

sive bodies of rough and fierce-ly independent men whodepended upon each other forsurvival in the harshest of envi-ronments.

They rightfully consideredthemselves unique and not sub-ject to the same strictures asmuch of the Army.

The Rangers of the French andIndian War and AmericanRevolution are the forebears oftoday's Ranger and SpecialForces units.

Doug Wood is past president ofthe NH Sons of the AmericanRevolution and is wife, Linda,is an active member ofDaughters of the AmericanRevolution. Together, they areactive participants in AmericanRevolution re-enactment activi-

Incessantly scouring the uni-verse (and my back yard) for theweird, the wacky, and thethoughtful so you dont have to.

I love those quizzes onFacebook! I love them so muchthat I created a series of my own.The first one: Can I guess yourfavorite subject in school withonly one question? Ready? Whatwas your favorite subject inschool? Other such quizzes Ideveloped can tell where youwere born, your age, and favoritefood.

I was reading a list of the 25 mostnotorious serial killers. ABrazilian serial killer was arrest-ed in 1973, but not convicteduntil 2003. Starting at the age of14, he murdered at least 71 peo-ple and was sentenced to 128years in prison. However, hekilled 47 additional people inprison and his sentence is now400 years long. Maybe we arebetter off without some people....

I am getting a bit bothered bypeople who are so into politicsand still supporting the seeming-ly never-ending clown-busparade of candidates. They arevirtually all a part of a brokensystem. For how many yearshave we heard things like smallergovernment, transparency, work-ing for the people, bring jobshome, etc. Whats really sad iswe have to have sites like

www.factcheck.org. Most ofthem lie like rugs!

Whenever I work (or at least gointo work), I have been buying alarge morning coffee atMickeyDs for $1.00 (I likeDunks, but its twice the price).Anyhow, I was going to switch toiced, but I saw it was $2.39. Whyis iced coffee so much moreexpensive? Bueller? Bueller?

(Warning: Gross generalizationand mini-rant coming!) I haveconcluded one of the biggest con-tributors to the problems today isthe fact people just dont careabout anyone but themselves. Ifwhat they say or do offendssomeone else, too bad its nottheir problem. One thing Ilearned while teaching in theclassroom is to cater (so to speak)to the people most likely to findsomething offensive. Even some-thing innocently uttered thatmight be ever-so-slightly offen-sive to one person could (andsometimes did) result in a call tothe school and a call for me to gothe principals office. When I seesome of the things people post onFacebook, it is obvious they giveno thought to anyone elses sensi-bilities. On the plus side, we dolearn something about the char-acter of the poster. (Trust me, Iwent through a speak-to-shockphase, but I grew up and while Imay still may be inappropriate, Ido so with caution and to a limit-

    ed audience.)

I recently officiated two wed-dings in one day. I rarely doublebook, but sometimes.... On10/10/10, I actually did three, andon 11/11/11, I did another double, but nothing for 12/12/12 (I cantimagine why not).

Pretty much anyone who had mein class remembers my mantra:You dont have to like every-body, but you have to get along. What happened in Charleston, S.C. is beyond belief (yet not at allsurprising) and purely wrong. Itshould be that simple, but its not.If you cant see his act as horrify-ing and unacceptable, you arestill part of the problem. Youdont have to like everybody, butyou have to get along.

Anyone else wonder about rela-tionships that dont make it andthen suddenly after the breakupone party (or both) are in a rela-tionship with someone else...quickly.

So A-Rod (is that how itsspelled?) gets his milestone3,000th hit, a homerun, and a guyin the stands gets the ball. Ofcourse, hell probably want apretty penny to give it back (hewas allegedly already offeredover $300,000 for it). And, ofcourse, the guy has over 8,000other balls hes collected(caught).

Gay Pride, Black Pride, MexicanPride, Asian Pride, White Pride, etc. I think we need to get back tobasics, define, and supportAmerican Pride that provides apretty big umbrella. We have lostour identity!

If you think no one cares aboutyou, just get closer and closer toa deadline without submittingyour column....

In light of the recent shooting inthe South, one chain has decidedto no longer sell Confederate-themed merchandise. Accordingto a company spokesman atWalmart, We never want tooffend anyone with the productsthat we offer. Oh, okay. So whatif I am majorly offended with theamount of Made in China mer-chandise.

