Leave Fawns And Other YoungWildlife Alone____________________________

The best chance a young wildanimal has to survive is in itsnatural environment under thecare of its mother.

In the coming weeks, deer willbegin giving birth around thestate. The majority of deerfawns are born in NewHampshire in May and June.Each spring, many NewHampshire residents see youngfawns by themselves and fearthe worst. Has the mother died?Has she abandoned her fawn?The answer in most cases isNO. The doe is likely not faroff, waiting to return to feed her

newborn fawn.

Adult deer can be easily detect-ed by predators due to theirscent and large size. Because ofthis, does will spend long peri-ods of time away from theirfawns to disassociate their scentfrom the fawn and keep themsafe from predators. For thefirst month of life, the doe willonly visit the fawn a few timesa day to nurse quickly beforeleaving again, although usuallynot going too far.

Unfortunately, well-inten-tioned, but misguided, individ-uals see fawns alone, assumethey are abandoned, and takethem in to "help" them. Most ofthe time they are removing thefawn from the care of its moth-er, who was waiting to return.The best chance a young wildanimal has to survive is in itsnatural environment under thecare of its mother. Following the recent attack onthe free speech cartoonists inTexas, a couple of questions:(1) the authorities have beenscrutinizing and tracking thealleged perps for years, yet theywere still able to attack. Why?Kind of like the guy who tookthe small gyrocopter and landedin front of the capitol. He said itwas going to happen, and it did.

As of this writing, all I can sayis that I thought gas prices weresupposed to go DOWN thissummer.... So far they are up atleast 30 cents a gallon.

I have concluded there are defi-nitely things that do not belongon Facebook! That last com-ment made me think of a joke Ilove: Whats the differencebetween males and savingsbonds? Give up? Eventually the

savings bonds mature... budda-boom. (Many of the girls arentmuch better. Free speech? Ofcourse. Class... whats that?

A saying (mantra) of the 60s Itried (and still try) to live bywas, The authority of my fiststops just before the tip of yournose. I am thinking we shouldbring the saying back andspread the words!

I was pretty impressed withmyself until I learned I ambehind the curve (whatever thatmeans). A new TV category Ithought should be recognizedand used: newsertainment!Then I looked it up and found itwas already in the UrbanDictionary... from 2004! Thedefinition then (and now): n.Mindless information about anentertainer or show that is por-trayed as news. As I was wait-ing for a doctors appointment,I browsed through a couple ofPeople magazines. I rest mycase.

So, people on FB have beenposting pictures of their kids alldressed up for their first semi-formal dance. Apparently todayto some that means wearingclean jeans....

I finally admitted I need help,so I joined a support group forprocrastinators. We stillhavent met yet!

I find myself getting emotionalwatching some of the onlinevideos of people doing the rightthing, military reunions, and thelike. In contrast, the news usu-ally shows the other side ofthings. Although there are many

shades of gray (no pun intend-ed), it could be argued if youare not part of the solution, youare part of the problem.Remember, The only thingnecessary for the triumph ofevil is for good men to do noth-ing. Edmund Burke. Be partof the solution not the problem!

Long ago I stopped countingthe number of mountainsAtticus and I climbed. Istopped keeping records ofdate, distance, elevation gain,and peak name. I suppose thismight fly in the face of reasonfor many peakbaggers, butheres the thing after threeintense years of making asmany summits as we could,sometimes close to twice ineach of the four seasons, I cameto the conclusion I didnt likebeing a peakbagger. It all felttoo much like work, especiallyfor something that was sup-posed to be about enjoyment.

So while theres been a greatboom in completing lists of allkinds, I retired from the mad-ness of it all. We never did col-lect patches or scrolls from theAppalachian Mountain Club,although I must admit, they arevery attractive (especially thosescrolls). What we did wassomewhat revolutionary for thetime, I guess. For the past sixyears weve only hiked what

weve wanted to. Imagine that?

To top it off, we started hikingmany of the less glamorousmountains, no matter theheight. I suppose the onlypatch wed qualify for thesedays is the best summits to napon patch. Perhaps I shouldmake one of those up, since itseems more and more peopleare creating patches for this andthat in the hiking world.

I dont condemn anyone forhow they want to hike, but I docondemn myself for followingeveryone else for those firstthree years.

