HAWK TO CHASE GULLS Following attacks by gulls and claims the town is being overrun, a falconer is being brought in to an Aberdeenshire coastal community to help deal with the problem. Locals in Peterhead say they can’t savour their sandwiches or feast on fast food in the street without hungry seabirds trying to nick their nibbles. Aberdeenshire Council has called on NBC Bird and Pest Solutions to help deter the birds fol-lowing claims the problem is worse this year than the town has ever seen. The birds are often seen to swoop down in surprise attacks to get their beaks on people’s snacks. Handler Ian Davidson and his trusty hawk Storm will begin a series of patrols in Peterhead returning throughout August. He will be flying Storm around Drummers’ Corner, Broad Street and Queen Street to de-flect the gulls’ attention from people in the street onto the predator in the sky. The hawk will not harm the gulls but its pres-ence will disturb them, a technique used in places such as the Wimbledon Championships, Aberdeen FC’s Pittodrie Stadium and local schools and council offices. This year has been a very successful breeding season for Herring and Lesser Black Backed Gulls, which are increasingly nesting around Peterhead. Recent public consultation on the regeneration of Peterhead town centre identi-fied the nuisance caused by gulls to be a key concern for residents. Aberdeenshire Council is now actively studying options to reduce bird numbers, including nest and egg removal and gull proofing methods for buildings. Peterhead Town Centre Project Officer, Heather Barclay, a former countryside ranger, said: “The nesting season typically begins in April, and the current issues in Peterhead are caused by young birds hatched this year competing for food with adult birds. “Gulls can be very aggressive at this time, not only with each other but also towards people. “In the next few weeks, the problem will reduce as the young birds naturally disperse out to sea and further along the coast. “In the meantime, it’s hoped the ‘fly and scare’ measures will reduce the risk of attacks on peo-ple. Anyone in the habit of feeding them inten-
tionally can also help by stopping, as it’s simply leading them into a life of crime, associating people with a source of food.” The visits by the Harris Hawk are being funded through the Peterhead Town Centre Action Plan. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) it is illegal to capture, injure or destroy any wild bird or interfere with its nest or eggs. However, to protect public health and safety, the Scottish Government can issues licences to control certain species. Aberdeenshire Council works with local communities, local businesses and building owners and occupiers offering advice and publicising the services of its preferred contractor for seagull control services – Pro-Check Environmental Services. If the services of Pro-Check are required, they can be contacted directly to arrange an appointment and discuss payment terms on 0844 800 6484. If areas are particularly affected by seagull droppings, steps can be taken to clean up public pavements. To notify Aberdeenshire Council of a specific area please contact Wasteline on 0845 600 3900 or email [email protected]

Police Officers in Aberdeenshire and Moray Division are reminding householders to be aware of 'cold callers' who may offer to do work at their premises. It follows a number of reports during the afternoon of Tuesday 29 July 2014, in the Sandend area, Aberdeenshire, of a man attending at the homes of elderly persons claiming to be from the Council. The man was then given access to the addresses and proceeded to enter the loft spaces under the pretence of being there to carry out work. Officers are keen to gain any information on any person or persons who may be responsible. PC Philip Duncan, based at Banff, said: "This individual is targeting vulnerable persons in the Sandend area and I would remind local residents that if approached by people claiming to be from the Council, or any other organisation, that they should ask for identification or business cards before allowing them into their property." Police Scotland urge householders to heed the following advice:
Don't agree to any work on the basis of a verbal quote. If you need work done, obtain written quotes from a number of reputable companies.
Whatever you do, don't agree to be taken down to the bank to withdraw money.
If you feel intimidated by a caller, close the door and call the Police.
Warn any elderly neighbours and relatives about the risks of these people, and if possible notify your local Neigh-bourhood Watch contacts if you suspect they are operating in your area.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you wish to remain anonymous.
After a day of waiting, patience paid off for kitesurfers as the wind kicked in and the first rounds of the Kiteboarder Cross Tour (KBC Tour) got under way at Fraserburgh Beach on Saturday 2nd August 2014. As kites filled the skies of Aberdeenshire, lo-cals and visitors to Fraserburgh were treated to an exciting and spectacular display as kitesurfers raced around a sea course whilst attempting to jump over floating inflatable obstacles. For those who didn’t want to brave the winds, the Esplanade proved a great vantage point; lining their cars to face the beach, spectators had a bird’s eye view of the action. The more adventurous ventured onto the beach or stood watching on the promenade, cameras at the ready to capture the comic antics. Think ‘It’s a Knockout’, ‘Total Wipeout’ or ‘Takeshi’s Castle’ with kites and surfboards and you’ll get the idea! Organised and hosted by local kite sports school, Synergy Kitesports, in association with Aberdeen-shire Council; the kite festival at Fraserburgh incor-porates Scottish Windfest on Tour and the 3rd round of the Kite Boarder Cross Tour 2014. The Kiteboarder Cross Tour originated in Saint
Pierre La Mer in the south east of France where it has been held for 4 years. The first round of the KBC Tour 2014 was held in Saint Pierre La Mer in April and the second round was held in Dublin, Ire-land at the end of May. The Scottish Windfest is a grass-roots event organised by local kitesurfers and windsurfers. Scottish Windfest on Tour aims to continue this ethos while travel-ling to some of Scotland’s best venues to offer wind sports enthusiasts of all ages and abilities the chance to take part on a more local level in fun competition, check out the latest gear, try other wind sports, meet up with friends, old and new and chill out or tear it up and party. Whilst kiteboarder cross is most definitely amusing to watch, it certainly tests the skills of the kitesurfers. Put your kite in the wrong position and even if you’ve al-ready cleared the obstacle, you can find yourself swinging like a pendulum right back into it, get the jump wrong, or clip the side of the obstacle and you can end up head first in the drink, and go off course and you’re faced with the task of
having to tack back if you don’t want to incur penalty points for missing any obstacles! At the end of the first day’s racing, Senior British Kitesurf Freestyle Champion for 2013, Peter Jones from Newcastle, sponsored by Airush and Shinn was in pole position. Second and third places went to Scottish kitesurfers, Jake Higgins and Daniel Carre from Aberdeen, respectively with JP Butterworth also from Aber-deen currently lying in 4th place. Mark Davis, owner of Synergy Kitesports and event organiser said "It’s only day one but already we’ve had kites in the air, action on the water and an enormous amount of fun. Kitesurfers who have never tried kiteboarder cross before put aside an apprehension they might have had and gave it a go which is exactly what we’d hoped for. The event forms part of the The Regeneration Action Plan for Fraserburgh with the main purpose being to promote the excellent facilities that Fraserburgh has for action sports, in particular kitesurfing. So to see so many kites in the sky and to watch people of all ages having a great time is just perfect.”