A few possibly true facts sent

along to me: (1) The Earth gets100 tons heavier every day due tofalling space dust. (2) Due toearths gravity it is impossible formountains to be higher than15,000 meters (but doesnt thespace dust accumulate?). (3) yourtongue is the only muscle in yourbody that is attached at only oneend (lets just say Im thinking ofanother possibility). (4) Our gub-mint at work: The Swine Flu vac-cine in 1976 caused more deathand illness than the disease it wasintended to prevent. In the first half of the nineteenthcentury some of the worldsgreatest landscape painters cameto the White Mountains. Someof them would be the nucleus ofthe Hudson River School ofpainters and none was more sig-nificant than New York-basedThomas Cole. He was one of thefirst who saw these great peaksas a place to retreat to where anever-changing world couldntreach as easily and saw the needto protect it.

One of my favorite Cole quotesstates Many a mountain streamand rock has its legend, worthyof the poets pen or the painterspencil.

During the first few years of ourhiking up here, starting a decadeago, I wouldnt have appreciatedColes words as much. I wasmore intent on getting to the topof each peak to celebrate theview, but also our accomplish-ment. You could say my appreci-ation for this region was tar-

nished by my ego that wanted togo faster, farther, and do more, more, more.

But then something happenedand things changed. I somehowcame to the conclusion duringall my hurry to collect personalachievement that Id lost touchwith how much I was missingalong the way to prove howstrong and fast and accom-plished I was. During our firstvisits up here, when Atticus ledme along twisting paths andacross rocky streams, there wasa buzz of excitement wheneverwe entered the woods. Thats allit took, to leave one world andenter another. There was aninnocence found along the trails.Oh, how I loved leaving a busierMassachusetts life behind to getlost in the woods. It almostfelt like I was playing hooky. Asthe world I knew rushed everonward back home, Atticus and Iwere sitting by streams, enjoy-ing the breeze and the shade ofthe forest, and the way the sunglistened through the greencanopy to create the illusion ofdiamonds and jewels in theflowing water.

Back in Newburyport, back run-ning my newspaper after a fewdays up here, Id often mentallyreturn to those little breaks bythe streams, or those momentswhen Id stop pushing throughthe woods and just breathe in theclean air as the trees toweredaround us and I felt small butalso like I belonged as MotherNature wrapped her arms aroundme.

For the past seven years Iverejected the mania I was caughtup in and decided to enjoy themountains more for what theymeant to me personally, insteadof trying to keep up with otherswho were also into achievingsomething. And as soon as I letgo of the ego in my hiking, Ilearned to appreciate each walkin the woods, whether it wastwenty minutes or twenty miles.

Now, here we are several yearslater and Atticus is thirteen. Hesstill quite active, but hes retiredfrom his hiking days, for themost part. There are still morn-ings when the air is cool andfresh and inviting when hedecides he still wants to go up,and so we do. But I never expectit anymore. This has allowed meto fully appreciate what ThomasCole said about many a moun-tain stream or rock

These days I find myself mar-veling at what nature has provid-ed. Now, instead of hurrying tothe next checkpoint, we can sitfor an hour in a woodsy valleywatching red squirrels and theirtwitching tails, listening to theindustrious woodpeckers (whopay no attention to us whatsoev-er), holding the tiniest toad inthe palm of my hand for closerstudy, or simply noticing theleaves twist and dance in thewind.

Its funny, isnt it? No matterhow much we dream of summerin the coldest days of the winter, when it arrives there is never adisappointment. Its always asgood as we imagined it. The sea-

sons dont disappoint. Naturenever fails to live up to its prom-ise. Unlike the world we are cre-ating, things are come betterthan advertised in the naturalworld. Thats the way it waswith my Newburyport day-dreams, too. No matter how per-fect I saw things to be up here, the reality exceeded the fantasy.

This morning a young bear wasbusying himself with somethingunder a tree. He had no idea wewere within twenty feet of himwatching his rump twist and turnwhile he head was down belowat the trunk. When he finallysensed us, he turned around witha look of shock and started torun off. Perhaps it was becauseAtticus and I were sitting, andnot chasing him, or somethingelse altogether, but after fivequick steps, the bear looked overhis shoulder and stopped aswell. He watched us, alwaysready to run, but he never did.And we sat taking him in, takingin everything around him. Hewould eventually move on, butat no hurry and as he lingered,we couldnt get enough of him.

These are the things I never didsee before. I think wed be mov-ing so quickly forward that theanimals stayed hidden becauseof all of our noise and rambunc-tiousness.

The other day I heard from awoman who was new to hiking. She wanted to know if I had anyadvice for a novice. I told her todo her own thing and not getcaught up in lists or what every-one else is doing. Do what

makes you happy. Take the giftsthe mountains are offering youspecifically and appreciatethem. Then I shared theThomas Cole quote with her.