Now that Atticus is thirteen,and slowing down a great deal,I dont imagine hell stand ontop of another four thousand-footer, even though we continueto get out and about. But these

days waterfall and pond andriver sitting has replaced sum-mit sitting for us. We linger foran hour at a time at the prettiestbrooks and watch the springrunoff roll by as the ferns andwildflowers pop up to greetanother year of warmer weath-er.

But theres been something elseweve been doing. Werereturning to some of ourfavorite trailheads and walkingonly the first mile or so in andthen walking out again. Its likesaying hello to old friends. Wedo it mostly during the week,just as weve mostly hiked dur-ing the week these past sevenyears since trails are lesscrowded.

When someone asked merecently how many mountainsAtticus and I have climbed, I

couldnt tell them. Theypressed me and I guesstimated acouple of thousand but Im real-ly not sure. But here is some-thing I am certain about. AsAtticus continues to age I con-sider us blessed that he ishealthy and can still enjoy awalk in the rustic woods amongthe moss and birds and lime andmint greens of the season.

I have gone from a Type-Ahiker, to a who-knows-what-kind of hiker I am. Ill admitthat Im liking it. Treasuresabound in the woods and whenwe can reach a viewpoint of anyelevation gain whatsoever,thats all the better. But to sit insolitude with a mountain pondor a waterfall with Atticus is notsuch a bad thing. I can think ofhundreds of people whodrather be where we are in natureon any given weekday after-

noon instead of at their desks orsales counter.

I have come to believe that partof aging gracefully, as Atticus iscurrently doing, is to appreciatewhat we have instead of whatwe dont. And what we have isthis wondrous National Forestall around us, and that is a grandthing.

The First BlockIts not very often that vehiclesbesides our own bump downthe dirt way towards our prop-erty. Much of the year its noteven possible for us to do so.But occasionally passersbylooking to swim in the river, ora local hunter looking for rabbitor turkey, will park their vehi-cles by the cemetery and walkin pursuit of their respectiveinterests.

This past weekend, however,saw a very different sight. Forperhaps the first time ever a 12-wheeled truck with extendedflat bed and a hydraulic cranerumbled over the rocks, roots,and potholes to our propertyline. The remarkably agreeableand easy-going driver didnthesitate as I pointed to thegrassy stretch just inside the

property boundary and asked ifhe could drop the goods there.He simply nodded, smiled,pulled forward until the groundbecame too soft for such aheavy truck to travel, and pro-ceeded to engage the cranesforklift.

Ryan and I were having cinderblocks delivered. 250 of them.This was the next step in mak-ing our root cellar dreams areality. We figured it was worththe delivery fee to save the wearand tear that would otherwiseinevitably be wreaked onRyans truck. Watching thecrane lift, position, and gentlyplace three pallets worth ofblocks neatly along the wood-line with no more effort thanthe push of a few buttons defi-nitely reiterated our choice.

Besides, our real work would

just now be beginning. To getfrom our property line to ourhome requires walking theshaded path that Ryan has builtthrough the woods, just abovethe river. Its a lovely experi-ence that reiterates the joy andcomfort of returning home eachday.

But

But those cinder blocks, eachone of them, will have to sharein that same joy and comfort ofa wooded walk home. Theresno way to get them to the gianthole that will become a cellarwithout carrying, or wheelbar-rowing, each one.

So, yesterday, I began a newroutine. With each returnhome, I carry a block; yesterdaywas the first one. Today, thesecond.

As the delivery truck turnedaround and pulled out that day -a feat of driving considering thetruck was longer than our turn-around is wide - the driverasked, So, is there actuallyhouse out there? I chuckledand said, Oh yes, a cabin webuilt by hand, were all off-gridand human-powered. He, too,chuckled and responded, Well,how bout that. Good luck.

Which I accepted quite willing-ly. This project is just begin-ning.

We had the opportunity to visitthe site of the Mountain MudRun this week. Boy oh boy,things have changed this year.Mountain Mud Run began asCliff Edge Run in August of2013 the name changed toMountain Mud Run in 2014.Mountain Mud Run occupies63.85 acres in Warren, NH, justoff Route 25C and is home tothe bi-annual event consistingof Mud Bog, Rock Crawl andBounty Hill competitions. Thefirst event this year will takeplace on May 30, 2015.