CELEBRITIES URGE PARENTS TO
TAKE SMOKING RIGHT OUTSIDE A host of well-known Scots have backed the drive to keep homes smoke-free by urging parents to take smoking right outside.
TV presenters Carol Smillie and Alan Hansen, chef Tom Kitchen and golfer Catriona Matthews have spoken out in support for the
national campaign to protect children from second-hand smoke.
Because 85 per cent of second-hand smoke is invisible and odourless, many are unaware that smoking indoors, even at an open
window or standing at the back door, isn’t enough, as the harmful chemicals linger and drift around the home.
With the Scottish Government setting a target to reduce the proportion of children in Scotland exposed to second-hand smoke in the
home from 12 per cent to six per cent by 2020, the Take it Right Outside campaign aims to give smokers the facts.
Television presenter Carol Smillie said: "Every parent wants the best for their kids. And I'm backing this campaign because it gives
people who smoke the simple facts to help protect their children.
“I was really surprised to learn that second-hand smoke from just one cigarette lingers for that long. I'm sure many people think
they're doing the right thing by smoking at an open door or window, but the fact that the nasty invisible chemicals still go back
inside and hang around long after the cigarette has been put out will hopefully make people think differently. All the evidence shows
that going right outside to smoke really can make all the difference and its important people are aware."
Alan Hansen, football pundit and former player, said: “Of course everyone knows that sitting kids in smoke filled rooms is bad for
them. But the fact that second-hand smoke is invisible means it creates a danger that many people don't even realise is there.
Scotland has come a long way since the introduction of the smoking ban, and as a dad, I think giving kids the chance to grow up in a
smoke-free home is a good next step. Yes it may mean changing habits, but a little effort goes a long way to helping protect a child's
health."
Chef Tom Kitchin said: “I’ve always known second hand smoke was a health risk, but I never realised just how long smoke from
one cigarette can linger. As a father of four myself, it’s important to me to spread the message – smoking beside a window or door
isn’t enough.”
Catriona Matthew, pro golfer, said: "As a mum of two, I believe that it is important to give all children the chance to grow up in a
smoke-free environment and ensure that their health is not affected by second-hand smoke.”

New home plea for dog abandoned
outside court The Scottish SPCA is
seeking a special owner for a dog
who was abandoned outside
Aberdeen Sheriff Court while
heavily pregnant.
Sophie, a three year old staffie, was
found in a distressed state outside the
court on 2 April. She was taken to a
local police station, where she gave
birth to 10 puppies, two of which
sadly passed away.
An investigation was launched but
unfortunately the person who aban-
doned Sophie could not be traced.
Staff at the Scottish SPCA's
Aberdeenshire Animal Rescue and
Rehoming Centre in Drumoak are
now appealing to find Sophie a loving
owner.
Centre assistant manager Debbie
Innes said, "Poor Sophie has had
quite a journey after being abandoned
when she was extremely vulnerable
and forced to give birth in very sad
and stressful circumstances.
"She proved to be a fantastic mother
to her eight pups and now she has
had that particular responsibility lift-
ed from her shoulders she is free
to enjoy life and all it has to offer.
"This amazing girl just loves to love
and is ready to live again but,
unfortunately, we've had no interest
in her. It's such a shame as she's had
such a sad time and truly deserves to
find happiness andenjoy undivided
attention without the distraction of
any other pets."
If you can offer Sophie a new home
please call the Scottish SPCA's
Aberdeenshire Centre 03000 999 999.