The mountaintops are verygrand, but the rocks and streamsalong the way, they are prettyspecial too.

School Choice, a Contract andThe Warren School Board

Two years ago the attendance atthe yearly Warren Town MeetingDay was unprecedented: all agesshowed up to participate in a dis-cussion on school choice and thebenefits it would have for ourchildren and our town. Our townhad just had an exodus of fami-lies with high school aged chil-dren due to a long term contractthat placed them at theWoodsville High SchoolThe con-tract had expired, and most of thepeople at the meeting did notwant to have another six year

contract with the HaverhillCooperative School District. Our school board had an ideathat people wanted to havechoice, but made no effort toinclude representatives fromeither Plymouth Regional HighSchool and Plymouth Elementaryor Rivendell Academy at thatmeeting. Nor had they made anyeffort to contact these schools tohave an idea of tuitions prior toour town vote. Two years agoyoung adult and senior residentsof the Town of Warren, NH votedvery strongly to oppose the con-tract and to have school choice.

At this point the Warren SchoolBoard invited these schools toaddress parents, and interesting-ly enough, the graduates from thesixth grade class of 2013 electedto go to Rivendell Academy andPlymouth Elementary. And therewere families whose childrenwere unhappy at Woodsville andHaverhill and they decided totransfer their children toPlymouth Regional High Schooland Rivendell Academy, schoolsthat were safe environments, more compatible to their chil-drens learning style and closerto their place of work. And there

were families who were veryhappy with Haverhill andWoodsville.

The financing of this endeavorwould not have hurt our residentsat the time had the WarrenSchool Board not returned tuitionmoney to everyone when we hada mass exodus of families. Hadthey held on to those funds wewould have had a much betteridea of what our taxes couldaccomplish to support all taxpayers (families in Warren dopay taxes, but consistently thereare speakers at School Board

Meetings who imply they dont).Instead, after distributing a hugerebate of taxes, our School Boarddecided to add the addition to theWarren Village School, which inaddition to the new contracts, created a tax burden for every-one, families and seniors. Our School Board acted in goodfaith: moving our seventh andeighth grades has been a goodidea for saving tuition money andbusing fees. And now that thebuilding is built, our taxes are nolonger escalated as they were ayear ago.

At town meeting this past March,a small representation of thetown of Warren voted to have ourschool board contract with anadequate school for our highschool students and have familiespay the difference between thecontracted tuition cost and thetuition of their school of choice. The school board asked eachschool for what they would offer, and landed with The HaverhillCooperative District. Our schoolboard did not tell eitherPlymouth or Rivendell Academyabout the offer made byHaverhill, nor did they realizethat Rivendell had alreadyplanned the busing into theirbudget: it was free. In a letterdated June 3, 2015, RivendellAcademy Principal KeriGelenian announced to familiesof Warren whose children attendRivendell Academy that the RISDSchool Board voted on June 2,2015 to make the NewHampshire Tuition $13,500,inclusive of busing for Warren. This decision was made in con-sideration of our students andour families desire for schoolchoice. This tuition rate is forNew Hampshire residents whochoose to send their children toRivendell: it goes beyond thetown of Warren.

Our family chose Rivendellbased on our sons impression ofthe school during his visit therein the spring of 2013: he lovedthe teachers and the atmosphereof learning. Rivendell has amaz-ing sports teams, and wonderfuldrama, art and music depart-ments. Educationally Rivendellencourages team work and inde-pendent thinking in all of theiracademic subjects. Every stu-dent is encouraged to shine.Drivers Ed is part of the curricu-lum: there is no fee. .

Students can take courses atDartmouth and Vermont StateCollege, and online AP classes. The departments of French andSpanish have overseas exchangeprograms that are inclusive of allstudents wishing to participate, and all students work to earn themoney to go. And Rivendell is aninterstate school: they complywith all laws in Vermont and inNew Hampshire to meet theestablished school standards. They are not required to complywith New Hampshire educationcode, but because of their affilia-tion with Vermont, receive ahigher rate of state support.

    A Place to Grow

This was one of those morningswhere I wished the weather thataccompanied me on my walkoff the property more closelymirrored the weather radiosmorning prediction. Thesescattered showers felt moreakin to a heavy downpour. Theworn shell of my used andabused rain jacket quicklyreminded me of its diminishingprotection. I hurriedly tuckedinto my car, turned the wiperson high, and hoped my carwouldnt be waylaid by themud between me and the townroad.

