The well known local representa- tive, who currently serves the Malahide/Howth Ward says that there was no particular reason that he is choosing to retire from his council duties other than his feeling that it was simply time to move on and “let others have a go.” He said: “There’s always a time to move on and I just felt that now was right. I don’t have any health issues or anything like that, I just thought that after 19 years, it was best to let someone else have a go.” Cllr Coyle, who was co-opted to the County Council in 1994, has a vast and extremely varied political career: in 1999, he was elected as a member of the Council after topping the poll in the Malahide Ward, from 2002 to 2003 he was Chairperson for the Malahide/Howth Area Committee, then in June 2004 to June 2005 he was Cathaoirleach of the Council (something he describes as a career highlight), and in June 2010 he was elected Leas Cathaoirleach. Coyle is keen to emphasise that he will still be available to the public with any queries they may have, once his current term in office is finished. “There’s been a lot of many great moments through the years and one thing that still stands is that I’ve always loved helping people, so I’ll still be there after my term if anyone has any personal queries.” “I’ve never thought it wise to linger too long in politics,” he continued. “I’ll be kept going as I’ve three grandchildren to keep me busy and I’ll still be purusing many other activities.” After 19 years serving the local community, Cllr Coyle will no doubt be missed, but it will comfort local residents to know that he is still as active as ever and will continue to serve his area until May 2014, at the very least. Coyle To Retire After 19 Years Serving Community By Jennifer McShane Cllr. Peter Coyle The decision by the Health Service Executive (HSE) to move Curam Adult Mental Health Clinic from it’s base at Town Mall in Swords to the nearby Health Centre on Bridge Street in the town, has mystified and angered staff. Curam, which catered for the adult mental health requirements for Swords, has now been relocated to what has been descibed as “a vastly inferior facility in Swords Health Centre.” The reason given by the HSE for the closure was that the Town Mall premises consti- tuted a fire hazard. However, when the landlord offered to fix the problem free of charge, the HSE would have nothing to do with it. Speaking exclusively to the County Leader, Curam’s consultant psychiatrist, Dr. Declan Murray, was outraged at the decision, which he claims has seriously impacted on him and his team being able to provide a proper service for people with mental health issues. “There is no way we can provide for the needs of our clients in the same way as before. We cater for a catchment area of 78,000 people, the largest in the country, by far.” “At Curam clinic, we had regular out-patients and a home care team who would go and visit people in their homes and in Swords Health Centre, we had a day hospital where patients could go in the daytime. They are part of the same team, but are two separate elements to the service. This arrangement worked very well. Now everyone is shoe horned into one smaller location. I just can’t make any sense of it,” he said. Worst of all, the HSE did not have the decency to inform patients of the closure of Curam. “Many of them found out from a shopkeeper in the area, who was able to tell them of the closure. This is no way to treat the most vulnerable people in our society.” A spokesperson for the HSE told the County Leader, “Patients were not notified in advance because this was an unplanned closure.” Dr. Murray thought he had found a solution to the problem. “While I was on my way to a meeting in St Ita’s, I got a call from the landlord to say that he would pay for the fire upgrade. To me, that would have solved the problem once and for all. The HSE manager washed his hands of the problem and said it was a matter for HSE Estates, who manage the buildings.” Dr. Murray confirmed that the HSE asked the landlord why he was willing to waste his money on such a project. “It appears they were willing to let the lease run it’s course until 2015, while paying for a vacant building. “Why could they not have left us there until then, at least,” pleaded a bemused Dr Murray. He continued, “We have nurses treating patients here in Swords, who worked in Curam and are now based in Balbriggan, so a nurse who is doing a home visit in Swords now has to drive from Balbriggan. The staff no longer have offices where they can see a patient for counselling or therapy. Now they have to look for rooms and there simply isn’t enough space to complete our work as before.” Local senator Darragh O’Brien (FF) was horrified at the way the HSE is treating it’s patients. He told the County Leader, that he has demanded a special debate in the Seanad on a developing crisis in adult mental health services across north Dublin. “The situa- tion in north Dublin is at crisis point. I have met Dr. Declan Murray and his team at Curam twice. They are providing essential services to more than 500 patients in the north Dublin area, but they are not being given the tools to do their job.” He continued, “There is insufficient space to hold a day-care centre. I raised this directly with the Health Minister in the Seanad as an example of what is happening to our adult mental health services under his leadership,” he said. “If this Government is serious about tackling mental health, we should not only fund our adult mental health services appropriately, but ensure that our patients, such as those served by Curam, have the proper facilities to be treated with dignity and respect. These are specific examples which, five months ago, Minister Reilly stated he would look into, but there has been no response from him. His silence on this is not acceptable,” he concluded. Things Are Looking UpFor Swords Group A group of determined mothers in the Swords Manorand Applewood areas of Swords who are lobbying toget two funds together for two playgrounds in the area, are having great success with their fundraisingcampaign. Spokesperson for the Swords Needs Playgroundsgroup, Marica Killi, who lives in Lioscian got back intouch with the County Leader to give us an update ontheir progress: “We need two playgrounds, one atBroadmeadow Linear Park in Thornleigh and the otheron waste ground, opposite Swords Manor ShoppingCentre. The local authority initially said they had nofunds available for such projects, but we were givengreat news recently when they came back to us and saidthat they could commit to paying 25 per cent of thefunding, so we’re starting a big push to get the other 75per cent.” The total amount needed is €300,000 forboth playgrounds and the all weather pitch, but thecommittee, who have raised over €1,000 in the lastmonth alone, are already planning more and looking atdifferent fundraising options too (they hope to get helpfrom the National Lottery among others).“We’ve made great progress so far,” she continued.“Next up we’re looking for all the community supportwe can as we hold a ‘clean out’ event. If you can fill alarge refuse sack with old clothes, shoes or bags, pleasebring them along to Swords Manor Car Park, next to thepub on Friday 3rd May between 2.30pm – 3pm. Wehave a clothing company coming to collect each bagand all money made is going towards our playgroundcampaign.”The group have many other activities planned over thecoming months and are thoroughly grateful for all thecommunity support they have received so far. “We’regetting there bit by bit. It will be a happy day when wecan sit on the swings in the new playgrounds,” Marciaconcluded.