Since last year, the mud venuehas undergone major changes.The side hill was clear cut and 2new Mud truck parking lotshave been built. Spectator seat-ing areas have been built sospectators can sit in what we are

being called, skyboxes or sittrack side up close and person-al. The mud venue isnt all thathas changed, as the Rock Crawl

venue also has taken on a newlook from increasing spectatorareas 10 fold, to adding a stockclass crawl and beefing up themodified and unlimited crawls

so that the competitors will beon the courses longer and the

thrills will be awesome.

Mountain Mud Run hasntstopped there, they have addednew camping sites and theyhave built a permanent stagethat will be played on for thefirst time by the Conniption Fits4-7 PM on May 30, 2015.

There are several new trails thatyou can run your own four-wheel drive rigs and dont missthe second event on September12 & 13, 2015.

Mountain Mud Run is open allyear and will rent their venueanytime for small or largegroups. Consider them your 4-wheeling headquarters. Theyhave moved mountains for you.Runninit Hard MountainMud Run!

Karolyn Kinane presents a live-ly, interactive crash course in themedieval English language,specifically the poetry ofChaucers The CanterburyTales. Participants will have theopportunity to read and recitemedieval poetry aloud in a fun,relaxed environment. The pro-gram includes a brief, illustratedhistorical overview of the eventsthat sparked linguistic transi-tions from the Anglo-Saxon andAnglo-Norman eras to theMiddle English era, includingthe Norman Invasion, the BlackDeath, and the invention of theprinting press. Kinane closes byexploring how these medievalevents are still embedded in theEnglish we speak today and howmodern inventions and eventscontinue to shape language.

Sugar Hills Lupine Market willbe held rain or shine on Saturdayand Sunday, June 6-7. The mar-ket will stretch between theSugar Hill Meetinghouse, theCarolina Crapo MemorialBuilding and the Sugar HillHistorical Museum. There willbe plenty of parking behind theMeetinghouse. The scheduleincludes seminars, workshops,artisan demonstrations and con-certs; all are free admission. Themarket is open from 10 am to 4pm.

rapher, George Mitchell of GMFotography will share photogra-phy tips. You can also take a stepback in photographic historythrough Rev. Samuel Nickersonsphotos from the 1870s through1930 on display at the Sugar HillHistorical Museum. And for a bitmore northern New Hampshirehistory, Sara Boothman Glineswill share stories of growing upin the Boothman family. Herfamily of farmers, woodsmen,homemakers, hotel proprietors,carpenters, and photographerswere shaped by NewHampshires economic growth.

Story telling seems to be a themeas at 11:30 am on Saturday,Charles E. Barry will share fromhis recent book, Behind Badge32, True Stores of a NHConservation Officer. Wildlifeencounters, mountain rescues,and nighttime stakeouts forpoachers were part of his 20 plusyears with NHs Fish and GameDepartment. A book-signing willfollow this session. At 1 pm,Storyteller and author, RebeccaRule, brings us stories of NHCharacter and NH Characters.From Fodd Boodys tall motherto what Hugh Fifield said at townmeeting that brought down thehouse, these are our stories mostly funny and our identityas well. For over twenty years,Rebecca Rule has been collectingstories of New England. Someare even true. Shell share her

favorites and invite the audienceto contribute stories, too, shouldthe spirit of the Old Man of theMountain move them. A book-signing will follow this session,too.

Our last session on Saturday at 3pm, Nigel Manley of The RocksEstates talks about our localwildlife and how they survive inNew Hampshire, along with afew of their quirky traits. Howmuch do you know about porcu-pines? Also take the time to visitThe Sugar Hill Sampler for ahorse-drawn wagon ride in thelupine fields. At 2:30 pm on bothSaturday and Sunday, drive up tothe refurbished Inn at Sunset Hillfor a tour and light refreshments.

The Sugar Hill market wouldntbe complete without music. OnSaturday, Joseph Hansalik willentertain us with his wide reper-toire of music on keyboard. On

Sunday, hell move to theMeetinghouses grand piano foranother concert. And on Sundayat 1 pm, The Vermont FiddleOrchestra will play toe-tappingmusic. This community orches-tra spans several generations,from beginning level players toprofessional soloists playingsimultaneously while providingentertainment, education, andpreserving the traditional fid-dling of New England. They aremore than just fiddles. Youllfind cellos, guitars, mandolins,flutes, accordions, and otherinstruments in the orchestra, too.The VFO wants the audience andthe musicians to have fun at theirconcerts.
