New Hampshires 2014 mooseseason wrapped up on Sunday,October 26. While hunters haveuntil close of business today toregister their moose at N.H.Fish and Game headquarters or regional offices, preliminaryfigures show that 91 hunterssucceeded in taking their mooseduring the 9-day season. With atotal of 127 permits issued, thisrepresents a statewide success

rate of 72%. The breakdown for the harvest this year was 57bulls (63%) and 34 cows(37%). Final season results willbe available upon completion of registration data entry andanalysis.

Were pleased with this suc-cess rate, said Kristine Rines,Fish and Games longtimemoose biologist. The percent-age has been down a bit the lasttwo years, so this is good.

Around the state this year, pre-iminary numbers show moose

hunters having an 81% successrate in the Connecticut LakesRegion; 79% in the NorthRegion; 64% in the WhiteMountain Region; 68% in theCentral Region; 80% in theSouthwest Region; and 40% in

    the Southeast Region.

Participants reported on someinteresting adventures as they

brought their harvested moosein to biologists at regionalcheck stations. At age 70,Dwight Poland Sr. of Antrimhas entered every year since themoose hunt lottery began andfinally won a permit this year.Hunting with his nephew Mark

Poland of Hillsboro, he shot a540-pound cow on Saturday. He and Mark had a long, diffi-cult drag bringing the mooseout from a remote location. When they brought the cow intothe check station, where biolo-gists document the harvest andtake biological samples, it atfirst appeared that only oneovary was present. Hunters arerequired to bring out all ediblemeat, a sample of the liver andkidney for testing, the rack of males, and the reproductivetract of females, including bothovaries. Luckily, Polandsnephew had insisted that theygather and bring everything onthe list, and biologist KristineRines was soon able to locatethe other ovary. Otherwise Iwould have had to send them Story continues on page A-3

So, the elections are over for

another couple of years, and Idont think I have ever been soglad (except maybe the last timeand the time before that andthe...)! Every election cycle getsmore and more irritating (or maybe I understand the ridicu-lousness of the bigger picturemore and more)! Its likeCharlie Brown and the football. This year, I reached a point atwhich I started telling the waytoo-frequent evening callers thatI am surveyed out no more!An earlier seven-minute survey

ended up well over 15! I willsay, however, I was honest whenI answered Neither when itcame to whom I favored. Everycycle its getting worse, and Iam faced with the choice of whois the lesser of two evils (or theleast evil of two lessers). Arrrgh!

Whats in a name...? In a trip back to my younger years (andin a weak moment), I bought a

box of Kelloggs HoneySmacks. I guess they changedthe name from Sugar Smacksafter parents railed against it Imean all that sugar and all.Anyhow, while eating a bowl, Ilooked at the ingredients. Thefirst four: sugar, wheat, dex-trose, and honey (wait, howdthat wheat get in

there?). Consumer Reports found that both HoneySmacks and PostCereals Golden Crisp were thetwo brands with the highestsugar content, more than 50 per-cent (by weight), commentingThere is at least as much sugar in a serving of Kelloggs HoneySmacks [...] as there is ina glazed doughnut from DunkinDonuts.

My biggest issue with Facebook is that there are no filters.Anything goes. As an old-timer,there are some words and con-cepts that dont belong out therefor everyone. Actually, its real-ly not Facebook its the man-nerless, shameless people whothink anything is okay. Until Igrew up, I might have been oneof them. There are limits, folks.

When you read this, I willhave begun working on a novel. There is something called

National Novel Writing Month(Nanowrimo). The gist is towrite a 50,000 word novelthroughout the month of

November with writers workinguntil 11:59pm on the 30 th. As aresult, depending on how thingsunfold, my efforts here may be a

    bit hurried and possibly morespontaneous.

A quick thought: I know what Imean, but how do some peoplesleep at night? You know, theones who take such easy advan-tage of others. They smile their

benign smiles as they slip theknife in.

So, old news now, but I found

my reaction to last monthsshooting in Canada interesting. Iexpect such things in the US, butCanada? Whether its true or not, Canada seems so, so... vir-

ginal when it comes to violence.Speaking of which, the latestschool shooting (as of this writ-ing) was allegedly sparked

because the alleged shooter wasallegedly rejected by a girl.Instead of understanding some-one else will come along; one

just needs to be patient. One of

the things I learned alonway is that the authority fist stops just before the your nose. While there arethat may not be true, f

most part, it is a lesson people should learn and stand!