Doing It For The Kids

Fiona Broderick has wanted to teach and helpchildren since she was four years old. The 23year old who currently teaches at BalbrigganCommunity College, says that this is no joke:“My most vivid memory of first wanting toteach is when I was around four and I wouldplay make believe with my brother. I wouldalways be the teacher, and a very strict one atthat!” she says, laughing. Fiona, who is originally from Galway, movedto Skerries in 2011 and got her post as aHome Economics teacher in BalbrigganCommunity College soon after. Fionaembodies all of the ideal characteristics of ateacher: she is bright, bubbly and lovesmeeting and interacting with people. “I justthink my job is fantastic. I know I’m so luckyto have a job doing what I love the most.” Shetrained in Home Economics and Religion (shesays she would have always had a very strongfaith, which grew stronger after her granny’sdeath), but currently just teaches HomeEconomics.“I had a brilliant Home Economics teacherwhen I was in school, who inspired me towant to teach that subject.”She says it's the little thingsthat she finds mostrewarding every day, andloves to see her studentsembrace their creative side.“It can be the smallestthings such as one of thestudents saying ‘thank you’to watching them prepare athree course meal by them-selves - it’s very rewarding.Students would even comeup to me from time to timeand tell me that I inspirethem in some way, which asa teacher is exactly what youlove to here.”As we’re speaking about her job (which sheclearly adores), it’s then that she brings upher recent life changing trip volunteering inUganda. “It was something that I knew Ialways wanted to do. I went for 10 days andassisted in the building of a new healthcarecentre as well as teaching the local childrenEnglish and practical things like how to givefirst aid. It was really incredible, most of thechildren had never seen any practical aspectsof a subject, (they were unable to make theconnection between theory and practical) soto see them become so fascinated by some-thing as small as a first aid kit for example, and know you were teaching something newwas just brilliant.”She says she knew straight off the mark that

things were going to be tough, but she says, despite her positive mentality she had noidea how difficult it would be when her groupvisited the local orphanage. “I’m luckyenough to have quite a strong and positivementality, but very little prepared me for howtough I was going to find it. It was bothwonderful and heartbreaking at the sametime to play with the babies - they were fasci-nated by everything, even my shoelaces! - butthen at the end of it you knew you were goingto have to leave them behind. It was difficultfor everyone, no one said a word on the busjourney home.”She says a particular highlight (asides fromworking with the children), was having thelocal workmen compliment her on herbuilding skills. "My dad works on the farm athome and taught me a thing or two, so I knewI'd be well able for the building side of things, but the workmen were really surprised andsaid I was really strong, which was a greatcompliment to receive!"Fiona returned home with a fresh perspectiveon her life and was thrilled with what she had

achieved on her trip. She iseager to thank and praise theschool and the local commu-nity for their support as sheworked to get the €1,500raised before she left forUganda. "It would not havebeen possible for me to go inthe first place without theamazing support of the staff, students, my family and thelocal community; everyonewas just fantastic and I got atrue sense of what it was liketo see the community grouptogether for a good cause.Everyone's enthusiasm and