Working in the rain is rarelysomething I get excited about, and today was no exception. However, I wasnt begrudgingthe walk out, sure that theseverity of the rain would haveme quickly back at home.

Navigating between paid workand life work on the homesteadis an ongoing challenge for bothRyan and I, and rainy days arean easy means of resetting thedays priorities. Staying withinour sphere or engaging in theouter world are the twooptions offering constant reflec-tion, consideration, evaluation, and experimentation within therhythm of our lifestyle. Thedesire to be at home, to nurture

ourselves by stewarding ourniche in the local landscape, and to engage deep personalhappiness by choosing simplic-ity of needs over complexity ofoptions are physical and emo-tional aspects ever present inthe unfolding of our day-to-daydetails. The shoulds andoughts, not to mention the real-ity of financial and interperson-al needs easily pull us fromhome; the root energy, sensibil-ity, and natural beauty of ourhomestead continually pulls usback.

Today, sensing my imminentreturn, the departure was madeeasy (except for the penetratingrain). Preferring the personalover other options, I was driv-ing a mere three miles to cancelface-to-face with my morningclient. After some brief conver-sation and chuckles of under-standing, I once again tuckedinto my car, pulled my drippinghood from around my face, andnavigated the rivulets and rutsof yet another dirt road.

My afternoon client was quitelocal as well and an apparenteasing of the downpour con-vinced me to turn in their direc-tion. They were away, andwouldnt mind if I altered myschedule. Garden fork in hand, and bucket by my side, it wasntlong before the rumble of thun-

der joined pails of rain fallingfrom the grey sky. A flash oflightning and I was packing upmy tools. If the rain subsided,I would try again this after-noon.

Returning home, walking intoour clearing, is like a deepbreath of mountain air. The

morning quickly passedbetween chapters of a book, aletter to a friend, sweeping, andwatering the greenhouse. Indoing the latter, I was pleased tonote the many cucumbersemerging from the flowers ofthe past week. It was also clearthat the time for string trellisingthem was here. I retrieved my

stash of twine and grabbedsome excess limb wood forstakes. With care I anchoredthe strong lines from ground toceiling, and twined the cucum-bers on to this simple support.

Like me, they now had a placeto grow.

Twogroups of Rebel walkers willlog 20 miles from Rochester and16 miles from Hampton, symbol-izing the importance of this issuein the 2016 presidential race. The walks will converge onPortsmouth with a public decla-ration of independence from spe-cial interests and a demand thatevery presidential candidatecommit to ending corruption onday one.

The Rochester route will be ledby NH Rebellion founderLawrence Lessig and will leavefrom Rochester Commons. It willmake stops at the Dover FriendsMeeting House and Old GeneralSullivan Pedestrian Bridge alongthe 20-mile route to PrescottPark. The Hampton route willleave from Hampton Beach, stopping at Rye Harbor StatePark before meeting up with the

Rochester route at Prescott Parkat approximately 4:30.

This will be the eighth large-scale walk of the NH Rebellionsince 2014, and the second heldon Independence Day weekend.Last year, we wanted to discov-er whether New Hampshire citi-zens of all stripes would rally tothis issue, and they did. We want-ed to see if we could change thedialogue, and we did, says NHRebellion Director Jeff McLean. This year we have the support,we have the momentum, andwere making the declaration thatAmerica must be free from thecorrupting influence of money inpolitics. NH Rebellion is part ofOpen Democracy, the NH non-partisan organization dedicatedto transparent and accountablegovernance.

Inspiring Words for You!Dear Friends, Do you ever wonder if Godis there? If He hears your prayers? If He

sees you in the midst of the millions of people onthe planet? Does He even know you exist? Theanswer is YES! Joshua 1:9 Have I not commandedyou? Be strong and courageous. Do not beterrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORDyour God will be with you wherever you go."Romans 8:2839 And we know that in all thingsGod works for the good of those who love him,who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to beconformed to the image of his Son, that he mightbe the first born among many brothers andsisters. And those he predestined, he also called;those he called, he also justified; those hejustified, he also glorified. Read the Bible. Godbless you.