Alaska Story Has Local Ties__________________________________________________________We are running the following

story with permission from theChilkat Valley News out of

    Haines Alaska.

One of the boat captains in the story, Brad Badger, grew up inWarren, NH and his parents

Earl and Barbara still reside inWarren.

Two gillnet boat captains cred-ited with rescuing commercial

fisherman Woody Pahl saidluck including a piece of floating debris and the presenceof an extra crewman was crit-ical to Pahls survival, despitethe proximity of their boats toPahls as it sank in storm-tossedseas Sunday night.

I cant explain it. Im just gladeverything worked out, saidChris Olsen, skipper of the fish-ing boat Gabriella, whose deck-

hand Blake Ward helped fishPahl out of the water just after 9

p.m. about a mile west of William Henry Bay, 40 milessouth of Haines.

On a black night with swellsreaching six feet and higher,Olsen and Brad Badger, captainof the Osprey, followed thegreen, underwater glow fromthe still-operating deck lightson the sinking Kyra Dawn to

locate Pahl clinging to a sectionof plywood roofing nearby.

The rescue occurred as the threevessels were running for the

protection of William HenryBay in the face of a storm that

brought winds up to 71 knots, according to the NationalWeather Service.

Badger kept a hand-held spot-light on Pahl as Ward and Olsen

pulled him aboard after thond throw of a life ring.

When its rough, its hgrab your net in the midthe day, said Badger, a gcaptain here for 19 yeawas trying to steer and spo(Pahl) and it was reallycult.

Seas were so rough that Story continues on page

approaching Pahl risked run-ning him over, Badger said.Youd kill him with your boat. Yet a boat needed to pullclose enough to reach Pahl withthe toss of a life ring.

Even after locating Pahl in thewater, bringing him aboard inthe storm without the help of adeckhand would have been dif-ficult, at best, Olsen and Badger

said. Many gillnet boat captains like Badger on Sunday night operate their boats with nocrew.

Badger said he was relievedwhen Olsens boat arrived. Ithought, Oh God, thank God. Ihad (Pahl) spotlighted andChris got in a good spot. Asyoung as (Olsen and Ward) are, they really stepped up. Nobodycould have done that better thanthey did.

Olsen, 19, is only in his secondyear running a boat. Ward is 20.I was so lucky to have Blakewith me, he said. I wouldnthave been able to pull (Pahl)out of the water by myself. I

was able to operate the boatwhile Blake pulled him in.Pahl spent an estimated eightminutes in the water.

Pahl, fishing at Point SaintMary, had radioed Badger andOlsen that he was listing andtaking on water while runningfor the bay, about five milesaway. Badger closest to Pahlsvessel followed from behindwhile Olsen approached fromthe north. Each skipper saw theKyra Dawn go down.

It was pitch black, Olsen said. You couldnt see, but youcould see the deck lights still onunderwater. The water stayed litfor about two minutes. Whenwe got to him, the lights flick-ered and went out.

Badger, who at 100 yards awaywas closest to the sinking boat, said there was such a brief spanbetween Pahls 8:57 p.m. may-day and the vessels submersionhe assumed Pahl was trappednside. I heard him hollering

my name before I saw him,Badger said.

Pahl, a 25-year-old residentwho returned to town Mondaymorning, said he jumped off the40-foot Kyra Dawn at the lastminute, when water was nearlyto the top of its cabin door. Hehad just enough time to grab asurvival suit but not put it on and was swimming franticallyaway from the sinking vessel, afraid of being caught up in itsrigging, when he came acrossthe torn-off roof of the boatsbait shed. I found that and thatwas my savior.

Badger said besides keepingPahl out of the frigid water, thechunk of roof gave him a higher profile amid the swells.

When the Gabriella approachedwithin 30 feet, Pahl swam for it.He grabbed the life ring thrown

by Ward, which landed about15 feet away. Once (Pahl) leftthat roof top, he was moving

pretty fast. He had the urge tolive, Badger said.

Pahl said he was hauling about3,500 pounds of fish when hestarted toward St. James Bay.We knew the storm was com-ing in. It was on the radio; theywere calling for gale-forcewinds. We all made the samemove. Thats why boats were

    all around me, which waslucky.

Going across the canal, parallelto the chop, was doable butnasty, Badger said.