support really inspired me to go over and giveit 100 per cent."Fiona describes herself as a social butterflyand enthusiastically chats to me about howmuch she loves Dublin and all aspects of thecity, and indeed community life. "I definitelylove to go out and be sociable." She is veryclose to her family; her mam, dad and twobrothers and is a keen jet setter. "I've alwaysloved travelling (she has recently returnedfrom Asia) and I love to meet new people fromdifferent cultures and cities." In terms of herfuture plans she is about to start preparationfor a Masters degree and is eyeing moretravel on the horizon. "I really love my life atthe moment, and as long as I get to teach andsee more of the world, I'll be very happy,"she concluded.

Daly Plans Gathering At Rush Library Following a lively and determined meeting of Rush resi-dents on Thursday, April 25th last convened by local TDClare Daly, residents have resolved to campaign to savetheir library hours from being cut. Residents and otherlocal councillors alike have spoken to the County Leaderover the past few weeks, protesting the cuts to thisvaluable community amenity. Daly told the CountyLeader: “the range of groups and individuals whoattended the meeting and explained what the librarymeans to them was truly striking. We had schoolstudents, members of chess clubs, art clubs, Irishclasses and many others outlining the range of activi-ties that are now under threat as a result of CountyCouncil’s decision to slash library hours.” “Residents inRush fought so hard for this facility and it was of suchuse in the area that there was no way they were goingto sit back and allow this to happen.” A committee wasset up and residents have decided to organise a NovelGathering at Rush Library for Saturday, May 11th at2pm. “We are calling on all clubs, societies, commu-nity groups, school students and others to come alongwith an outline of what the library means to them,” shecontinued. We will also be protesting outside the nextcouncil meeting and intend to link up with the othercommunities affected in order to have this cut reversed.I would ask all local residents to come out and ensurethat this cutback is stopped.”

Marie Cummins -RolestownMarie Cummins from Rolestown is next up as aDublin Rose of Tralee candidate. The 26 year old hasovercome huge hurdles in her life to get to where sheis today. Marie discovered she had a very serioustumour in her ear and after battling for two years withthe illness, she was finally given the all clear just overa year ago. Marie says despite the struggles shewent through, she came out the other side with a

renewed optimism and apprecia-tion for life which not only influ-

enced her career, but restoredher religious faith as well. “It

was a scary time,” she toldthe County Leader. “Therewas a 50/50 chance that Iwould live or die, so when Irecovered, I made aconscious decision tonever take things forgranted again and made a‘bucket list’ of everything

I wanted to achieve.Participating in the

Rose of Traleewas one ofthose goals.I’ve tickedabout five orsix boxes offthe list so far, which isn’tbad.”Marie is asecondarys c h o o lteacher inDroghedaa n dteaches a

variety of different subjects including: English, FilmStudies and History. “I absolutely love teaching andthe school has a very holistic approach to educationwith a terrific atmosphere, so I’m lucky to be there.”Before her teaching started Marie was involved withvarious charities which centred bringing a religiousmessage to the youth in our communities, one ofwhich was Pure In Heart. “I worked with Pure InHeart for quite a few months. It’s a Catholic charity,so we would go around various schools and teach them about things like relationships, selfimage and modesty.”Marie says her faith is very important to her, and itplays a huge part in her life. I’m very passionateabout my faith and teachings. I come from a veryCatholic family (my brother is studying to become aseminarian). I had turned away from my faith butcame back to it after my illness as I’m certain thatGod was the reason I recovered.” Marie is spon-soring herself, but will be raising awareness forTrocaire through the Rose festivities. “I just thinkthey’re an incredible charity and I’m happy to offerthem my support.”She says that having recovered from her illnessgave her a more positive mentality and taught herto take every day as a gift. “It was a very personaljourney for me and I’m so glad I’m over the otherside.” She is extremely close to her family and inher spare time she loves to keep fit and stay active. She is about to take part in the Samsung Night Run,which she has been busy training for. “I was alwaysvery into sport and fitness and would play a lot ofhockey and other sports in school.” Marie is alsointo some calmer activities such as knitting. She finishes off by saying it would be incrediblyspecial to be crowned the Dublin Rose and if shewere crowned she would hope to inspire others tobe the best they can be, simply by being them-selves. “I really believe that every person is uniqueand special in their own way and through the Rose Iwant to convey that message to all the girls that aretaking part or thinking of taking part in the future,”she concluded.