I have been receiving calls fromcustomers who run Windows 7,Windows 8 and 8.1 about theWindows Logo on the bottomright side of the system tray. The logo says get windows 10,I have been asked if it is legiti-mate, and yes it is. On or aboutJuly 29, 2015 Microsoft willmake available a free upgradeto windows 10 for all comput-ers running Windows 7,

Windows 8 and 8.1. When youclick on the logo it asks you ifyou want to reserve your copyof Windows 10. You will have1 year from the date of releaseto install your free upgrade afterthe one year you will have topay for the upgrade, price hasnot been released as of thiswriting. I recommend if you dowant to install the upgrade wait

    until 6 months from the releasedate say around December orJanuary to install the upgradeby then most of the bugs shouldbe fixed in the operating sys-tem. Here is more informationabout the Windows 10 upgradefrom Windows Secrets bySusan Bradley;

The mighty Microsoft market-ing system is taking an entirelynew approach to introducingthe next Windows. Here are thefacts, not the hype

By now, most Windows usersknow that Microsoft has insti-tuted a reservation system fordownloading Windows 10,once it formally starts shippingthis July 29. Getting Windowsusers to reserve a place at theWin10 launch table is a novelconcept as was the TechnicalPreview program that's been inplace for the past few months.Although there are some goodaspects to the reservation sys-tem, it also has problems and issimply unnecessary.

As you probably know by now,Windows 10 will be a freeupgrade for all qualifiedWindows systems i.e., most-ly personal and "genuine" Win7and Win8.1 machines for afull year after its July 29release. That's not exactly ashort window for decidingwhether you want the freeupgrade. (Reportedly, if youmiss that one-year window, you'll have to pay for the OS.And if you haven't updatedfrom Win8 to 8.1, a necessaryrequirement for Win10, you'reway overdue to do so.)

Contrary to some rumors, therewill not be any sort of subscrip-tion fee after you upgrade.Microsoft will send freeupdates for the life of the OS.Possibly the one useful aspectof the Win10 reservation sys-tem is that it runs a check ofyour system to see whether it's

ready for the new OS. The "GetWindows 10" application thatsuddenly appeared on manyWindows systems earlier thismonth includes a "Check myPC" option. As long as you'vekept up on patches in WindowsUpdate, updating to Win10should be relatively uncompli-cated for most current PCs.There are numerous other, moreminor changes (detailed in theWin10 Specifications page). For example, during theupgrade process, your anti-mal-ware app will in theory beuninstalled and later reinstalledwith the latest version. (It'sunknown what AV apps thiswill work for.) The "Check myPC" function will also testwhether third-party apps arecompatible with Win10.

Upgrading to Win10 willremove a couple of Windowsfeatures you might rely on. Forexample, as noted inMicrosoft's Win10 FAQ,Windows Media Center willdisappear. In its place, we'll geta DVD-playback app so we cancontinue watching DVD-basedmovies on our notebooks. Alsogone are Windows 7 gadgets, ostensibly replaced by the smalluniversal-app tiles in Win10'snew start menu. In truth, the ossof gadgets is a non-issue; asnoted in an MS post, theseapplets are not secure andhaven't been for some time.

Possibly the most importantchallenge for many Windowsusers will be the comingchanges to Windows Update. The specifics are still somewhatvague, but on the Win10 speci-fications page, Microsoft states:

"Windows 10 Home users willhave updates from WindowsUpdate automatically avail-able."

Windows 10 Pro and Windows10 Enterprise users will be ableto delay updates, using what

Microsoft calls a "Currentbranch" or a "Long-term servic-ing branch." For the consumerversions of Win10, users will beable to delay update installsonly by choosing when toreboot their systems general-ly for a few days at most. Therewill be no option to hideupdates, as we currently can inall versions of Win7 and Win8.Again, the specifics are still tocome. But as I understand it,any delay installing updateswill apply only to nonsecurityfixes that we now see as"optional." Moreover, securitypatches may be automaticallydeployed at any time, not juston Patch Tuesday. As someone who has watchedthe evolution of Windowspatching over the years, I canwell remember where we start-ed patches appearing anyday of the week. (We also hadto know exactly which patchneeded to be installed beforeanother patch.) Patch Tuesdaywas initiated to bring some pre-dictability to updating, but theInternet and cloud services areeffectively driving us back tocontinuous patching at leastfor security updates.

Though it's clear we need fasterand better updating, there's alsoconcern that Microsoft is stillsending out problematic patch-es. We can only hope thatMicrosoft rises to the occasionand fixes its patch-quality prob-lems. Even at that, if the abilityto defer updates is limited, enterprises will be slow todeploy Windows 10.

I hope that clears some of thequestions you may have, I willcontinue in the next articleabout what your computerrequires to download the freeupgrade, any question pleasecall me at (603)747-2201 [email protected] or on theweb www.paigecomputerser-vices.com. Have a safe week.