Pahl said the recessed deck of his vessel compared to flushdecks on the Osprey andGabriella that dont catch water

may explain the difficulty hewas having. By turning theKyra Dawn into the waves, hetried to drain water from the

    boat through its rear scuppers.

Once a wave filled the back deck, thats what did me in. Iwas able to clear the decksonce, but that was it. Trust me,

my next boat is going to have aflush deck, Pahl said.

Winds blew out of the northSunday, and fishermen weremaking good catches. A lullcame about 8 p.m. as windsshifted from the south.Fishermen were expecting thestorm, but its sudden arrivalwas surprising, Badger said.

Ive seen weather kick up realquick like that before, but you

could see it coming like a black curtain. You couldnt really seemuch of a front on this one,Badger said.

Pahl, who has skippered boatsfive years and worked aboardthem for 11, estimated he wasless than two miles from the

bay when the vessel sunk. Thedifference, he said, he may havemade up had he not taken timeto sear a roast during the lull. Itwas close. Thats why I told theCoast Guard I thought I wasgoing to make it.

The boat sank in about 900 feetof water. The Coast Guard willconduct an investigation. Pahl

said he was in the process of buying the vessel, which isinsured.

The ordeal has inspired Badger to buy LED floodlights for hisvessel, he said. Hed previouslyfound the ultra-bright lightsobnoxious, he said. If I hadthose Id have been able to get

so much closer to (Pahl). I believer in them now.

Rather than spend more than I earn telling me why I should not vote for someone, how about acandidate promising to end a

form of terrorism such as theserobotic telemarketers?

My sleep has been interrupted for at least two years and the

frequency of calls is increasing. Also, according to my caller I.D., I called myself from myown number both while I washome and while at work, inaddition to all the other times

Rachel called to tell me to con- sider this my final notice. Also, I was told by FairPoint Communications that the

Federal Do Not Call List doesnot apply to these automationsbecause of the geographic point of origin.

As I understand it, it is a Federal offense to tamper withthe mail. Why not label theseautomations as terrorist tools

(they disrupt my sleep and therefore my health), consider these false call I.D. tags tam-

    My Opinion-

Schools should have a class in stress management for students. Some students can not handle

stress and thats why so many students turn to drugs. Drugsare only temporary!

Later on in their lives, drug addicted students, will havemedical problems.

A stress management class should be taught by someone inthe medical field. We must saveour future generations!

The Haverhill Corner Librarywill hold a discussion of AFeathered River Across the Sky:The Passenger Pigeons Flight toExtinction by Joel Greenberg. The discussion will be held onMonday, November 10 and will

be second in a series of book dis-cussion on the themeExtinction! Thediscussion will

begin at 7:00 PM and will be freeand open to the public.

In the early nineteenth century 25to 40 percent of North Americas

birds were passenger pigeons, traveling in flocks so massive asto block out the sun for hours or even days. But as naturalist JoelGreenberg relates, the pigeons

propensity to nest, roost, and flytogether in vast numbers madethem vulnerable to unremittingmarket and recreational hunting.Although a billion pigeonscrossed the skies 80 miles fromToronto in May of 1860, littlemore than fifty years later pas-senger pigeons were extinct. Thelast of the species, Martha, diedin captivity at the Cincinnati Zooone hundred years ago, on

    September 1, 1914.

The passenger pigeons demise,as recounted by Greenberg, wasa story of unremitting, wanton,continental-scale destruction, says the New York Review of Books. The book is equal partsnatural history, elegy, and envi-ronmental outcry, says The NewYorker, which notes that, answering even basic questionsabout the passenger pigeonrequires a sort of forensicornithology, which gives [this

book] an unexpected poignancyat the very points where it is mostnature-nerdy. The ChicagoTribune hailed this account as a

brilliant, important, haunting and poignant book.

The Extinction! series willconclude with a discussion of

Neanderthal Man: In Search of Lost Genomes by Svante Pboon December 8.

    Healthy HappinessNeeds Your Vote

For several years now,Denmark has been at the top of the World Happiness Index.Since US rates number 12 onthe list, behind Scandinavia,Canada and Australia, I won-dered how much happinesseffects general health and foundan interesting study byR. Veenhoven of Erasmus Univ.Rotterdam., HealthyHappiness: effects of happinesson physical health and the con-sequences for preventive healthcare. Veenhoven analyzed 30follow-up studies on happiness

and longevity (including sever-al from US states).

