Welcome to the lucky 13th edition of the North East Source Bull Sale. Rarely do breeders get the opportunity to fulfill their herd sire needs at one location, on one given day. Throughout the past thirteen years, I have been pleased to assist these leading breeders in the marketing of their high quality product. The “North East Source” is truly the source of value-added herd improvers, offering the best of high maternal strength, combined with the best of continental performance.

As we enjoy the rewards of the past year or so, we must look forward to the opportunities that lie before us...rebuilding our cow herds will require both time and

genetic management. High maternal values come to the forefront when we think of building more numbers...but we must always keep in mind, that a good calf is a live calf. No other breed fits this scenario better than the Angus breed...great mother cows...fertile, high milk with low maintenance and calving ease.

In this period of reward, nothing bodes better than performance...pound of calf at weaning. The reward gives established breeders an opportunity to rebuild and retain those daughters out of good cows; rather than worrying about your banker, who now thinks you are smarter than several years ago. In the next decade, the two watch phrases will be “pounds of beef produced and high maternal values.”

The sale founder, Alvin Ginter, has been supplying the industry with high quality, easy calving, maternal bulls for over three decades...his success is based on a powerful cow herd and a repeat customer base. Barry Hall and his family have produced Continental and Angus cattle that have been used and accepted throughout North America. Brian Temple has built one of the best Charolais breeding herds in Northeast Saskatchewan. It is this combination of dedicated breeders that establish the quality of the North East Source.

20B is a son of Pleasant Dawn Razor 14W. A herd sire from Hatch’s that they had used for three years. He had a different pedigree than what we have been using on the farm and also being able to see his proven offspring, we purchased 14W and are walking him in our herd. Razor sons have what we are looking for in a bull. Hair, temperament, calving ease, muscle and polled. This guy is following in his father’s footsteps take a look at his EPDs.

Bootlegger is so good he should be illegal. One of the reasons for buying Razor was to cross with our Rio Blanco genetics. 28B is moderate but thick. He is polled and when he walks in the pen strides out nice. This bull has built in calving ease and great maternal strength. He is our pen greeter because when you walk in the pen he is always there trying to lick you or look for some attention.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs)

1.EPDs are very simple to understand and an easy to use selection tool for the purebred and commercial cattlemen.

2.EPDs are the most accurate means to date for estimating the true breeding value of an animal in regard to certain economically important traits.

3.EPDs provide a genetic description for the traits included in the summary i.e. birth weight, weaning weight, milk, total maternal, yearling weights, as well as carcass traits (carcass weight, rib eye area and marbling score) for the tested sires.

4.EPDs are expressed in the actual unit of measure for a given trait. As an example, EPDs for traits such as birth weight, weaning weight and yearling weight are expressed in pounds. The table below shows how the EPDs of two bulls within the North American Cattle Evaluation may be compared to estimate the difference that can be expected in progeny performance.

Based on the values given, you would expect the average weights of progeny by Sire A to exceed the average weights of progeny by Sire B by 4.5 pounds at birth, 15.0 pounds at 204 days and 20.5 pounds at 365 days. Milk EPDs are generated information gathered once the daughters of Bull A and Bull B are in production. Thus, we could expect that if large numbers of daughters resulting females from the above mating were put into production, the progeny of Sire A’s daughters would average 12.5 pounds more than the progeny of B sired daughters at weaning. Milk supplied by the daughters of Sire A would account for 12.5 pounds of this weight advantage. Another 7.5 pounds could be attributed to growth genetics from the daughters of Sire A resulting in a 20 pound overall advantage for Sire A for Total Maternal.