Perhaps we can learn somethingfrom Denmark. Three rightsthat Danes choose to providefor all citizens are free educa-tion, childcare and healthcare.

Preschool education is providedin daycare facilities. Educationcontinues up through vocation-al education and college.

Higher education is seen as a basic right and funded with taxdollars. By comparison, collegegraduates in the US are oftensaddled with decades of collegetuition debt and have difficulty

finding employment in their field. Such milestones as mar-riage, home-ownership andchild-rearing are compromised.

Veenhoven notes that whilehappiness has not been found to

be a cure for illness, happinessappears to protect us againstfalling ill, in some way. Wehave a better immune response, lower blood pressure, make bet-ter choices in life, are motivatedto keep fit, more inclined towatch our weight, are more per-ceptive of symptoms of illness, cope better with threateninginformation, and facilitate cre-ation and maintenance of sup-

    portive social networks.

US Healthcare has become a political football, distorted bythe for-profit health care indus-try. Denmarks healthcare rep-resents 11 percent of its GDP.

US healthcare sucks up 18 per-cent.

Denmarks $21 an hour mini-mum wage also guarantees that

people can support their fami-lies. McDonalds gets awaywith paying employees $7.50an hour in the US, while paying$21 an hour in Denmark. When

parents have to work 2 or 3 low paying jobs to support their families, they are hardly in a

position to spend quality timeas a family. Many single peoplestruggle to survive here.

Carl Gibson, in How Voting inLarge Numbers DramaticallyImproves Society( Reader Supported News 10/21/14),noted that the last election inDenmark brought out 87 per-cent of the population, com-

pared to 57 percent registeredvoter turnout in the US.

Happiest countries valuerights for all ciPoliticians bent on crmore money for affluent ers do threaten Denmark

piness. But, thus far, Daniizens have gotten out toand maintained their righealth.

Its time to listen up to wh politicians plan to do avote for those who valuerights for all citizens. Whvalue basic rights for everwe all benefit. Our ghealth improves along wihappiness index.

Art with FlowersAcross the cabin from the door, towards the northwest is a sim-ple painting. In lines of blues, grays, and whites mountainridges are depicted, silhouetted

against the deep green tones of home-made paper. When thesun shines through the glasspanes of the door, rays catch themage, the light of a mountain

    sunrise on our wooden wall.

Just beneath this is a woodenbookcase, a childhood gifthand-crafted by my father. Itsoverflowing with trail and fieldguides, gardening books, con-struction & building instruc-tionals, etc etc. Its our refer-ence section, although a cou-ple of novels are tucked into thebottom shelf as the other casesare equally full.

Between these two - the art-work of mountains and thebooks of knowledge - sitspoised a flower arrangement.Often there, but not always;some days the space is waitingto be filled.

I dont just mean an old masonar stuffed with a fistful of

blooms from the front garden. No, a proper arrangement, ankebana arrangement - that is, in

the Japanese style of floral art.In this school of arrangement, there is a precise mathematicsto a pleasing visual. Flowersfill the spatial roles of heaven, man, and earth, a metaphysicalstatement as well as a geometric

guide to their angle and posi-tioning within the suibam, or

bowl. The flowers appear toreach out to you, even as theyspire toward the ceiling androot themselves in the water. The effect is intentional, andlovely. This really is Ryans skill, I am just the admirer and recipient. His intuition for comfortablespace, and guiding sense for atmosphere and effect lead himtime and again to an arrange-ment that fills me with breathand the room with beauty.

And not just in summer, butrather a touch of delight regard-less of the season. Pine boughs,

browned ferns, and winter witch hazel imbue the sublimewithin our little cabin just aswell as apple blossoms, daisies,

echinacea, or the myriad of other warm season plants withwhich he works.

So not only are these flowers agesture of beauty and a nod toseasonal choice, they are alsoRyans own expression of care.To look outside, for example onthese November days, and see

beyond the leafless trees to thecomponents of a design

bespeaks both a connection andan awareness with his surround-ings, and an appreciation for thesplendid details that compriseit. In one suibam he unites thelove and affection for our homescape with the comfortand belonging intrinsic to our

being in this place, together with each other.

Reaching out from the wall, between the mountains and the books, it a creative burst of beauty: temporary, fleeting, andexquisite.
